In the late 1970ās, an Italian restaurant āThree Brothersā opened in Beltway Plaza (in Greenbelt) and familiarized hots to the community.
All hoagies deserve hots!! We lived on the west coast (California and Oregon) for a few years and I was aghast at their idea that āhotsā meant jalapeƱos or banana peppers! Heathens!!
I grew up on King Syrup and King Molasses. As an adult I was introduced to real maple syrup and was told it was far superior.
It was like pouring sugar water on my waffles. No thank you at all.
My grandparents lived in WV when I was a kid. Whenever we visited they always had us bring them king syrup and utz chips because they couldnāt get either in their part of the state. Thatās the only reason I knew about the king syrup thing
FWIW Esskay hasn't been made in Baltimore since Smithfield bought the company in 1985. Many of us have never eaten an Esskay made in Baltimore.

It is a refreshing summer beverage that originated (I believe) at the annual Flower Show. It is half of a lemon with a soft peppermint stick (they are not the normal candy cane) which you suck the juice through. Basically a very refreshing sweet & sour treat on a hot day.

That said Royal Farms has made it down to the NC/SC State line, which is fun.

I miss Eskay hotdogs so much. I kept trying to tell My husband about them and he thought I was crazy until I had him google it and realized they went out of business. I have turned him into an egg custard snowball fiend as well. We make snowballs at home now regularly and enjoy them! He also now uses Old Bay on many recipes. We live in Colorado and he canāt wait to eat crabs on our next trip back to Baltimore!
I'm from Baltimore, but I hate seafood, so I don't eat crab or Old Bay. Also don't drink, so no Natty Boh. I do legit miss Esskay, though. Royal Farms > Wawa

I will never understand Baltimore's continuing obsession with Natty Boh. It hasn't been made in Baltimore since 1978, not even in MD since 1996. You'd have to be almost 70 years old to have ever had a Natty Boh brewed in Baltimore.

Grew up in Frederick and never heard of a whoopie pie until moving to Washington County. We definitely have eaten a lot of old bay crabs but I took a break from eating them until the population is back up again (but I miss them!) Iām very curious about the peppermint stick in a lemon though. And how have I missed out on the snow cone with the fluff on top?! Iāve been in Maryland like thirty years now!
