Have you seen the video where the husband cleans the gutters and the wife cleans the inside of the house? Funny thing is he doesnāt even have gutters.
Technically what heās doing isnāt wrong. But if he keeps doing it the way heās doing it now, heāll be done before Thanksgiving dinner is ready.
Either he needs to go buy a manual aerator that you step on, rent an aerator for $75 and split it with some neighbors, or hire someone to do it.
There are tools for aerating lawns, he could rent one and do the whole lawn in an hour.

What he's doing is as intelligent as mowing the lawn with pruning shears.
16% of the population of the United States have an IQ lower than 85 (the minimum to join the army if I remember correctly). Thatās nearly 53 million people that the army wonāt even let boil potatoes. You are in fact surrounded by idiots.
I just feel that using power tools is cheating, you know? If you're gonna do something, do it right. Drill those holes with a good old-fashioned hand drill.
It'll make a man out of your dominant arm, at least.
My neighbor cuts his lawn with these stand up pruning shear deals. He does a few dozen square feet every day during the summer. He said it gets him out of the house exercising and away from his wife, and he doesnāt care if the lawn is always uneven. Older guys sometimes choose the long way, but itās not really intelligence related.
This is "spiked aerator" , for optimal grass growth you'll want one of [these](https://www.amazon.com/Yeeoy-Coring-Aerator-Half-Open-Compaction/dp/B0C9ZGDLWF)
Not the tool I would recommend either, but I suppose itās better than his solution. Go rent a real aerator from HD and do it the right way in under an hour, then line up some other lawns to do after & pay for the rental. Or as someone else suggested split the cost with neighbors
*takes long drag off a crack pipe*
Life's not about the destination man, it's all about the journey āļø
and my journey seems to be leading me to your walls for your copper š
Iām an electrician and I use Milwaukee. Most guys do at this point. They cornered the toolbox market with their Pack Outs, and it seems like most guys either consciously or subconsciously get matching tools, over time. They also have a very wide range of offerings, with a good warranty backing it all up
That's sad, i had no idea. I just know my dad was a DeWalt man and in one of my marketing courses in undergrad it was mentioned in a textbook regarding the tool colour :p
Ive tried for years to kill my Ryobi drill. Bought Dewalts best drill a few years ago which is clearly superior in every possible way but I always give the crap jobs to the ryobi hoping it dies.
My old Ryobi driver is so underpowered it will never die. 14 years that POS has been rattling around in the back of truck. I built five kitchens with it in the early years and then upgraded to Makita in '18 when it couldn't drive a 8" Timberlok. The Makita has smoked twice. That Ryobi was there to carry me through a frustratingly dog slow afternoon both times with my guys ragging me because I'm too cheap to carry an extra $80 tool when our combined hourly rate is $220hr.
You do it for a living and the ryobi has treated you well. Makes me feel good about my set. Probably 10 years old and every piece I have still works perfectly. As a homeowner, my set probably has less use than yours had in the first two weeks.
Man, you read that differently than I do. Treated me well only in the sense of it hasn't died. Aside from that it's passable at best. Battey life isn't great. It's severely underpowered compared to a three generation back Makita. It's heavy. It feels clunky.
hardest part of renting an aerator is moving it to and from the rental place, get a neighbor with a truck to help for free aeration and you're good to go
Put my aerator rental in the back of my Telluride. Lifted it down and couldn't get it back to when I was done. Had to ask my neighbor for a hand.
Gravity is a bitch.
Absolutely. My neighbor has a truck and I pay him 60/40 because he picks it up and drops it off. We knock out both of our lawns in less than 1.5 hours.
There sure is a lot of hate on this thread for your husband's deep core aeration. If there is a better way to get a 12 inch core, I would love to hear it.
Deep core is especially useful in residential when the builder used infertile/low organic matter subsoil for the lawn. Roots can't penetrate heavily compacted subsoils. Amending the whole thing is impractical, but providing a 1 foot deep core backfilled with compost will let your grass grow roots deep enough to survive drought and harsh summer heat.
Take a look at a ["drill & fill" 12 inch aeration machine](https://youtu.be/SfJ_bBgA6g8?si=mwfINqWTVE64uNMk) for a golf course.
This is the correct answer.
I had a neighbor that lived below us who'd argue with his wife and then he'd go outside and shovel the walk to blow off steam. Halfway through the winter the entire front yard was shoveled clean.
The best way to aerate your lawn is with a shotgun. 12 gauge is best, 00 buckshot or at least #4 shot. Stand on top step of stepladder, start blasting away from farthest edge to nearest your ladder. Quick, eazy and fun!
Here is my brother-in-law doing the same thing about a year ago, and the results. He definitely got the last laugh.

