I live in IL so I am not going anywhere, I am starting to feel like no where is safe in the world at the moment as people are voting for the right at the moment due to people being upset with their current govement's inefectiness

I'm absolutely terrified at the way things are going in general, but the way things are going in Illinois generally worries me much, much less.
I just visited my sister and her fiancé in Chicago a little over a month ago. She moved there last year from where I currently live in Nebraska. The difference between there and here is wild. I felt so much more welcome in Chicago. People openly showed support for LGBTQ+ people everywhere I went.
I would love to move there to be safer, but I don't want to abandon my community in Nebraska. I feel like I have to do my best to _try_ to get things to improve here. I also don't have the money to move, so it's probably not really anything to get my hopes up about.
Also, the transportation there was amazing compared to Omaha. My sister showed me how to buy a pass on my phone to use the buses and trains. Everything went so smoothly and getting from one part of the city to the other was a breeze.
they fr need to put Pritzker, Gretchen Whitmer or Gruesome Gavin Newsome in for president. They are by no means angels themselves but at least they are amenable, coherent and have a shot at winning.
sadly though even winning this election only partially delays the exact same issues we are having right now. there has to be some heavy push back and radical change, which unforunately establishment dems / libs are heavily unequipped to deal with.

I've been looking into getting a passport but I need a birth certificate (I only have my old one with my deadname), which I'm currently waiting to get updated (thanks California Department of Public Health for taking literally 4-5 months to process). I guess I should just be lucky to be born in a blue state. But as soon as I get that updated certificate I'm applying for a passport. Gonna gtfo of this shithole as soon as there are signs of things going south
You can get a passport with your legal name with your old bc and your name change document.
It's a slightly different form, but it doesn't take longer than a normal passport application or renewal.
100% - my wife did this. We had to bring her bc, her first marriage license (where she changed her name to her ex’s), her name change to something else, and then her change to my name. But yes, you totally can do that.
Indeed you can. They changed all of my info with my renewal, all I did was send a certified copy of the name/change order from the judge with it and fill out the form with my new information. Got the passport in about 5 weeks.
Passports can do so much more than just allow you to leave: they can be used in place of almost any other ID (among other things). In fact, you should get the book & the plastic passport ID. If your state will not correct your gender or name, the Feds still will.
It's not about leaving. It's about having a federal id with the correct gender marker. State IDs are about to get real fraught-- see Florida's fraud bullshit.
The Rainbow Railroad is a LGBT refugee resettlement organization that helps those escaping dangerous situations. Mostly country to country moves, but they might also be able to direct people to smaller city or state organizations. Some cities are expanding their asylum programs to include state to state lgbt refugees. Some of these organizations focus on housing, employment as well as mental health.
There is also an app called Inreach that can help locate services and assistance.
I’d imagine if trump wins, there will be a semi exodus of queer people as they move to the PNW, places like Seattle, portland, etc, as those states have made it staunchly clear that they will not support legislation that infringes upon LGBT people, which they also stated - and have done, with abortion access rights. So I’d imagine you’ll see a lot of lgbt people fleeing to Washington, Oregon, etc, if trump wins.
This isn’t completely true. The majority of these rules (at least in Western Europe) are about disabilities that make you completely unable to care for yourself. Yes that still rules out plenty of disabled folks but people with a diagnosis of something like ADHD or Autism are not immediately turned away. On top of that (in my experience in Europe) it’s not like they make you get a clear bill of health from a doctor, it’s mostly based on self reporting.
That’s unfortunate for disabled people wanting to relocate to New Zealand. It seems like Australia and Canada have similar restrictions too. As I mentioned my experience in Europe (France specifically) has largely been based on whether you can financially support yourself. The negative counterpoint is that France does not classify a lot of things as a disability…. Side note, Sweden and Germany have specific rules prohibiting immigration discrimination based on disability.

Idk just try your best to leave. California is expensive but certain cities have wages to match. There’s so much community here that you will be able to make your way through.

as someone who’s only lived in blue states, this is a quite privileged take because for some people the move itself isn’t even affordable. it’s not so much about the cost of living once they’re in california or elsewhere, but they might not even have the resources to get there in the first place. it’s not that simple for everyone

in a perfect world they’d be able to move easily. my point is that not everyone can. good for us for having options, but let’s not be ignorant and just be aware that some people simply don’t.

