Id keep that grain in confinement for the rest of its days/ put it in a glass display jar next to all the bags of rice/ricecooker, and let the rice ponder about the life it could have had, the people it could have fed, the lives it could have saved. An eternal prison, but with the view of everything it could have been… maybe sticky rice? Perhaps a Rice Krispy Treat? But it shall never get the satisfaction of getting to know, and next time the rice will stay away from the Mac
If any of your devices get water damage, the grain of rice should be eligible for parole in lieu of its upcoming community service duty (drying the device with rice, mandatory all hands on deck for ricefolk)
I see a lot of people come into my work for “colorful lines on blank screen” almost every time without fail they have a privacy cover over their camera and it cracked the screen
Staples and paper clips too. I work IT for a school district, 1/4 of our 200 MacBooks need to be repaired this summer because the screen is cracked in the lower left, and lower right corner. My teachers, put packets of paper, like even as small as 3 sheets, in their MacBook and close it like a folder. They open it later to find the staple cracked the screen and most of the time it affects the actual LCD layer. It’s funny but it’s so common.
Why are people like this… some will argue Apple needs to use bigger tolerances, and maybe there should be a tiny bit more gap to account for a screen protector/privacy cover etc…
But paper like a folder, come on…
Razor to get a clean cut. And then go over with your finger and cut off any bump until its smooth. I think sand paper will just make the damaged area wider
Here's what mine looks like now with the above method, I didn't use a razor blade just sanded down lightly over time. Sam exact place it looks like. Sucks because it really did no damage in terms of functionality but I just got a new one m3 and would like to get rid of this guy and I'm sure it dings the resale, pun intended. Otherwise it is in perfect condition. Not that it's worth too much anyway![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)0

I think this is one of those "oh f\*\*k" moments that can happen - nothing against OP...
Going into my local Charbucks - many of the student age folks are a bit cavalier at dealing with their laptops/backpacks etc...
I bet it would work well, but I think people are more likely to already have a razor blade/xacto blade lying around so I think it's the quicker option.
This needs to be higher. The thing that this person has is called a burr it happens all the time in metal working. There’s a tool to fix it’s called a deburring tool.
Also second this, if razor is not strong enough, try small gauge wire snips (flush cutter), and maybe some isopropyl alcohol to remove any discolour or gunk that could also be on there.
Yes. I would first try with a new Stanley blade, being careful not to slip and cause more damage. After that, use a very fine metal file. It has to have very small teeth or you will see the lines (sand paper will probably just cause a mess)
Razors are made of extra hard high carbon steel and are sharpened to a far sharper edge than any other knife you own. There's a reason for the saying 'razor sharp'
Sorry. It was not obvious to me that you are inexperienced based on your post. The Dremel can be rather precise with the right attachment so that would be my go to move. If you don’t have access to tools, a metal nail file and a lot of patience may be the answer.
On a laptop though? Not exactly a starter project for someone who’s never touched it and grinding with the wrong tool or using it slightly wrong could bust the screen or permanently damage the rest of the body
Razor and sand off. I dropped my Samsung S23U (yes it’s a crime to mention Samsung in apple sub but this just for demonstration purposes) in the same fashion and after some extensive sanding it could barely be noticed.
Sand paper or some kind of nail file just to smooth it down. The good news is it's not going to impact functionality, just make sure that it's filed down enough to not touch the screen when closed.
When you sand it back don’t just get any old pack of rough sand paper from a DIY store.
Look for a selection up to P5000 - which is very fine.
Maybe start at 1200 to begin with and work down to 5000 (including wetting the paper). Somewhere in the middle you’ll find a compound that will match the finish of the Mac.
I have had a dent or two like that. I used the diamond file on a Leatherman Wave+ with carefully controlled short strokes, and they were fine. The gouges remained, but everything was smooth.
I repaired one that a faculty dropped. I used an emery board (two sided one for shaping fingernails) to sand it flush. I put painters tape around the dent to keep the scratches contained. Came out great.
File it down then sand paper from 360- 1000 grid depend of how smooth you want, and keep your laptop angle 90º so metal chips pr dust wont fall in to your keyboard.
If you lack of DIY or simple repair skills then applecare+ is your best choice, if you don't have applecare, the use the power of CASH 😂.
man how does it matter if youre mac still looks good. Wear and tear gives macs their patina. You should use a plier or a file to remove/file the piece off and enjoy the damage. Id personally laugh about it everytime
Flick the mettle bit off with your finger, use dry noodles to fill in the hole, sand it down with 1 grit, then use nail polish to colour in. You’re welcome.
