Staedtler offers [coloured leads](https://www.staedtler.com/dk/en/products/pencils-and-accessories/pencil-leads/mars-lumochrom-204-drawing-lead-m204/). I’m no artist, so I have no clue what these are called in artist terms... I think I have seen something similar from Koh-i-noor.

Thank you!! Ordered! Also realizing from this why I hadn't gotten good search results: I don't _only_ care if it's common graphite mixture or something else... I probably also care about color-differences. So colored graphite inserts is perfect! I'd still be open to alternative _consistency_ and _feel_ if anyone knows of alternative inserts. Eg: if it wasn't laughable to put a nice crumbly charcoal into a 2mm form, that'd be cool. But maybe there's something advertised as different-feeling yet still practical? 🤞🤞

> still be open to alternative _consistency_ and _feel_ if anyone knows of alternative inserts. Oh right: and *water-soluble* is a property that feels more realistic but I've also been unable to find (just [this old thread](/r/mechanicalpencils/comments/b8lqkr/water_soluble_2mm_graphite_leads/))

They're waxed based coloured refills, like coloured pencils. I use... a lot of them. 2mm coloured options are vanishing in our modern era, though :(

You don't know what you miss, if you don't own a Koh-I-Noor 5.6 lead holder, like 5340 or at least a 5347. Their Russet Sepia (how they call Red Chalk/Sanguine, is the best you can get for sketching. Same goes for their Dark Sepia/Sepia 5.6mm. They also make these in wooden pencils, where they sell the Red Chalk is called Red Chalk, but it's the same material,as the Russet Sepia 5.6mm. For 2mm leads, Staedtler Red is my favorite, next are the Caran d'ash colored leads (expensive stuff and not as cool,as the Kohinoor Classic colors, that Da Vinci,Michelangelo,Raphael and so many other masters used). Canson 180 Artbook (or Canson Universal-same paper) as also Hahnemuhle 120gsm sketchbook, work the best with the Koh-I-Noor leads I mentioned. Faber Castell 187120,is the best eraser for any oil/wax pencil. 5.6mm leads, can be sharpened with any common pencil sharpener. I prefer M+R brass or any of their metal sharpeners, for these kind of leads. For 2mm, Staedtler 502 is the way to go! Enjoy!

Martin_Orona

there is charcoal and sepia in 3 and 5.6 mm but no in 2 mm

For 5.6mm I've bought grease pencils, removed the paper, and rewrapped them in painters tape to get them to be thick enough. Silly, I know, but I much prefer using my lead holders over using grease marker's paper encasing.

There are 2mm mars carbon.

Pentel makes colored and even fluorescent 2mm leads for their 'Multi 8' lead holder. But the leads are shorter than usual 2mm types.

txdm

Those look like the right length for for the 5228's short barrel. Are they just wax colored pencil leads?

drifand

Yes, the Pentel ones are colored leads. Slightly waxy.
