I've only been through 2 and this was nothing compared to that first one but its crazy how we went so long without one and now this
end of the world cant be too far off now
This is the unofficial Melbournian town square where we all report our strange city wide experiences. Wether it’s an earthquake or something weird falling from space, we all gather round like kids on the school playground discussing our little theories and thoughts
Oh you just reminded me a bird flew at my mouth to steal a potato cake was eating at Flinders station two days ago. I was so shocked I just picked up the quarter that fell on the ground, lamented my potatocake and stepped onto the escalator.
Bold rascals.
It’s normal. Significant tectonic movement will cause a chain of reactions. It may fade out or a fault zone may have become more active due to movement which means we might get them more frequently for the foreseeable future. Earths crust is VERY dynamic, it’s nothing to worry about
Pretty mild here, just thought we had a really fat possum trundling across the roof, but something on my bedside table wobbled so that hypothesis was quickly deconfirmed.
Earthquakes are actually caused by the giant possum that lives below Melbourne rolling over in its slumber. Let's hope we never live to see the day it awakens.
*the ground tears asunder as a monolithic eyelid peels back.*
*unable to grasp scale and enormity of the gigantic black void appearing below them*
*the humans watch both in ignorance and horror as the single great eye stares back*
*dead, cold, uncaring*
We actually had some possums running around on our roof making lots of noise just 20 minutes before the earthquake happened. Guess which startled me more.
No shaking physically felt here in Thornbury but my bedroom windows have a special rattle I have discovered they reserve specifically for earthquakes.
I'd rather not have discovered this.
I libe in the Otways and I've not experienced anyrhing like it in my life, felt myself moving and the whole house was kinda like swaying foe around 10secs. I seriously thought a meteorite had hit or there was an alien invasion lol and my fight/flight responses kicked in and I jumped up, got dressed and was looking out and the sky waiting for flashes or something lol.... over active imagination haha
Well you should have considering it originated very close to you. Thought to be Mg 4.9 161km southwest from Melbs. Edit to Apollo Bay and upgraded to 5.1 now
Yeah it's cooked. This is my first time living in a highrise apartment building and the first time I felt a quake here I grabbed my cat and evacuated lol.
I grabbed my cup of tea and stood in the doorway to the balcony. My husband was down in the garage and I thought there’s no way I’m going down to rescue him if the place collapses. I’ve seen enough disaster movie to know doing that never ends well.
I didn't feel it this time. Probably too far from me. But the first time I felt the one that happened during covid times... My whole apartment building swayed while I was playing a game of Val, my lights flickered a couple of times, and I was so confused. Like wtf just happened? Am I dreaming? Why did my apartment fucking sway?! I immediately asked if anyone was in Melb and if they felt it too and they said yes. So I then googled it...
It's silly but I did not know Australia could have Earthquakes. I was mind blown. I never felt an Earthquake before and that was my first one lmao
Definitely agree with that. The noise / initial motion was < 5 seconds, but the feeling of being in a boat on choppy seas lasted a good 30 seconds for me up near Melbourne Airport.
Bayside, same. Just kept going. Very exciting.
Interestingly it was just after England lost against SA in the cricket by 270 odd runs. Probs not related 🤷♂️
That one felt different to the last one! Last one felt like a bomb going off and I instinctively ran outside convinced that I'd see a huge fireball, this one kinda felt like being on a rocking boat for a few seconds and I didn't hear anything
You're kidding me.
Haha my wife and I were watching TV and I just went to the kitchen to load the dishwasher and I got back and she was like 'Did you feel the Earthquake?' And I was like 'Are you sure it wasn't just the dishwasher?'
I didn't feel shit.
I always feel them.
Yes just woke me up from some weird dream I was having where I almost hit a kid with my car in a car park and his dad, who was in a wheelchair, was yelling at me. I really wanted to see where that one was going. Thanks earth and your constant quakes
5.1 down in Apollo Bay
https://earthquakes.ga.gov.au/event/ga2023uszzah
I knew I wasn’t going crazy and felt it! I know the feeling of one after living in Japan for years, but I wasn’t sure cause 1) this is Australia and 2) didn’t hear the associated rumbling sound that comes with quakes lol
So according to the official Geoscience Australia center was around Apollo Bay area & currently rated at 5.1 magnitude although they usually amend the first figures later on with more data .
Be interesting to see if any land slides down that way.
https://earthquakes.ga.gov.au/#
Felt in Cheltenham.. id never experienced an earthquake/tremor until I moved to Melbourne now I've felt 3 this year alone.
I'm not sure I'll ever get used to it, what an unsettling feeling.

