I have reusable wooden ones with a coating on them and some of them have began to mold. I do have some metal ones around somewhere but they blend in with my reusable straws lol
I have never heard of this happening. I am not super familiar with manufacturing of chopsticks specifically but i can't imagine a scenario where a manufacturer would store reusable chopsticks before coating them. Especially in an area that would be exposed to humidity and mold spores. It is way more likely that the coating is cracked or otherwise damaged..
I think (but I could be wrong) that they're implying it might have been lacquered by the user after being used and/or washed, not done by the manufacturer. But I also don't know much about the subject.
I do believe you are correct. As kids my sister and I had reusable plastic chopsticks and they came to a point like a pencil. Now as adults when we go to a Chinese restaurant the chopsticks they give us definitely do not look like those.
I've been reusing disposable chopsticks for years without problems, OP either lives somewhere really humid or never dries them before putting them back into the drawer.
Because they are not sealed, the surface is porous. So they're absorbing all the liquids you've touched over the years. Even if you wash it, it will still soak it up.
you still should not reuse disposable chopsticks, even if there's no mold on em, it's not very sanitary to use them for years
just get a reusable pair, doesn't cost much
Sometimes upvoting for the greater good and/or OP embarrassment is ok. There’s probably at least one other person who got schooled today thanks to this post.
They look single use. Proper ones don't look like that.
For proper ones, after washing, let it air dry. The wood will absorb some water so you let it dry off as much as you can.
Non-Asian who grew up in an Asian family here. Melamine chopsticks all the way! My Travel ones are titanium and Rosewood. Never had problems with mold.
Those are some cheap ass chopsticks that are literally meant for single use. Cutting boards and cooking spoons are different. Do you ever leave a wooden spoon in the rack without drying it?
https://preview.redd.it/qgpohj8e4ipc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=20a49fa964d845d4181d2c7bf6438eb8a513c034
Wooden chopsticks. No idea which wood though. Used since before corona.
Bamboo is a grass and reusable bamboo chopsticks will have a coating, usually lacquer. True wooden chopsticks will usually be finished with a coating, but depending on the type of wood you could also oil and burnish it.
Any time where you can see the fuzz or feel the ribs in the chopstick with your nail is a case where you have a disposable set and it should *not* be reused
Ah, got it! Thank you so much for the info. So if I feel the fuzzy then it isn't reusable and if it's smooth, i can was it and use it multiple times right?
Yes. The smooth means a finish was applied so no splinter or wood shavings and with proper care [dry immediately after wash and store away from humidity] they will be fine!
I bought 12 pack of those.
They're iron wood, named that because it's so dense it sinks in water. I throw them in the dishwasher, you could easily hand wash. They seem to have held up over the years.
Well yeah they’re sticks so it’s pretty easy to make out of a variety of materials.
There’s also plastic, bone, and natural stone (particularly jade) and metals besides stainless steel like silver and titanium too.
Not an Asian here, but did you try titanium ones? I agree on stainless steel, horrible mouth feeling if they should enter, but I keep sets of titanium ones in my EDC. And car. And office Desk.
Though I also have some nice wooden ones, too.
I can second this! I got my husband a pair of custom chopsticks for our very first anniversary years ago, and those beautiful chopsticks are holding up as if we’ve never used them not even once. I was skeptical the fiberglass wouldn’t give much of a grip, but it’s only slightly more slippery than wooden and/or single use chopsticks. I love them so much that I got myself a matching pair!
This usually means that you are gripping too hard
YouTube probably has lots of tutorial on how to use them, but with adequate support from all of your fingers, they should rest somewhat loosely and you don't need much force to pick up anything
I used to practice with pencils and pens, you can do that in your free time
I’m Chinese and it’s common to have both wood and plastic. One is for picking up food from shared plates (usually the wood one cause you can use it to cook too) and another for putting food in mouth. We rarely use metal, but I know it’s a Korean thing. I don’t use it because I don’t want to ruin my non sticks.
