Student: "I would kill for free college" A voice from behind him: "What was that son?" Student: "I said I would kill..." Army recruiter: "What would you do for free college?"

PirateRoberts150

sounds familiar, very familiar

Sacallupnya

My DD-214 blankie is comforting while reading this.

Common-Scientist

Almost as comforting as the bivvy!

No_Wealth_9733

Except something like 85% of people in the active duty US military will never see combat in 20 years of duty. You can literally join up to be a cook, or do administrative work, or logistics.

Uncommon-sequiter

Yeah, (figuratively speaking) 99% of the jobs in the military are supporting the 1% that is fighting the front lines and beyond. Yet people act like it's the opposite.

KingPhilipIII

I know. I’m in the army. I know exactly what it’s like. It’s just a joke.

Silversmith2627

Funnily enough, I went to a rally that was promoting debt forgiveness. I talked to some of the people there who had a lot of student loan debt, and I kid you not, when I asked one of them about how to get rid of the debt, they said “the government should pay it off! What am I supposed to do?! Get a job?!”

NorguardsVengeance

Well, if you can point to an entry level job that starts at $7.50, or even $15, that can pay down the interest and principal on $120,000 reliably, while still allowing for eating and sleeping, and owning clothes, people would be less concerned.

Dwro1234

If you got a decent degree in an in demand field, then you won't have a problem finding a decent job. My AS cost me $8k, my BS cost $20k. If you have $120k in student debt and are unable to find a job then that sounds like you have to deal with the consequences of your poor decisions. You could have spent $12k and become a licensed hvac tech, or electrician, or auto body tech, or plumber, etc starting at $30/hr.

NorguardsVengeance

Tech has and will be a perpetually in-demand career path. It isn't the fault of recent graduates with MScCS or BACS or whatever, that they are currently competing with people with PhDs and 15 years of industry experience, because the massive tech centers have been focusing on short-term shareholder dividends, and laid off half a million people in a year and a half. It's fucking nonsense to presume that is the fault of the student, who is now lining up around the block at Target, because industry veterans are being hired for peanuts. I expect you to turn around and blame all trades students/apprentices for being fucking morons, for not predicting the future, when housing collapses, and the jobs dry up, despite it happening while they were actively enrolled. All of the teaching jobs dried up. You think the people who did 6-8 years of school got the memo that nobody would retire a decade later, when pensions stopped existing and retiring was no longer an option? You think that if they were told that a decade in advance, that they would have picked a more lucrative position. If only they had a crystal ball...

Science_Drake

I feel like children is a big part of that sentence lol.

Kiraakza

Lmao just their own children right?

Mesarthim1349

"You wanna kill? 92G it is, son, say less"

ImperatorAurelianus

Legit happened to me. I was talking to my friend in the hall way going to WW2 a global history and said something along the lines of “I would really kill for some financial aid of some kind rn.” Didn’t know we were passing the army recruitment desk 60 seconds later I’m almost convinced to do it. If he had more than one minute before I had to get to class he may have actually got me.

RocketDog2001

Thing is, military is not bad. I would recommend it for any young adult that doesn't have a life plan in place. You do get a job that no one will shame you for, you learn skills and experience, maybe do a little travel, etc. G.I Bill is just gravy.

_serial_thriller_

I did say that in college. 😂 “I literally killed to be here…”

IWantDie247

i know this is a joke but i think its very important to note that military personnel do not receive free college, they pay for it with their particular skill set and by risking their lives. they earn college, we pay for it.

3personal5me

Did I not earn the money I pay for it with?

IllegalIranianYogurt

In Australia, you automatically take out an interest-free loan with the federal government to pay for your degree. Once you earn over a certain threshold, you pay it back in small instalments via tax

Chief-Bones

I’m much more in favor of this than say - “Hey you took out 200k to go to a private school and get a Music Theory degree, let’s let the taxpayers pick up the tab no need to pay that back”

IllegalIranianYogurt

It's pretty reasonable yeah

hillbois

I mean I rather have our taxes going to free schooling instead of Israel or to bail out some corporation that made some bad choices

Chief-Bones

Here’s the neat part community college and tech schools are extremely affordable! Folks don’t have to go to private 4 year institutions. Especially if they don’t have scholarships or need based financial aid.

