Rightmove has options for searching via distance. Set the hospital as your central point and search a distance you’re happy to walk/bus etc, then set your price range accordingly.
Thank you so much!
I’ll search for options there
Also just wanted to confirm, I calculated my tube fare correctly right?
3.7£ x 2 from Tooting to Borough and back.
>But the tube travel from Tooting to Borough would cost me around 8£(3.7£ one way) everyday so it might not be worth it after all.
This is a normal, even low, cost for commuting in London.
You have a job in zone 1.
If you don't like this cost you can potentially walk or cycle for free (depending on distance and motivation) or take a bus (likely slower and much less comfortable) for £1.75 in each direction.
Or you just need to accept that tube/rail fares are what they are and build that into your budget.
So would you recommend staying near central London itself paying extra on rent
Or travelling from other cheaper areas of London to the centre, spending more money on travel
That depends on your preferences. Do you prefer having a bit more space but a longer commute, or small box room centrally but having more of your day to yourself?
So...
- Living within walking distance would severely limit you in choice
- If you like cycling that gives a much wider area but isn't for everyone
- Personally, I would accept that the cost of tube journeys to and from zone 1 are an unavoidable cost of life, budget for them, and search for housing with the starting assumption that I'll need to pay for it.
However, I'd still be looking for somewhere with a fairly smooth/direct route to work. Good news for you is that London Bridge station has tons of options - two tube lines, Thameslink and various regional trains.
When i worked at Guy’s i lived in Surrey Quays/Deptford and it was a quick journey on jubilee line (it does get super busy tho…) and there are buses too.
I live in Tooting Broadway and work in Farringdon.
I get the Northern line to Elephant and Castle and walk from there. As E&C is in Zone 2 it only costs £4.20 each day, saving me around £60 a month.
The walk takes me 40 minutes but as I’m sat down at a desk for most of the day I don’t mind. From E&C to Guy’s Cancer Centre is only about a 20 minute walk.
Big up tooting!
How often do you go in a week? Do you ever go at off peak times? If you’re 30 or under you could get a railcard which reduces off peak fares by 1/3 which could make things cheaper for you.
I expect that the cost of rent closer to the centre will dwarf transport costs.
Yes it’s different. You can attach your rail card to your oyster by asking a member of staff in the station.
But if you are going peak times it won’t save you anything.
The avg cost of your commute is IMHO not nearly as important as other factors. Like seriously if say, you save 2gbp a day to live somewhere why would you choose to do that when you might be having a truly miserable existence in a shit hole or ofc better yet pay 500 more in rent. Not sure why you're even counting pennies on your journey. Focus on other factors first and foremost!

I think they’d rather you find it out and calculate it for them

Amazing! I get the perspective now. Thank you so much man
You could get a bicycle. You've got a (kind of) cycle path all the way from Tooting to Borough in CS7.

Not much cheaper though, £3.40

I’ll travel 5 times a week around peak hours only. Thanks for the rail card tip! Is it different from the Oyster card though?

Not about accom, but may I ask what you do/how you got the job? I’m a biomed graduate who’s feeling a little lost lol. Thanks
Hey mate! I’m a doctor and will be working in the Medical Oncology dept. I got the job via the NHS trac job website. Good luck:)
Wow that’s amazing!! Good luck at your new job 👏🙏