I was raised by my Obaachan. She hated metal chopsticks. She called them “joke sticks” because they conduct heat and it’s impossible to eat hot ramen with them.
Koreans been using metal chopsticks for generations.
I’ve use them along with plastic and wood for years. Never once the metal ones got too hot to eat ramen unless you leave them in a boiling pot.
I feel like metal chopsticks would conduct heat about the same as a metal spoon, and I've never had a spoon get too hot from eating really hot soup either.
Your issue is you are using one time use chopsticks. As others have mentioned. Switch to different materials. Metal. Plastic. Or wood that has been coated and sealed and is designed for washing and reuse.
https://preview.redd.it/6r32hvy57ipc1.jpeg?width=1620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d39a4a28e59f0aac2caab865a7bac92ef0052a58
at 10 cents a pair, why would you bother trying to clean them once they have mold
The bamboo is holding in excess moisture. If you want to continue using this kind of material, you might want to try deliberately heating them up (ex. putting them in the oven for a bit) to help dry them out quicker.
ANY unfinished wood is porous. That includes your bamboo chopsticks. They are going to absorb the food, bacteria and moisture. That's just a perfect feeding ground for mold.
I hate to tell you this man but you aren't supposed to wash those they're one time use. Untreated wood and bamboo isn't safe to reuse as food utensils. If they don't specifically say washable or reusable they probably aren't.
If you want reusable ones pretty much any material is better, they make cheap packs of plastic and metal ones.
I have some nice black stainless ones. Don't use untreated wood. If you must, then oil them after washing. Pick an edible, food safe oil like the type used on cutting boards.
I've got some very nice black carbon fiber ones that I think I paid about $12 for on Amazon (for a dozen).
They're tiny bit longer than the freebies at restaurants. They've got a little bit of a rough texture for about an inch on each tip. They can be autoclaved at need (you wouldn't need to - but nice to know you can). They're very comfortable to use.
I routinely take a pair with me to Asian restaurants.
Those are meant to be single-use, they’re not lacquered as others mentioned. If your lacquered ones are molding, you’re likely leaving them in your sink to soak for too long, using too hot of water or too abrasive of a cleaner, or putting them thru your dishwasher, or they’re just at the end of their life. Many reasons why this happens. I use my chopsticks to hold my plants up.
Well now my question is …what about wooden spoons and spatulas ? This has never occurred to any of mine and they are not lacquered. Would coating these bamboo sticks in olive oil occasionally help?
Yeah once contaminated they're a huge health hazard. Cannot be washed. Cannot be fixed. I dearly hope you haven't let anyone eat with these. They're garbage and quite clearly were never properly made for more than single use.
Edit: the only mildly infuriating thing is that you likely poison people in your home in other ways as well. Common sense should have prevented this post when you tried to wash disposable wooden cutlery.
Man that’s disgusting as hell. Buy some reusable chopsticks for a few dollars
Edit: For the sake of being constructive, I’ll say this: That Asian supermarket you said you bought these from is guaranteed to have some cheap, lacquered wood chopsticks.
Bamboo chopsticks are disposable you need to get laquer, metal, or plastic for permanent chopsticks. That’s super unsafe my friend! A bag of permanent chopsticks is like $3.
Bamboo is an extremely porous material and will not dry properly if it gets wet. Reusable/washable chopsticks are always lacquered for this reason, whereas disposable chopsticks are not. These do not appear to be lacquered, so what you're doing is try to wash something that is, by design, only intended for single use.
Those are untreated bamboo disposables. The problem with wood is that it's fibrous/porous. Bacteria and mold work their way in and unless you dry them for a while, moisture can remain inside where you don't see it. Real one are lacquered to more or less weatherproof them. I used to have some from living in Okinawa, jp and they almost appear plastic because of the shiny finish.
The mold is growing be cause they aren't lacquered, meaning that they are still porous, and moisture is getting into them.
These are clearly intended for singular use
That's bc these are not actual chopsticks made to be used more than once. Nice ones or reusable ones have a coating on them as a sealant or a lacquer. These you can just grab a handful of at any Chinese restaurant.
