I wouldn't bleach them, i think you could end up discolouring them. And I don't know what a bar heater is, but just make sure it's not so hot as to melt the plastic is all I'd suggest. Otherwise, I don't really know of any 'ettiquette'. All I know is that people usually sell mixed lego by the KG. I think if the hitch in your plan is to remove the choking hazards/pieces smaller 10mm, you'll probably just have to do that yourself which is very time consuming. When sorting lego, I find it easiest to lay it all out on a flat surface and separate the pieces as best you can. It's still time consuming, bit personally I find it the quickest way to identify the pieces I want to pick out first.

Thanks for the help. Bleach looks like it may be a no go. I will keep an eye out for melting plastic when drying them. After drying the first batch and blowing them with a large fan I found the small prices tend to fly away. If I give them a blast of compressed air I may be able to sort them quickly.

Laundry detergent works well, it breaks down any organic matter stuck to the bricks and makes them smell good

Now you have got me eyeing the washing machine. Must wait until the wife is out...

Lukewarm water and laundry detergent in a sink would do, wouldn’t want to risk getting studs lost in the washing machine ;)

A very simple but nice-looking package idea if you are talking a bunch of small amounts is to get red syran wrap, put a bunch of Legos in the center of the wrap, then collect the ends of the wrap and tie them with ribbon and a fancy bow. For larger amounts you could get a see-through storage container like a flour holder, put the legos in it, then put some Lego stickers on the outside with a big bow that has a minifig tied on it.