Unknwn_Ent

Controversial to think in America, but shouldn't be

Old_Algae7708

💯

adminsaredoodoo

interest free, except that it is tied to inflation. so currently HECS is climbing faster than a regular loan cos inflation is so high. if inflation doesn’t come down everyone with HECS debt is thoroughly fucked

IllegalIranianYogurt

That is angood point yeah

DiogenesLied

Interest-free is the fix. WhyTF are US-government backed loans changing compound interest?

PROBA_V

Here in Belgium we don't even need to take a loan. The state makes sure it is affordable for every Belgian and EU/EEA citizen. €1000 per full credit year. If your parents ear less than a certain ammount you get a significant discount that depends on how much they earn and should you need it, you get cheaper student housing

redditardshateme

I’d be for free education for everyone if we could somehow play to everyone’s strengths and tailor their education to what they are good at doing. Side note just because you have a college degree doesn’t mean you are smarter than someone e that doesn’t.

FartsonmyFarts

If not free, make it affordable.

EFAPGUEST

I would happily agree to a sensible program that helps people pay for college, but I have zero interest in paying for someone to go to some school out of state for $20k per semester. I settled for a boring, cheaper university because that’s what I could afford. If free college does become a thing, it would not be “go wherever you want and the state will pay” it would be “here is a program were you can get a degree at a local community college without accruing a mountain of debt”

TedRabbit

I would think that very few people are actually going to out of state private universities that cost $20k per semester, and the large majority that do are from wealthy families that can afford it.

frankyp01

Neither of those options really exist in the United States, so why are you assuming the most expensive option is likely?

EFAPGUEST

Because people aren’t just asking for a free public college, they are asking for the government to cover their costs.

NotOK1955

THAT is the right course of action to improve our country. I’d suggest one other stipulation: obligatory one or two year community service.

SexualPie

we already have community service. its called taxes

Rare-Impact-1791

Obligatory community service? So compulsory work you aren’t getting paid for and don’t want to do? There’s a word for that…

SportsbyCompian

What how dare you!?!?! My 4 year Piece of paper absolutely makes me not only smarter than those without but also just generally better /s

OMG_its_critical

I would want it so the number of available slots in a degree program is managed state by state, and dependent on the projected demand for that degree in that state. If someone is still persistent that they want that degree, they can apply for an out of state or private university.

Gobal_Outcast02

By free you mean taxpayers pay for your college obviously

Juiceton-

The problem most people have is that taxpayers are always paying for something, and that oftentimes isn’t even something being used by the public. We as a society have sat back and been completely fine with tax breaks the large corporations but get up in arms about a potential tax program that will actually help people. College education is very much in a crisis right now because rates are rising while real wages are staying the same. Despite that, more and more jobs are requiring degrees for entry level positions. No matter how you look at it, the college system needs to be fixed somehow. Whether that’s by increasing government subsidies, offering interest free loans, or flat out offering free college tuition, it doesn’t really matter. But it does need some work done.

PreferenceNo9490

Bruh, people be really hating military personnel for no reason, I’d say that they definitely deserve free education after military service. Everyone got their reason why they decided to join army, for some it is a family tradition, for others it looks like the easiest way to get access to said free education due to their personal financial problems, for some, who don’t live in US, it is a must , I am one of such, I currently have 4 and a half months more of mandatory service left out of original 14 months. It’s not just about active service in which you can die even if you are in a tank or a bunker at the very last defense line, you could be injured or die during training, one of my comrades lost a few fingers during live grenade exercises, it turned out that the grenade’s fuse expired & hence burned out way faster than supposed, we also were close to getting an explosion in ammunition storage, one of the anti air big bullets was bend at almost 90 degree angle and some of gunpowder pellets inside have fallen out, in addition someone was “smart” enough to be smoking inside the storage at that moment, luckily, nothing happened. In short, those who went through service deserve the free college or at the very least a discount for it. As about people below, I heard a lot about them, but never met them irl, this September I will go to university, perhaps I’ll meet such people there, hopefully they won’t be as aggressive as usually depicted.

gringo-go-loco

I got zero problem with military personnel getting free healthcare, free education, free daycare, and access to lower interest rate loans for housing. Make them tax exempt too. It pisses me off how poorly the US treats veterans. My grandfather was 102 years old and a ww2 vet. He had serious tooth pain and went to the VA. They didn’t want to treat him. My whole family just split the cost.

