This literally sums up all of politics for me. Never get a straight answer to any question.

TheBanana93

They are all scummy peieces of shit. It drives me mad because its the same here in the UK obviously but this was particularly bad. In their eyes it's better to do this than actually tell the truth or they don't even know.

Pillager61

Ditto for the USA ! They only care how much in "Reelection donations" they can get..... and other brines as well...

SobeitSoviet69

Just realized my ex would have a great career as a politician, she’s a natural.

Live-Tie-8982

Canadians out there, is it normal to blatantly skate around a question like this in your government?

87Dustin71

This guy’s skating would’ve made McDavid jealous

DweEbLez0

He makes Tony Hawk look like a rookie

[deleted]

But what would brain boitano do?

cynthiasshowdog

He'd probably kick an ass or two

CoatOld7285

Normal? No... But it does happen way more than it should

Baldpacker

Umm. The Liberals avoid every single question with a pre-memorized talking point that has nothing to do with the question asked. Have you actually watched a house debate? This exchange seems particularly relevant today: https://youtu.be/02rEd1h32Ss

CoatOld7285

Yes... That's part of what I'm referring to... I never mentioned any specific political party, it was a broad umbrella statement to avoid singling out any one political party

Baldpacker

Well the Opposition ask the questions of the Governing party which has been the Liberals for the last 7 years so I guess you've already answered my question about not watching debates...

CoatOld7285

Listen at no point did I disagree with you so I don't know why you're going out of your way to start an argument by being unnecessarily condescending

Baldpacker

Because your original comment that it is not "normal" is entirely incorrect. There are far more questions "unanswered" with canned talking points than "answered" with actual responses in question period.

CoatOld7285

I mean yes absolutely, it's normal in the sense that it happens a lot and it's been going on for a while now so I agree with you but I ment it more as in it shouldn't be happening in the first place Edit: I guess when I think about it, I was using the terms "normal" and "okay" interchangeably

Baldpacker

Okay. Well given those words have completely different meanings feel free to edit your post.

brokennursingstudent

Feel free to quit being a cunt

CoatOld7285

Actually I don't know why I said that in my last comment because when I said it wasn't normal, I wasn't talking specifically about the Liberal party or anything that's happened in the last seven years, I was looking at it more broadly, as in relative to all the political parties over the course of literal decades or even centuries. So again, is it normal within the Liberal party over the course of the last 7 years, sure, but that wasn't the spectrum of time and political parties I was even referring to when I made that statement. Now if we look at all political parties over the last 40, 50, 100+ years, is it still considered normal?

ComparisonCold2016

Baldpacker here is doing exactly what the idiot in the video was doing

Baldpacker

Answering the question with the truth is the opposite of what the Liberals and first commenter did but I can see how the Liberals have stayed in power if their Kool-Aid is strong enough for you to post that.

sendbezostospace

You sound like a fucking idiot going on and on about the liberals. You're the one that drank the Kool-aid if you haven't realized everyone in the government is laughing at you.

sendbezostospace

Liberals lmao. Tell me you bought the party BS without telling me you bought the party BS.

25546

Lol, as if the Liberals are the only ones who do this. Our whole government is fucked and nobody, regardless of political affiliation, would do differently, unfortunately.

StayFree1649

It's the conveners job to stop that shit

Patman1416

With that being, is the convener bias and taking sides?

pm_me_ur_anything_k

Thank you for this, I was wondering if they had the power to do anything about it.

subtxtcan

Normal? Not often. But there is a MASSIVE housing crisis in Canada, and here in Ontario where I am, it's a huge topic right now. Guys dodging questions because he's terrified of answering. He knows as soon as he gives real information he'll get ripped apart on the house floor because the current provincial government has been opening the doors for development and housing but didn't even remotely consider affordability, cost, or community impact. All they saw was a tonne of money coming for development.

Disastrous_Ad_1859

I think we have the same thing here in NZ - we massively opened up funding for housing via having a really low reverse bank rate, local and central govt. pushes for intensification (etc) which lead for houses going from \~$700k in suburbs to +$1m for 'townhouses' in suburbs - probably same shit, short sighted policies based around making stats like 'housing availability' and 'new build houses' look good.

subtxtcan

Precisely that. We've had more high rises going up in my city in the past 10 years than ever before, the whole city is exploding!!! Except there's nobody moving in... And somehow, we have 3 homeless camps in town... They weren't there 4-5 years ago and no, it wasn't just Covid. Around that time a 1br apartment was about $1200/month. 5 years later they're 2k? That's not inflation, that's robbery.

