The front of this car grew on most people who are into BMW's. I'm not a BMW fan but I like the front, it grew on me too.
The back of this car on the other hand... it's just hideous. It looks ok on pictures, but in real life it just ain't it. 3er and 5er looks way better on the rear.
Convertibles usually have really dogshit rear legroom so it'd be better to consider the coupes in this scenario.
That said, between the two, I'm more inclined toward the E Class as you seem to want something more chilled out vs sporty (which the BMW is). The Mercedes also all around looks classier inside and out.
The best thing to do would be to take the kids you plan on driving around and have them sit in the cars. Whichever one fits them better, is the one you'd be buying.

In my experience, BMWs are a blast to drive when they are new, but they quickly disintegrate into pieces of crap. If you are just going to keep it a few years, not a bad way to go, but if you want to keep it longer, Mercedes is still your best bet.

I got one since march 1st, MY2020 E450 cabrio; no rattles. That one is built in Germany, my previous W205 C400 (2015) was built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama USA and had rattles every now and then. Much less with non runflat tyres.

It’s smooth and surprisingly peppy as well.

I would definitely get the E-Class, but take that with a grain of salt as you're asking this in a mercedes sub.
Especially for a used car, I learned that Mercedes owners tend to treat their vehicles better, BMW's are often driven pretty hard, they are known for being sporty cars after all. The E-class is from a good era where the quality is on point. I myself wouldn't buy the equivalent of what you would be able to financially get in this current era.

Cabrio and there is no convertible on the road that gives me envy in anyway. Knowing that the next step is the S class and that there are no other mid size cabrio other than the BMW 6 series makes it all very special. Its the last E class cabrio for a while too, comes with very good engine choices. The BMW only beats it in sportiness, but the Mercedes edges it in every other aspect. If you want the comfortable ride and luxury experience, get the E.

i'm guessing the 8 series cabrio probably isn't that cheap yet, and a 2-series cabrio would probably be too small, but what about an F33 440i? i think that's a more fair comparison since it doesn't look like... that.
We Have a 2019 e450 merc cabriolet that we bought used. It’s a good car and full size adults fit in the back seat. Regular maintenance is pricey (the run flat tires needed replacing with less than 30k miles on them and it was nearly $2000 and we just paid $500 to replace the battery) but doable. While your kids will fit ok, car seats might be a a tight squeeze.
Heads-up The amg rims are allergic to potholes and they bend easily.

4 series. But you wouldn’t be able to put up the wind deflector on the second roll which is very important to maintain the air flow when the top is down.
Unless you drive them 130 miles per hour without a roof, try that…you should have some balls to do that and with fucking rain, by the way you have no rain in the cabin with the roof down if you go that fast…anyway it’s for real crazy people, I guess women and gay have some balls to do that too

The grille looks like rodent teeth. As a Mercedes man I can appreciate the BMW's of the 80's but the modern grille is just way too much.