CallsignKook

In Texas, disabled veterans don’t have to pay property taxes. So there’s that at least.

Greedy-Guarantee8175

Ill up one, make them have *perfect credit score* after x ammount of years of service, and about lower interest rates, that is absolutely not a thing. Banks keep fucking veterans and service members with interest rates, make it law that they cannot go above a certain rate of interest, and for anyone saying about the 6% thing, that is not for active duty members, I tried and that is for cars, personal loans and credit cards you had BEFORE joining AND protects ypu from getting anything above 36%; THIS should be lower. As service members you should have *protection by law from anything above 6%*.

gringo-go-loco

The government could just pay the interest for house, auto, etc loans and give them 0% interest. Credit cards too up to a limit.

comicbookgirl39

YES. Military personnel are pretty chill and most had to go through Hell. My uncle was in a military branch and from what I’ve heard it was TOUGH. These people deserve free college, they put their lives on the line, the least we can do is make sure they have a way to live comfortably.

sanctuary_remix

The most common reason we get hate is because of the stereotypical nature of our job, i.e. war. When people want to have a moral view on life, they tend to not like our presence, as we represent what they perceive as what is wrong. So long as no one outright is violent towards me though, I fought and my brothers and sisters fought for them to have the freedom of their opinions, so I say, let them exercise it. I just will always kindly ask that they don't try to do anything towards me that they may end up regretting.

Significant-Rush3389

Whatever people’s opinions are of war or the military in the end doesn’t matter. These are the terms of the contract we sign which are basically made up by the people they elect to office. They can go ahead and write their senator a letter about how we shouldn’t get college and medical care covered and if their senator doesn’t want to get reelected maybe will actually try to champion those complaints. The biggest problem is at the college and university level where they absolutely fleece anybody who wants an education. It is asinine the amount it costs and the gate is kept by them monopolizing anyone’s chances at a wide array of careers without going through the colleges. But. There are other jobs not entirely unlike the military that do offer tuition/books/housing assistance. Say if you worked at a major bank and wanted to go for accounting, or a hospital and wanted to level up in the nursing field. A lot of people really just don’t know and don’t find out what all bene’s are available through their employment. In the army, you don’t have that problem because of the psycho-social environment where the low key chatter is always about inherent benefits where if you don’t know, you will soon find out.

sanctuary_remix

The military does benefit the most from its own community. The vast majority of us are so tight knit and want to see each other taken care of and succeed that a ton of helpful information is just thrown right at you even if you don’t ask for it.

Sirconseanery

As a veteran who used the GI bill, the money runs out quick. People act like it is a total free ride anywhere, no, it is not.

adminsaredoodoo

didn’t you see the title? they said “had me in the first half”. as in, they agreed with giving the military ppl free college, but they disagreed with the second half

-Beefous

Man I’d be pissed up to my knees if I lost fingers because some asshole didn’t check the expiration date on those fuses and for a TRAINING EXERCISE Jesus Christ somebody write that man a scholarship

Finalitys_Shape

Are people saying that service members shouldn’t get free college? The military doesn’t do a ton to set you up for the private sector, *especially* the infantry, so it’s definitely fair for the risk it entails

Renegadee_Angel

Amen brother. The infantry just gave me a nicotine addiction and bad sleeping habits lol.

[deleted]

How about that PTSD and divorce?? Lol

Renegadee_Angel

I left with only one of the “D’s”. Unfortunately that was indeed a divorce, but better than a DUI…

Farabel

Yesn't? Leftists see college as something that should be publicly funded rather than having to personally pay out of pocket or take highly predatory loans, and thus they shouldn't get free college for being military but instead because college should be free or cheap *as a whole*.

dheebyfs

Why shouldn't it though? Proper Education leads to prosperity, development and political/economical awareness

FilHor2001

Take my country for instance. Czechia has free college tuition but that leads to thousands of "students" avoiding paying taxes by enrolling in a college that doesn't require you to attend daily and can't kick you out till the rest of the semester and act as students but in reality they just slack off, not contributing anything to society. Free education is cool and all but people are assholes and will take advantage of it.