Like, if an area needs to evacuate due to a wildfire, and someone says "that's a privilege not everyone can"....yes? And? Provide viable alternatives or resources for people who can't. Otherwise it's just....kinda not worth stating the obvious just for the sake of stating it.
probably it because it diverges from the point of my original reply. i’ve also never been in that situation so i wouldn’t know the alternatives, and i would much rather allow someone who actually has that experience to lead that aspect of the conversation rather than speaking over them and assuming i know their situation better than they would, which is adjacent to what the person i originally replied to has done.
The options boil down to: run any way you can or hide any way you can.
Hide=go back in closet/go stealth if possible (stealth gets harder in red states with ID restrictions though hence passport urgency). Get a beard, take down flags, lie, don't come out if you haven't. Save living openly for when you can live in a safe area.
Run=leave as best you can. Maybe that means no plan other than to drive when the danger is so immediate that there is no other option. Maybe it means finding a person in another state who can give you room and board (be careful of that bc some of those situations result in abusive situations that are hard to get out of). Obviously its best to leave with some amount of plans/money. Look for jobs with a relocation allowance, look for jobs out of state in general, crowdfund if you can safely do so.
There is also this charity: https://www.rainbowrailroad.org/ although they are global, I'm not sure what their work looks like domestically but I'm sure they will adapt if America gets worse, so keep an eye on that. If anyone else knows of similar charities or nonprofits I would love to have more resources.
"Leaving is the only option for some people" is not the same as "just leave". And again like, fine to say not everyone can leave but provide resources/alternates otherwise it is just stating the obvious. To be frank we are quickly moving towards a situation where it is safer to get on a bus and be homeless in a blue state than it is to stay in some red states.
You misunderstand. There is one other option to leaving. Its staying. I live in Texas. I cant move. My family cant move. We can barely afford the house we live in. You think its safer to be a HOMELESS trans person than a housed trans person? Im sorry but that take is so profoundly out of touch.

If Trump wins and things like Project 2025 become law, the state you live in will matter very little. There won't really be a thing such as blue states anymore. They talk about classifying "transgender ideology" as pornography in the Project 2025 plan, and outlawing all porn and putting "purveyors of porn", which in their view includes any propagation of pro trans or pro lgbtq views, in jail or made to register as sex offenders. This will be a federal law, so it won't matter what state you're in.
I know this is the plan, but will every region, to a man, enforce it? Recall how states decriminalized marijuana to little response despite it being federally illegal. Will a Republican led government become so effective as to end run the will of every last official?
That remains to be seen, but I think betting on the 'ineffectiveness' of literal fascists and the ability of state governments to protect their citizens from the Federal government with all its power and force is probably not wise.
The one caveat I would offer to this, as a nonbinary person, would be to STRONGLY caution AGAINST getting a passport with an X marker. Supplying the government with a record of having a gender variant identity is very dangerous
Relocating within the US to a state with trans protection laws is a good bet. I relocated to Illinois from Florida and it's honestly the second best decision I've ever made in my life.
I just happen to be going to college during the entirety of the next presidental term. The college is in Philadelphia, which is a "sanctuary" city in a decent state.
And because I know how laws are passed (they need a majority in both Congress houses) we should be fine if either house has a Dem majority.
The power to disband a department also needs a majority of Congress to approve.
An Amendment needs ⅔ of both houses to be ratified.
And of course the Supreme Court can deem anything unconditional.
So even if Trump wins, keeping a majority in either Congress house should keep us safe.
SC just rules that the president can do anything in an “official” capacity and it’s not illegal, and he’s got free reign on pardons. Make no mistake, the far right politicians will dismantle anything they can to make America what they want it to be
I'm planning on leaving for Colorado if Trump wins. I'd already been planning on doing that after graduating college in Spring of 26. If Colorado is no longer safe, I plan on fleeing the US. As soon as it's announced if Trump wins, me and my partner are getting legally married (see below for why)
My partner has Czech ancestry but doesn't qualify for citizenship because their grandfather was born in the US (literally 3 months after their great-grandfather immigrated from what was then Czechoslovakia) and the Czech Republic only goes back 2 generations with ancestral citizenship. They still have some living relatives of their great-grandfather to ask about potential family members to sponsor us for citizenship in the Czech Republic. I know it's not the best in Europe but it's my only option. If I'm stuck in the US I'll likely be thrown in jail and v-coded until I'm executed.

