If you haven't done it already, try checking your cars settings if you can tune those lights down. It used to bother me too till i found a setting to automatically reduce brightness of the console at night.
I haven’t checked on the legality of it, but I was in court disputing a speeding ticket. Guy that went before me was disputing the ticket he got from driving with the dome light on.
It causes the interior lights of the car to reflect off the inside of windshield when it's dark outside. Distorting the drivers visibility.
You'll notice this a lot more if you're in a area with less street lights or building lights (Freeways). Won't be that noticeable if you're in a normal city or neighborhood.
Of course, if you know how to drive, you'll be fine.
It has nothing to do with your driving ability and skill. Anything that distorts driving visibility can have a fatal outcome, no matter how good a driver you are. This becomes even more significant on a statistical scale.
Not sure about the windscreen, but the passenger window and the device itself always catch the corner of my eye when driving in very dark situations like unlit streets or motorways.
Yeah, same, don't get me wrong, it's fine 90% of the time, it's when we are on a pitch black motorway, doing 70 MPH with no street lights, the light and refection catching the side of my eye is annoying as hell.
112 km/h is quite fast, I would not drive that fast with the low visibility that comes with pitch black night.
Although I live in Germany, so it's still around 0% of the maximum speed limit. (We do have a maximum Speed limit on or motorways, it's just not set by the goverment but by the universe)
Yeah, I know how it sounds, but this is very normal in the UK, our main motorways are 70 MPH and in between cities and towns where there is no powergrid they are unlit.
Your eyes adjust to the brightness inside of the car, making it more difficult to see things in the darkness outside of your car. This is common sense and involves only the most basic understanding of how the human eye works.
Do you drive?
Driving at night and having a bright light turn on will affect your night vision. Sometimes, depending on the vehicle you are driving, there is a bad glare across the windshield and/or rear view mirror. This could cause you to crash by not being able to see where you are steering the car. Even a slight change in the steering wheel can cause you to veer out of your lane. If the light is on too long, then turned off, you’ve lost your night vision and if it is dark enough outside, it could be difficult to see out of the car beyond where the headlights are shining making it difficult to see objects.
Its pretty distracting already to drive children since they dont understand to leave the driver alone (then again ive seen adults not know this)
Add reduced visibility and you could crash
I’m reading so many comments here with the same experience as mine. My parents also told me when I was a little kid it was illegal as well. Is this like a time honored tradition similar to Santa? When I have kids do I just lie and say it’s illegal too?
It was the same for my parents, and I understand the visibility thing... however, my roommate apparently has absolutely no problem with me using one of the lights to read or see what we eat on the road home when we get out of city.
So... I guess some drivers or car arrangements are worst than others?
I once drove my friends in my car and I purposefully turned on that light so that they can see better.
They asked why I couldn't drive without that light.
You can't beat the system. The light must stay off.
I already don't see all that well when driving at night. Turn on the lights in the car on top of that and suddenly crashing becomes quite the realistic scenario.
My daughter’s car the light got stuck on, she actually got pulled over by the cops and told to turn it out as it was dangerous.
She explained it, and they said she needed to get it sorted out
I had to duck tape it, because I could not get it to an auto electrician for 3 days.
In Finland we think the driver is a drunk driver if they have the indoor light on. It’s like a signal towards other drivers that you must be careful now.
Windows reflect roughtly 4% of the light that passes through it. if that refected light is brighter than the outside you won't be able to see the outside at all.
It screw with the drivers night vision and makes it hard to see outside.
Shh, some still think that parents aren't basically vampires.
And part of it might reflect on the the window screen.
This
It's irritating to drive with it on, basically.
Yeah.. It's annoying. I cant see the road clearly and disturb my focus
I like it, without that light, the bright elements on the console pain my eyes
If you haven't done it already, try checking your cars settings if you can tune those lights down. It used to bother me too till i found a setting to automatically reduce brightness of the console at night.
I knew, but I switched it back, because on Darkness I become drowsy
Oh damn.
So you rather not being Abel to see on most of the windows?
I don't have that problem
You don't see how, when it's dark and no other light source from outside. Any reflections of the light?
Because that is literally not far from the truth.
I haven’t checked on the legality of it, but I was in court disputing a speeding ticket. Guy that went before me was disputing the ticket he got from driving with the dome light on.