awesome9001

What percentage is that of the students though? Cause everything has abusers it doesn't mean that we shouldn't do it at all. Adding rules that need organizations to check on people would be expensive however isn't there still a way to fail out of college? Im interested how it works over your way

IsMyFlyDown

There will always be people who try to cheat a system. Not sure why people use that as a reason to not bother trying to improve.

awesome9001

Reagan. The myth of the welfare queen he beat into people's minds has done so much damage and now everyone's a pseudo anarchist thinking "taxation is theft"

Daedalus_Machina

Everybody, on some level.

MachoMachoMurph

But how will we create class dichotomy and an overwhelmingly huge lower class if we give everyone equal footing in education?? You're bonkers.

Helios_One_Two

90% of jobs do not require a degree to do effectively

Last_Recognition9929

Crazy why the people that post that shit are the same ones voting for the party trying to take those benefits away from us vets

Rough-Tension

TALK TO EM

Baked_Waffles_86

Everyone deserves free college. Knowledge should not be paywalled

georgewashingguns

While that's true, it's oddly not in their interest to have a population that is both educated and not in debt

RealBrobiWan

Who deserves free education?

TiaxTheMig1

Who deserves power? Running water? Internet? Fuck the concept of "deserve". A smart country invests in their citizens. A doomed country doesn't. Sink or swim is a horrible philosophy to apply to an entire country of people.

RealBrobiWan

Yeah, I think you misunderstood my intent. I agree with you totally. Education is expected to be free until a certain level, I don’t agree with that, education should be free at all levels. No arbitrary guidelines of who deserves it. Military didn’t earn free college, they paid for it a different way

TiaxTheMig1

Apologies. Had a rough day and I may have been a little overly dismissive and aggressive in some of my replies tonight.

The-MatrixAgent

Veterans or members currently serving should get way more benefits

Firm-Character-6852

Vets and active service members shouldn't be taxed imo. I should not have to pay a single tax. Free college after. Hell free land/home. Also unlimited beer

ColeTheDankMemer

Education wouldn’t be the same if it wasn’t for the military throughout history. We’d be controlled by Nazis/Communists if there was no force to stop them. I think free college for those who let us live in the pursuit of happiness is a good trade off in our favor.

BeetleBleu

Could one not consider investments in public education and research to have similar downstream consequences as far as humanity's overall wellbeing is concerned? Hasn't our understanding of the theory of evolution, for example, saved us from disaster just as those soldiers did?

Perhapsmayhapsyesnt

If Darwin never lived the worlds wouldn’t be worse

8champi8

Anyone having to pay for some basic college degree is insane to me. But you guys already pay for a ride in the ambulance so I guess at this point you’re just used to this kind of bullshit.

Fayraz8729

If you want a hot take you can consider that socialism in America is exclusive to the “warrior class”. Many jobs that involve being trained in combat come with the benefits of free healthcare and a pension on top of social security. You can look at it as sort of a “buttering up” to the people that can (and many times have) overthrow your country within the blink of an eye. Smedley Butler probably helped since he actually warned of a potential armed fascist takeover after WW1 that had a lot of vets pissed pdf after going to war and coming home to a broken economy.

Low_Abrocoma_1514

*IT'S NOT FUCKING FREE*

SpicyTang0

Not even G.I. Bill is free, you have to pay into the plan albeit a small amount to get access once you're out.

nateskel

Post 911 GI Bill doesn't require you to pay into

Dangerous_Cap_5931

Nobody

MagnusLore

First image actually does give free college btw.

TerribleCalendar5843

If they even come back alive enough to use it

Smooth-Physics-69420

Crazy idea: both do. Because the group up top? Their college isn't free either. They destroy their body, their minds, and even risk losing their lives for the prospect of that education. If anything, they pay a higher price.

cishet-camel-fucker

I support free college but I have to admit camping out on the lawn instead of going to class is a poor way to repay the public for their grants.

