My grandpa used to be a Spanish teacher and now he's starting to get dementia so everytime he sees someone remotely Hispanic he starts trying to talk to them in Spanish.
1: there's a charm in trying to say something in the language of the establishment, just as saying Arrivederci in an Italian restaurant or xiexie in a Chinese one
2: many white women have Spanish as their native language, for example, the current president of Mexico
I regularly use gracias at just random people in general. Enough people know what it means so that if in the moment it takes my brain 0.02 less seconds to think of gracias then it takes to think of thanks or of mersi I go with it.