Because with it on you can't see s-t outside of the car. Visibility during the night is already poor.
What’s just as bad now is smartphones and tablets, the glare and reflection is annoying af with how bright modern devices are now.
You cant it see reflecting on the windscreen tho.
Not sure about the windscreen, but the passenger window and the device itself always catch the corner of my eye when driving in very dark situations like unlit streets or motorways.
I have a bunch of smart devices that turn down their brightness when it's dark.

What is s-t?
shit
May be "street"? I am pretty sure it is the street.
I think in this instance he means shit
Thanks for censoring your profanity. I’m 6 years old
Hahaha I am telling that to my kids now, my father was going ballistic when I did it as a kid
How many times I've had a flat battery wen it's left on.
If it's dark out and you turn on a light Inside it can turn your windshield into a mirror.

Posted by the 7-year-old gang.
It used to be a battery killer if you forgot to turn it off.
Because you can't see outside anymore.

Because that's basically true lmao
My mother told me it was illegal. I looked it up years later because i held the belief until I got my DL. It's not illegal.
I’ve seen that stupid light drain the life out of a battery over a weekend, also, light inside means you can’t see for shit outside at night
You have obviously never driven a car before.
This meme shows that you are still a kid.
Cos it turns the front window into a mirror in some conditions……
My dad told me driving with it on was illegal ._.
Its not that its illegal its because its hard to see especially at night when its turned on because of the reflection of the light on the windshield
I’m reading so many comments here with the same experience as mine. My parents also told me when I was a little kid it was illegal as well. Is this like a time honored tradition similar to Santa? When I have kids do I just lie and say it’s illegal too?

Drains the battery
Not so much the back or middle one, but the map light in the front most definitely would be an impairment at night.
I’m light sensitive at night so I’ll turn it on sometimes to mitigate the temporary blindness I get from other people’s head lights
I was thoroughly convinced that we would be pulled over and the driver immediately arrested, and sent to jail. Atleast that’s how my dad made it seem.
the OP Bigbumbabemint is a bot
I do too
You get fined for that
I once drove my friends in my car and I purposefully turned on that light so that they can see better. They asked why I couldn't drive without that light. You can't beat the system. The light must stay off.
My parents always said we'd get pulled over ... is that even true? Lol I'm 30 and still don't know the truth
It irritates your eyes and can disrupt your vision. Have you ever driven a car?
You can't see outside the car with it on during night. Also depletes car battery by a decent margin.
😂
it's annoying af and if you leave it on bye bye battery
because distracting the driver = crash
Of course! You’re draining the battery
I already don't see all that well when driving at night. Turn on the lights in the car on top of that and suddenly crashing becomes quite the realistic scenario.
My eyes! My eyes are burning! We're all going to die!
Crybabies, I drive with it on. Ask my kids, it scares them.

HEY! it illegal.
In the dark the lights inside a car can irritate the driver and they make it harder to see outside.

Damn so true
fr bro, its just a light
Headlights weren’t spotlights back then either
Windows reflect roughtly 4% of the light that passes through it. if that refected light is brighter than the outside you won't be able to see the outside at all.
They should have made that globe red
They wanted you asleep
My dad had drugs guns he took of the bulb 💡 on his shit 😂
What, have you not heard of the Great Dome Light Pileup of 86?
Law prohibits the use of interior lights while driving. Edit: apparently I’m wrong. I should have left y’all to complain.
Not true
Fax (it is annoying, though, but not illegal)
I have on more than one occasion driven to and/or from work or school with the light on and just... didn't notice it till i was getting out of the car
Because they were holding and did not want to draw attention from the cops.
Realest shi😭