AdonisGaming93

This just shows how dumb people are. People need to stop thinking of free college as an individual problem and start thinking about how the COUNTRY is affected by it. If a new 2024 albert einstein cant afford his studies, then you never would be inventing new things. Free college isnt a "welfare entitlement" it's an investment by a country to try to make sure that every single citizen has the ability to get as productive as they can be which BOOSTS the education of the nation and try to bring about more critical thinkers who then invent new things. Someone that is uneducated is not going to create new technology that boosts productivity. Free college AND TRADE SCHOOLS gives the entire population a boost in education that should lift the entire country up. People need to stop being so selfish and individualistic and realize that this isnt about you. It's about everyone as a whole. A more educated work force BENEFITS EVERYONE.

[deleted]

Fuck yes!!

Own_Accident6689

I mean. I'm in the first picture. I think the guys in the second picture should get free college.

CALlCO

I mean looking at Germany where everyone gets free college they seem to be doing pretty well

turtlepope420

As a vet, i support the GI Bill. I used every last penny of it. I'd support free education for anyone who provides a service for their community or country. Peace corp, milotary, whatever. Four years minimum is a long time to be away from the comforts of home.

jday1959

The best way to “Support the Troops” is to fight against politicians who will send them to War on behalf of corporate profits. The young protesters are on the right side of history. Every American should have access to “Free” College . Education is an investment

Memes_Coming_U_Way

Don't forget that those same politicians sending them there are also the ones who sabotage them, basically not letting them do anything right. Like in Vietnam, we would've gotten MUCH better footholds during the war if only we didn't have people deciding "nah, you're not allowed to fight this way, even though they are"

DefiantBalls

> "nah, you're not allowed to fight this way, even though they are" That's because standing armies are held to a standard, unlike terrorists. You might as well just glass the place if you stopped caring about following the rules.

unsuspectingllama_

I'm a vet, and I'd say both deserve free college.

4Shroeder

The joke is that they both deserve free education. The most uneducated people think that neither do.

KnifeWieIdingLesbian

The point is that higher education should be accessible and affordable for everyone

JohnXTheDadBodGod

Everyone enrolled in a Public college or University.... As they should be if it's fucking called "public".

Exaltedautochthon

Call me crazy, but maybe education shouldn't be conditional on being willing to shoot people in the head for archcapitalists.

TheFaalenn

You think only capitalist countries have military?

Maria_506

Everyone deserves free college asshole, you shouldn't have to kill a child in the middle east to do so. Holly fuck, more educated people in the population is better for the country, why the hell are people acting as if only thing the college is good for is finding a job.

LtHughMann

Everyone does. Education is an investment for the entire country, not just the individual. Plus, university education reduces crime rates, which leads to savings in law enforcement, and generally better quality of life for the general public too. Also, higher education leads to higher life long income, and hence tax generated, on average.

Hightonedloidy

In a perfect world, everyone could have free college

Befuddled_Cultist

All Americans deserve free college.

[deleted]

I’ll counter with everyone deserves an education. & soldier worship is pathetic

Memes_Coming_U_Way

No one is "worshipping" the military here

policri249

The military rejects millions of people per year. Why are we even having people pay for their job training?? I've been paid for all of my training

sanctuary_remix

Because for some of us, we would like further education either within the job field we were trained in, or pursue other ventures and just have what we were trained in as a fall back. For example, I will be retiring at the end of this year from the Marines, and I was trained and worked as a paralegal. I have an interest in possibly furthering my education to become a lawyer or go the judge route. I have earned my free college to do this, or pass this on to my child if I so incline to so that he may not have to worry about student loans. As far as those that were rejected, most of them were rejected for health, drug or criminal related issues. My time dealing with the recruiting effort at a point in my career showed me firsthand how many people do sign up, only for us to discover they have a felony charge or they have severe asthma. Something that can't be waivered no matter what. While things may be lenient at times, the military does try to have standards so that people can perform what is asked of them when they come in, at least that was the mentality for us in the Marines. I can't really speak for the other branches.

bawitdaba1098

Everyone who has good enough grades. I really like the European model. Not everyone is smart enough for college, but the ones who are shouldn't have to pay to play. The current system is built so many people have to choose between staying in poverty; go into massive debt they'll be paying the rest of their life; or work themselves into the ground to eek their way into the middle class. Then you have rich privileged assholes who don't know shit, and would rather protest whatever is trending than go to class.

