Patreon is the online version of standing on a corner with a cup full of change and a really sad sign. I wouldn't exactly call it "making" money.

Not true. There are a lot of Patreon users who spend time and money to create quality content. Like Kenny's, and several others that I follow. Additionally, the good ones do not paywall everything they do. Most people on patreon are actually providing a service, not just panhandling and begging for nothing in return.

Correction: it's how people like Spenny use it. It's like when you go to a comic book convention and some has-been from the 80s is selling photos and autographs. They want to make money off of just existing.