I was going to recommend a dremel-like tool and a metal sanding bit to slowly take it down until it’s smooth and level but I know now a razor blade can do it. TIL
Is it still under AppleCare? I was able to get them to provide a replacement for similar unibody aluminum damage due to the “risk of a cutting injury”.
When something like that happened to my first gen iPad (it flew off the roof of a car), I used a Dremel to smooth the corners down to the point where they would no longer draw blood.
Take a sharp precision knife and cut it off carefully. Don’t listen to stupid advices to use sand paper or Dremel tool because you’re only going to make the damage worse. After cutting the piece off, use precision knife to get rid of any sharp edges that you can feel under your finger. You can use nail filler for the edges and final touch but extra careful with it.
I’d try to put some type of rubber strip on it, and maybe something else over the rubber, until I could get it fixed. Don’t know how it would hold up, just guessing.
Just knock it off, it shouldn’t be holding on by much. Isn’t it aluminum? If you can’t knock it off, a file would work. Not a nail file, a file you get from Home Depot
You probably don’t have many options except for replacing it or simply covering it with electrical tape. Apple may offer you options in store, but they could be limited. Good luck. 👍
1) Snip off what you can. Not ideal, but if you have an old pair of wire cutters around you should be able to get a nice chunk off
2) Get a peice of cloth and cut a little hole in it so that chunk sticks out. Then file it down with a metal file. The cloth will protect the area in case you slip and collect shavings.
3) Flip macbook over and give it some good taps on the back to get any shavings out. Then hit the whole thing with a decent amount of compressed air. Do a second round of tapping to make sure.
4) Find a nice thick sticker. Doesn't haven't to be huge, but something that will cover the area and protect anything else that touches it.
Do not close it till you get rid of it. You could crack the screen.
I’ve seen someone’s Mac get taken out by a Bobbie pin
I’ve seen someone get their screen get taken out by a grain of rice lol
Id keep that grain in confinement for the rest of its days/ put it in a glass display jar next to all the bags of rice/ricecooker, and let the rice ponder about the life it could have had, the people it could have fed, the lives it could have saved. damn thats deep
If any of your devices get water damage, the grain of rice should be eligible for parole in lieu of its upcoming community service duty (drying the device with rice, mandatory all hands on deck for ricefolk)
Or make it into rice pudding. The *worst* rice archetype
You are, unfortunately, wrong.
No way — what could be more vile than rice pudding?
Gotta chain it up in the jar. It might escape from all the torture
I've seen somebody get their screen taken out by a grain of sand!
Yes das why I always wipe the keyboard and airways
I see a lot of people come into my work for “colorful lines on blank screen” almost every time without fail they have a privacy cover over their camera and it cracked the screen
Mine was a literal grain of sand.
What on earth is a man doing with a Bobbie pin
Bro I don’t have the fine details I’m just the messenger 😭
Who said it was a man?
Staples and paper clips too. I work IT for a school district, 1/4 of our 200 MacBooks need to be repaired this summer because the screen is cracked in the lower left, and lower right corner. Literally happened to me yesterday but with a tiny picture nail caught on the perimeter magnet 😭
*will crack the screen
Razor to get a clean cut. And then go over with your finger and cut off any bump until its smooth. I think sand paper will just make the damaged area wider
This is the correct answer. I do this all the time at work.
You bump MacBooks very hard against surfaces all the time at work?
Good one.
Here's what mine looks like now with the above method, I didn't use a razor blade just sanded down lightly over time. Sam exact place it looks like. Maybe he works in an apple store.
I think this is one of those "oh f\*\*k" moments that can happen - nothing against OP... Going into my local Charbucks - many of the student age folks are a bit cavalier at dealing with their laptops/backpacks etc...
When you love what you do, you can hardly call it work.
how about a deburring tool?
I bet it would work well, but I think people are more likely to already have a razor blade/xacto blade lying around so I think it's the quicker option.
i feel like w razor blade, if careless you risk a deeper slice but yeah, razor blade is easily accessible. I'd prob just bite it off.
This needs to be higher. The thing that this person has is called a burr it happens all the time in metal working. There’s a tool to fix it’s called a deburring tool.
boom i just earned some man points
Also second this, if razor is not strong enough, try small gauge wire snips (flush cutter), and maybe some isopropyl alcohol to remove any discolour or gunk that could also be on there.