Something is up. Very sus. We need a Royal Commission.
We cant even blame Dan Andrews anymore :(

**unzips* keep going..
🍿
You can always blame Dan Andrew’s.
Blame Dan Andrew’s what?
Autocorrect got me good 🥲 😂
How could Dan Andrews let this happen?
I've only been through 2 and this was nothing compared to that first one but its crazy how we went so long without one and now this end of the world cant be too far off now
Does this mean house prices will soften?
No they'll just be sold as deluxe massaging houses with luxury vibration settings.
What is going on.
A previously unknown fault line became active when that quake happened during the last lockdown and we are still getting aftershocks.
Are you talking about the "Betty's Burgers and Concrete" earthquake? Is that the one that activates a fault line?
Yep. I should add that I'm not an expert I'm paraphrasing an article I read awhile ago.
Either the apocalypse, or the lead up to a more significant quake
We’re in the end game… difficulty ramps up faster
right?!!
I like how we all meet here whenever we have another earthquake. I think it's cute.
This is the unofficial Melbournian town square where we all report our strange city wide experiences. Wether it’s an earthquake or something weird falling from space, we all gather round like kids on the school playground discussing our little theories and thoughts
I was thinking that we're all like the seagulls from Finding Nemo. Earthquake?
Oh you just reminded me a bird flew at my mouth to steal a potato cake was eating at Flinders station two days ago. I was so shocked I just picked up the quarter that fell on the ground, lamented my potatocake and stepped onto the escalator. Bold rascals.
Yeah well…I knew there was gonna be an earthquake because my uncle works at Nintendo and gets all of this information first.
It's comforting.

Reddit is often cited in the news. Hence why it's very important that users have as vulgar a username as possible.
Username checks out
It’s like the episode of round the twist where Bronson eats the fish and then ‘Bronson’s got a whirly willy!!’ But it’s the back end and not the front
Hi again everyone
Nothing brings this subreddit together more than earthquakes and dodgy real estate agents.
It'll be back to sooking about colesworth by tomorrow arvo
Except for maybe someone tailgating in a big black Ford Raptor.
What about dodgy real estate agents causing earthquakes? I reckon there’d be a tsunami of posts eh he he he

I thought it was just my vertigo
I had a vestibular migraine earlier today so it's been A Time having an earthquake the same day lol
What the fuck is going on dude, this is like the 4 noticeable earthquake this year, I've never felt them before
Mother nature is going to shake us off like a bad case of fleas - George Carlin
Ever tried to shake off a flea? They're grippy little bastards.

Well we are overdue a volcano out Apollo Bay direction, maybe it’s that
Pretty mild here, just thought we had a really fat possum trundling across the roof, but something on my bedside table wobbled so that hypothesis was quickly deconfirmed.
definitely also thought it was a possum in the roof then felt my bed shaking