Czechia is part of the Schengen Area; once you have the citizenship, you should be free to move and live throughout most of the EU.
My fallback plan is the Netherlands, but I know that’s only available to very few. There’s a company with an office there which I’m certain would help me get there if I agree to work for them again.
Enhanced IDs can be less expensive and will get you into both Canada and Mexico for those who can't afford passports and all. The enhanced IDs should get you far enough into said country and apply for asylum and other forms of refuge status. Canada is talking about making a streamlined service for trans individuals. If you can't afford to leave country there are safe house programs used along with programs in West Coast cities that helps support queer youth moving to said areas. Wishing the best for all of you
A passport should be fine but an Enhanced ID had multiple names sometimes ID plus stuff along those lines, usually available at your local DMV. I'm out by Seattle and they're roughly $60 but prices vary per state

Spain, but I am eligible for birthright citizenship and I’ve lived there for a few months out of the year In the Past. It’s also leaning right but it’s heavily dependent on the region and the Vox party has been floundering because their red pill policies are deeply unpopular. That and the LGBT rights there are solid, for the most part. Nothing is certain but it’s a good option for those who have the option.

no one cares, but they do care if you discuss it, and you gotta pass. That's unfortunate for those that don't pass, voice too deep, don't want bottom or top surgery. But I think its a good start and can be improved.
- If you don’t know whether you’re eligible for citizenship in another country, find out. Just go look it up. Today. (Use government websites preferably. Preferably NOT on websites that are trying to sell you their services.) If you need information you don’t have, get it. Bother your family. Contact official agencies.
- If you are eligible for citizenship in another country but haven’t filed for it, DO THAT. NGL, this can be very slow. Wheels of bureaucracy etc. It might take more than six months. Don’t let that stop you. This is literally something it’ll be good to have for the rest of your life.
- If you have citizenship in another country but not your passport from there, GET THAT.
This paperwork will almost definitely require going through weird bureaucratic hoops (maybe they don’t do electronic forms and it’s all paper you have to request, maybe you need non-relatives or a lawyer/doctor/something to sign off that you are who you say you are, maybe you need ID photos in a very specific format different from anything the US uses, maybe the instructions are confusing, whatever). Just deal with all of it. Get it submitted. Pay the fees. Ask for help where necessary.
Once it’s time to mail the whole stack of stuff off, PAY FOR THE EXPENSIVE VERIFIED EVERYTHING DELIVERY. Compared to a normal envelope it will cost a fortune. Pay it. I had to part temporarily with literally the ONLY document I had that demonstrated citizenship - the real thing, not a copy - to get a passport and I did not like doing that one bit. Worth doing? Yes. Worth mailing internationally with no insurance, no signature required, etc.? Feels like a bad plan.
This doesn’t address pets, employment, housing, language, what to do with your stuff, or family arguing with you. I know. But get it done.
What the fuck good is a passport gonna do for me? The most I could do is vacation for a few months. I don't have enough money to move and I don't have good enough skills to get a job that other countries are looking for.
The EU? Sorry, I'm not sure I understand. Passports are issued at the federal (country) level and each country has different regulations. This thread probably only applies to the US, because our concern is that we may lose our ability to self-ID gender on passports with a change in administration.
Well I have heard of enhanced ID having to be added with your passport if you were known by a different name and/or gender. It’s fine, someone was able to explain it for me
As a German myself, I can tell you that many of us were just as shocked. Even before the European elections there were numerous anti-fascist protests, which specifically spoke out about the AfD being a far-right party. I thought those protests would finally bring our people to their senses. It was devastating to see the results, and that's an understatement.
Many of us don't want to "let that happen" at all costs. It's just that, at this point, the right-leaning voters are much more organized than the left-leaning ones. It's like I'm watching history repeat itself and I can't do a thing about it. Even holocaust survivors have held speeches to warn us, claiming that "this is how it started" back then. Yet I still see AfD voters spitting nonsense in every German comment section, and I still hear relatives chanting neo-nazi songs.
Germany is leaning far right for their standards, but they're still much better than many other countries in the EU. As an anecdote: some guy in germany was so far right that even the AFD (the german right-extremist party) said they wanted nothing to do with them. A few days later he got invited to do a speech for the FPÖ (the austrian equivalent of the AFD) and was viewed as an inspiration (As I'm from Austria I consider moving too btw). Germany is taking nazi stuff REALLY serious with their laws.
Spain and Portugal are great but you’ll want to have a job lined up before going because the job market is BAD, that or pursue an education in something like healthcare where demand is consistent.
I’m from Saskatchewan, I’m very aware. But we have legal protections here and removing them would be too unpopular for conservatives to be seriously discussing it like in America.
As others have pointed out, the issues here are state governments not the federal. Conservatives in Congress don't, and will not have, the numbers to do anything about it on a national level. So it's a state level concern and even then the majority of the legislation is targeting trans kids who don't have the ability to move unfortunately

If Trump wins he wants to pull out of almost every single international agreement we have, suddenly having the largest economy in the world be pulled out of international trade is going to cause a complete collapse, which Fascists will have no problem exploiting. Not to mention that we are the center of most military agreements in the west, there isn't a single western democracy that is in a position to take our place.

