What’s the percentage of different turfs you have. I have TTTF with 7% of KBG. Also. Do you ever have K31 come in. It’s that clumping fescue. Corse blades. I hate it
It doesn’t anymore, not sure how to help with that. Since it’s technically just a different breed of tall fescue I’m not sure what to do. I just kept overseeding and it went away. Maybe on the sides there is a little but it seems to get choked out by the better varieties.
Nice. If I see it I pull it out. I think I will get some glyphosate and carefully use a paint brush and apply it to the k31 where ever I see it. Hope it kills the roots and the overseed will prevent it from coming back
K31 is tough stuff it took 10+ years after k31 to get it to this point and it’s still no where close to “perfect”. That method seems like it will work though, just tedious.
He's talking about Kentucky blue grass, perennial rye grass, and turf type tall fescue. The big three cool season grass types (less fine fescue, which is often used for shade resistance but is largely an inferior turf grass).
I actually have fine fescue on my side vanity strip (which is mostly shaded but gets some sun) and it’s great. It spreads unlike most cool season turf grasses barring KBG which is really high maintenance, so it’s never patchy and honestly looks great. It’s a super fine blade so it’s also really soft. If I did a complete reno, I’d consider it just because of how low maintenance it is. I don’t even fertilize it and it does awesome.
Thanks, I’m just not familiar with the acronyms. I like to use a fescue blend everywhere because of its strength and resilience. I only use PR for clients who want instant results/ are impatient or don’t care. I’m not a fan of blue grass because of our local weather in the PNW it struggles in the deep droughts then gets hammered in the snow.
Fescues are very underrated imo. Can survive in both warm and cold. Doesn’t need as much care, tall fescue has medium shade tolerance and obviously fine fescues have the best shade tolerance. Both sprout in 7-21 days too
I've literally experimented with using a laser to make my lines tighter. I have special glasses and everything so I can see it in the daylight. It works okay, what I found actually is if I start not at the edge but rather in the middle and use a known reference point and then propagate out from there I end up with much more precise lines with respect to whatever I'm trying to align the lines with.
tl:dr; I'll see myself out...
That is definitely the technique. Start in the middle/your longest line. Set yourself up, scan your path for obstructions, then pick a point in the distance and stare straight at it the entire time you're walking/driving to it.
https://preview.redd.it/tnv1y6td9p3d1.jpeg?width=2424&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f397d1f2da50965c2a550aeebf2d2226fe15f47a
Front gets doubles the back is too small imo
Pick a target straight in the direction you want, don’t take your eyes off, it and mow towards it, then the rest of the lines are based off that initial line
The lines make your yard look longer than it actually is. If the lines went left-right then the yard would appear wide instead of big. I think that's why the lines are more appealing, they make the yard look bigger.
Both are excellent, but I like the cross hatch more. It seems to make your yard that much larger for some reason and adds a lot of depth with the different shades of green
The single stripe seems to draw the eye across the lawn. It gives it nice long look. The crosshatch seems to interrupt the “flow” so to speak. It looks too busy, or something.
They both look good. From that perspective the single lines moving away from you make your yard look bigger and more open. If that's where you spend most of your time, keep it that way!
I agree. I run single stripes and rotate my direction each cut, so
https://preview.redd.it/yosdcm5u0s3d1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64b124c6d4c6523b25fd2b1d51b9e7373aceef10
I do tend to get some faint cross hatch from the previous cut. If you look close, you can see some of the stripes going parallel to the house, stemming from the big tree in the fence.
I e always been told that mowing in different directions keeps grass growing strait and healthy. I generally stick to single direction lines per cut, but the weeks prior always show through some.
https://preview.redd.it/iioa9vda8s3d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b46593394a3447f2039658e7311ac194a9f2d674
Striping kit! These are done with this contraption I made:
https://preview.redd.it/gddvs93fmv3d1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c68ab972294e2890b978ee33b448552464abaaa
I tend to do a weekly rotation.
Week 1: Stripes lengthwise.
Week 2: Stripes widthwise.
Week 3: Diagonal one angle.
Week 4: Diagonal the other angle.
And then I rinse 'n repeat.
I end up with crosshatch just because I shift pattern direction every time to combat ruts forming. I only mow in one direction (back and forth) every time.
I shift my pattern too, I do exactly the same thing you said lol. Although with a reel the ruts aren’t really an issue because the weight is distributed across the “drum”
Striping kit! I have a big league on my rotary and a custom fixture on my reel! It makes mowing really fun almost like an art. I use suncalc to figure out the best directions to mow for viewing from the house/street
I tried it before with no stripes, not as satisfying to mow. Maybe one day I’ll switch back to the no stripe life, I think they look equally as good. My neighbor mows no stripes, I like stripes, I think they both look fantastic.
I’m with you there. The single lines really pop from that perspective.
Yeah I think so too
I think it looks really shltty. I hate the brilliant contrast and symmetry. And the uniform turf. Fifty downthumbs.
Trust me it’s not uniform, there kbg, tttf and prg in this lawn. My neighbors lawn is all uniform tttf. Much better than this.
What’s the percentage of different turfs you have. I have TTTF with 7% of KBG. Also. Do you ever have K31 come in. It’s that clumping fescue. Corse blades. I hate it
Yeah this was a K31 lawn years ago. No idea the percentages, mostly use overseed with tttf/kbg mix but use prg for patching
Yea my bag is a mixture of tttf and kgb. Does the k31 ever come back. And if so. How do you get rid of it
It doesn’t anymore, not sure how to help with that. Since it’s technically just a different breed of tall fescue I’m not sure what to do. I just kept overseeding and it went away. Maybe on the sides there is a little but it seems to get choked out by the better varieties.