Lol, I’m imagining morbidly obese possums causing carnage on your roof now.
We actually had some possums running around on our roof making lots of noise just 20 minutes before the earthquake happened. Guess which startled me more.
I bet it’s the possums
No shaking physically felt here in Thornbury but my bedroom windows have a special rattle I have discovered they reserve specifically for earthquakes. I'd rather not have discovered this.
I love how reliable Reddit is for these things haha. Edit. Google reports an estimated magnitude 4.9 earthquake in the Otways.
You were right in the epicentre!!
You're awesome 👍
wow damnnnn that sounds surreal
You were fast! Edit. Yes, definitely an earthquake.
Felt that all the way in Geelong
Well you should have considering it originated very close to you. Thought to be Mg 4.9 161km southwest from Melbs. Edit to Apollo Bay and upgraded to 5.1 now
Felt it in Colac too!
Felt it in Warrnambool
Ditto
Same
You were close to the epicentre it turns out.
You really feel it in an apartment, and I’m like ugh, not again.
Haaaaaaate feeling these in an apartment building
Nice little shot of adrenaline while I'm trying to sleep.
Ikr I’m always like… whelp this is how it ends
This. The *swaying* feeling is horrible
Swaying????? Like the buildings literally sway? Hell no. I'm terrified of heights and have had nightmares about that.
I’m on the second story of a townhouse and that’s high enough for me 😳
I didn't feel it this time. Probably too far from me. But the first time I felt the one that happened during covid times... My whole apartment building swayed while I was playing a game of Val, my lights flickered a couple of times, and I was so confused. Like wtf just happened? Am I dreaming? It's silly but I did not know Australia could have Earthquakes. I was mind blown. I never felt an Earthquake before and that was my first one lmao
Yep, had a long tail on it too.
Definitely agree with that. The noise / initial motion was < 5 seconds, but the feeling of being in a boat on choppy seas lasted a good 30 seconds for me up near Melbourne Airport.
Ye I’m in point cooked and it felt the same here!
Broadmeadows and I second that
Bayside, same. Just kept going. Very exciting. Interestingly it was just after England lost against SA in the cricket by 270 odd runs. Probs not related 🤷♂️
So many night owls at 2:20 am
Got woken up by the damn thing ….
Insomniacs united
Just finished a movie, looked at the time and thought nothing good happens after 2am and then opened reddit to read there was an earthquake!
Love being validated by fellow redditors!
You’re awesome and are just glowing today!
Felt it in the western suburbs! Thought this would be the best place to check.
Yeah I’m in St Albans and felt it!
aw man i felt nothing am i’m around there 😭😭 too engaged in my gaming i guess
Yep, monitors started shaking just as I picked my nose. Tried picking again a few moments later, but couldn't replicate it.
I love turning on 3AW after an Earthquake. Tonight should be fun, all the late night radio drunks.
How could Dan Andrew’s do this!
Hahahahaha.
Checking in for yet another post-earthquake meetup! Kind of concerning how many we've been having recently...
So, you come here often?
Third time since 2021!
I felt in st kilda
Yep, was taking a dump when it happened
Scared the shit out of me as well
same
Earthquake? At this hour? Very rude to wake me up.
I wasn't sure if it was sudden wind or an earthquake.
Same was on the balcony and heard a loud noise and my cat ran inside.
That one felt different to the last one! Last one felt like a bomb going off and I instinctively ran outside convinced that I'd see a huge fireball, this one kinda felt like being on a rocking boat for a few seconds and I didn't hear anything
Yeah, this one wasn't shakey for me, but instead.. gyrate-y?
Yeah I agree - last one the sound seemed to wake me like a loud thunder noise, this time we just felt like someone was shaking the bed
I just moved to tullamarine this year, very close to the airport and that last one felt a plane crashed i about had a heart attack
Yeah, I just came to check!
You're kidding me. Haha my wife and I were watching TV and I just went to the kitchen to load the dishwasher and I got back and she was like 'Did you feel the Earthquake?' And I was like 'Are you sure it wasn't just the dishwasher?' I didn't feel shit. I always feel them.
I love the instant verification 😂
Anyone know the actual scientific reason why these keep happening now???
I’m pretty sure it’s because the world as we know it is completely and utterly fucked. Not sure if that effects Earthquakes or not.
A previously unknown fault line became active when that quake happened during the last lockdown and we are still getting aftershocks.
I’d be interested too!
It’s because of Dan Andrews, obviously!
Felt something in North Melbourne, noticeable but not concerning
I was having a bought of bad anxiety and thought maybe it was that shaking? I guess the general sense of foreboding has been justified AHAHA
Why have these become more frequent the past few years? I never used to feel them for the past decade. Climate change is real?
The mole people are getting bold. The uprising is approaching. Soon we will all bow to our mole underlords! Repent!
Yes.
Science says its because we are essentially being crushed slowly by tectonic plates, I'd like to believe they're just trying to give us a big warm hug
Felt it in Carnegie
It’s still happening
It was about 5 seconds for me
4.9 apparently
Well don’t stop!
Beat me to it!! Geez you’re quick! Felt it in Coburg.

I better go check to see if my lawn chairs are alright.

The bloody bugger woke me up!
5.1 down in Apollo Bay https://earthquakes.ga.gov.au/event/ga2023uszzah I knew I wasn’t going crazy and felt it! I know the feeling of one after living in Japan for years, but I wasn’t sure cause 1) this is Australia and 2) didn’t hear the associated rumbling sound that comes with quakes lol

Wasn’t sure wether it was a little baby earthquake or just wind. Glad I’m not the only one who felt that
https://earthquakes.ga.gov.au/event/ga2023uszzah for the specific quake event
haven’t felt the last two, even though neighbours have - feeling left out :(
Felt in Cheltenham.. id never experienced an earthquake/tremor until I moved to Melbourne now I've felt 3 this year alone. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to it, what an unsettling feeling.