Revolutionary_Rip876

not to mention that the government allows investment firms to outbid and consolidate any single family starter homes that come onto the market.

That's not inflation, that's robbery.

albatroopa

Those are federal ministers. They have little to do with housing, which is a provincial issue, until the provinces ask for help, which they won't because the conservative provincial premiers are too busy lining their pockets and securing golden parachutes for when people (hopefully) figure out their scam. Lil' PP, in one of his exceedingly rare appearances at work, is trying to get a sound bite out of the federal liberals, which would be completely meaningless to anyone except his facebook klan. I actually have respect for the person responding for refusing to engage, because it would just lead to some empty gotcha moment. The federal liberals are FAR from perfect. They walked back their promises on voting reform, which is why I personally voted for them. However, their metrics and strategies in handling the pandemic were excellent. They did a fantastic job handling employment and the economy afterwards. They still managed to implement the majority of their election goals, and the country is overall a better place due to their leadership. It actually terrifies me to think of what the last few years would have been like if we'd been run by science deniers like those who have taken over the conservative party. We don't need to re-open abortion laws. We don't need trickle down economics, and we don't need regressive tax policies. They just don't work.

[deleted]

Oh wonderful...your conservatives are taken over by the nutters, just like here in the U.S. ? Hopefully not as bad as here..

albatroopa

Yeah, it's getting close. Alberta has decided that they don't want to recognize the federal government.

kensmithpeng

The Government Minister is not answering the question because the federal government has no control over rents in the provinces. It is a waste of tax payers time for the opposition to even ask the question. The reason Ontario is hardest hit with sky rocketing rents is, Poilievre’s best friend, Doug Ford, the conservative premier of Ontario, removed rent controls. You want to fix the problem? Stop Voting for Doug Ford and the Conservatives!

Doreen666

lol at how you defend a totally disconnected politician in the video due to your blinding tribalism. trust me son, you are the bigger issue when you cant even see the wood from the trees.

kensmithpeng

I did not defend the government minister. I did not vote for him nor would I ever vote for him. What is did point out is the opposition member is an idiot that should not even bother asking the question cause he knows the root cause of the problem is his own party. Stop voting for Doug Ford and other conservative parties if you want the pain you are feeling to stop.

thesethzor

I don't have a horse in your race, but it's NEVER a waste of money to ask questions that highlight effects on accident or otherwise of governing. Federal, provincial, or local can ALL independently or communally make laws to resolve the issue. Lastly, if the minister could point out his accuser's guilt in the matter he should have by answering what affected the costs to make them outrageous followed by the cost...

Acrobatic-Event2721

Rent control worsen rent prices in the long run because they disincentivize the expansion of the housing supply.

kensmithpeng

Yes, rent controls impacts the supply of rentals. But you are incorrect that overall housing is reduced. Lower rents keep ownership prices low and so you end up with more individual private owners vs corporate ownership of rentals. This is the issue we are facing all across canada right now. Private equity buying up billions in residential Realestate looking for fat rental profits and locking out individuals by out bidding them.

crazy4finalfantasy

They did the same thing In america and our housing market is fucked beyond belief....well the country is but yeah

subtxtcan

The minister isn't answering because this is a nationwide problem and he can't justify the inflation, even though he DOES have controls. Yes, Doug is a piece of garbage and he isn't helping, no questions there, but this all started looooong before him in the 90s.

kensmithpeng

Rent controls are the responsibility of the provincial governments. Not the federal government.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kensmithpeng

I will thank you for letting me disagree. If we had proper rent controls, rent would not be increasing. As a result, landlords would not be willing to pay more for a property as there would be no profit innit for them. No rent controls = higher housing prices QED

[deleted]

[удалено]

kensmithpeng

I continue to disagree with you. Controlling rent supports individual family home ownership by keeping Realestate prices low. Of course there are Economists that dislike rent controls. They are called republicans and conservatives. These are the people that profit from lack of control, so of course they have this opinion.

PrintableKanjiEmblem

What does rent controls have to do with purchasing (not renting) a house?

curalt

That’s normale everywhere. It looks Canadian politicians are the only ones who keep asking hoping for a proper answer.

