Joseph in the book is just kinda an old guy that doesnt care ablut anyome and just is an asshole to everything Mrs earnshadw basically doesnt exist

Heisuke780

So what the relevance of old woman yuri here? Her love let her see the ghosts which let Cathy confirm her suspicions?

Content-Indication99

It is probably not a case of old woman yuri. It is most likely how PM transferred the originals religious aspect into this versions. As Josephine is obsessed with the river flowing beneath the manor. Her ultimate goal is to drink of the rivers water. She believes the only way to do this is to protect the manor to the best of her ability which involves listening to the dead ghost of Mrs, Earnshaw. Essentially the "river" is the after life Josephine seeks, which she believes can only be achieved by following the spirit (holy spirit) of Mrs. Earnshaw.

Heisuke780

Stand proud, you convinced me

SmoothPlastic9

Mrs earnshaw having any sort of relevancy is pretty much a limbus only thing so ig she just promised josephine part of the river?

hellatzian

she drink a water from river inside the manor who give crazy effect.

emk576

old woman yuri

Heisuke780

That's it? She was in the cuck chair?

emk576

book!joseph was incredibly religious and hated almost everything and everyone. he's near incomprehensible because of his heavy yorkshire dialect but that's about it edit: now that i think about it, the religious aspect of his character probably translated into josephine being able to hear mrs earnshaw's voice in the game

viviannesayswhat

I tried. I REALLY TRIED to read his lines in the book. Multiple readings and even slowly saying them out loud. I just gave up and skipped over the rest of them if I couldn't get it at one glance after. Holy crap, it's THAT bad. I am so glad they ditched that in game.

iburntdownthehouse

It would be super funny if they played it completely straight, and everyone talked to her like she's perfectly understandable.

Heisuke780

I see. In the book was he also obsessed with her?

InfiniteBoysenberry7

I read it just after Canto V and, except if my memory is falling apart, Joseph never really talked about her. She is not even an important character, nor someone you really see in the book.

emk576

as far as i remember, no. mrs earnshaw dies very early in the book (2 years after mr earnshaw brings heathcliff in) and i don't think joseph even mentions her

MightyHunter09

My good man, this is the Cuck Canto.

Kamakaziturtle

The story only touches on it, but doesn't go into detail exactly what was happening, but the river under the manor was resulting in ghosts being present in the manor. Something that Cathy could also see and scared her as a child. Supposedly, Josephine seemed to not only be able to hear her ghost but may have even been getting some direct orders from her (or later, possibly Cathy as her consciousness seemed to become one with the manor as well) We don't have any background on why shes so obsessive over Earnshaw specifically, one can assume she might have been the person Josephine truly respected or something and continued to follow her after her death. That or maybe just after getting haunted she started to grow obsessive.

Heisuke780

Do you think the river will be touched upon again?

Kamakaziturtle

Probably, it seemed like it was getting teased to set up for later. If it’s the same river that is referred to by Lobotomy Corp it could be a pretty big deal.

Heisuke780

Oh shoot

Narvallius

Definitely, but Heath's second chapter is many years away. Though it's very integral to the lore in general, so it might be explained/play a direct role way before that.

-MouseTasche-

She wants that Earnshaw sacred water if you know what I mean?

Heisuke780

How you got a mersault pfp but I have to get you our of the kitchen?

MisterLestrade

We don’t know the exact mechanism behind who exactly appears as a ghost for a person. It was Mrs. Earnshaw for Josephine, and every other Cathy for Cathy. It’s possible that, when Josephine began serving as a Butler, Mrs. Earnshaw was the first of the house’s owners to die during her service, so she ended up becoming the face of the underground river for her.

SirTonberryy

No the ghost was Mrs Earnshaw for both Josephine and Cathy. Cathy met every Cathy only after getting the mirror

MisterLestrade

Didn’t Cathy only start seeing ghosts after getting the mirror?

Abject-Perception954

She saw these ghosts already as a child

PPunktA

honestly the only thing I remember from Joseph in the book is that he was almost incomprehensible but neither the story nor the characters seemed to notice

GHitoshura

The character from the book was basically a religious weirdo who was a prick to everyone so they translated that to the character in the game talking about Mrs Earnshaw in the same way a old and crazy diehard religious person would talk about a religious figure or idol. Also it is heavily implied that she has been able to see the ghost of Mrs Earnshaw for years so that adds to her being clearly mentally unstable

Victacobell

A mixture of butler contracts and being able to see the "ghost" of Mrs Earnshaw.
