My siblings and I once pooled our allowances and got a five pound bag from Costco - not only did it eventually put me off Jolly Ranchers for life, but I can’t look at one without feeling my shredded tongue.

Green apple makes me cough too! Some other things in the same flavor do it as well. Sometimes also artificial watermelon. I've googled it extensively in the past and we are not alone.. there are dozens of us! Not sure why it happens though!
It's a slight fragrance sensitivity. You have smell receptors in your lungs as well, so while eating specifically the green candy the irritant gets into your lungs and triggers a response, in this case a cough

She said her favorite was the blue too and would always take mine. We are grown now and she just recently told me that she never even liked the blue ones.