DuckTectiveDuck

Whats up with people at the bottom? Is there anything I missed lately

Due_Designer_908

Veterans.

Agreeable-Tooth2545

I dunno. Seems like a fair point to me.

Ok-Toe8383

As a vet, I disagree.

Agreeable-Tooth2545

Well, as a taxpayer, I don’t.

Aromatic_State

As a French guy, I have to say education has to be free the government has to provide free education, free healthcare and security. If your government can't provide any one of those ot is a failure. Why do you pay taxes for ?

ArcadiaBerger

I'm amused at T.P.-for-Brains presuming that the group in the upper photo ARE NOT the same people in the lower photo...two years later.

jterwin

It's not about deserving, it's about the social good.

wakatenai

education used to be much cheaper. tuition actually started as a thing the high class created in order to make it harder for lower class people to get a proper education. they didn't want undesirables making their way up. as well as they needed a general population to not be so smart so they'd be easier to control. and what kicked off the whole tuition thing in many universities was when they had to deal with students protesting wars and genocides. so they they'd being in the national guard or police to beat them up. then they'd install tuition fees. which later became somewhat more accessible to the lower class again because a higher educated population is in fact better for society and the economy. problem is now that it's insanely expensive, it's becoming a barrier again, and student loans are near impossible to pay off in a timely manner for most graduates. both because it's gotten more expensive than it's actually worth due to universities inflating tuition and because wages haven't kept up with general inflation even for positions that require a degree. average yearly income in the US is something like $60,000-$69,000 right now. but if wages had kept up with inflation over the last 100 years the average wage should be around $95,000-$110,000. and the cost of tuition has clearly sky rocketed as well, and goes up something like 4% every year. so it's no wonder nobody can afford to pay off their student loans.

joe_the_insane

Forcing people to kill for education is dumb Even Iran has free college/Uni for Christ's sake

SonOfTheHeavyMetal

Not american here. Who volunteers for the army deserves some love, and "free" college would be fine. Anyone else has to work their right to instruction as everyone else, and if the system isn't fair...idk it's not my fault nor yours.

Drackar001

Yeah, I don’t see that as free. A civilian signed up to serve our country. Their compensation was shitty salary and some decent benefits. This is not free. It’s simply a contract and college is part of their compensation package.

Yodas_Ear

Why should the taxpayer subsidize the education of Nazis?

Tried-Angles

"Free" schooling is an investment in the quality of nation's supply of labor. Higher skilled labor makes people's labor more valuable which makes the nation overall more successful.

Artanis_Creed

Everyone deserves free college

Donnerjackson

Yes let’s discuss if free education is good. But before that, let’s also discuss if saving our biosphere is useful, if letting people have human rights is of any purpose and whether or not a handful of super rich should decide the destiny of billions…this is so tedious…our main debate is over whether we should have a good society or whether we should be miserable

Sin1st_er

Society should only benefit you if you are of benefit to society, given that you are capable.

Sin1st_er

Society should only benefit you if you are of benefit to society, given that you are capable.

hidinginthetreeline

Totally right people should risk their lives, their body, and mental health for a shitty grant that barely covers a bachelor's degree. Conservatives only care about us when they can use us as a club to beat up the left. Republicans are the domestic enemy the oath talks about and I’m tired of pretending otherwise.

GM_Nate

as a veteran, i say: EVERYONE deserves free college. because i don't want to live in a country full of idiots.

They dont want to go to those woke ass college's 🤣

Transcendshaman90

Everyone

VisibleFun9999

matt_chowder

Or.... No free college

Awaheya

Military don't get free college. They do a job that jobs pays for their education. Some companies do this as well when they want to encourage employees to move into positions that are harder to find people for.

DrMetters

I feel everyone deserves free college/university. Military or not.

[deleted]

How dare taxpayers expect the money they already have to pay to go towards education, the most important investment for the future of our country.

Lumpy_Nectarine_3702

College is an antiquated system to begin with. Most people aren't there to be educated they are there to be trained for a specific field. When college graduates get into the field they were educated for they are completely unprepared for work.

