Some hotels, mostly due to their size or volume, have been granted exceptions by Marriott to not have to follow the T&C when it comes to the lounge and breakfast. Looking at the picture I have attached, it looks like the JW SF is one of them. So, the hotel is right, and they technically are not doing anything to break the T&C, since it is printed right in it that it is granted an exception, and there's really nothing that grieving it will do for you.

Probably not. That's just the end of what Marriott calls "Wave 1" (first six months of the year). They will probably just "reevaluate" and keep the same hotels on the list.
It's so nice of Marriott to compile for us a list of the most trash hotels we can expect the worst service at for our loyalty so that it's easier for us to avoid them.
Thank you Marriott for being so proactive with these subtle warnings.
Its still weird to me the Monterey Marriott is on there and has been for years. I've been there a bunch for work and always get free breakfast. A really good one with an omelet station.
I've never stayed there on a weekend though, maybe it goes away then?
This is why it's getting hard to justify sticking with Marriott. Starwood would've never allowed this. I'm lifetime platinum and while breakfast in and of itself isn't the biggest deal since I usually have a bowl of Cheerios at home, the fact they refuse to offer any sort of consistency with their elite benefits and are happy to make exceptions to the already impossible to remember rules they have, makes it hard to be loyal. Hilton sucks for breakfast, too but at least it's consistent. Hyatt does it right but they have almost no hotels which is too bad.
See, I got hired by Marriott before the merger, and I find, in my perception, legacy MRWD properties to be far away better than the legacy SPG properties, which I find have gone more quickly into disrepair and inconsistency,
The JW in SF is one of the most mediocre JW properties anywhere. It’s in an old fashioned building and their public areas are awful. Shitty restaurant and no lounge. Avoid.
Love the Hyatt Regency on Embarcadero, we stayed there for new years, it’s got a great view of the city and the bay as well and beautiful architecture.
Awesome hotel. We get upgraded every time. The lounge is great also. We have stayed at that hotel almost 5 times over the past few years every time we go to Vancouver due to how well they treat elites.
Same. I'm still 8 nights away from Globalist yet somehow the only inconsistency I've found with benefits is I've more than once been given free breakfast even though I'm not entitled to it yet as apparently quite a few European properties think explorist is close enough.
It’s nice. Good views. Lots of big meetings and conferences there. So depending on when you’re there, it can be packed with people from a conference. Lounge is nice. Safe area of SF.
I stayed there not long ago - breakfast if free for elites because they have no lounge. My question is WHY does a flagship property in a major city like SF NOT have an operational lounge!
Interestingly through June 30th of this year they only have to provide the 1000 pts, the person you spoke with at the hotel is correct, otherwise it seems the $100 is due as compensation as long as you request this prior to your check out.
I’m at The Jay this week. They offer free continental breakfast (coffee, juice, pastries) at their 3rd floor restaurant for Elites or 750 points per day. I took points because Il Canto across the street has the best breakfast burritos and we like to sleep in.
During my last and only visit to this terrible property, the front desk lady gleed and said they are one of only 21 hotels in the United States that don't need to give us elite any free breakfast or lounge.
I stayed there in 2019 and it was comfortable, and they had a lounge with a happy hour. It was a nice amenity, but not a deciding factor for me. I don’t think any hotel is worth what I paid there, but it was within my company’s policy.
The T&C for this hotel does not include breakfast as an option if the lounge is closed. Normally you would receive continental breakfast as an option except at resorts but in the terms there are 19 hotels that are exempt.
A lot of JW do not have lounge! Maybe none? They figure if you can afford to stay there you can afford to pay for your own breakfast and over priced snacks
You just get upgraded every time, sometimes a nice corner room with a fantastic view, sometimes a suite, but always an upgrade
The welcome nibbles aren’t consistent ime
Well their terms and conditions dictate they have to do something otherwise they are on the hook for $100 compensation for not offering a welcome gift. Please expand on your response.
they offer a welcome gift, which is 1000 points. not trying to make their case. that being said, having stayed at this property, the Paalace and the St. Regis in SF, the JW was my least favourite. weird layout, dark rooms, charme of the 90’s. Go with the St. Regis if your budget allows.
St Regis is top notch. Great bar and restaurant. Used their Bentley car service (I don’t think this is available anymore, now an “executive car”) and that was a nice perk.
Recently stayed at the Palace, got an amazing upgrade and continental breakfast was included with $10 upgrade to fully breakfast buffet.
JW is a resort for one, but everyday there's a post about the lack of amenities(especially lounges) and that neither the franchises nor corporate cares. Not sure why I'm getting downvoted.
JW sf is trash.
Agreed it’s an extremely average property. Old fashioned building.
+1