[deleted]

It happens everywhere but Canadians are the only ones that remain so calm

Santz-9

As a mexican, yep. In our senate a couple of weeks back it literally became just a bunch of the senators of one side bullying and screaming at the other side like a bunch of high schoolers. It’s actually amazing how you canadians remain so calm in such an annoying exchange.

[deleted]

As a fellow Mexican; quiubole compa?

Santz-9

Nada mi hermano, tu?

[deleted]

Nada mas aqui en phx, sin tamales ay el escandalo

[deleted]

Y usted?

Santz-9

Un poco de frio y feliz por la navidad, ahorita voa ir por unas carnitas :D

Bigmountainmikeog

Sadly and infuriating, yes. This is pretty much standard, especially if it's a particularly damaging answer we all already know. In Canada housing prices have been totally unhinged in the time frame poilevre is asking about, in many cases doubling or more

Buttassauce

Is this Canadian filibustering?

[deleted]

Eh?

Hologram0110

Pretty common. Our parliment does have a lot of scripted exchanges, which undermines the actual discussion that is supposed to be taking place. The person asking the question is the new leader of the Conservatives, and known for asking disingenuous "gotcha style" questions. In this case he is fishing for a sound byte about how the party in power has failed to address the cost of housing issue. The question itself it a bit stupid because housing is overwhelmingly a provincial and municipal issue, not federal, and the issue is not confined to Canada but instead most of the western world. He isn't trying to fix anything just tear down his opponent. In this case the liberal minister doesn't have an intelligent answer prepared and instead "sticks to talking points", like an idiot. I actually think we should remove cameras from parliament and instead just release transcripts. That would reduce the incentive for bad-faith actions like grandstanding.

PorygonTriAttack

This is a great breakdown of what happened. This Conservative leader is surprisingly popular with the fringe populations, perhaps because he has aligned himself during the trucker convoys.

osopeludo

Yes. This should be no surprise to anyone that has ever watched question period in the house of Commons. The joke is it's not called "answer period". Besides, they're not looking to really get an answer, they're looking for the soundbite that will play through the news cycle which THEN might give them some traction to their agenda. The information that guy in particular is "asking" for is freely available if he googles it.

Creepy-Ad-4832

As an italian yes! In fact it's probably better if they do, because if they don't they go fascist... Italy is fucked...

[deleted]

The minister avoiding the questions is doing a bad form of politics badly, but the guy asking the questions is a disingenuous conservative trying to score cheap populist points. The truth is that conservatives haven’t done and wouldn’t do anything to help Canadians deal with high housing prices.

Malalang

A quick Google search gave me a range of 635k to 685k.

bdn1gofish

A much quicker answer than watching even half of this video.

subtxtcan

Really? Huh I actually thought it would range more around 700k, might be my area though.

Alloth-

how much is that in real money?

sushimane1

That’s a lot of freedom dollars

TomSunshine

My Google search just now said $479k. Wonder why our results are different. Average cost of house in Ottawa is what I typed.

Malalang

I scrolled past the first few results to get to some government and realtor pages. I looked at census pages from 2021 and 2022.

berrykiss96

Yeah that’s kind of the problem with such a simple question. It’s very regional and he’s asking for the national average. Vancouver is the highest city at over $1mill average. The lowest provenance average is around $200,000. That’s a hell of a range. Not that the guy avoiding answering comes of as anything other than a tool. But it’s a difficult question to answer with any meaning. Even the average change listed from a couple years ago varies wildly among the provenances with a low of dropping by over 7% in 12 months and a high of rising by almost 8% in 12 months. Average house vs average wage would be a more reasonable big number question. But politicians are rarely actually interested in being reasonable.

voyaging

??? Literally was asking about Ottawa specifically lol

berrykiss96

Ah I do see where he said that at the beginning. Apologies. But he also said (multiple times) national. It was definitely a confusing run around and the minister had a chance to answer multiple different questions or even just say he didn’t have that data on hand but could get back to him, but didn’t. But the first comment looks like a published report and second a live trend.

hookedlol

Canadian or in U.S. dollars?

Malalang

That's a good question. I'm in the US. But the articles were written in CA. So, I would assume they meant Loonies.

dat_boi_100

You could always do a quick search yourself to find out

thefoodiedentist

This is a skit, right? This can't be for real.

CoatOld7285

No... No... It's for real unfortunately

Santz-9

Ikr it seems so fake but you call tell that, painfully so, it is actually real.

darctones

It is a skit… it’s a farce of real life formatted to be chopped into 3 second clips suitable for your political party’s social media of choice.