I use reusable chopsticks, too, and I don't get mold. I wash mine and let it airdry on a drying rack above the sink. Maybe you have strains of super mold or something in your house lol. It's time to change that air filter.
If you want to reuse the disposable ones, hand wash them, dry them, and coat them in mineral oil.
Or just do the easy way and get ones meant to be reused
Bro those aren't reusable Get a nice set of wooden ones
[удалено]
that exactly if you want to reuse chopsticks, either get metal ones or lacquered ones otherwise well that's how they end up
I have reusable wooden ones with a coating on them and some of them have began to mold. I do have some metal ones around somewhere but they blend in with my reusable straws lol
The coating most likely flaked off or cracked and water got in it
It's because the spores are already inside the wood before it gets coated.
You should look for hollow metal chopsticks! Then they can pull double duty!
So…a pair of metal straws then
But with a taper at the one end like chopsticks but with a hole at that end too.
You need to go on Shark tank
Strawpsticks!!! Order now for 19.95!! Call in the next 5 minutes and we’ll throw in a free knife capable of cutting through a tomato.
Chopstraws
Chaws
This would be great for pho!
Holy.Fucking.Shit.
Holy Phoking Sticks
lol that’s where my mind went first haha. I could just use the straws
You don’t think the tapered end could help? I guess try the straws and see? I always figured there was a reason for the tapered end.
Oh the tapered end would definitely help!
I think the taper is different on Japanese and Chinese chops. The fine point is Japanese, iirc, and the blunt tips are a Chinese style.
I do believe you are correct. As kids my sister and I had reusable plastic chopsticks and they came to a point like a pencil. Now as adults when we go to a Chinese restaurant the chopsticks they give us definitely do not look like those.
Do you soak them when you wash them?
It would be funny if they referred to those chopsticks as their "nice" bamboo chopsticks
I’ve got fibreglass ones those are great, seriously OP, do yourself a favour and get chopsticks that are actually good
I've been reusing disposable chopsticks for years without problems, OP either lives somewhere really humid or never dries them before putting them back into the drawer.
Because they are not sealed, the surface is porous. So they're absorbing all the liquids you've touched over the years. Even if you wash it, it will still soak it up.
you still should not reuse disposable chopsticks, even if there's no mold on em, it's not very sanitary to use them for years just get a reusable pair, doesn't cost much
Yeahhhh... these are porous... tiny little pieces of bacteria love to hang out and multiply there.
Extra flavour
I use mine for plant stuff. They're great for working with small cacti & succulents.
Side note - OP’s toilet paper is giving them butthole irritation no matter how many times they wash and where they store.
I thought this was just me, I should go have a look at my chopsticks
They would also like to know what kind of latex conditioner to use to have condoms last more than a week.
I nearly choked when I read that. Fantastic way to ask for advice lol. Tell op to install a bidet or use baby wipes.
'Why is my non treated wood not waterproof?'
How does a post of someone washing disposable chopsticks get 2200+ likes? Are a lot of people trying to do this and needed an answer? Bizarre
I upvoted it because OP is an idiot
Well that makes a little more sense
Sometimes upvoting for the greater good and/or OP embarrassment is ok. There’s probably at least one other person who got schooled today thanks to this post.
They look single use. Proper ones don't look like that. For proper ones, after washing, let it air dry. The wood will absorb some water so you let it dry off as much as you can.
OP thought they’d discovered a new life hack.
“They’re bamboo!!1”
OP has been bamboo..zled…
Asian here Just use metal chopsticks Bamboo chopsticks are usually for one time use
Asian here Even my non asian friends know that using bamboo chopsticks more than once is fucking disgusting
Non-Asian who grew up in an Asian family here. Melamine chopsticks all the way! My Travel ones are titanium and Rosewood. Never had problems with mold.
Non Asian who grew up in a non Asian home here. Metal chopsticks are holy
Actually the bamboo ones are holey, thats the problem with them
Haha fuck you take my God damn Internet points
I love my melamine ones too! Durable, light, heat-resistant, and they come in so many colors and patterns!
