hankyujaya

Actually I believe this is true. Malaysia as a tourist destination is getting more popular every year. As someone living in the EU, the other day I overheard someone in the train talking about spending their holidays in Malaysia. Which is crazy since a few years back, going to Malaysia for tourism in the West was almost unheard of.

The_SHUN

Because it’s bloody cheap for them

hankyujaya

It was never expensive for them. The only difference now is that they're venturing out than the usual Bali/Thailand/Vietnam spots.

BlazeX94

It was never expensive. The Euro has been consistently above the RM4 mark for the last 10 years or so.

guaranteednotabot

It’s cheap but not because of the exchange rate. Otherwise Japan would be bloody cheap for Malaysians since RM1 = 30 yen

EnvBlitz

30 yen is like 30 cent spending power tho.

guaranteednotabot

It’s kinda arbitrary then? You can’t really convert like that unless the average income is exactly the same without converting. 1 HKD = 1.7 MYR but no one in their right mind would think HK is cheap for Malaysians. Or that would imply the entire Europe costs the same.

EnvBlitz

I didn't say that, nor even imply that. I'm just saying 30 yen is literally like 30 cent in the pricing of things, and what 30 yen can buy in Japan. 30 yen can buy you what, a piece of candy? It's fair then to say it's buying power is just like 30 cent.

guaranteednotabot

Mb I thought you were the original commenter. Anyway, that 100:1 ratio is still not straightforward. Which currency do we need to have that ratio? Which do not? Which is why the original commenter or many other people’s intuition doesn’t work.

pek_starter_1234

Go on r/malaysia, tell me why this is the worst news ever and why I shouldn’t be happy about this

karlkry

how do you differentiate between *tourist* or singaporean and bruneian doing groceries, fill up their car tank and drive home![img](emote|t5_2qh8b|26554)

pek_starter_1234

It’s well documented that Singaporeans and Bruneians go to JB and Miri to do more than fill up on petrol, they go shopping, watch movies, get haircuts, go for spa treatment, makan etc Tourism is still tourism whether it’s a week-long vacation, a staycation or even a “daycation” for Singaporeans and bruneians. Heck they’re even spending their dollars in MY why wouldn’t that be a good thing?…

karlkry

the point is this statistic can be skewed because it was calculated by number of people passing the immigration department (international visitors). if we want to use this as a measuring stick then people who travel sg/jb daily are categorized as tourist for singapore statistic. if they want to call them tourist? sure by all means. if you look the numbers by face value alone then you will say you have done a good job. but failure to differentiate between tourist that come due to interest and tourist that come due to convenience makes it hard for tourism department to know which part they need to improve to pull more people in

Kamarulanwar

Tourism Malaysia delineates the difference between tourists (foreigners who come to holiday in Malaysia for more than one night) and day trippers or excursionists (foreigners who spend less than a day in Malaysia). The 20 million tourists in Malaysia cited in the report were people who spent more than a day. (Source: [Tourism Malaysia](https://www.tourism.gov.my/statistics))

Kamarulanwar

The 20 million tourists cited in the report are people who spent more than a day in the country. Foreigners, usually Singaporeans, who didn’t put up for the night in Malaysia are called day trippers or excursionists. The official government tourist statistics disregard the day trippers.

Big-Quote-547

Time for Malaysia to ban those Bruneians and Singaporeans from our amazing country. But meanwhile, we can move over to their countries and work as laborers. #Malusian #Logic

Puffycatkibble

Because RM down down down down. Also Malaysia bad.

impthetarg

Because we’re only attracting terrorist Middle Eastern tourists and not the nice white Caucasian tourists

pek_starter_1234

Middle Eastern? This isn’t the mid 2000s. We’ve been on a China wave for a good 10 years now.

impthetarg

Sorry I missed the /s

kimono38

Hmm what is this good news? How am i suppose to react to this? ![img](emote|t5_2qh8b|26562)

Big-Quote-547

Lol I bet 50% of these are just singkies crossing the causeway.

OriMoriNotSori

There are all time high border crossings from Brunei into Miri during holidays and long weekends too nowadays, cause of the favourable currency situation (Brunei and SG have 1:1 agreement on currency)

Big-Quote-547

Yes it's time to ban Singaporeans from crossing because we can only be jealous.

j_fat_snorlax

Arrivals by air might be a more meaningful number to track

tembikaisusumakkau

We're blessed to have rich Singaporeans, desperate Bruneians and 270+ mil Indonesians as our close neighbours lol

Brief_Platform_8049

This is proof that we don't need concerts to attract tourists.

GiantCake00

Why can't we have concerts to attract even more tourists?

Brief_Platform_8049

Have to weigh the pros and cons.

GiantCake00

Elaborate?

Lolz-What

Bro, the only reason why our tourism increased because our ringgit is freefalling against every currency out there.