I'm serious. It's a cosmopolitan capital city with good cuisine, public transport, accomodations, etc. The city mayor literally attended last month's pride parade. You've probably heard about the LGBTQ+-free zones legislation a few years back, but this was only in the rural, backwards regions + ended up getting torpedoed in no less than 6 months, which was surprisingly quick taking into account the fact there was a conservative president.
Correct me if im wrong but last time i spoke to my polish friend, he said there was literal homophobic ads on trains and busses. We dont even have that here in the US. Is that only happening in rural areas or something?

Dude I can't even make rent how am I supposed to afford a passport? Plus because I was born overseas (dual citizenship) I need extra documents and I'm not sure I can get the right gender marker on my passport cause of that.
You do have the bonus of not having decades of documented stuff done as an adult that would make you an easy target for roundups. Could help you slip under the radar should the need arise, as awful as it would be.

I'm following UK politics (at arms length, definitely not an expert) and apparently Labor front-benchers think that trans women should be excluded from women's restrooms.
No matter how bad the situation seems in the US, the UK is an entirely different can of worms that my American brain can't understand. Like are there any anti-trans Democrats? None that seem to be willing to admit it.

L not T, but started two years ago when Roe fell, and getting closer to a second passport. Hoping to have it by end of summer. Just to have more options.
And move where? Straight up moving to Canada is nowhere near as easy as you may think. You have to be able to prove that you've got a career lined up and that you will provide a beneficial impact to the country by moving there. Saying you're afraid of the US will not get you very far at customs.
I say relocate to a blue state if you can... but I also encourage those who can to stay and be there to support those who are trapped. Think of all the lgbt+ minors and people who can't afford to leave. I live in a blue state but am disabled + poor so the idea of leaving the US is a pipe dream... plus the right exists everywhere, and what happens in the US WILL affect other countries. Obviously do what you can to keep you and your loved ones safe, but remember that the answer isn't always to flee. Sometimes it's to be there for those who can't. And fight and defend, in whatever ways we can.
This is the third post about this in as many days where the poster forgets that most of us live in poverty and there isn't enough money going around to support us leaving. A passport is meaningless if we can't afford to use it. We need to work on actual solutions or stand up and fight, because fleeing isn't an option for the majority of us.
Almost all anti-trans legislation under trump and biden has been at the state level. There is little trump can do without the support of congress for the same reason biden never does anything for us. Instead of talking about what probably won’t happen, we should be looking at what we can do for/as trans people in red states.
This is totally wrong as Trump can ban gender marker changes on passport applications with one stroke of a pen in an executive order on day one on January 20, 2025. Get your passport now with your gender marker.
We all have ours in our family and they're good until 2030. I literally just checked my kid's to make sure. My kid wants to start transitioning and I am fucking terrified. I'm scared as a non binary person. Thankfully we live in Minnesota but who knows if suddenly the supreme court decides to overturn state law? I hate this with every fiber of my being. My partner isn't concerned. I absolutely am.
Yall are talking about leaving or hiding me I'm talking about arming up and resisting with force here's a little fact even to smallest part of the LGBTQIA community out number both police and federal agents and national guardsman in numbers and while politicians can pass laws all day long its not a law unless it can be enforced and they lack the numbers to enforce said laws if re resist so my suggestion dont run don't hide just bunker down arm up with whatever you can get and say i will not comply and force will be met with force remember pride started with a riot and we should remind the world that history will absolutely repeat itself that way if they mess with us
A few months? Wow, in the Netherlands I had my passport in one week. In the worst municipalities this once rose to 6 weeks and that was considered a violation as it is mandated to be 4 weeks!
Processing the birth certificate is a matter of days officially but in my instance, after signing the papers the entire government system changed for me within **hours**.
Even if I could leave I have no idea where I’d go. I know Canada certainly isn’t too much better off than us right now, and the UK is really getting aggressive towards us right now too.

