Itā€™s not the northern lights as the activity at 11:30 wasnā€™t strong enough to be seen this far south

CressCrowbits

I've lived in Finland for 5 years and even been to lapland, and have never seen the northern lights. You lot back home aren't allowed to see them before me.

c_dug

Guess you missed the news last month!

labdweller

Too late for that

Next-Project-1450

You couldn't have been looking properly šŸ˜ Last month they were visible over the entire UK and parts of Europe (as far south as Germany and the Czech Republic). They **must** have been visible in Finland when that happened. I got a photo of them, but one of my students and his friends were in a park, and were actually scared because they didn't know what it was (when I saw **his** photo I was well pissed, because it was dramatic compared to mine - which was good enough).

CressCrowbits

La la I can't hear you

Next-Project-1450

šŸ¤£ When I asked my sister if she'd seen the lights, her reply was 'No I fucking didn't. I went to bed at 9 o'clock'. She was furious she missed them. Thing was, spectacular as they were, they were **MUCH** better when seen via a photograph. I'd post mine if it was allowed on this sub, just to wind you up some more šŸ˜‹

Kent_Doggy_Geezer

Noctoluminescent clouds, about 80km high. This is very unusual for this time of year and solar cycle, scientists think it is because of the vast amounts of water vapour that shot up into the high stratosphere from the volcano in Tonga, in January 2022 that erupted and it will take years for the water to move back down into the atmosphere. It was the biggest eruption for the last century, almost certainly the largest since Krakatoa in 1883, and the ash plume itself shot upward 57km high, and then the water vapour moved higher with the winds up there. This plume was the highest ever recorded from a satellite. It was an underwater eruption as well so the force involved is incalculable. It was heard thousands of miles away, look it up, there are many videos online about it.

brevitycloud

Aren't clouds water vapour? whys it doing this delightful glowing business rather than being a cumulonimbus?

Kent_Doggy_Geezer

They are reflecting the sun, because they are so high up they get sunlight long after sunset and before sunrise. Thatā€™s why they are reflecting! Fascinating right?

rsbanham

They are the highest clouds in Earth's atmosphere, located in the mesosphere at altitudes of around 76 to 85 km (249,000 to 279,000 ft).

saywhatlondon

As many said could be Noctilucent Clouds but also the definition of these clouds are that are part of the mesosphere at 75-85km up in the sky. Now I donā€™t want to be argumentative but those clouds they seems very low to me to be classified as Noctilucent Clouds. As from the photo seems like there is quite a big part of sky above those clouds. Even if we are taking in the perspective, and the fact that could be far away to see something that is far away according to some math equations that cloud should be roughly 500miles away from that location R_{cloud}} = R + h = 6371 + 85 = 6456 km D^2 + R^2 = (R + h)^2 D^2 + 6371^2 = 6456^2 D^2 + 40589641 = 41637136 D^2 = 1047495 D = \sqrt{1047495} \approx 1024.5 km Now after this said, I doubt that those are the Noctilucent Clouds. Please if someone as a different and more informed opinion please share some light on it :-))

v1brates

Yep, they are probably about 500 miles away. [More photos.](https://www.google.com.au/search?sca_esv=32906d65dcce0253&sxsrf=ADLYWIJQzjae5oEUErwqAlu6woACcd3j9w:1719617840991&q=Noctilucent+Clouds&udm=2&fbs=AEQNm0COtQ6qE5snXClm_cWqGTLX_jMP5V4l2v9LemFtanifXVoSDc4z6nO25TAUUgCi_PqCbebMxH2l70BIpVN1tqaotXuhxLKSz0A7jFus2NRBE1IzXbKlu4T6U4i0S56MHfKseo1LkFYlRacP3ANIt81UHHz_xmAfwY47cvJIyr8IDpHSNdh5YyClmG0uHzxOx4K9hegDLLwym00ZuHOE4WKtb1FDJw&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj_8b7Uu_-GAxXM3TgGHTauDM0QtKgLegQICxAB&biw=1391&bih=833&dpr=2)

saywhatlondon

From the link you attach is always assumed that the observer is on the ground so the subject is looking up. In the case of this photo the OP is high above ground. Most of cases also we arenā€™t even considering light pollution. I mean is such a complex argument anyway :-) all good, just so food for thoughts.