Wik_Worthington

What a slimy piece of shit politician. Makes me sick that these are the people running our country.

[deleted]

What a fking waste of time n money is this parliamentary session! Imagine pulling this bs in school. You will get ur ass whooped.

ICantDoThisAnymore91

Who can tell me how many apples are left when John has 5 and the Canadian Government comes and takes 7? Mrs. Grimshaw, our football team has remained undefeated in the last 3 years, resulting in the 3 state championships in our division.

No-Cockroach-4499

And will continue to do so

kensmithpeng

You are correct! This is a waste of time. And Skippy knows it. He knows that Doug Ford removed rent controls in Ontario because Skippy owns hundreds of rental units. He also knows that the Feds can do nothing about it. So do yourself a favour and elect a competent provincial government and Don’t vote for a time wasting gaslighter like Skippy.

Laenoric

And they wonder why young people don't care about politics.

[deleted]

They celebrate apathy.

SamSchuster

I wonder if they wonder?

DukeNuChem

Its as if they are in two different realities! that minister Can nada... it seems.

LFakh

Can-you-?nada It's 126 Jobs. *Sits back with a smile*

[deleted]

God damnit. He’s taking a page out of the playbook from Scott Morrison - Former Australian PM that got an absolute shellacking at the latest federal election and was the first ever former prime minster to ever be censured by Parliament after it came to light that he’d secretly sworn himself into 5 (I think?) ministry positions during the pandemic. OP’s video is a perfect example of how Scummo would regularly handle press conferences and questions in parliament from the opposition. Almost a perfect example in fact - at one point he was asked a question (I don’t recall what it was) and he just kept giving the same answer of ‘#XYZ# Jobs’. An absolute disgrace in both instances and citizens of every country deserve better leadership and representation.

gr1mm5d0tt1

He would also blame shift to other parties despite them not having the power to make any decisions, blame shift to citizens (have a go to get a go) implement illegal policies and just straight out lie. Things they had on video of him saying straight out (not twisted in any way) and he would deny it. I called it the shaggy defence

Tasty-Papaya5135

The chairman is horrible. He should step in and force an answer.

ROMPEROVER

How exactly does he do that

BlueBone313

With words from mouth.

ROMPEROVER

I see him having as much success as the one asking the question.

Banana_Shaped

It is the chairmens job to prevent people from avoiding questions like this so he is failing at his job

[deleted]

Banana_Shaped

As an American I believe I know more than you about Canadian politics

25546

I think you THINK you know more, but it doesn't seeem like you actually do.

cwargoblue

As of 2020, the average cost of a house in Canada was $488,000. The cost decreased by 1.3% that year. The cost ranged from $736,000 in British Columbia (7% increase y/y) to $183,000 in New Brunswick (-2% y/y)

wierdnitro7

Well at least someone knows. But I am genuinely curious, but not at all curious to do any work for it, as to how much housing costs increased since 2015. 2015 seems to be the time when the left? took over, so i wonder how much housing has increased by. If it's in-line with inflation, fair enough, but how does inflation compare to wage growth? Is it like the US, who's wage growth has really stagnated, or is it healthy? Again, super duper lazy. But very curious...

ranger2112

Avoiding the question just points out that you are guilty

NinjaShogunGamer

Why is that guy in the blue such undeserving of being human?

topsyturvy76

Neither guy is a good person , don’t let this interaction fool you

25546

I don't see why you're getting downboted so hard. The Liberal MP is being a piece of shit in this specific video, but this is also from PP's TikTok, so obviously it's going to make his party look better and not show when they do terrible shit, like promote racism and white supremacy to be the norm.

Devilshorn28

It's like convo between my nerve cells during exam

Fragrant-Career4727

Looks like a game they are playing with each other

Retarted-Liberal

The kids in the hall has all new cast: the parliament

Cronabae

After the third time I would just say “Listen MFER just answer the damn question.”

Ququleququ

And that is why we hate politics

burntoutbadger

This gave me flashbacks to when I tried cancelling my contract with my old internet provider! "Will you please just cancel my contract" "Did you know that we have great phone packages available to you because you're such a loyal customer" "Will you just cancel my contract" "We can upgrade your internet to gigabit for only XXX a month" And so on and so on ad nauseum

Jynkoh

I feel like these two have been at this since the last time I've seen this video.

