Lockn 2016 was the only time i’ve seen JRAD. Big WOWO and huge energy. I’d been a marco fan and ween guy forever. Late night set. Ween, phish and my morning jacket the same weekend. Young khrungbin too. Hot as hell. Circles around the sun debut late night in the forest. Ween had a sign language interpreter who *crushed* Piss Up A Rope. Gene ween sang billy joel songs with umphreys mcgee dj logic was the shit. Hot as hell
JRAD. Hands down. No question. Khraungbin is a fun time but JRAD will leave you in a puddle of goo. Very few groups have they chemistry that JRAD does and are willing to go as deep or as hard as they do.
I would choose JRAD, but hey, different strokes. I accidentally bought tix for 2 shows on the same night later this summer - Sierra Ferrell vs. Leftover Salmon. I'm going with Sierra Ferrell.
Going to see goose in Montana after and then Sturgill is on Sunday. I really wanna stay another day to see him but then got more goose planed the next week lol
I skipped khruangbin for jrad a few years ago cause jrad one of my favs. Just caught Khruangbin on Wednesday and wish I hadn't missed their first show.
Khruangbin, if you haven’t seen them. They sound so fuckin good right now. They aren’t a jam band, but have been jamming more lately than on any previous tour. JRAD is AWESOME but at the end of the day it’s still just more re-tread dead tunes.
Never thought much of Kruaghbin from listening to their albums but was very impressed by the show I caught last week.
I probably wouldn’t need to see them again so soon but if the choice was seeing them for the first time or another Dead cover band I’d choose Kruaghbin.
Now one of Russos “This is going to be a blast” lineups I’d be all over that as the choice
I don't think of JRAD as a GD cover band. The music is Grateful Dead, but the execution is nothing like them at all. They take you on wild rides and crazy jazz-like jams within jams. DSO is a cover band, IMO.... but a great one, no doubt. Hey, we all like what we like.
JRAD and it's not even close. They're one of the best touring jam bands atm imo. So if you want deep, heady jams that really explore the space, go with JRAD. If you want more concise songs and way less jamming, go with khurangbin. They're still a good time, but not a jam band, and nowhere near as dynamic as JRAD.
JRAD isn't at all a "cover band". The music is GD, but the execution is a wild and crazy roller coaster of a ride that doesn't at all resemble the Grateful Dead. It's more jazz, IMO.
I understand the sentiment lol. I do have bias though. I’ve seen khruangbin 5 times and jrad 0. Was supposed to jrad at sacred rose in 22 but the whole damn Sunday got canceled
You can probably find an equivalently good Dead Tribute band to JRAD in your city (depending where you live), but it is unlikely that there are a lot of local bands which will capture the sound and vibe of Khruangbin, so id say see them.
I just saw both of them within the same month, JRAD at red rocks notably which was a phenomenal show. It was my first time seeing both, so I’d say go Khruangbin. It’s on the more chill side, has a slow build. But they played really well and I think it’s a unique tour and general show experience. But depends on what you’re looking for at the end of the day. I sat down for the first half of khruangbin, sat for maybe 10 min of JRAD
I love both bands but I'd choose JRAD without hesitating. And I like Khru live but it's way more of a chill vibefest and won't be as musically ambitious or melt any part of your face.
Like for me, Khruangbin is the band I wanna see on a beach near the ocean in a tropical resort with a cocktail in hand while bobbing in the waves. It's fun but relaxed. JRAD is the band I want to see if I've got a pocket full of mushrooms, and I want to dance across the cosmos instead of sleeping that night.
~~I thought Khraungbin stopped touring last year? Or am I thinking of someone else? Definitely wrong; [they've got a huge tour going on](https://www.khruangbin.com/tour).~~
So I'm completely wrong about them. They're not even Japanese. Any chance someone knows who I'm thinking of? Japanese jam/jam-adjacent band that had lots of mellow stuff that evolved into amazing creations? I think there was a sitar player among them.
[Kikagaku Moyo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8y3nM6tEqw)!
Should think before I post. Two seconds of Googling "Japanese Jam Band" brought up a lot of great stuff.
