Agreed. If I was to move back, I think Craighall Park/Parktown North or River Club/Morningside would be my ideal spots. But OP, these are all nicer areas, so expect rentals/property prices to reflect that
Anywhere in "The Parks" is great - search for the previous posts about The Parks and you'll find all the discussions and info about those suburbs. Great place
I generally work from home for my 2 companies.
Might consider a nearby co-working office space. Being close to Sandton for business meetings will be a plus.
However, my partner got a new position near the roodepoort /Florida area , so ideally, something within a 20 min drive is preferred
You're going to need to choose between lifestyle and commute here. There are no areas 20 mins from Roodepoort that is like that. As others have said, Parkhurst and Craighall Park are your best options for being around greenery, followed closely by Linden and Victory Park.
We've found a spot in craighall that's only 15kms away from her work - around 20 min drive - which is the quickets commute time she's ever had, even compared to durban lol!
Craighall seems to be the most likely place we're going to rent in. Offers great conveince & lifestyle, within a good commute time.
We're currently staying in Edenglen with a family friend as a temporary stay. And the commute is 50+ minutes, not even including traffic, which is insane!
Not to sure any one of those will meet all your criteria .
And know few people who would have lived in all.
I will give feedback where can
Northriding
This would be most affordable of the list you given
But
The park close by (golden harvest) has lots of security issues and
They have gone many days with out power and water weather is maintanange , watershedding, or electrical infrastructure giving out for days at time
Are some office close by
Is the longest of list to get into circle/Sandton
3 virgins arround
Northcliff (Linden)
I would add Linden to list if looking northcliff
There is park emmerentia that go to on weekends is pet friendly.
Linden has ton of eateries and has running groups on weekends
Gyms are a distance but if Linden can go victory park
Depending on side of Northcliff could go Cresta / 14th avenues
The others will be bit pricier but nice places if work close to there .
Hiking/mountain biking
This you would generally travel a bit for so 30-40 Min drive to cradle or hennops or Muldersdrift for hiking and mountain biking places .
Sadly none of the places on your list will be close to Umhlanga lifestyle or feel . Is JHB and is very different from people to activities to feel of city
Linden was also the first neighbourhood to get street CCTV and used to have well managed crime. But better to check neighbourhood groups to see if that’s still true.
Thank you for your insightful comment of your experiences, I definitely have a better idea of the areas from all the feedback
Leaning towards Parkhurst and Northcliff
Northcliff views are amazing. I'm on the lower end of the hill and have not had a single water issue in years. Linden is 2 mins away and such a vibe. Northcliff will be a shorter commute for your partner.
I didn't even know Jhb had views like Northcliff has haha! We have been looking around there too! But have since been leaning towards Craighall, since she's okay with a little extra commute
I went to Saxonwold Primary School and lived in Aldswold rd in a nice little bungalow, but this was in 1952 when I was 1 yr old!
We moved to Sixth St when I was five hrs old
Any of the Parks are great. When I lived in Joburg we stayed in Greenside which I would also highly recommend. Was walking distance to lots of parks/cafes and I worked out at Pirates club (also had lots of beers there…). This was 2019 so not sure if it’s changed but seemed pretty safe and there were co-working locations close by in Parkhurst.
Northriding really depends which side you are. Haven't been many issues this year in general, my side has had less than the other but last year the WhatsApp group was full of complaining.
It's nice though, I grew up closer to town so the suburban life appeals to me. Complexes are pretty affordable relatively and as long as you don't have douchebags on your body corporate are pretty chill.
Rosebank is a nightmare for traffic, I work in Randburg and have to respond into that area quite often. Can take you 20 minutes to go 7km in rush hour traffic with sirens.
That was for them the deciding factor. I think that it was also an opportunity and simply that they could. They didn't want to move suburbs because of the school the kids were in or something. Who knows why people ultimately decide things. But that's what she said.
Same for Parkown North but haven't had any issues in Craighall Park. Great area especially if you like mountain biking. Tons of riders start from Vice.
Craighall Park. Great vibe, very close to Delta Park

Agree with this. Very walkable. Tons of coffee shops and quite a few cycling and running groups that start from Vice or Motherland.
Will consider, thanks!
Definitely Parkhurst from your list, but as someone else said, anywhere in the Parks. We’ve lived in the area for almost 10 years and it’s been great.
Thanks! It's definitely my number 1 choice so far!
We’ve been in Parkhurst two years without a single water issue. It’s a great neighborhood!
That's great news!

Will do, thanks!
Where will you be working OP. That needs to impact you're choices if you're traveling in.

The commute from the areas on your shortlist out to roodeport is not great.
Even the South would be good for you- Mulbarton, Glen Vista.

Craighall is a lovely area. Glad to hear you found a place.

I've seen the pirates sports club, quite walkable from the place we are looking to rent - quite excited!

Thanks for your comment! Northriding has fallen off the shortlist for me, it's between Parkhurst, Craighall and Parktown or Emmarentia
Parkview, Parkhurst, Melrose Estate, Greenside, Emmarentia, Dunkeld West, Hyde Park, Parktown North.
I'm really liking Parkhurst, just visited 4th Ave the other day, such a vibe!
If it has Parks in the name, you are good. Personally live in Parkview and love this neighbourhood.
Shot!
Are you buying or renting?
Looking to rent in Craighall for now, and hopefully buy in Parkhurst in the future
Northriding is the cheapest, but a friend just moved from there because of electricity issues. Parkhurst often has water problems, I believe.
Parkhurst and surrounds had water problems for a few weeks all related to the same issue. There is not a regular problem
I read an update from johnnesburg water that the water issues were due to pipe maintenance/upgrade and will be resolved by the end of the month?
A friend moved out of the country because of those issues. If you live there and say it's sorted, yay!
People don't typically immigrate out of SA for one reason. If one reason is water supply in a suburb one typically moves suburbs.

Visited Vice the other morning, plenty of running groups, early risers and best of all - dogs in the Cafe !
And the fire is glorious on cold mornings. Wednesdays at 6am the community group has a 5 and 8k run.
Northriding still has power issues Honeydew as well
He moved in Feb after the whole Christmas power outage. They just can't seem to get it right. Not that I think they're trying. But anyway...
I hear they've completed the maintenance and are now repairing the water infrastructure near edenglen side
Riviera is also a gem
Riviera is so nice
Will definitely check it out too!
