Interestingly, there's a correlation between stress and having female babies. This has been observed both [on an individual basis](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4110952/) and [on a societal level](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12923159/).
So yeah, it's possible that VIII was so overbearing in his desire for a son that his wives were much less likely to produce one.
I'd be interested in a study that measured the stress levels of both parents at conception, since I don't think either link I posted properly isolates that.

If anyone doesn’t know how this works, usually when a baby is made, a biological male either passes on his X chromosome or his Y chromosome. Biological females always pass on an X because they have the XX chromosome (so it doesn’t matter which one they pass on, it’ll be an X). A male passing on an X makes the baby have an XX chromosome (biological female), and a male passing on a Y chromosome makes the baby have an XY chromosome (biological male). This means that it’s dependent on whatever the male passes on (or “chooses”) when considering what biological sex the baby will be. There also may be other ways this whole thing can happen, but as far as I know those are rare, and definitely weren’t taught in my biology class