Fucking up his bits lmfao. Reminds me of trying to prune a rose bush with kitchen shears. Snapped the blade right in half. Wife was livid.
Tell him to get a proper aerator. You can get them for like 30 bucks on the cheap end. Home Depot's got em. Garden section at Walmart might too. Pretty sure you can rent them too

People do aerate their lawns, this isnāt how they typically do it though
You have the drain their, my guess is the soil around it has been compacted from rain. Aerating the lawn can help the grass grow which I believe your husband is trying to do
Deep core aeration is a technique used to bring air and nutrients to the root systems. In a month after, use compost Tea and Molasses mix to bolster the quantity of active bacteria.
Actual answer (not that the jokes aren't funny):
Your husband believes that the lawn is in extremely heavy clay soil. So he's using a drill instead of a core aerator since the drill can create much deeper plugs (holes in the ground).
He will then fill these holes with compost, which will break down the heavy clay soil.
Looking at the pic, he may be neglecting a few things:
- He could use an extension on the auguer bit to avoid needing to bend down
- He should be using an auger bit at least an inch in diameter
- He should get a bucket, and drill a hole in it that's slightly wider than the bit. Then drill down through the hole, and the clay getting pulled out will end up in the bucket (instead of all over the yard and back in the hole)
*Aerating* is what he is saying and what people are telling you here is what heās doing is so dumb because itās quite literally the equivalent of mowing your yard with scissors. Aerating is where you poke holes in the whole yard and a proper aeration aerates small holes 3 inches apart. Imagine drilling holes 3 inches apart for that whole yard. Itād probably take a few days.
With aeration you typically poke the holes in the whole yard and then put seed over it so the seed will go into the holes so they will be directly underground instead of above ground and get more air and water than just putting seed on the yard.
Heās going to be out there long enough the holes he drilled will start coming back together honestly.
Just think about making a hole every 3 inches in rows until the whole yard is done. Itās never going to get done.
Thatās why so many people are wondering if youāre joking because this is just insane.
Only thing I can see this would be plausible is if youāre doing a spot thatās like super tiny, as in 1 square foot
There is a steel pronged rake in the picture. He could just lay this down and step on it and he would be done 50 times faster. Well as long as he laid it pointy side down, otherwise it will be over much quicker but it wonāt be done either.
Either he really just doesnāt want to be near you or you should look up ālawn aeratorā and buy one. They make little holes in your yard for fertilizer and water and O2.
TBF, if he is just doing that small section of dirt, this is prolly faster than figuring out a way to rent/haul/return an aerator, assuming you even have a truck or hitch and trailer. If he is happy and out side....let him roll.
I mean, heās got the right idea, but heās definitely doing things the hard way. They have tools for lawn aeration. You can find them at most gardening stores for like $50-100.
I figure he will burn out those drills and his back before he is done. After he gets done with this job maybe he can dig some post holes with some teaspoons. I guess doing it this way has a tedious zen quality about it...
Ahhh, just go hand him a larger drill bit...maybe 1"...then relax, kick back w/ a glass of wine, and enjoy the "determination" of your devoted husband. Whatever you do, don't let him touch any electrical or gas line related tasks....especially when you're in the house. š
They make slip over plugger for your shoes so you can walk around and leave goose turd looking plug all over your yard instead of crawling around like a crazy with dueling drill guns
Putting him on blast??? If you donāt have any clue what heās doing did you ask him what airifying is and what its purpose was? Did you google it before asking?
In laws in town?
This needs to be higher on the list of comments.
Agreed š

Technically, his core aeration with the drill bits is more effective then the spline aerator you linked. That is literally useless for aeration.
Sure, you could rent a tool, but it will never be as good as this artisanal hand-aerating.

Those drills also work well as a hammer.
Grade A shitpost, congrats.

It's a dumb way to do this. He's not wrong, but he's not working smart.
When I aerate my lawn I buy a couple edging stakes and then I use a hammer and pound the nails into the ground before pulling them back out.
I donāt think he likes spending time with his wife
He's trying to avoid you, yet there you are, taking pictures of him and posting it on Reddit. Poor guy.
I can't tell if her posts are jokes or if they really actually have a terrible relationship.
After reading her OP's other comments, I'm convinced this is the answer.

Either he really just doesnāt want to be near you or you should look up ālawn aeratorā and buy one. They make little holes in your yard for fertilizer and water and O2.
He means he wanted to aerate the lawn and this isn't bad, just a very time cosuming way.
This is a man who has a screaming toddler inside, i bet my life on it
I used to do this professionally for golf courses. My machine had over 100 tines that punched every few seconds. With a drill....I can't even.
No need to worry until he wants to edge the sidewalk with a circular saw like my now fingerless neighbor did.
How hard is the soil you need to use a drill. Go buy a $20 pitchfork and stab awayā¦ or get and actual push aerator
