If you count it as a remake of Hum
The performances definitely made a huge difference, The D-9 combo felt more appropriate than Venkatesh-3sha combo.(Kota srinivasa rao was great though)
M kumaran son of Mahalakshmi and thozha. I know some may disagree but if you gave me the choice I'll watch thozha over the original, the untouchables is a very great movie but it's a remake done right make it more relatable to the local audience just like kaathalum kadanthu pogum. It's funny and the emotions also work. M kumaran is better because of jayam ravi.
Controversial, but I'm gonna choose Nanban. Sure, Vijay na couldn't match Aamir Khan. But he doesn't need to. The movie was as fun as the original (with better music by Harris)
Even though I know some hindi ( like the konjam konjam aata hai pikachu meme /s) and can manage with subs, the nanban scenes were funnier to me and more immersive
I think a lot of nuance can be missed in the subs and one of the rare instances I was grateful for the remake
WHAT, People actually think this?
The original had so much soul. The only way one can possibly think this is if you don’t know a lick of Hindi.
Also, give me some sunshine >>>> nanban album.
Personally didn't like Maara much. It miss the magic and fantasy of the original.
+Have no clue why they went for Fort Kochi when they could have set it in Pondicherry.
Nope! Mohanlal was better than him or Ajay devgan
Even though Kamal is a better actor than Mohanlal, georgekutty was way better than sanmukhan!
Making wise Hindi drishyam was better!
Not at all. Papanasam was clearly better. I'll tell you why.
When Kamal decided to situate the story in Papanasam, a place where people go to destroy their sins, he had given it the philosophical depth (typical of Kamal's movies) that Drishyam (Malayalam), which is a mere crime thriller, clearly lacked. Everything else is a bonus.
Papanasam became a better film than Drishyam (Malayalam) before the first shot was filmed.
I understand that you have found a nice little trivia but that has nothing to do with the actual film. The original Dhrishyam protagonist needs to be an unapologetic character, so it was believable when Mohanlal wouldn't break even after custodial torture and seeing his family get beaten. Even the confession was out of empathy to the parents rather than him agreeing he did wrong, this is the reason they could build a convincing second part. Coming to philosophical depth, Dhrishyam means Vision which wants to convey that whatever the protagonist sees is his version of right and how he convinces others to see the same vision.
In the Tamil version, Kamal breaks down and asks for forgiveness and steers the narrative to a very different direction, which made it personally hard for me to believe how he didn't break sooner. There were certain grey shades to every character like in real life in the original Dhrishyam which was missing in Tamil. Moreover the chemistry between Mohanlal and Meena was better than Kamal-Gowthami and Ajay-Shreya, they were convincingly good as an active middle aged couple, which is an essential part of this story line.
Nice little trivia? Lmao. The fact that one is named Drishyam and the other is named Papanasam should indicate which one is a better film. And George Kutty (Mohanlal) is just a crime thriller hero whereas Suyambulingam (Kamal Haasan) is a flesh and blood person caught in a moral dilemma. There is no debate which one is better.
The philosophy of Drishyam is the more realistic one... "Your kin and family is more important than anything else to you. For them you will become selfish and go to any extent".
And in Papanasam climax he accepts the crime which is antithesis to all he was doing till that.
In Drishyam Georgekutty never even takes a slight risk and just tells the story of an uninvited guest and how they sent him away. He is calm, composed, and doesn't even use murder/killed/Reality in his "confession".
Moreover the sequel explored more philosophy related to crime, guilt, and punishment.
>"Your kin and family is more important than anything else to you. For them you will become selfish and go to any extent".
That is not "philosophy." That is what beasts and lesser humans do. Like George Kutty.
But Suyambulingam is not a lesser man. He saves his family too, yet he acknowledges his fall. He finds it in himself to feel for the other. அறிவினான் ஆகுவ துண்டோ பிறிதின்நோய் தந்நோய்போல் போற்றாக் கடை.
I have explained below why the Tamil version was better than the Malayalam version even before the Papanasam shooting began. Kamal plays a different game few other actors can.
This is an unpopular opinion , Ghajini is one of the good remakes. I know people are gonna say Momento is way better because Nolan made it. I agree with the fact that Nolan is a genius compared to Murugados, but somehow, Ghajini was way more fun to watch compared to Momento. Momento was great but very confusing compared to Ghajini.

This was too good in tamil
Id think so, munna bhai mbbs was tailor made character for sanju baba. Nobody could relieve the character like him
It’s as good as original. Like the title says.
Meh.. But i find munna bhai more appealing and entertaining , mainly becoz the munna-circuit combo. That didn't go well in tamil me.
no dude, keeping bias apart, hindi version is better
Kadhalum kadanthu pogum.
My favourite
Avvai Shanmugi. Funnier than Mrs Doubtfire.
It's not a remake, it's a copy.. but I agree with you

Truly! Infact some places in 3 idiots kinda felt boring, especially Kareena kapoor's portions... nanban was an upgrade.
+1
Same but i chose nanban because of my nostalgia and childhood memories with it...

Free advice - Different people have different opinions and preferences. Stop getting so fragile over it.

Fragile.
Defo Thillu Mullu

Oh Manapenne is as good as the original imo. Might differ for others but I really loved it.

It's a crime thriller, because they added philosophical elements doesn't make it better It's a crime thriller that's enough!
exactly! I was eagerly waiting for a genuine reason from the guy on why he claims Papanasam is better but wtf😅
Haha okay. Papanasam will be talked about when Drishyam was forgotten though.
say this reason enough times because you would be mostly alone with this opinion 😂
you say it like that is a bad thing

The Malayalam version was way superior, if you only saw the Ajay Devgan version I can understand where you're coming from

Was waiting for someone to post this
Suyambulingam supremacy
There are alot of good remakes tbh, some examples would be Ghilli , M Kumaran , Vasool Raja, Avvai Shanmughi, Pokkiri and many more .
I was going to say Maara as well, great movie ..

Ah yes, Add more masala= better than a perfect thriller
Hahahaha hahahaha 😂😂😂 as good as Charlie? Better than Charlie? Hahahahaha