One thing to consider is maybe doing a free IT bootcamp to improve your skills over the next few months.
Also, if you are thinking about moving to another country....if you have any kind of disability, you will not be allowed to move there. Most countries see it as a "drain on the economy". Crutches and Spice has some good breakdowns of this.
Hi! Transmasc (adult) currently going thru the whole name change process/update. This is general advice/tips from my personal experience, always check what the rules are for your state/state you plan to move to, because that may change the order of which things should be done.
What I've done that has made things simpler is getting name change first, social security second (where you can get your gender marker changed btw), and following through with the rest in order of "most important": driver's license, bank accounts, birth certificate, passport etc. Some of which can be done simultaneously.
Tbh if you are able to travel to a state that has a simpler/less expensive name change process, do it. I did mine in Kentucky and I just had to have an in state mailing address (which was a PO box) and a few other docs, didn't need to provide proof of residence or anything. Plus, paid wayyyyy less than when I tried in IL (who didn't give me my money back after they denied it).
ALSO!! Look into any LGBTQ+ orgs in your area/state that can help with things like documentation updates, relocation, etc. They can be really helpful!

I think you're talking about going into the closet for safety purposes (valid), but just in case: passport gender marker is self-ID. You do not need any supplementary documentation to change it. Nor does it need to match your other identification docs (just don't try to present conflicting docs at the same time).
This is not merely about leaving the country. It's about having an ID with an accurate name and gender marker too. States are going to do everything they can to prevent this.
I have all my docs in order, not by luck either. I was born in a red state, so I'm slightly concerned they with change my gender marker back at some point in the future, so I figure I need to keep my correct birth cert safe in case I ever need it.
Have an updated passport yes, have all your documents updated. Not because you’ll be leaving but because you might not be able to update them for a while. Get your surgeries scheduled, start hrt if you haven’t, DO EVERYTHING YOU HAVENT YET DONE. It will either be a rocky few years or hellish few years, we will not back down we will not abandon each other and we *WILL NOT LOSE*
Remember that you can self select your gender marker on your passport AND social security card as of right now!! Even if you don’t plan to leave the country, please get it if you’ve transitioned so you can have your identity documents in order for employment etc :)

BTW, if you're low income, you can get your passport for free or discounted. Also also you don't need your gender to match between documents. For example, my driver's license has the M marker and my birth certificate has the F marker.
I work remotely in Virginia for an organization that is in Pennsylvania. Luckily, my wife and I have the resources, and we'd probably up and move to PA if any hint of bad federal legislation/action came to be. Then we'd make plans to leave the US. However, it's pretty hard to uproot kids. If we didn't have kids, I feel like things would be way different.

I'm absolutely terrified at the way things are going in general, but the way things are going in Illinois generally worries me much, much less.
I just visited my sister and her fiancé in Chicago a little over a month ago. She moved there last year from where I currently live in Nebraska. The difference between there and here is wild. I felt so much more welcome in Chicago. People openly showed support for LGBTQ+ people everywhere I went. I would love to move there to be safer, but I don't want to abandon my community in Nebraska. I feel like I have to do my best to _try_ to get things to improve here. I also don't have the money to move, so it's probably not really anything to get my hopes up about. Also, the transportation there was amazing compared to Omaha. My sister showed me how to buy a pass on my phone to use the buses and trains. Everything went so smoothly and getting from one part of the city to the other was a breeze.

You can get a passport with your legal name with your old bc and your name change document. It's a slightly different form, but it doesn't take longer than a normal passport application or renewal.

100% - my wife did this. We had to bring her bc, her first marriage license (where she changed her name to her ex’s), her name change to something else, and then her change to my name. But yes, you totally can do that.
Indeed you can. They changed all of my info with my renewal, all I did was send a certified copy of the name/change order from the judge with it and fill out the form with my new information. Got the passport in about 5 weeks.
The luxury to leave is not available to most of us. A lot of us can't even afford to leave our red states.
Passports can do so much more than just allow you to leave: they can be used in place of almost any other ID (among other things). In fact, you should get the book & the plastic passport ID. If your state will not correct your gender or name, the Feds still will.
It's not about leaving. It's about having a federal id with the correct gender marker. State IDs are about to get real fraught-- see Florida's fraud bullshit.
The Rainbow Railroad is a LGBT refugee resettlement organization that helps those escaping dangerous situations. Mostly country to country moves, but they might also be able to direct people to smaller city or state organizations. Some cities are expanding their asylum programs to include state to state lgbt refugees. Some of these organizations focus on housing, employment as well as mental health. There is also an app called Inreach that can help locate services and assistance.
I’m scared there will be a mass exodus this November. I wish I could escape the U.S.
I’d imagine if trump wins, there will be a semi exodus of queer people as they move to the PNW, places like Seattle, portland, etc, as those states have made it staunchly clear that they will not support legislation that infringes upon LGBT people, which they also stated - and have done, with abortion access rights. So I’d imagine you’ll see a lot of lgbt people fleeing to Washington, Oregon, etc, if trump wins.

