galactic_observer

Dikos means "cough" in both Navajo and Western Apache. El tosito.

Traditional_Exam4561

Nobody expects the Monty Python reference!

TerryJerryMaryHarry

I FUCKING HATE IT, WHEN I WAS LEARNING SCOTS GAELIC IT STARTED WITH BIG AND SMALL. SMALL IS BEAG AND BIG IS MHÓR

DenTheRedditBoi77

Also good is math that's like the opposite of my experience >!Also it's mòr/mhòr, Scottish accents go to the left!<

TerryJerryMaryHarry

Shit, your right, I speak Spanish, and I've been reading older texts which means ó is more common, normally I just ignore accents, but Gaelic purists get pissy about it

marbhgancaife

>normally I just ignore accents, but Gaelic purists get pissy about it Because it can completely change the meaning of a word! The examples below are in Irish, but it's similiar in Scottish Gàidhlig. Mála means bag. Mala means eyebrow. Éire means Ireland. Eire means burden. Cáca means cake. Caca means.....💩

TerryJerryMaryHarry

Oh I know it changes the meaning of the word, it does the same in Spanish and Romanian (mamá = mom mama = breast) but I find that without my keyboard set to Gàidhlig it's a hell of a lot more effort to have to get every accent than to just explain an accent mistake. Also as a side note, mattering on the scot you ask Éire and Eire are the same things

RaspberryPiBen

Maybe try WinCompose if you're on Windows? With that, you tap the Compose key, then e, then ` to make è, and you can do similarly for all sorts of special characters. If you're on Linux, the compose key is built in, and it should be in your DE's settings (or there's a command if you're using a WM). On MacOS, I'm pretty sure you can long-press a key to show variations on it.

TerryJerryMaryHarry

I'm on mobile, I have to long press a key for a good 2 seconds and then navigate to the right accent, which if I only spoke English and Scottish Gaelic i could just set it to the preferred accent, but I also speak Spanish and Romanian.

dubovinius

So that's where Irish *beag* and Welsh *bach* come from. When I lived in Wales they had an ale called Butty Bach, basically ‘little friend’ with ‘butty’ being a Welsh English form of ‘buddy’ (which I found funny because to me a ‘butty’ is a type of sandwich you put chips in). Highly recommend that anyone visiting Wales should give it a go.

thewaltenicfiles

This looks like some shit that albanian would do

etymology is basically random humor

Low_Cartographer2944

Always makes me laugh in modern Irish, beag means small.

BananaDerp64

At least mór is easy to understand

skkkkkt

Is it related to the Latin pico which means small

door_-

"Bigos" is also a polish dish, the cabbage stew.

Mjerc12

[Bigos?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigos)

xX-El-Jefe-Xx

I assume that and words like "poco" go back to a PIE root

Kyr1500

That’s where they got the name for the phone brand I guess

Easy in Finish is helppo, difficult is vaikea. The one that you would need helppo with is not called helppo \^\^