SinesPi

While nobody deserves free college (Those soldiers earned it as part of their benefits), the current college system is an actual scam. Even for a useful degree, the whole system is fundamentally broken. The simple "College loan forgiveness" request doesn't actually solve the problem. It just tells the banks and the colleges that they can keep getting away with scaming barely legal kids out of a shitton on money, and that the government will pay them when their victims can't. Something needs to be done to basically charge the schools and banks with fraud or something. I'm no lawyer. Perhaps what they've done is 100% above board and legal, and nothing can be done. But it can still be fixed going forward, which is what should be done before we even consider bailouts. If I were the Senate (like Palpatine was) then I'd basically propose absolutely draconian laws to hurt these institutions. Then I'd follow up with something like, "Well, I suppose I could be more reasonable. I mean we ALL want future generations to have a good education at a fair price, right?" If I can't make them pay under the current laws, then threatening them to behave by forgiving the loans themselves would be an acceptable compromise before settling on reasonable restrictions going forward. It'd probably never happen that cleanly, of course. But I'd be a lot more okay with loan forgiveness paid for by the government if they at least passed laws to make sure it would never be needed again first.

the_clash_is_back

The dude that designed the infrastructure that keeps you entertained fed and safe deserves free collage. Give free collage to the people who designed those guns, not the ones that use it.

military_grade_tea

They already pay and arm and a leg for college. They've paid to go and they are protesting. Perhaps we should listen? Our brightest are saying what our government is doing in our name is wrong. Or you can listen to some of our politicians who are sponsored by aipac.

grabman

Everyone deserves free college. Society needs better educated people.

Any-Conflict-1816

The American mentality of the deserving vs the undeserving is toxic as hell

Mad_Soldier_Hod

I feel like colleges are such a scam right now. They cost a ton of money that puts you in debt for years, take up valuable years of your life that should be used for gathering work experience, settling down, and starting a family, making those things basically impossible. They push political agendas onto students through a heavily socially engineered environment, and then when you graduate you’re just dumped into a completely different world way later than anyone who didn’t go to college, with no safety net of savings, a job, or real experience outside of a degree, which often isn’t enough to be considered as a candidate. Academic (non-vocational) high schools also push really hard for students to go to college, making a huge part of their junior and senior year about preparing for college, as if it’s the only option to be successful. Basically turning the education system into a moneymaking machine for schools to indoctrinate, swindle, and screw over kids. I was lucky enough to go to a vocational school, get a co-op job when I was 17, and join the union at 19. But so many of my friends and loved ones got screwed over by colleges. It just hurts to see people you care about work so hard to follow their dreams, only to be completely screwed over.

gearhead251

College should just be free in general. An obsession with what others deserve leads to us not doing good things cause some who "don't deserve it" get access.

Pro_Hatin_Ass_N_gga

More redditors mad that the meme depicts them. Same shit different day.

PitifulAd3748

The Army does pay for college if you're in the service. Once you have your degree, it's possible to get out and do what you actually prefer.

Sbro1285

If you help our country, you deserve free college. If you sit around and not do shit, you don't deserve it. Especially if you choose to get into bs jobs.

Xboxben

Cant afford college? Blow your leg off on an IED that way you get free disability and college duhh!

SyedHRaza

Murdering for US empire good. Protesting genocide committed by us empire bad. /s

RedScarffedPrinny

They deserve free college but the best the american government can do is homelessness and no medical care

GuyWithSwords

You don’t get to decide who deserves college or not based on their political opinions. Protesting is the most American tradition. If you’re anti-protest, you’re anti-America.

WearDifficult9776

It’s not about “deserving”. As a national priority, we should educate everyone, as much as they can handle “for free”.

Permutation3

Why should anyone but the person going to college pay for it? Makes no sense at all. You want the folks who didn't opt for extra education pay for those who did? It's like saying people who don't get enough food should pay for the folks eating at 5 star restaurants.

maringue

Oh please, conservatives use veterans as a political prop and *promptly* fuck then over whenever they are forces to decide between giving a billionaire a tax cut or paying for the healthcare they already promised the veterans. Conservatives don't care about veterans past using them for politics.

nickthedicktv

“They deserve free college” Okay so you’re gonna give it to them? “No. Best we can do is let them become homeless and suicidal”

FungusTaint

Education investment has a much higher economic dividend than pointless military spending, but that’s none of my business

Striking_Caramel_788

Everyone deserves affordable education. And can workplaces stop asking for college degrees for Entry Level Posistions?