Looks like they need to start offering breakfast or lounge next month though in July.
Probably not. That's just the end of what Marriott calls "Wave 1" (first six months of the year). They will probably just "reevaluate" and keep the same hotels on the list.
Or add some
It's so nice of Marriott to compile for us a list of the most trash hotels we can expect the worst service at for our loyalty so that it's easier for us to avoid them. Thank you Marriott for being so proactive with these subtle warnings.
Why though?
Interesting bc I stay at the Renaissance listed in NYC frequently and get bfast. Don't recall a time they didn't. But maybe they did this as CYA
Just stayed at Mag Mile and lounge is open. I do not recall a time it wasn’t.
Its still weird to me the Monterey Marriott is on there and has been for years. I've been there a bunch for work and always get free breakfast. A really good one with an omelet station. I've never stayed there on a weekend though, maybe it goes away then?
Staying there tonight. T&Cs still say June 30. Should I raise hell for $100!?
This is why it's getting hard to justify sticking with Marriott. Starwood would've never allowed this. Notice how that entire list is all Marriott and includes no legacy SPG properties, which are still better. St Regis over Ritz any day.
Yeah I always try and Starwood brands over Marriott since they'll almost certainly be better
Avoid.
The JW atrium reminds me of Grand Hyatts, but the atrium at the Hyatt on the SF Embarcadero is way more dramatic.
Love the Hyatt Regency on Embarcadero, we stayed there for new years, it’s got a great view of the city and the bay as well and beautiful architecture.
welcome to the post Covid epocoliptic Bonvoy Marriott… Y'all been Bonvoyed !
Nah U
Just stayed at JW in Vancouver and the executive lounge was great.
such a good lounge . love that JW
The Parq is one of their best properties imho
Agreed, this one is amazing. Just sad they got rid of the fresh OJ machine. They said people kept jamming it up so they got rid of it.
Yup, no fresh OJ machine when I went, but there were a number of different juice carafes and also someone passing out berry smoothies!
My absolute favorite!
Awesome hotel. We get upgraded every time. The lounge is great also. We have stayed at that hotel almost 5 times over the past few years every time we go to Vancouver due to how well they treat elites.
JW San Francisco use to have an awesome lounge (like 12 years ago), but no mas.
It's up on the top floor. Had a nice view. They got cheap after covid and never opened back up. The breakfast buffet in the restaurant is like $40.
They don't have a buffet anymore
I was last there in early 2022. Is the breakfast a la carte now?
Yes
Even 5-6 years ago it was still good.
This is why folks should always ALWAYS ask the property about elite benefits before staying there
If free breakfast matters to you that much, Hyatt is basically the last brand that guarantees top-tier elites breakfast in virtually all cases.
Hyatt breakfast is always top notch.
I started staying at hyatts this year. Best decision ever
Same. I'm still 8 nights away from Globalist yet somehow the only inconsistency I've found with benefits is I've more than once been given free breakfast even though I'm not entitled to it yet as apparently quite a few European properties think explorist is close enough.
Just skip Rio’s if you can
Facts
Prepared menu a go go
JW in SF just needs to be avoided. Lifetime Titanium here and this kind of thing just doesn’t work for me.
Marriott Marquis in SF has a big lounge.
I’ll be staying there in another month for the first time. How do you like the property?
It’s nice.
Cheap ass owners, as most Marriott properties are owned by overseas folks. Powder eggs anyone?
Interestingly through June 30th of this year they only have to provide the 1000 pts, the person you spoke with at the hotel is correct, otherwise it seems the $100 is due as compensation as long as you request this prior to your check out.
The Oakland Marriott has a lovely M Club. I’ve received more Ambassador welcome gifts there than any other Bay Area Marriott property as well.
Here are 1000 more points. It will help you achieve status. Stay here and use the status for … more points.
I don’t stay here unless all the other hotels are too much. It feels tired and old. Better as a U.S. Sheraton
Stay at the jay…still not breakfast for free, but great deals on killer rooms in a new hotel in a non-sketchy area
I’m at The Jay this week. They offer free continental breakfast (coffee, juice, pastries) at their 3rd floor restaurant for Elites or 750 points per day. I took points because Il Canto across the street has the best breakfast burritos and we like to sleep in.
Jay = the former LeMeridien.
Yes, but the suites are much improved.
During my last and only visit to this terrible property, the front desk lady gleed and said they are one of only 21 hotels in the United States that don't need to give us elite any free breakfast or lounge.
Marriott Marquis in SF is my fave. Nice lounge, easy Target access for odds and ends.
There should be a monetary value if not offering anything.
Stay at Marriott fisherman’s wharf.
This is why I stay at the Marriott properties at the Wharf and just walk across the street to the 8am Cafe.
I stayed there in 2019 and it was comfortable, and they had a lounge with a happy hour. It was a nice amenity, but not a deciding factor for me. I don’t think any hotel is worth what I paid there, but it was within my company’s policy.
Stay at the Westin or the Marriott Union Square. Both are much better than the JW. Im usually 20 nights a year between the two
The new JW Bonnet Creek in Orlando does the same thing and they have no lounge.
JW in Charlotte has an amazing lounge.
Ditto in Nashville

Now that I do not know. The Joseph is awesome. The Noelle, not so much.

You just get upgraded every time, sometimes a nice corner room with a fantastic view, sometimes a suite, but always an upgrade The welcome nibbles aren’t consistent ime
Ditto in New Orleans and Miami
JWs in Nashville and New Orleans both have great lounges.
Istanbul Marmara has an exceptional club New Orleans is extremely solid
JW Berlin has an amazing lounge AND gives plats and ups free breakfast. Incidentally thr best breakfast spread I’ve ever seen.
Lol. They don't have todo anything.
Well their terms and conditions dictate they have to do something otherwise they are on the hook for $100 compensation for not offering a welcome gift. Please expand on your response.