I-Dontbelievethehype

What a freakin clown. Just answer the fucking question you WEF puppet

DistinctFoot3956

HOW MUCH?????

Donginthedark

Well that makes me feel better. The American government isn't the only one full of deliberate avoidance and blatant bullshit.

shaneknu

This looks downright civilized compared to some of the stuff we've seen in congress. Remember Inhofe with his "Look, I found a snowball outside, therefore climate change is a lie!"

[deleted]

I saw this maybe a dozen times and I think if it was me asking the question I would of lost my shit in the chamber.

I would have gone mad like Gatsby did when arguing, them bursting in anger, with the husband of his crush.

Regular_Dentist2287

Any politician who doesn't directly answer three questions in a row should automatically lose their seat.

Cody-Nobody

You guys dodge difficult questions exactly like Trump lol Just keep saying bullshit and refusing to answer a question that hurts your argument.

dapper-dave

Eerily similar to the banter when any conservative reporter asks Karine Jean-Pierre (White House press secretary) a question.

TopAlps6

Good to know that Canadian politics are just as raggedy as American.

JohanScholes

Hey. That's every Viva of mine.

Fox-84

I mean, it was a simple question.

Just, horribly frustrating. This is why people hate politics and politicians

RogerThat_Tyler

I would’ve walked very calmly across the room and slapped that asshat in his shit-spewing mouth.

[deleted]

This is so frustrating 🙄

[deleted]

This is the way the UK govt works. But they are far better and less obvious in deflecting the question

Certain_Suit_1905

this is painfully stupid

sleepy_koko

It makes him seem way more guity "Current cost is about $600,000 however we are working to fix that," then go on about the job recovery, avoiding the question just makes him out that he is aware but doesn't want to acknowledge it

kpyeoman

I really dislike PP, but these kind of non responses drive me nuts. Just answer the damn question, let him get to his follow up and go from there. He won’t have his gotcha like he thinks he will, but these kind of double speak games are BS.

psyphren01

I love it. It looks like there was a massive spike in home prices because of supply and demand, and this guy just wanted to use that one figure as a cudgel, but ol'boy was like Nah son.

Jakcle20

Jobs don't mean shit if you can't afford to live. Why the fuck are we still using a system that takes wealth and moves it out of reach for the majority of people.

aerger

See, when Katie Porter (CA) does this in the US House of Representatives, she already has the answer, and when the person she's asking doesn't respond, she goes ahead and answers it for them, making them look like an even bigger idiot. I approve of this very much. https://youtu.be/ezTR0DQhnao We need more Congresspeople like her, challenging "norms" that only benefit corporate interests and screw the American people on the daily.

beire_

why is there no judge to remove the wrong answers and demand it or else remove privileges or office position.

toperomekomes

How is the speaker allowing this fucking charade to go on?

MicaelFlipFlop

As the speaker I have to say that during my session 60% of the requests for parliamentary compensation were accepted by the competent authority.

thepenguingeneral

Why is there no authority figure to stop that blatant I dont want to answer that but LOOK THAT THIS bullshit like everyone in the room is 4 and will forget

Fatjunk420

Ppl like this should be shot by the wall.

The Speaker should have torn the Minister a new one.

Anonymous_cyclone

The guy in black got completely destroyed because he doesn’t know the exact number either. The more this goes on it looks less good on him. The guy in blue got to say whatever he wants to say and completely shut him down with just the cost of avoiding one question. He should have stop wasting time, express the other party doesn’t care right away, spit out the number and continue his point.

Titanus-De_Raptor

no one cares a out what the guy in blue said though, the more he avoids answering the more he looks like he doesn’t know shit about his job the guy in black isn’t making a point about housing prices, he’s showing that the guy in blue is in a world of his own and doesn’t give a fuck about the canadian people, he gave him so many chances to show even an ounce of competence, but the guy in blue instead keeps reading a bunch of unrelated talking points off of a list

[deleted]

This is what happens when a nation of woke soy boys vote liberal. Liberals are cancer. Communist cancer. They already came or freedom of speech, they are now in the process of taking our guns and Internet freedoms. Yet they win every election. Great job libtards.

Like, bruh, just Google that shit.

AmiInderSchweiz

Maybe start with an easier questions, like What is your name? What is your quest? What is your favorite colour? Then move on to, average cost of an average house. Alternatively, have already done the research, know the answer, and tell them in a public forum that is being televised.
