Doesn't rally matter, just try to make it look like a circle. You can try all kinds of pieces with a hole or with "claws"

Just one of those is not really big enough for this effect.

Multiple in a ring would also allow you to attach them around a central point which the shell could be mounted on.

You could have alternating white, clear, and orange bricks kind of like how the Lego movie did explosions.

Cotton balls with an LED works wonders for "natural looking" explosions. Just as a clear rod with a brick at the end for the shell

I'd use transparent bricks with a light brick. If you want more realistic, cotton that's colored to look the part makes a good blast cloud. People use tye second for stands for their Lego rockets.

Yup, one of these, finding a good place to hide the button to make it light up will be important.

It works pretty well is you can hide the light part with a orange clear brick, projects and orange light nicely

If you don’t care about the muzzle blast NOT being made from Lego, you could get cotton balls and some orange LEDs to make it look super accurate.

Also, if you do take it apart to make instructions, record video with good lighting so you have a video record of how you did it. Much easier to figure out a step on paper if not clear when you can reference video.

The clear bar 12L with 1x2 Plate could possible be shoved in the muzzle and then a projectile added to the end. You can also add the other muzzle flash people were talking about.

I’m with the folks saying use a combination of trans clear and trans orange. You could also mix in some trans red and yellow for a bit of variety. My other quirky idea would be to use orange flower pieces mounted on stems and shape them into a sphere. Edit: very nice tank btw