Back to your regularly scheduled OP. Sorry for the interruption.
I'm just so delighted over so many folk fretting over such a quagmire. In fairness, no one's helping at all, but hey we're coming together. Great discussion, though.
I'm thinking if Khruangbin embraced a little more weirdness, they'd have an edge over JRAD.
JRAD for sure. Their red rocks show absolutely melted my face. Seen Khruangbin a few times and their shows have been more or less the same setlist-wise. If you haven't seen them though that could be a factor.
I too am at Bonnaroo and had to make this choice. I’m going Khruangbin because I’ve seen JRAD once and I didn’t love it. Apparently in the minority but whatever. Anyway, happy roo! You’ll have a great time at either
Khraungbin is the elevator music of the jam-adjacent world. I’d pick JRAD everyday.
I went to a khruangbin show and they talked for literally 90 minutes in between sets while my friends and I were flying in acid. Never liked them after that.
Krhruangbin brings the chill vibes. JRAD just shreds. Choose accordingly. I’ll be at JRAD in a Lockn shirt. Come say hey
Khruangbin is not so chill live, especially not this tour. It’s 🔥
It’s still chill, half the show is just the new album lol
2nd set isn’t chill. And the second set is way longer than the first. Anyway, Jrad is great. Khruangbin is great. Agree to disagree on the rest
Lockn 2016 was the only time i’ve seen JRAD. Big WOWO and huge energy. I’d been a marco fan and ween guy forever. Late night set. Ween, phish and my morning jacket the same weekend. You can see 30 min of Kraungbin then go to JRAD
Somebody here festivals
Just have to focus between stages and avoid all side quest opportunities
JRAD. Hands down. No question. Khraungbin is a fun time but JRAD will leave you in a puddle of goo. Very few groups have they chemistry that JRAD does and are willing to go as deep or as hard as they do.
Jrad all day!!!!!
JRAD is an absolute juggernaut. No comparison.
Well said
I would choose JRAD, but hey, different strokes. I accidentally bought tix for 2 shows on the same night later this summer - Sierra Ferrell vs. Leftover Salmon. I'm going with Sierra Ferrell.
Damn both of them same night ? Where do you live ?
Salt Lake City. Goose is playing the same night as Sturgill in September. That's a tough one, but already had the Goose tix.
Not a tough one… put goose tickets on cot .
I’m torn on this as well Why’d you gotta do this to us sturg ??? Gotta go with goose though because of all my friends that’ll be there
Same here. If I were solo I'd choose Sturgill because he tours so infrequently. But whatever, Goose will be rad!
Going to see goose in Montana after and then Sturgill is on Sunday. I really wanna stay another day to see him but then got more goose planed the next week lol
This is the worst conflict of the weekend. Not sure what I’d choose if I were there having seen them both. Whatever you pick you win.
Saw Khruangbin in San Luis Obispo and they were mesmerizing. Seeing them in August as a weekend double header with Billy Strings. Can’t fucking wait!!
No way! What city?
Greek Theatre in Berkeley
Khruanghbin show starts slow. They play the entire new album for about an hour. Don’t get me wrong it was great, but the last hour was fire.
Do you want to dance or just bob your head?
If it was me, I would see Khruangbin just because of their unique sound.
It’s funny because they do have such a unique and distinct sound but all of their stuff kinda sounds the same.
100%
K is cool for some sexy mood music. It has its place… but, at a festival, I’d hit up JRAD! -JRAD
Jrad 100%
JRAD is, in my opinion, the best currently active dead band. Take them over Dead and Company.
I don't consider JRAD a GD cover band at all! But, hey, I'd also take them over D&C.
Agree, they reimagine and expand their music
i’ve seen both bands and i’d say go for khruangbin jrad is always touring and tickets are usually cheap if you’re patient no wrong answer though
JRAD is not always touring, they have increased their touring lately though.