v1brates

https://cosmosmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/180220-Noctilucent-Full-scaled.jpg https://petapixel.com/assets/uploads/2022/08/northernlightsandclouds.jpg Both taken from an elevated position.

saywhatlondon

The petapixel link looks to me more like aurora also the picture is taken from ground and up. Cosmo magazine is literally photoshopped so hard and harsh they should get a better photographer team lol. OK I rest my case, whatever it is it, it is, I will go away with my doubts and logic and leave it :-) great pics by the way :-))

v1brates

Petapixel shows Noctilucent clouds on the horizon. Also its taken from an elevated position on top of a hill.

logfirechocolates

Iā€™m not arguing with your maths but I read this from Royal Museums Greenwich ā€œRecently however, in the Northern Hemisphere noctilucent clouds have been seen at much lower latitudes than expected. Scientists believe this is a result of climate change, but it could also be due to other factors, such as rocket launches expelling particles into the atmosphere which go on to form noctilucent clouds.ā€

saywhatlondon

Thanks for this quote. I think nowadays everything is ā€œclimate changeā€ lol to bring down to lower stratosphere clouds that should form at 85km at -120cā€¦ this means our stratosphere is colder :-) sometimes ā€œscientistsā€ they should think twice before they speak, like everyone of us, again I am mister nobody just trying to put some logic into the thought process and lucky that in 2024 we can check out info put out from the scientific community and compare it. The rocket theory, they mean planes? Commercial aircraft pollutionā€¦. Or rocket launches like space rocket. :-) anyway I will rest my curiosity and leave it to : it is a pretty picture thanks for sharing OP

Adorable_Break8869

climate change isnā€™t just global heating, those scientists are referring to increased methane emissions producing additional water vapour, which reinforces these types of clouds

saywhatlondon

I see, ok fair enough! I will read into this even from initial reading on https://climate.mit.edu/ask-mit/why-do-we-blame-climate-change-carbon-dioxide-when-water-vapor-much-more-common-greenhouse Quite interesting, Quote : This process is so rapid that, on average, a molecule of water resides in the atmosphere for only about two weeks This means extra water we put into the atmosphere simply doesnā€™t stick around long enough to alter the climate; you donā€™t have to worry about warming the Earth every time you boil a kettle. And thereā€™s really no amount of water vapor we could emit that would change this Anyway this is MIT maybe someone else has different thoughts :-)

Adorable_Break8869

again, climate change isnā€™t just global heating. the addition of water vapour from climate change and how it affects those clouds isnā€™t about temperature

SignificanceOld1751

I mean they certainly LOOK like PMCs. As in completely and utterly textbook, and there have been multiple sightings recently that look completely identical to this. Can you explain the maths a bit more? Where did 6371 come from? And what does them being 1000km from the point of viewing have to do with their height in the atmosphere?

saywhatlondon

I have assumed that the Earth is a perfect sphere instead of being a Geoid, in order to make the math a bit simpler. Radius of the Earth (R): 6371 km Height of the cloud above the surface (h): 85 km Well if those clouds are 1024km away (640miles) this means that we have more of a clear sky, that is actually visible by the line of sight principle that counts in light reverberation and Earth curvature, that means that cloud in line of sight is actually above Dresden,Germany (assuming this photo is taken looking at pure east). Using the principle of RF that OP photo is roughly 50mt above sea level so longest line of sight achievable is 15.6 miles as per Earth curvature. I am just trying to make some sense, since we are not taking a picture from the ground up which means we can see anything above us and that would make it difficult to argue from just a photo. Sorry to be pedantic about this, I should have left to the fact is a great photo lol but now I got down the rabbit hole. Please if someone in here is more into this explain and I would love to hear more on how this is possible:-))

SignificanceOld1751

Ahh I see, I get it now, thank you! But that's a Polar Mesospheric Cloud. It just is.

King_Chad_The_69th

Noctilucent clouds are the highest clouds that naturally form in our atmosphere, and they form from ice crystals left over from micrometeorites burning up in the atmosphere or volcanic dust.
