If you have a very spacious one bed apartment for $2300 it is “cheap” apartment. I say “cheap” because I am also not from New York originally and know this is a lot of money, but it is below market rate. When you pay below market rate, you’re going to have to compromise. So to gain the space you’ve inherited the noise - is it worth it? Hopefully the landlord will resolve the fridge issue - so you need to decide if you can live with noise and can your parents manage there? If your parents want to stay with you in New York, they need to understand now that isn’t the suburbs, it’s a different experience. It isn’t quiet, it isn’t cheap. They can’t expect the same situation and environment as the suburbs. You need to make that clear now before they come, because you can’t expect your neighbours to accommodate your parents bed time for example. If they can’t cope with that you all need a new plan, and perhaps you need to rethink a new situation elsewhere.

Thank you. Yes I will have to work on that. My parents are not very much exposed to the US or NYC so for them asking me to rent a "bigger space" was something so easy. I wish I had been more considerate of the situation. Lessons learned.

Damn, if my parents asked that I’d tell them they can fuck right off. Consider yourself lucky you found a 1br for that little money, if what you mentioned are your only issues then you found a steal of an apartment. I’m paying almost double that for a 1br in court square.

Earplugs for half the year when the radiator is on, and a solid plug-in induction stovetop. Or pay literally double your rent for new construction (warning: stove will be weak and the AC will likely be louder than your radiator.

Any apartment in NYC is going to have noise issues. Car noise. Radiator noise. People all around noise. I'd suggest finding ways to deal with it via ear plugs and/or a white noise machine. The radiator noise will only be for half the year. The fridge not working sucks, but if management is already working on replacing it then it's a temporary issue. I can't speak to the stove issue. I'm not sure what you mean by "it works like an electric". You're not going to find a gas stove that puts out enough heat for a wok if that's what you're looking for. They make stove attachments to help though. Honestly you have a great deal and breaking a lease is expensive. Is it possible you're just feeling overwhelmed from all the changes? The first few weeks can be stressful, so I'd avoid making any rash decisions until you've honestly tried to settle in.

I definitely feel very overwhelmed especially that i didn't want to move in the first place and my family kind of pressured me. So about the stove, it takes quite a long time to heat up. I understand that some people might find it okay but it would be challenging for my parents. Their cooking style is mostly stir frying so the heat could be difficult.

>Any apartment in NYC is going to have noise issues. This is not true though - my apartment is quiet

Luxury buildings in the area charge twice that rate for a 1 bedroom. Id say, just invest in earplugs, you can get 100 pairs for $18 on amazon. The radiators can be horrible because they are not serviced enough, but there wont be any radiator on 2 weeks from now when the warm weather comes back. I would hold out until october and save up some $$.

You can def sublet it but I would consider that a plan B. I would think and hope you could mitigate the noise at night which I think is ur biggest issue. Have you ever tried a white noise machine or fan? I use one at night and have for a decade to drown out noise from outside. Sounds like the fridge is being handled. I would also bring the stove to their attention. Assume you are taking about stove top not getting hot enough. There has to be a way to allow more flame to flow out. I would rly try to make this work first and after a month it isn’t working then hell you gave it a shot. Even if you sublease at a lost at 2200 that’s still better than breaking it entirely imo. Have a question though. Are the owners non corporate? Like are you leasing for a family? If so, they could be understanding and you could work out say you just stay fro 3 months.

EquipmentHappy8226

They are corporate owners. I am the only one on the lease since my families are overseas. However I have explained to them during renting that my parents will be visiting for 3 months at least every year. Yes I am willing to sublease it as a loss. I am willing to sublease for 2100 or even 2000.

So I would see sublet as a plan B. Good luck, i do think people are capable of adapting but if you suffer from a medical disorder like insomnia then well that’s another story.

Whocanmakemostmoney

So you want to downgrade yourself from 1 br to a studio with your parents living together? Where can you find another 1 big br apartment in LIC for that price and pay extra broker fee to move to a other apartment? If you think you can fund a better one, then move. Or else you have a great deal and you have to work with what you have.

matielmigite

For radiator noise, if it’s the banging, you can shim something underneath the side away from the pipe so that it actually drains. There are YouTube tutorials on how to reduce the noise. It will never be silent but the really loud banging can be fixed.

yourdoglovesme

DM me. Sounds like something I’m looking for! :)

EquipmentHappy8226

It is close to court square so good location as well.

hulks_brother

Try to sublet it. It shouldn't be that hard. There are all kinds of people trying to get into the court square area.

Its sad that in asian culture as an adult you are never able to really get your parrents off your back and be a free human experience life on your own terms...Im glad as an american my mother doesn't expect me to take care of her. Thank god every day that I dont need to waste energy trying to accommodate someone who expects to be accommodated because that's what is killing you And if all you can afford is a 2000 dollar apartment in long island city why are you breaking yourself? You are not ready to take care of someone else unless you can afford the good life.. Ticking radiator sound is not the high life. Find a better apartment for yourself and live. Be american. Welcome to america, lol

CapitalDream

Radiator can be fixed by LL handyman and shouldn't cost them much at all. worst case they replace the bleed valve. Had this done to my old units a few times and the landlord never complained.