Non Asian white familied person here. Eww using one use chopsticks is gross.
My wooden cooking spoons and cutting board are all bamboo, is it disgusting to reuse my cooking spoons and cutting board?
Those are some cheap ass chopsticks that are literally meant for single use. Cutting boards and cooking spoons are different. Do you ever leave a wooden spoon in the rack without drying it?
Asian here. I don’t like metal chopsticks. But bamboo chopsticks suck.
What do you use then ?
https://preview.redd.it/qgpohj8e4ipc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=20a49fa964d845d4181d2c7bf6438eb8a513c034 Wooden chopsticks. No idea which wood though. Used since before corona.
Ah, okay. I accidentally thought bamboo fell under the same category as wood lol
If you feel the fuzzy it must be scuzzy. If you feel the smooth you may reuse. I'll be using this from now on
This town ain’t big enough for the both of us
Listen here you little shit, if you dont stop cosplaying as me, and get your own style I'm calling the fashion police
I bought 12 pack of those. They're iron wood, named that because it's so dense it sinks in water. I throw them in the dishwasher, you could easily hand wash. They seem to have held up over the years.
We've been using the same wooden chopsticks as long as I can remember, even visiting home at 24 they're still the same. They last forever
Looks like you whittled them out of drift wood
Hands
Hi, South Asia!
Nice
I like melamine chopsticks, but you should never put them in the microwave (not that many people do, but just to say it).
You can get wooden ones that arnt bamboo. Dont know how much more risistant to mould they are though. Or there is plastic if you wanna go that route
They are also made with plastic, fiberglass, and porcelain as well.
Ceramic or laquered wood are options over metal.
There are ceramic chopsticks?🤯
Well yeah they’re sticks so it’s pretty easy to make out of a variety of materials. There’s also plastic, bone, and natural stone (particularly jade) and metals besides stainless steel like silver and titanium too.
Not an Asian here, but did you try titanium ones? I agree on stainless steel, horrible mouth feeling if they should enter, but I keep sets of titanium ones in my EDC. And car. And office Desk. Though I also have some nice wooden ones, too.
Metal chopsticks are so convenient to wash and store but they do not handle or grip as well in my experience
Seriously, everything just slides off. Especially noodles. Wooden all the way.
Try fiberglass chopsticks. Best set of chopsticks I've ever had.
It might be just my lack of skill but I find metal chopsticks harder to use. Feel like they slip more easily and do not have grip like wooden ones.
This usually means that you are gripping too hard YouTube probably has lots of tutorial on how to use them, but with adequate support from all of your fingers, they should rest somewhat loosely and you don't need much force to pick up anything I used to practice with pencils and pens, you can do that in your free time

Metal get hot... I love fiberglass!
“Hot Chopsticks”. Good name for an Asian metal band!
I'm white and recommend plastic. I have plastic chopsticks with coarse texture.
Your issue is you are using one time use chopsticks. As others have mentioned. Switch to different materials. Metal. Plastic. Or wood that has been coated and sealed and is designed for washing and reuse.
…yeah… you’re buying single-use disposable chopsticks. You’re the one that’s mildly infuriating 😂
Disposable chopsticks aren't meant to washed and be reused.
Who the actual fuck told you to reuse bamboo chopsticks?
Bamboo are for one time use Stainless chopsticks are the best
Unfinished bamboo are for one time use You can get lacquered bamboo sticks that can be washed.
I just commented that these look like raw wood and need a finish. If I’d scrolled a bit more I’d have seen your comment 🤦🏻♂️
But only washed by hand! Wooden utensils should never go in the dishwasher.
I like the titanium ones, they don't get hot and burn in ramen!