A lot of countries, even seemingly progressive countries, automatically disqualify you for immigration if you have a disability.
This isn’t completely true. The majority of these rules (at least in Western Europe) are about disabilities that make you completely unable to care for yourself. Yes that still rules out plenty of disabled folks but people with a diagnosis of something like ADHD or Autism are not immediately turned away. On top of that (in my experience in Europe) it’s not like they make you get a clear bill of health from a doctor, it’s mostly based on self reporting.
In New Zealand simply having an amputation or paraplegia neither or which keep you from caring for yourself, are automatically disqualifying factors.
That’s unfortunate for disabled people wanting to relocate to New Zealand. It seems like Australia and Canada have similar restrictions too. As I mentioned my experience in Europe (France specifically) has largely been based on whether you can financially support yourself. The negative counterpoint is that France does not classify a lot of things as a disability…. Side note, Sweden and Germany have specific rules prohibiting immigration discrimination based on disability.

probably it because it diverges from the point of my original reply. i’ve also never been in that situation so i wouldn’t know the alternatives, and i would much rather allow someone who actually has that experience to lead that aspect of the conversation rather than speaking over them and assuming i know their situation better than they would, which is adjacent to what the person i originally replied to has done.
The options boil down to: run any way you can or hide any way you can. Hide=go back in closet/go stealth if possible (stealth gets harder in red states with ID restrictions though hence passport urgency). Get a beard, take down flags, lie, don't come out if you haven't. Save living openly for when you can live in a safe area. Run=leave as best you can. Maybe that means no plan other than to drive when the danger is so immediate that there is no other option. Maybe it means finding a person in another state who can give you room and board (be careful of that bc some of those situations result in abusive situations that are hard to get out of). Obviously its best to leave with some amount of plans/money. Look for jobs with a relocation allowance, look for jobs out of state in general, crowdfund if you can safely do so. If anyone else knows of similar charities or nonprofits I would love to have more resources.

If Trump wins and things like Project 2025 become law, the state you live in will matter very little. There won't really be a thing such as blue states anymore. They talk about classifying "transgender ideology" as pornography in the Project 2025 plan, and outlawing all porn and putting "purveyors of porn", which in their view includes any propagation of pro trans or pro lgbtq views, in jail or made to register as sex offenders. This will be a federal law, so it won't matter what state you're in.
I know this is the plan, but will every region, to a man, enforce it? Recall how states decriminalized marijuana to little response despite it being federally illegal. Will a Republican led government become so effective as to end run the will of every last official?
That remains to be seen, but I think betting on the 'ineffectiveness' of literal fascists and the ability of state governments to protect their citizens from the Federal government with all its power and force is probably not wise.

The one caveat I would offer to this, as a nonbinary person, would be to STRONGLY caution AGAINST getting a passport with an X marker. Supplying the government with a record of having a gender variant identity is very dangerous

Relocating within the US to a state with trans protection laws is a good bet. I relocated to Illinois from Florida and it's honestly the second best decision I've ever made in my life.

I just happen to be going to college during the entirety of the next presidental term. The college is in Philadelphia, which is a "sanctuary" city in a decent state. And because I know how laws are passed (they need a majority in both Congress houses) we should be fine if either house has a Dem majority. The power to disband a department also needs a majority of Congress to approve. An Amendment needs ⅔ of both houses to be ratified. And of course the Supreme Court can deem anything unconditional. So even if Trump wins, keeping a majority in either Congress house should keep us safe.
SC just rules that the president can do anything in an “official” capacity and it’s not illegal, and he’s got free reign on pardons. Make no mistake, the far right politicians will dismantle anything they can to make America what they want it to be
I'm planning on leaving for Colorado if Trump wins. I'd already been planning on doing that after graduating college in Spring of 26. If Colorado is no longer safe, I plan on fleeing the US. As soon as it's announced if Trump wins, me and my partner are getting legally married (see below for why) My partner has Czech ancestry but doesn't qualify for citizenship because their grandfather was born in the US (literally 3 months after their great-grandfather immigrated from what was then Czechoslovakia) and the Czech Republic only goes back 2 generations with ancestral citizenship. They still have some living relatives of their great-grandfather to ask about potential family members to sponsor us for citizenship in the Czech Republic. I know it's not the best in Europe but it's my only option. If I'm stuck in the US I'll likely be thrown in jail and v-coded until I'm executed.

