Can't wait to read the FB comments underneath the newsday/news12 articles on this one. /s

JohanMcdougal

"She's probably MS13 anyway!!!"

andthendirksaid

15 minimum. They've been getting worse.

ClassWarAndPuppies

# THE COUNTRY IS AMERICA WE SPEAK AMERICAN HERE DONT LIKE IT SORRY GO BACK TO YOUR GANG IN HONDURADOR OR WHATEVER Something like that, I bet.

RatInaMaze

This is being screamed from a Dodge RAM

larryb78

the higher you lift the louder you must shout

larryb78

what is the over/under on anecdotes about people's grandparents coming to this country and learning the language?

perfect_fifths

Now imagine what would happen if the person was non verbal, deaf, or unable to comply with instructions because of a disability. People need to more sensitive to others as a whole regardless of disability, inability to understand English etc.

perfect_fifths

I understand! Im disabled and used to work with disabled adults with Alzheimer’s an dementia and can’t even imagine how police would react to someone hallucinating and agitated due to it

ThisIsJay

Exactly. People really just need to be more kind all-around. People suck.

larryb78

on this island they'd likely get better treatment because, well, they're not spanish speaking

perfect_fifths

https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/man-taser-police-death-long-island-emotionally-disturbed-hospital/1981871/ https://projects.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk-pd-simmons-mcdonnell/ (Two men who had mental impairments died while in custody and it was covered up) It happens here.

Fitz_2112

Long Island cops being racist assholes? Tell me it ain't so!!!

hbomberman

There's no excuse for this bigotry, incompetence, and unlawfulness from our well-funded police.

cricket9818

Many factors, but one of the biggest is the selfish mindset of “just do what’s easiest for me no matter the expense to you”

carriegood

And the last person who should have that mindset is a police officer.

Pikathew

I feel like nassau cops are cops because of the pay and, more than likely, nepotism and not because they actually want to be useful/helpful to their community

yourfavoritenoone

[This article](https://abc7ny.com/officers-arrested-nassau-county-drugs-drug-conspiracy/3627821/) came to mind with your comment.

Pikathew

Wow, model citizens huh?

meowmeowmelons

Imagine being a tourist who can’t speak English and someone has a medical emergency. At least at our overpriced hospitals they bother to pay for a system.

ThunkAsDrinklePeep

It's basically a con to maintain power structures within one's own rave by making other working class the bad guys.

Conjoined_Twin

I grew up during the 1960's in Brentwood. Every class I attended, until I graduated, was diverse. And what it showed me was that we are all human, regardless of our differences. Did I feel uncomfortable with those differences? At times yes. But that was on me. I'm sure some of them felt the same way. But you learn. I prefer accepting as opposed to rejecting. It makes life more enjoyable.

perfect_fifths

Yeah same. I don’t get it. America was founded by refugees (albeit white) who did nothing but incite violence initially and took away land from people who were here first as well as giving them diseases. And America has no official language.

CaptainKoconut

Anything other than straight white familes terrifies people out here. When we bought our house out here in our lily-white neighborhood, several of the neighbors came up to me to say stuff along the lines of "we're glad YOU bought it, we saw lots of 'those' people looking at the house. We looked at a bigger house in a different neighborhood recently, and one of the neighbors was talking about how a house down the street received a higher offer from a family named "Singh" but wanted to go with the lower offer so the "neighborhood didn't change"

How do you know they are here illegally? If they are not they still deserve fair treatment.

spk92986

Just come out and tell everyone here you're racist, you're not exactly sugarcoating it.

formermq

The country doesn't have a national language for a reason dipshit. It's because people who built this country spoke all sorts of languages and the reason they decided not to make one language primary is so that big government wouldn't tell people what to do and how to talk. So not only do you want the government to tell people what language they have to speak but I'm sure your not complaining about paying less than you would for some illegals to put a new fucking roof on your house or to mow your lawn every week. I'm sure you draw the line right at "I only give a fuck about myself". Go vote for Santos again. Oh wait, he speaks fucking Portuguese because he's really from Brazil. You're as shallow as the grave you deserve.

nefarious_epicure

Seriously the only thing that surprised me here was that Suffolk wasn't sued first.

hbomberman

It was. The article mentions that they previously won a similar suit against Suffolk.

nefarious_epicure

Ha! That’s what I get for skimming rapidly.

hjablowme919

No surprises here. I’ve heard a number of stories about Nassau cops doing this and worse, will mock the accents of people who don’t speak English. The other non-surprise is cops not taking a complaint against other cops.