And they are fucking titanium so that’s cool
Are those lighter than the stainless steel ones, do you think? My main issue with metal chopsticks is how heavy they are
They will be much lighter in weight. It’ll feel like aluminum in weight almost, but with less heat conductivity
Switch to a different material. Like plastic or metal. This seems like a very easy problem to remedy. You just stop using bamboo chopsticks.
https://preview.redd.it/6r32hvy57ipc1.jpeg?width=1620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d39a4a28e59f0aac2caab865a7bac92ef0052a58 at 10 cents a pair, why would you bother trying to clean them once they have mold
Porous surface develops mold after use: news at 11. 😂
The number of people trying to offer tips to remedy instead of just saying to replace them is disappointing……..
Those are disposeable chopsticks yo. Just go on like, amazon or something, and get some cheap metal or plastic ones.
As everyone has said, these are for one use and are then tossed. Buy yourself a nice set of lacquered or metal chopsticks.
No matter how many times I wash my paper plates they just get soggy and disintegrate
The bamboo is holding in excess moisture. If you want to continue using this kind of material, you might want to try deliberately heating them up (ex. putting them in the oven for a bit) to help dry them out quicker.
You aren't supposed to wash and reuse disposable bamboo chopsticks...
ANY unfinished wood is porous. That includes your bamboo chopsticks. They are going to absorb the food, bacteria and moisture. That's just a perfect feeding ground for mold.
Things to not save and re use: Toilet paper Dental floss Disposable bamboo chopsticks
but i been folding my toilet tissue to reuse later.
That’s fine if it’s lacquered.
i dont think its lacquered because the sheets are pretty rough and gritty.
**OP's next post:** "why are condoms so hard to re-roll after cleaning and re-lubing them?"
I thought just turned them inside out after each use?
TIL I've been doing it wrong
OP has never thought critically a single moment in his life
Right? Lmao I’d be extremely infuriated at the idiots who never taught me to use my brain.
Quit being so Frugal those are disposable.
Then get real ones. The fuck?
Op doing the equivalent of keeping those plastic spoons you get at fast food places
That feel when the single use item is single use…
I have some nice black stainless ones. Don't use untreated wood. If you must, then oil them after washing. Pick an edible, food safe oil like the type used on cutting boards.
No matter how many times I try to wash my toilet paper so I can reuse it, it always disintegrates.
Dude..your using single use chopsticks. They're going to grow mold, since they're single use.
i mean, yeah. they’re meant for one time use. they’re wood and highly permeable.
Get metal chopsticks, they're superior
I've got some very nice black carbon fiber ones that I think I paid about $12 for on Amazon (for a dozen). They're tiny bit longer than the freebies at restaurants. They've got a little bit of a rough texture for about an inch on each tip. They can be autoclaved at need (you wouldn't need to - but nice to know you can). They're very comfortable to use. I routinely take a pair with me to Asian restaurants.
I bought very similar ones from Amazon and can testify that they work well, grab food, and clean easily as well as lasting a long time.
Maybe you should throw them away because it's a one time use chopsticks
Throw these away. This is nasty!
Your post is mildly infuriating to me that you think this is mildly infuriating. Take my stupid upvote, and buy some nice chopsticks with it.
get some metal ones.
Uh, these are definitely disposable chopsticks. There's no finish on them.
Why are the disposable chopsticks I hoard from the local Hunan Wok getting moldy after being drenched in water?...
Your sticks aren't reusable. Reusable ones often have a coating that prevent water from penetrating deep into the wood.
moldlyinfuriating
Reusable ones are usually lacquered
Those are single-use chopsticks.
What you have here is not bamboo. It's cheap disposable wood, typically balsa wood. Meant to only use once.
Those aren't reusable, my man.
Meant to be used only once. Toss em out
Wood soaks up crap and then bacteria and or mold grows. Dont reuse wooden chopsticks, as many comments here suggest get metal ones instead.
treated wooden chopsticks are perfectly fine to wash and re-use, bamboo is not wood.
These are one use chopsticks, dude, throw them away, for the love of god.
pretty sure you’re not supposed to reuse ones like that
Because those are disposable
Well now my question is …what about wooden spoons and spatulas ? This has never occurred to any of mine and they are not lacquered. Would coating these bamboo sticks in olive oil occasionally help?