I agree. Very tedious. My yard is small and it’s 1,000 sf. Only one section has random spots of it
Hey can you please explain to me what grass cultivars you are referring to by these letters? Excuse my ignorance just trying to learn.

Same, love my creeping red fescue. It stripes surprisingly good too

Exactly, the beauty there is just downright distasteful.
Top shelf work. Is that Amen Corner??
Everyone talking about the grass and I'm over here jealous of the azalea...
Both!!
Those aren't assholes. It's pronounced "azaleas"
I’ll take either one 😢
do you use a laser guide lol.

😂😂
I like the cross hatch. Can you do a double cross hatch?
Single lines look stunning. What mower are you using
Diamonds all day
Try doubling the width of the stripes before doing the checkerboard.
https://preview.redd.it/tnv1y6td9p3d1.jpeg?width=2424&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f397d1f2da50965c2a550aeebf2d2226fe15f47a Front gets doubles the back is too small imo
Get rid of those mulch volcanos! Your trees will thank you!!

Since line is a bbq. The cross hatch is when you are hosting Easter brunch.
Never been a fan of perfect, so fuck you.
Ok now do circles and cubes.
That's how I mow in a circle!
Kinda like the cross pattern. Its like if you are going full luxury castle style you gotta go all the way.
Cross hatch is too much work and then I think about it… for what? Single stripe ftw
Checkered looks cool
Both are great but I love the cross. You can't go wrong either way though.
Both look great. Nice lawn
Damn dude this is beautiful. I’d take either 😂
Both look sexy af. How do you mow so straight?
Pick a target straight in the direction you want, don’t take your eyes off, it and mow towards it, then the rest of the lines are based off that initial line
Just like taxiing an aircraft lol. I appreciate the tip!
Agree, I like the stripes. The crosshatch is beautiful too, but it is busy with the steps and flowers.
Shucks. Both look prime to me.
Could you please explain how this is done. I've tried so many times to do this and never even come close.
https://preview.redd.it/xf1nf2zv8p3d1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2badaf6c1c6760fd930b90a9e4b748a51c54b0a

You need a lawn striper. Just Google it.
Yes
Add a single stripe picture with the pink blossoms
They just bloomed this week, single stripes was last week, wife does the plants couldn’t tell you what they were lol
Azalea
Tell me you don't play golf without telling me you don't play golf.
I actually hate plaid, but really like cross hatch stripes. I prefer mine with a slight diamond shape but usually mess it up.
Try single lines by angles towards the deck like the second line in the crosshatch
The lines make your yard look longer than it actually is. If the lines went left-right then the yard would appear wide instead of big. I think that's why the lines are more appealing, they make the yard look bigger.
True
Does that work for male body parts? 😂
Jacquard all the way
Try a checkerboard.
Sometimes it looks good. Sometimes it doesn't. Your red birds are fire. Nice healthy blooms.
I like the crisscross better
It’s like asking men if we’re T or A men
Both are awful. Just terrible. You should be ashamed of such tripe.
Beautiful
Thank you!! 👍👍
Both are excellent, but I like the cross hatch more. It seems to make your yard that much larger for some reason and adds a lot of depth with the different shades of green
Ever try zigzag?
That’s above my pay grade
Nah bro, scotch tartan is where it's at
If your lines are that crisp, less is definitely more.
Checkered is the way to go
Single lines, but changing angle each time.
Stripe man here.
I love both.
Singles or diamond
The single stripe seems to draw the eye across the lawn. It gives it nice long look. The crosshatch seems to interrupt the “flow” so to speak. It looks too busy, or something.
Stripes 100%
Cross hatch. Beautiful yard either way!
They both look good. From that perspective the single lines moving away from you make your yard look bigger and more open. If that's where you spend most of your time, keep it that way!
Single lines forever.

Single! Definitely!
I agree!
how do i get stripes like this? i can never seem to get mine to be so prominent, even with my homemade stripe roller.
Striping kit! These are done with this contraption I made: https://preview.redd.it/gddvs93fmv3d1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c68ab972294e2890b978ee33b448552464abaaa
Agreed
I think if you’re gonna cross it you gotta go perfect 90 degree angle
I tend to do a weekly rotation. Week 1: Stripes lengthwise. Week 2: Stripes widthwise. Week 3: Diagonal one angle. Week 4: Diagonal the other angle. And then I rinse 'n repeat.
Stripes over picnic table cloth for sure
I end up with crosshatch just because I shift pattern direction every time to combat ruts forming. I only mow in one direction (back and forth) every time.

NGL this is a foreign language to me but I want to learn. My lawn sucks and I want more from it
Sick dude.
How do you create strips?
Teach me this technique.
You're kinda crazy too. But it's kinda your own opinion. Looked great either way! 👍
How do you do this? I’m new to lawn care.
Mow a different direction each time to eliminate wheel marks.
I prefer no stripes but those flowers are really pretty..
I’m not a fan of stripes, I prefer the smooth Augusta golf course look but I came here to say nice job and it looks beautiful!
I tried it before with no stripes, not as satisfying to mow. Maybe one day I’ll switch back to the no stripe life, I think they look equally as good. My neighbor mows no stripes, I like stripes, I think they both look fantastic.