TheHatedMilkMachine

Someone tell the Nassau Idiot Cops we speak Algonquin here

lawanddisorder

Hey remember this? [Out of 144 civilian complaints, Nassau Police claim zero have any merit.](https://gothamist.com/news/a-screaming-red-flag-out-of-144-civilian-complaints-nassau-police-claim-zero-have-any-merit) NCPD is out-of-control and answerable to no one and it is costing taxpayers tens of millions annually in settlements of police misconduct lawsuits.

larryb78

you can bet when they do find one that's credible the officer will be a minority

lundqvist_saves

The Long Island mentality strikes again.

PandaMuffin1

NCPD investigates itself and NEVER finds any wrong doing. They do however pay out a lot of money in settlements... https://gothamist.com/news/a-screaming-red-flag-out-of-144-civilian-complaints-nassau-police-claim-zero-have-any-merit

larryb78

easier to play with the house's money than admit you fucked up

nygdan

"Protect and serve"

f_moss3

Pretty sure most of NCPD barely passed the English Regents themselves

lateral_moves

It sucks because I've had a few interactions with Nassau Police and half the time I got really supportive and great officers and the other half I got caricatures and bullies. The good ones are hurt as much if not more by the asshats.

PandaMuffin1

One bad apple spoils the whole bunch though.

larryb78

bingo - there's one specific car that works our neighborhood that when they show up everyone's like ah fuck, the rest have all been cool

f_moss3

The good ones aren’t being hurt, nor are they “good ones.” They’re standing by while their buddies, the bad ones, do whatever they want.

1nth3c1ty

LI police being incompetent and racist? I'm so shocked

Mamiknowsbest16

The US does not have a national language ! We are a language or many !

Slyde01

Well, THAT cop is about to have a very bad day.....

djstevefog

Yeah poor guy's gonna get a promotion

sonofsqueegee

Contrary to China or Japan (your examples), this country was made up of immigrants, who spoke different languages - English, Dutch,German, French, Spanish... so, yeah, we should cater to all languages as possible to continue the country's tradition. If your argument were to hold true, then we all must learn some kind of Native American language and take it from there.

heyitsxio

> If any of us moved to China or Japan or any other country with a foreign language , do you think they have to cater to you? No, most signs, street postings, restaurant names ,etc are all in that country's native language. Have you ever traveled to a country where English is not the primary language? There are *so many* concessions made for English speakers in so many countries.

gravityhashira61

Not really, and I've been to places like Japan, France etc. In France actually if you don't speak French they look down upon you as the French generally hate Americans. Had to try to translate almost everything.

lincolnfalcon

I’ve never had an issue speaking English in France. Sounds like people just don’t like you.

ProfShea

This is insane.... Over in r/paris there are many complaints about law enforcement not speaking English and having to use Embassy/Consular services. Complain all day long about whatever aspect of life in America you want. But, it's certainly not the case that ALL of the French or Japanese police force speaks English.... cmon...

nefarious_epicure

Have been to France. Parisians can be difficult. Everywhere else, not so much, though the actual availability varied. We hit a little bit of "please stop mangling our beautiful language s'il vous plait" (my husband's French is very good as he lived there for a year, but he has a very obvious British accent)

LiveLaughLithium

If you weren’t so ignorant and actually traveled… you’d see that there are multiple languages all over the world posted… ya know, to help people. Which the police should be doing. Humans aren’t illegal. America is LITERALLY for immigrants, so many of the Italians and irish long islanders seem to forget that….

gravityhashira61

Actually, people can be illegal, it's stipulated that if you come into this country w/o going through the proper process then yes, you are here illegally and breaking American law. If I travel to China or North korea without a proper Visa i will likely be detained and jailed. the Italians and Irish who came here back in the 20's all went through Ellis island, and you know what? Many were turned back because they came here with TB or other diseases and if you were deemed too sick or too old to work and contribute to society, you were sent back. What types of systems now do we have in place to do that? None. just letting anyone come in as they please with no deterrents in place.

PandaMuffin1

> What types of systems now do we have in place to do that? None. > just letting anyone come in as they please with no deterrents in place. That is simply not true.

Behaviors such as vulgar language, comment spam, or extremely NSFW language or material to earn sharp emotional responses will earn bans. If you disagree with someone, don't try to bait them into behavior that they would regret. If you think you are the victim of flaming or baiting, report the behavior instead of responding.

petruchi41

So you’re recommending that the United States base its immigration policy on North Korea’s?

gravityhashira61

No, but it should be much more stringent than it is now, and we need to be more selective of the people we let in here. We are getting full.

minnieboss

Original language of Long Island is Algonquin. Your bigoted ass is the one who shouldn't be here.

>The video does not show how the conversation is resolved. Not that I think it would be interesting, but it's weird that the video doesn't show how the conversation actually concluded.

WinterAd9039

Preference should be given in hiring to officers who speak Spanish or another language.

[deleted]

Further you go in LI less welcome you feel if you are few shades darker, speak other than English language, dressed differently