Yes. I would first try with a new Stanley blade, being careful not to slip and cause more damage. After that, use a very fine metal file. It has to have very small teeth or you will see the lines (sand paper will probably just cause a mess)
A decent detail file would also work here.
Razor can cut through aluminum??
Razors are made of extra hard high carbon steel and are sharpened to a far sharper edge than any other knife you own. There's a reason for the saying 'razor sharp'
If the razor isn't good enough, a Dremel should do the job just fine.
If you use sandpaper make sure not to damage the surrounding parts, I’d personally go for a small file.
I would go with a rounded file to minimize contact with the surrounding metal
been there done that, this is the correct way to go.
That’s what I used. One for sharping knives. Worked perfectly and it didn’t bother me after that.
Taping the surrounding area is a good idea
A nail filer. 🤷🏻♂️
I have a metal nail filer that I use specifically for dings
This is the way.
Carefully pull the chunk off with pliers and sand down the rough edges.
Genius Bar if it’s still under AppleCare.
They’d charge you for damages I’d use a shop file
Yes but lot cheaper than full out of pocket part. Plus shop file will void warranty.
Only if they ever found out But, yeah, a new case trackpad and keyboard for like $80 isn’t bad…
Burn it and buy a new one.
Found the Apple rep
Dremel
Insane thing to suggest an obviously inexperienced person but respect
Sorry. It was not obvious to me that you are inexperienced based on your post. The Dremel can be rather precise with the right attachment so that would be my go to move. If you don’t have access to tools, a metal nail file and a lot of patience may be the answer.
A Dremel is fairly intuitive/user-friendly if you can find one to use.
On a laptop though? Not exactly a starter project for someone who’s never touched it and grinding with the wrong tool or using it slightly wrong could bust the screen or permanently damage the rest of the body
Razor and sand off. I dropped my Samsung S23U (yes it’s a crime to mention Samsung in apple sub but this just for demonstration purposes) in the same fashion and after some extensive sanding it could barely be noticed.
dremel
Small fine file, carefully..
Metal file. Woodworking tool. Quality response that requires handyman tools and I’m gay loll I win
watching some guy gently file it down for me would do me in TBH…
Oh hey cool name tho
lol! yep! twins!
Blue outdoor painters tape around, and file it down with a small metal file
cut with tweezers and / or sand it down
Keep calm dont care about it
Jewelry file - small and very fine - you’ll still see the spot where it was but no sharp burr
Nail filer would do the job right!
A fine file
Use a small fine grain file. Not a file for your nails, use one that is made for filing metal parts
sandpaper baby
a small metal file would work
Use a fucking Dremel. People don't know how to use power tools anymore. Or sand that bitch down by hand with different grits.
angle grinder
Hit it with a hammer
You are most definitely gonna damage the logic board and keyboard and trackpad if you try that.
Not if you don’t hit those with a hammer 🔨
A hammer wouldn't work. You'd need to cut it with something, like a chainsaw maybe.
Nail file
We use micro files to clean up stuff like this
I have had a dent or two like that. I used the diamond file on a Leatherman Wave+ with carefully controlled short strokes, and they were fine. The gouges remained, but everything was smooth.
A small file will do the trick. Tape off around the area to prevent scratching the surface around the burr.
Honestly, best bet at this point would be to cut the piece off. Sand it down, and slap a dbrand skin on it. Pretty sure they have a silver.
I repaired one that a faculty dropped. I used an emery board (two sided one for shaping fingernails) to sand it flush. I put painters tape around the dent to keep the scratches contained. Came out great.
Dremel tool
I would paste a small plastic/duct tape on that dent to cover up & leave it...
![gif](giphy|3ohzdFXeZcXL9bXIys|downsized)
nail curter and nail cutter sand paper. emergency situation while traveling. it works
Is it still working?? Man I put mine inside leather bag 🥲
File it down then sand paper from 360- 1000 grid depend of how smooth you want, and keep your laptop angle 90º so metal chips pr dust wont fall in to your keyboard. If you lack of DIY or simple repair skills then applecare+ is your best choice, if you don't have applecare, the use the power of CASH 😂.
why would you replace the case with applecare? Its just pointless cosmetic damage. Just rip the piece off with pliers and done.
man how does it matter if youre mac still looks good. Wear and tear gives macs their patina. You should use a plier or a file to remove/file the piece off and enjoy the damage. Id personally laugh about it everytime
any sharp knife you don’t care about and is a softer steel. I used a cleaver and shaved mine off
File it with 1000 then 2000 then 4000 grit diamond files.