These are throw aways, I have a set of good ones that are made from carved bone and they're engraved they're heavy and feel like stone
Sorry OP, thats just how wood works. Liquid soaks into it and it locks it in, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria/mold.
Can store them in salt. It will remove the moisture feeding the mold. It also gives them a pleasant salty taste when eating with them.
Buy some reusable chopsticks for a few dollars Edit: For the sake of being constructive, I’ll say this: That Asian supermarket you said you bought these from is guaranteed to have some cheap, lacquered wood chopsticks.
My brother those look like they’re for takeout
Bamboo chopsticks are disposable you need to get laquer, metal, or plastic for permanent chopsticks. That’s super unsafe my friend! A bag of permanent chopsticks is like $3.
![gif](giphy|l4FGnnlIQslHkOPaU|downsized)
I have never seen so many replies in a thread saying the exact same thing.
Where do you live? I have a ton of chopsticks and have never experienced this. Are you in a really humid climate?
Bamboo is an extremely porous material and will not dry properly if it gets wet. Reusable/washable chopsticks are always lacquered for this reason, whereas disposable chopsticks are not. These do not appear to be lacquered, so what you're doing is try to wash something that is, by design, only intended for single use.
They're usually lacquered if they're made to be reused.. bamboo is too porous n retains bacteria js
Yes those are cheap disposable ones. By ones that are actually finished (like glossy) and meant to be reusable.
Had same problem. These are one time use, so need other type of chopsticks or just dry it well after washing and put in plastic bag.
Use metal or plastic. I have plastic chopsticks that haven’t molded in the 5 years I’ve had them.
I’m just a guy from Oregon but I use chopsticks depending on the dish. I’ve got a few sets of lacquered wood and they’ve been great for years.
Bamboo absorbs moisture and orders from the air. Use metal chopsticks or the plastic ones with lights in them.
Bamboo is a plant. Chopsticks are made of dead plant. There's no way to avoid them getting moldy. These are single use chop sticks.
These are the single use ones that you break in two. You should invest in reusable ones. These ones are designed to breakdown
Of course... They're single use chopsticks. They're unfinished. Not designed to come into contact with water (outside of eating one meal)
1. Get yourself some nice melamine chopsticks. 2. If you don't want those soak them in vinegar.
Those are single use, not meant to be washed and used again
It is mildly infuriating that someone out there is trying to wash and reuse chopsticks that are strictly meant for one use only.
Cause those are clearly disposable
The mould is inside the wood, that’s why you can’t wash it away. Get new chopsticks, from a shop, not takeout
After washing them stick them in the microwave for 2 minutes. Gets rid of the damp.
Those are supposed to be disposable that’s why
Cuz those are disposables
Just get metal chopsticks or polished wood ones
This is one use only, after that is biodegradable
Discard. They are biodegradable and inexpensive to replace.
Why not just get metal reusable chopsticks?
The mold is growing be cause they aren't lacquered, meaning that they are still porous, and moisture is getting into them. These are clearly intended for singular use
That's bc these are not actual chopsticks made to be used more than once. Nice ones or reusable ones have a coating on them as a sealant or a lacquer. These you can just grab a handful of at any Chinese restaurant.
maybe don't use bamboo chopsticks
There’s mold in the core that makes it through the grains, you might be able to boil them in water but only a few times because they’ll deteriorate
Wood is porous, unless it's sealed food will get inside and grow mould
Maybe it’s cause they’re uncoated
I use reusable chopsticks, too, and I don't get mold. I wash mine and let it airdry on a drying rack above the sink. Maybe you have strains of super mold or something in your house lol. It's time to change that air filter.
After washing and drying them, have you ever tried wiping them down with food grade mineral oil, the type which you use on wooden chopping boards etc
Aren't those supposed to be disposable? isn't there like, metal of plastic ones you could use?
If you want to reuse the disposable ones, hand wash them, dry them, and coat them in mineral oil. Or just do the easy way and get ones meant to be reused
Why are you washing and storing the disposable chopsticks anyway💀
Bro thought he was saving money trying to use disposable chopsticks multiple times💀💀