[deleted]

Education shouldn't be deserved, education is a right... Right?

AlphariousFox

Everyone. Everyone deserves free college. Sadly we don't live in that reality. But it should atleast be affordable to everyone

Goinghardfor

Everyone deserves free college.... wtf

UsernameIsTakenO_o

Nothing is free. Military personnel get paid tuition as part of their compensation in exchange for service. When people say they want "free" college, what they really mean is they want someone else to pay for it in exchange for nothing. "I don't want to contribute to my own success. Everything should be handed to me. I deserve to be catered to simply for existing."

Utahteenageguy

Everyone

jacktheshaft

Ask any vet. They paid for college in other ways

Thelittlestcaesar

Everyone. Literally everyone.

Cptspaulding2

When I was in college my classes had a shit load of veterans some of the funniest guys I've ever met.

drillia

Armed Forces, Veterans, Doctors, and people who earn it via scholarships

EffingWasps

Service members have been able to take advantage of the GI bill since WWII

spicyhotcheer

Even Iran has free college. Why can’t USA have it as well?

TriGN614

I think it’s ridiculous that YOU should pay to be a more productive worker. That makes literally no sense to me

ItsMeToasty

Other countries in Europe and other places have free college. They are far smarter than America. Pretty much all medicinal breakthroughs and vaccines come from European scientists. I wonder how they got their schooling

IWantDie247

nobody deserves free college and to my knowledge, nobody receives it either. civilians in the united states apply for a job and use their time and particular skill set to pay for college. people in the military also pay for their college, except they are paying with their time, skills and by risking their lives.

Ollanius-Persson

No one “deserves” anything someone else has to pay for.

Kiraakza

If you're in the military, then hell yeah you deserve free college. They deserve a lot of other things too, but this country doesn't do right by them a lot of times. Smh

TheLastManStanding01

As of right now America has significantly more college educated people than it needs.  This is why so many college graduates (about 50%) can’t find jobs with their degrees and when they do they are often underpaid because they are incredibly replaceable. Basically college grads are a dime a dozen.  Conversely plumbers, for example, have become incredibly rare and now regularly earn more than doctors as a result.  America needs less people going to college and more people pursuing other forms of education.

LillyxFox

Literally everyone deserves free college

Old_Algae7708

The people who literally give up 4 years of their life to take shitty orders and do shit work day in and day out. Not a bunch of trust fund babies or people from well off homes.

Thatguyj5

The moment college/university degrees became the minimum to enter the workforce, they should've become free. The same way that highschool did when it was the minimum.

Screwbles

Hard pill to swallow: most veterans these days don't see actual combat.

Tastins

I love the idea that people think these NYC protestors are not spoiled little rich brats pissing their parents off with every passing day. No one has noticed that it’s the rich schools protesting???? There’s no free education for these protestors-their parents are paying that bill lol. You don’t see any Lehmann students. No Monroe students. Only the privileged kids from the expensive schools who are on mommy and daddy’s dime are doing this stupid shit.

RougeKC

All I’m saying is this, if education is supposed to be free, collage should be free too. Otherwise, it should be paid for all the way through. You value things that you pay for way more than things handed to you, from a stranger.

[deleted]

Why can't we all just have free college? Why us all other grades free bug college? I swear to God, the right thinks they fix everything but haven't done shit in years, and constantly drive everyone apart.

2drunc2fish

Here's my hot take: I don't think the government wants to make college or healthcare free as it a huge incentive to get people to join the military. I'm not a vet myself, but I haven't heard about the VA being a great experience. I also wouldn't call it free. With birthrates dropping due to costs outpacing income for much of the United States, and the cost of housing skyrocketing, the number of people that will enlist will also decrease. There is also some weird idea that some have that only conservatives serve in the military or own guns. Also if they vote republican the military will provide them with better care. I haven't seen that in my lifetime so it may have been true at one point(I'm almost 40). I would much rather my tax dollars going to people that fought for this country than bailouts for billionaires.

Random-INTJ

No one deserves free college. Free implies a lack of payment, goods and services are things worth paying for.