Enhanced IDs can be less expensive and will get you into both Canada and Mexico for those who can't afford passports and all. The enhanced IDs should get you far enough into said country and apply for asylum and other forms of refuge status. Canada is talking about making a streamlined service for trans individuals. If you can't afford to leave country there are safe house programs used along with programs in West Coast cities that helps support queer youth moving to said areas. Wishing the best for all of you

A passport should be fine but an Enhanced ID had multiple names sometimes ID plus stuff along those lines, usually available at your local DMV. I'm out by Seattle and they're roughly $60 but prices vary per state

Spain, but I am eligible for birthright citizenship and I’ve lived there for a few months out of the year In the Past. It’s also leaning right but it’s heavily dependent on the region and the Vox party has been floundering because their red pill policies are deeply unpopular. - If you don’t know whether you’re eligible for citizenship in another country, find out. Just go look it up. Today. (Use government websites preferably. Preferably NOT on websites that are trying to sell you their services.) If you need information you don’t have, get it. Bother your family. Contact official agencies. - If you are eligible for citizenship in another country but haven’t filed for it, DO THAT. NGL, this can be very slow. Wheels of bureaucracy etc. It might take more than six months. Don’t let that stop you. This is literally something it’ll be good to have for the rest of your life. - If you have citizenship in another country but not your passport from there, GET THAT. This paperwork will almost definitely require going through weird bureaucratic hoops (maybe they don’t do electronic forms and it’s all paper you have to request, maybe you need non-relatives or a lawyer/doctor/something to sign off that you are who you say you are, maybe you need ID photos in a very specific format different from anything the US uses, maybe the instructions are confusing, whatever). Just deal with all of it. Get it submitted. Pay the fees. Ask for help where necessary. Once it’s time to mail the whole stack of stuff off, PAY FOR THE EXPENSIVE VERIFIED EVERYTHING DELIVERY. Compared to a normal envelope it will cost a fortune. Pay it. I had to part temporarily with literally the ONLY document I had that demonstrated citizenship - the real thing, not a copy - to get a passport and I did not like doing that one bit. Worth doing? Yes. Worth mailing internationally with no insurance, no signature required, etc.? Feels like a bad plan. This doesn’t address pets, employment, housing, language, what to do with your stuff, or family arguing with you. I know. But get it done.

As a German myself, I can tell you that many of us were just as shocked. Even before the European elections there were numerous anti-fascist protests, which specifically spoke out about the AfD being a far-right party. I thought those protests would finally bring our people to their senses. It was devastating to see the results, and that's an understatement. Many of us don't want to "let that happen" at all costs. It's just that, at this point, the right-leaning voters are much more organized than the left-leaning ones. It's like I'm watching history repeat itself and I can't do a thing about it. Even holocaust survivors have held speeches to warn us, claiming that "this is how it started" back then. Germany is leaning far right for their standards, but they're still much better than many other countries in the EU. As an anecdote: some guy in germany was so far right that even the AFD (the german right-extremist party) said they wanted nothing to do with them. A few days later he got invited to do a speech for the FPÖ (the austrian equivalent of the AFD) and was viewed as an inspiration (As I'm from Austria I consider moving too btw). Germany is taking nazi stuff REALLY serious with their laws.
Spain and Portugal are great but you’ll want to have a job lined up before going because the job market is BAD, that or pursue an education in something like healthcare where demand is consistent.

As others have pointed out, the issues here are state governments not the federal. Conservatives in Congress don't, and will not have, the numbers to do anything about it on a national level. So it's a state level concern and even then the majority of the legislation is targeting trans kids who don't have the ability to move unfortunately

Come to Warsaw, Poland. I'm serious. It's a cosmopolitan capital city with good cuisine, public transport, accomodations, etc. The city mayor literally attended last month's pride parade. You've probably heard about the LGBTQ+-free zones legislation a few years back, but this was only in the rural, backwards regions + ended up getting torpedoed in no less than 6 months, which was surprisingly quick taking into account the fact there was a conservative president.
Correct me if im wrong but last time i spoke to my polish friend, he said there was literal homophobic ads on trains and busses. We dont even have that here in the US. Is that only happening in rural areas or something?

