He was an innocent nerd with a fancy degree who still wasn't as skilled as Walter(to sho how amazing he is) they had to kill him so Walter would be the only meth chef
It's not so much that as how dark the overall story is. I kept watching it hoping things would work out for Walt and Jesse, but it just keeps getting worse.

Ah, shit, now I remember. That show was great but I don't think I can bring myself to ever re-watch it given how many dark twists there were.
I am rewatching it now and I advise you too if you wantched it 4-5 years ago. It's amazing how you interpret it differently as you get older.
