The 80s are never going to “become” MCM. And it’s baffling why you’d ever think this?

ChristopherParnassus

Have you ever heard of sayings like "Pink is the new black? This saying is suggesting that pink is taking the cultural place that black once did (I'm not saying that pink is, I'm just trying to explain what I think OP might've meant, by using a somewhat similar example. What the saying is not saying is that the color pink is literally turning into the color black. I'm not OP, and can't read his mind, but that is what it seems like he's saying... I'd guess that the OP is referencing 80s style possibly becoming a neat retro style, like MCM...

You're probably correct. I don't necessarily disagree with you. But the OP didn't know that. It seems like an honest mistake. OP didn't know, so he asked. What's wrong with that? Just seems like there's no reason to be condescending to someone who is sincerely asking a question.

Prize_Vegetable_1276

Can'r say as I like the looks but I bet it's comfortable to sit in and a great price. And yes, not MCM, more 8os.

squee_bastard

This looks like it was stolen from an Olive Garden

Benjen321

Or from the Golden Girls…

Alarming-Wonder5015

That’s the 80s and it’s hideous

swearbearstare

Chairs too heavy, table too small, not MCM.

Just-looking_257

Items become more ‘vintage’ or ‘antique’ over time but not more MCM. I think OP is misconstruing the meaning of MCM.

leisureenthusiast

Not MCM at all but stoked for you to have a dining room!

Retrotreegal

Empirically the 80s will never be mid-century. Your statement makes no sense; a decade never becomes another decade. I’m really happy for you that you found a solid, decent dining room set though. $50 is a great investment for solid wood furniture.

Tikithecockateil

If this is in your price range and fits your needs, get it.

mkatich

Meh, also not mcm

kingoptimo1

The wood is worth at least $50

Equivalent_Warthog22

Like I’m staying at a Holiday Inn in Boca, 1982.

biffsautodetailing

Feel free to like what you want. However, this is neither mid century or modern and looks like shit.

noseatbeltsong

bridge or poker is def played there

mocoolie

I hate it. A lot.

abundantvibe7141

It’s chunky, clunky and not at all elegant or stylish. It’s also pine. A soft, cheap wood. Can the 80’s be cool? Yes. Some pieces are cult-like. Is this piece one of them? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But it’s a no from me

Cinromantic

I hope you buy this and show it to all your guests

skanktastik

Not for me, thanks. Would make someone just starting out, on a tight budget, a nice set I suppose. Certainly a reasonable price.

Spiritual_Gangsterr

I don’t like it at all. I wouldn’t take it if someone paid me $50!

defaultcubeonVHS

If you love it, get it- but I would do A LOT of image searching for inspiration and think of your new dining room as a whole. If you are purchasing one item at a time, it will be harder later on for your space to have a cohesive look. Also, matching wood tones is an art in itself (as I myself am learning) and that table (just my opinion) could definitely use a good refinish... perhaps amongst other things lol. We also just got a new table, and we made sure it came with leaves, so we can host guests at some point for dinner. These are all things you have to think about. If you still love the table, I would say more power to you- but (again my opinion) it screams early 90s hotel lobby, and not like, high-end hotel lobby. I think for $50 you could definitely do better. There are some REALLY nice sets in my area that are around $150-300 that come with six chairs and leaves for expanded dining, and certainly would be considered true MCM. A lot of times people don't know what they have. But if you have to ask if it's MCM, much of the time it probably isn't. Also remember, Mid-Century Modern is called that because it was mid-century in the 1900s. There are some pieces I think in the 80s that definitely take a lot from some of the 70s MCM stuff, but idk if that applies here.

MargaretSparkle82

The more it’s hated, I think the more I like it. lol.

ChristopherParnassus

I feel like you should keep calling this MCM to piss off all the uptight reddit people... On a serious note, if you need a dining room set, and you like this one, you should get it. Don't pay mind when people shame you for not meeting their own arbitrary style standards.

Coffee_24-7

This is an MCM sub. It is exactly for people with arbitrary style standards.

ChristopherParnassus

I'm more concerned with OP's feelings, since it seems like he was just asking an honest question, and got spoken down to for it. Seems kinda crazy.

MargaretSparkle82

Well I was looking for a second opinion. I could spend more money but I don’t want to buy anything new. I think it has some charm. And as far as my catagorizing this as mcm goes, well yes I know it’s not but it is derived from it in a way, and like I’m more interested in mcm architecture and just the concepts of bring indoors outdoors and outdoors indoors thing and the idea of being very user friendly. Like with the rollers. And I also don’t think that’s pine, but I could be wrong. Continue with your opinions.

PittieYawn

You knew it wasn’t MCM and yet you still posted it because you think it has charm? 🤦‍♂️