And move where? Straight up moving to Canada is nowhere near as easy as you may think. You have to be able to prove that you've got a career lined up and that you will provide a beneficial impact to the country by moving there. Saying you're afraid of the US will not get you very far at customs.

I say relocate to a blue state if you can... but I also encourage those who can to stay and be there to support those who are trapped. Think of all the lgbt+ minors and people who can't afford to leave. I live in a blue state but am disabled + poor so the idea of leaving the US is a pipe dream... plus the right exists everywhere, and what happens in the US WILL affect other countries. Obviously do what you can to keep you and your loved ones safe, but remember that the answer isn't always to flee. Sometimes it's to be there for those who can't. And fight and defend, in whatever ways we can.

This is the third post about this in as many days where the poster forgets that most of us live in poverty and there isn't enough money going around to support us leaving. A passport is meaningless if we can't afford to use it. We need to work on actual solutions or stand up and fight, because fleeing isn't an option for the majority of us.
Almost all anti-trans legislation under trump and biden has been at the state level. There is little trump can do without the support of congress for the same reason biden never does anything for us. Instead of talking about what probably won’t happen, we should be looking at what we can do for/as trans people in red states.

We all have ours in our family and they're good until 2030. I literally just checked my kid's to make sure. My kid wants to start transitioning and I am fucking terrified. I'm scared as a non binary person. Thankfully we live in Minnesota but who knows if suddenly the supreme court decides to overturn state law? I hate this with every fiber of my being. A few months? Wow, in the Netherlands I had my passport in one week. In the worst municipalities this once rose to 6 weeks and that was considered a violation as it is mandated to be 4 weeks! Processing the birth certificate is a matter of days officially but in my instance, after signing the papers the entire government system changed for me within **hours**.
Even if I could leave I have no idea where I’d go. I know Canada certainly isn’t too much better off than us right now, and the UK is really getting aggressive towards us right now too.

Also, if you are thinking about moving to another country....if you have any kind of disability, you will not be allowed to move there. Most countries see it as a "drain on the economy". Crutches and Spice has some good breakdowns of this.
Hi! Transmasc (adult) currently going thru the whole name change process/update. This is general advice/tips from my personal experience, always check what the rules are for your state/state you plan to move to, because that may change the order of which things should be done. What I've done that has made things simpler is getting name change first, social security second (where you can get your gender marker changed btw), and following through with the rest in order of "most important": driver's license, bank accounts, birth certificate, passport etc. Some of which can be done simultaneously. Tbh if you are able to travel to a state that has a simpler/less expensive name change process, do it. I did mine in Kentucky and I just had to have an in state mailing address (which was a PO box) and a few other docs, didn't need to provide proof of residence or anything. Plus, paid wayyyyy less than when I tried in IL (who didn't give me my money back after they denied it). ALSO!! Look into any LGBTQ+ orgs in your area/state that can help with things like documentation updates, relocation, etc. They can be really helpful! Good luck to everyone who is also in the process of using just starting! Creating community is what will ensure our survival.

I think you're talking about going into the closet for safety purposes (valid), but just in case: passport gender marker is self-ID. You do not need any supplementary documentation to change it. Nor does it need to match your other identification docs (just don't try to present conflicting docs at the same time).
This is not merely about leaving the country. It's about having an ID with an accurate name and gender marker too. States are going to do everything they can to prevent this.
I have all my docs in order, not by luck either. I was born in a red state, so I'm slightly concerned they with change my gender marker back at some point in the future, so I figure I need to keep my correct birth cert safe in case I ever need it.

Have an updated passport yes, have all your documents updated. Not because you’ll be leaving but because you might not be able to update them for a while. Get your surgeries scheduled, start hrt if you haven’t, DO EVERYTHING YOU HAVENT YET DONE. Remember that you can self select your gender marker on your passport AND social security card as of right now!! Even if you don’t plan to leave the country, please get it if you’ve transitioned so you can have your identity documents in order for employment etc :)

I have an appointment with the library this week. BTW, if you're low income, you can get your passport for free or discounted. Also also you don't need your gender to match between documents. For example, my driver's license has the M marker and my birth certificate has the F marker.
I work remotely in Virginia for an organization that is in Pennsylvania. Luckily, my wife and I have the resources, and we'd probably up and move to PA if any hint of bad federal legislation/action came to be. Then we'd make plans to leave the US. However, it's pretty hard to uproot kids. If we didn't have kids, I feel like things would be way different. We have our passports ready to go.
