Spent a year while working, taking care of daughter, and studying for the MCAT. All on her own with no support, even loaned me some money during that time so I could take Kaplan myself. It's not easy, but it can be done.
My dad went to go take care of his parents, and my mother became disabled. However I was lucky, they never really pestered me that much about being "successful".
Of course when I was growing up they paid everyone enough to live on and so "whatever career you choose, as long as you're happy" was good enough. Now though, things are very different.
I got my dad a job as a teacher at a college at 65. I used his rhetoric against him. I told him that if he wanted to build a future he wanted to see, he'd have to do it himself, because everyone else is out for themselves. Now he's teaching kids how to weld, and how to look out for themselves.
Companies beware! Unions are getting stronger. Time is up. We know our worth.
