Interestingly this is part of the reason they stopped showing alternative builds in the back of instruction books. Parents would complain that their kid couldn’t build the alternative designs because the instructions weren’t included, without realising it was meant to show what you could do with creativity and imagination.
I find that super interesting! At the risk of sounding like a jerk, do you remember your source for that? It's a fun fact I know I'll be sharing in the future and was curious if you heard/read it from a Lego interview/article or if it was read from another reddit comment or something.

You’re correct it came in 3 sets, but in 2 of them it’s on tentacle monsters and in the third it’s just an eye in a glass case.

On second glance it is pretty modified from that if it is that.
It's not from a set, the eyes only came in 3 sets and none have lime tentacles