If you've never seen khruangbin, go see khruangbin. Honestly I'd see them over jrad anyway. Plenty of chances to see jrad in the future
Go to khuragbin, you can always leave after 30 min and catch all or most of jrad
Khruangbin easy
Never thought much of Kruaghbin from listening to their albums but was very impressed by the show I caught last week. I probably wouldn’t need to see them again so soon but if the choice was seeing them for the first time or another Dead cover band I’d choose Kruaghbin. If it's a festival...khruangbin
JRAD. Assuming we’re talking about jam bands, and by extension, bands that actually jam in the sense of musical improvisation.
JRAD all day long they kill
Personally I would go with Khruangbin. I have never had the chance to see them live, been to many JRAD shows though and it’s always a great time.
Khruangbin
JRAD and it's not even close. They're one of the best touring jam bands atm imo. So if you want deep, heady jams that really explore the space, go with JRAD. Khraungbin! You can see a dead cover band every weekend
Not like them though.
True true
JRAD isn't at all a "cover band". The music is GD, but the execution is a wild and crazy roller coaster of a ride that doesn't at all resemble the Grateful Dead. It's more jazz, IMO.
>You can see a dead cover band every weekend This is embarrassing, you should delete it
I mean you can lol.
Acting like jrad is just a cover band... ![gif](giphy|OYirsehvkD91S)
I understand the sentiment lol. I do have bias though. I’ve seen khruangbin 5 times and jrad 0. Was supposed to jrad at sacred rose in 22 but the whole damn Sunday got canceled

JRAD all the way.
Start at jrad and end at khraungbin if you can
JRAD w/ Khruangbin wigs. Final answer.
JRAD!
JRAD no question
Both are great in different ways.
JRAD is the truth
Saw both at Lockn 2019. Never listened to either. K nailed it and left me going “wow”. JRAD was good but not my jam. They do send it.
I love both bands but I'd choose JRAD without hesitating. And I like Khru live but it's way more of a chill vibefest and won't be as musically ambitious or melt any part of your face. That’s an egregious schedule conflict
Yeah it’s horrible we went with JRAD though
Saw khruangbin at Jacob’s pavilion. Hands down best show I’ve ever been to. Straight heat.
Both
JRAD is hitting the spot
Apples. Oranges.
JRAD by a MILE.
Yes please.
JRAd duh
Isn’t jrad just really good dead covers ?
JRAD just fumbled red rocks. Bad. They don’t got it right now.
Khruangbin Original music is better than a cover band.
Hope you didn’t miss khruangbin
Khruangbin
~~I thought Khraungbin stopped touring last year? Or am I thinking of someone else? JRAD hands down
Is this a real question?
I'm just so delighted over so many folk fretting over such a quagmire. In fairness, no one's helping at all, but hey we're coming together. Great discussion, though. I'm thinking if Khruangbin embraced a little more weirdness, they'd have an edge over JRAD.
It depends personally that's a no brainer for me with Jrad but if you've never seen krung before
JRAD for sure. Their red rocks show absolutely melted my face. Seen Khruangbin a few times and their shows have been more or less the same setlist-wise. If you haven't seen them though that could be a factor.
Khruangbin for sure.
jRAD is amazing, but still a cover band. I’ve seen them a bunch and am a huge fan, but I’d still go see Khruangbin
Currently Khurangbin, they are crushing this tour
Dude, Khruangbin. They are one of the most influential bands right now! Go see them
They are both awesome but tough choice. But outdoors you have to go with JRAD.
I too am at Bonnaroo and had to make this choice. I’m going Khruangbin because I’ve seen JRAD once and I didn’t love it. Apparently in the minority but whatever. Anyway, happy roo! You’ll have a great time at either
Jrad
Jrad
JRAD all day(night)
Khurangbin is just Billie Eilish on coke
[удалено]
I've listened to a ton of khurangbin. I even have some of their vinyl. I've listened to enough Billie Eilish.
Ok
This makes no sense
Not really comparable imo. Love the Bin but they’re not a jam band, and JRAD is a cover band so idk
JRAD
Khruangbin, amazing show
Khraungbin is the elevator music of the jam-adjacent world. I’d pick JRAD everyday. I went to a khruangbin show and they talked for literally 90 minutes in between sets while my friends and I were flying in acid. Never liked them after that.
Not even close JRAD
