Gamefreak's new evolution designer used to be the kid at the playground who made stuff up about unlocking the super secret character to look cooler.

Love me my cold rock Love me my moss rock Love me my spinny Love me my upside down Simple as

Y2Kafka

I got Leafeon by accident training my Eevee: "Ok, training in the forest because it's around level 20 wild pokes, and because it's night Eevee should evolve into Umbreuhhhhh... who the fuck are you?" I got my Glaceon after thinking: "If Eevee evolves into a Grass type where there's lots of nature. Maybe it will Evolve into a new type where there's a lot of something else. An "Element" like type? Day, Night, Water, Fire, Electric, Grass... What are we missing? Rock? Ground? Ice? I bet it's Ice. There's that one route with tons of snow..." Honestly didn't have a freaking clue about the rocks. Just got lucky.

Peach_Muffin

Seems more plausible than somebody randomly catching and evolving Feebas.

Microif

I’d be down for more of these if they were easier to learn about/figure out. I’m sure most of these are hinted on in random books or NPCs, but I wish they were a bit clearer

Pencil_Hands_Paper

THIS. I am ok with complex evolution methods. But I want to learn about how to do so IN GAME. That way I can evolve new pokemon and see the new forms naturally rather than seeing them in an online guide and getting spoiled.

John_Gamefreak

i swear the only time they come close to this is legends with the dex tasks. some of them allude to what you need to do to evolve the new pokemon. otherwise they rarely say anything.

Anchor38

I think it should be more like Sonic Frontiers Final Horizon that just drops an invincible boss on you that you can either look up on google how to beat or by completing certain aspects of the game you’re progressively rewarded with hints on how to do it Although that was probably a bad example considering the hints you get don’t actually tell you what to do

DoctorYamask

One of the Gen 5 games kind of had this with Professor Juniper telling you how stuff evolved. I’ll never get why no other game did that. Nothing like training up something only to have to break immersion and read up on how it evolves when nothing happens after twenty levels (yes I had a Gimmighoul on my team for way too long, how can you tell?)

Mtrina

Shout out to dropping my DS and finding out my inkay evolved

EcstaticBagel

TIL spinning for 3 seconds with a milcery is an entire sidequest

Y2Kafka

TIL holding your game upside down when leveling Inkay is an entire sidequest.

firefish55

Tbf, having your pokemon take a set amount of damage then going to a random nondescript rock in the desert where that pokemon isn't even found is a bit of a sidequest.

Mimicrystal12

Unironically me

BestUsername101

Honestly they're all good, simple enough evolutions you still have to work for. Except galarian Yamask and its evo. Fuck that.

TheSrr

Aw that’s my favorite evo method what!!?

BestUsername101

It's bullshit, how the hell would anyone be able to guess it without looking it up? And even when you do learn what to do, it's one of, if not the most annoying evolution methods to achieve.

m00njunk

took me like 5 minutes, and the hardest part was finding the rock to go under. I think it's overrated how difficult it is but yes, it should definitely be explained in game how it evolves, all pokemon should be

BestUsername101

Did you figure it out yourself or did you have to look it up? Once you learn how to do it it's not necessarily difficult, it's *annoying*, which is what I said.

ThatGuyAllen

Yes but they need to retcon all trade evolutions. Genuinely the worst mechanic in all the games in my opinion.

eddmario

Didn't they sort of do that with *Sword*/*Shield*?

ThatGuyAllen

No but they did in legends arceus

Plopop87

Agreed, it's less boring and tedious. Or at least tedious in a new way.

Legitimate_Classic_1

I just think they're hilarious

bvannn_

I’ve been wanting to replay Pokémon conquest specifically because the transformations make you jump through all kinds of hoops to get and I want to get them all

Kindly-Ad-5071

How about wildly unique methods of evolution you can't replicate once the technology is redundant? Flipping your handheld upside down to evolve malamar is a uniquely 2010s sort of thing that will remain timeless. I don't own a switch so don't @ me.

ThatGuyAllen

You can do it on switch but it’s a pain

zaneba

Stupid weird unorthodox evolution methods are by far my favorite shit about new Pokemon

BowsAndMagnolias

Evos in Gen 10 be like “To evolve your Dodrio into Doquattro, all you need to do is level it up to level 49 in the evening after dealing at least 300HP in poison damage at night with a relicanth and Wailord in your party. Then after the level up, head to the Gazunkle desert in the Bajookie region and travel to the 4th floor of Kajonko tower. Once you stand under the rock in the corner and spin around counterclockwise for 5 seconds, your dodrio should evolve. Oh yeah, did I mention your dodrio needs to be male with the hidden ability?”

amiryx

Meanwhile inkay evolving by holding the device upside down

mudkiptoucher93

Holding the ds upside down to evolve inkay is my favourite weird evolution method

Ultranerdgasm94

I actually do like them.

Cholemeleon

I agree. Say what you want about Galarian Yamask's Evolution method from a game design stand point, you gotta admit it's pretty cool and also really funny in retrospect.

ArcticFoxWaffles

Every generation I always look up how to evolve a Pokemon I catch if they can but at least try to avoid seeing the new form so I don't get spoiled.

negrote1000

Get terafucked, most of them sucked

SpaceCube00

Fuck trade evolutions tho