Metal file to file it down
Flick the mettle bit off with your finger, use dry noodles to fill in the hole, sand it down with 1 grit, then use nail polish to colour in. You’re welcome.
Just a file, try a nail file if you own one. It is soft metal.
Hammer….
Probably razor and a file can fix that
Angle grinder
Use electric nail file. The one with the little pointed file tip.
Carefully sand it. Cover the other parts with painter’s tape so you don’t scuff other areas.
Some people need to just act as if laptops weren’t invented , any kind . 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Time to go to the apple store
Tape around the bump to keep from scratching surface - then use a nail file/ emery board parallel to the surface
I was going to recommend a dremel-like tool and a metal sanding bit to slowly take it down until it’s smooth and level but I know now a razor blade can do it. TIL
Careful work with a fine metal file will let you get rid of this and smooth it out to not injure yourself anymore.
Hit it very hard against the same metal object again, but in the other direction this time
sandpaper
Use a dremel
Dremel?
Get a #2 needle file
angle grinder with a diablo blade
Is it still under AppleCare? I was able to get them to provide a replacement for similar unibody aluminum damage due to the “risk of a cutting injury”.
An e file , then cover it up with a sticker
When something like that happened to my first gen iPad (it flew off the roof of a car), I used a Dremel to smooth the corners down to the point where they would no longer draw blood.
I think all you gotta do is put it on some rice =\]
a metal file should to the trick
Use a Dremmel. You can find one for 30 bucks. I will work perfectly
Use a dremel grind in down bit
A metal rasp would make quick work of it
nobody considered Apple Store?
Don't close it as you'll likely crack the screen, but if you have a file, you can clear that metal bit...
Angle cutters then sandpaper
Sell it. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but, the 2nd hand market is garbage right now... No. Wait. Always has been. No one wants them.
A pair of flush cutters. One of my favorite tools. I use this one.. https://a.co/d/bOdESEM
There is a reason why sandpaper exists
File down the bump and get a super super fine sandpaper (as high a grit as you can) to finish it and make it all smooth.
Call the paramedics immediately and do NOT touch the laptop until they come to make sure youre okay

You could try filing it? With a metal file.
Angle grinder
Chisel or file?
Dremel tool
Try sanding it off or filing it off
Dremel
Probably just a fine file and careful hands.
File it down gently
Clamps and tighten until flat
Scotch brite pad
Take it to a metal shop and have them grind it down
Throw it away and buy a new one
This hurts my heart
![gif](giphy|V2qrKUbfHbBuoT16eQ|downsized)
A file would take that right off
Maybe file it down?
Metal file
Nail file.
Just knock it off, it shouldn’t be holding on by much. Isn’t it aluminum? If you can’t knock it off, a file would work. Not a nail file, a file you get from Home Depot

You didn’t know that if you hit a laptop with a metal object that you could damage it???
[Flush cutter](https://media.kleintools.io/images/original/klein/d2755_beautyleft.jpg), I use these for everything!
![gif](giphy|gHhz5ZqkY8rzyWUiKw|downsized)
Try filing it down
These Gen z’er are f’cked!
File. Paint.
Dremel
Metal file
Nail clipper?
You probably don’t have many options except for replacing it or simply covering it with electrical tape. Apple may offer you options in store, but they could be limited. Good luck. 👍
Heavy coarse sandpaper to very fine sandpaper. sorry to say the finish is toast. could try a pair of pliers then the sand paper to save time.
Emery Board
Dremel maybe?
Dremel, then sand paper
Get a fine flat file and file it down.
Rip it off with some pliers
very gently file it down with a fine metal file
I would maybe get some super fine emery cloth and try to buff it out as much as you can
File it down
Bastard. File that is.
Good job dumbass
![gif](giphy|mBXGXR5BR7iAQDij2q|downsized)

Metal file.
Use a file to shave it down
Maybe the Genius Bar can file this down for you, before recommending you buy another one.
I cannot answer this (I dunno what I'd do to fix it) but I know I'd cry.
Sand it carefully
Emery board and seal the keyboard and screen with masking tape, paper combo.... The vents and speakers too.
Take it to the Apple Store. I had a similar issue and they replaced the body.
Very fine file maybe try nail file, metal nail file, then clear nail polish ?
Not reading any comments yet, use a grinder.
Does nobody here know what tools are? USE A GRINDER. preferably an angle grinder. Or a hammer n cicle
use sand paper
