That was a different time, when the “athletes” were old men who were smoking, drinking, not taking care of their bodies, etc. He wouldn’t last a minute in today’s game. But still a legend, and a huge part of American history.

Only if you disregard home runs, RBI, batting average, on base %, slugging %, WAR, championships and the 95 games Ruth won as a pitcher. Then yeah, Mays was better.
Wouldn't that technically be "most successful of all time" ?
When I think goat I also think mindset, attitude, love for the game, it's the player exciting to watchand, talent and them success. There's a GOAT of every era but only one player is the most successful and only one is the best.
Willy Mays was better than a guy who was a World Series winning pitcher before winning 6 more World Series championships and hitting over 700 home runs, partially in the dead ball era that he dragged the sport out of?
Interesting take
It’s weird to see “goat” used like this, especially in a baseball context. The “goat” used to be the guy that lost the game for the team. The guy you blamed for striking out with the bases loaded, or allowing the winning run to score, that kinda thing. Nowadays the term has been completely reversed in meaning.
And still to this day, I always think of the line from ERB "just think what you coulda done if you had actually trained."
The ultimate show me the money.

Hate to tell ya, but folks who study baseball consider Willie Mays to be the GOAT, Babe is #2

I don't follow basebal. I merely quoted what other baseball greats said and THEY said Willie Mays was the GOAT.

Did you just wake up out of 20 year coma?
Longer than that…I’m a time traveler from the 1980s.
Charlie Brown fan.
Well, that’s true, lol…but it WAS a term used in that way before Charlie Brown.
The future is now Old man
As a survivor fan too they use the term goat to talk about someone you want to bring to the end that won’t get any votes
Do you not know what GOAT stands for?
Oh, I know.
I don't think you did.
“Greatest of all time”. I was just pointing out how odd it was that the meaning has reversed from what it USED to mean several decades ago.
Josh Gibson is THE GOAT.
Is he the one on the right?
“The sultan of swat! The sultan of swat!”
MLB.com says [Willie Mays](https://www.mlb.com/news/willie-mays-goat-baseball#:~:text=Willie%20Mays%20is%20the%20GOAT,baseball%20giant%2C%20dies%20at%2093)
Josh Gibson?
