Second Max creek. They will help you do everything right and safely. They will teach you everything you need to know about your new firearm and answer questions. Many firearms are in short supply right now if you are looking for something specific, but they will work with you to figure out your requirements and priorities to get you something in stock or put you on the waitlist for as many options as you’re interested in.
I purchased a deer rifle and scope through them in the fall, and the gun is perfect. They mounted the scope very well and taught me how to tune it in even better when I took it to the range a couple days later. Whole process was smooth and educational.
I provide free firearm familiarization and safety classes, and conceal carry if you want to check the classifieds thread.
Max Creek and Top Pack are both reputable gun stores.
Please get training and the appropriate safeties, whatever you do. Handguns are far more likely to kill someone in the owners household than anyone else.
Gun show probably not best spot for a first time buyer. Those shows are a bit of a mad house sometimes and the vendors are not always good at slowing down their pace for newbies

PT Firearms in cross plains has a pretty good selection
Second this
Recommending as well. Great experience with PT Firearms. After buying I took their concealed carry class and it was really insightful.
PT was too… ehh… “political” last time I went, so others be warned. Otherwise, knowledgeable people are there, especially for AR platforms.
You’re not wrong. There are a couple employees there who would be better off to stfu with their hot takes.
I go to Top Pack in Sun Prairie. Not only do they have a great selection of hand guns, they can also handle your NFA purchases.

deerfield pistol archery center sells them and they can also have you try them out and provide lessons
