So part of the reason that there are surcharges for odd sze parcel is that the don't/can't run through the same sortation lines as the regular size parcel. So there a separate area where you will find all types of irregular size packages that require human action piece by piece. I believe the dims and weights are still calculated via automation but is been awhile since I was in a sortation center.

Ah that makes sense, their conveyance probably wasn’t designed to handle the big and bulky items. This client of mine has like medium size furniture boxes where 1 person can handle it. I feel like I can just hire a human to do this.

I’d sell it to them as it helps ensure proper billing from the 1st invoice versus having to correct it later on (either in favor of customer or you)

The former driver on my route went on medical leave and when he returned, he was placed on light duty. They had him just walking around the facility with a tape measurer, checking dimensions all day. This was UPS.

That’s crazy. Here I thought they were automated everywhere

This response is insane and inaccurate unless they live 300 miles out in the middle of nowhere. UPS has dim scanners on the belts that every shipment goes through after it's unloaded. This was true when I started there 20 years ago and has only gotten more advanced as they add surcharges for bad and oversize dims.

Hey! I get the issue. UPS and FedEx likely use dimensioners and scales to correct package info on the fly. To keep things smooth and accurate, investing in a dimensioner and scale for your warehouse might be a smart move. It'll save you a lot of hassle and make sure you have the right dims for your deliveries.
