Love this. I also recently saw it referred to as “closet insulation”, which depending on your storage area is also a great term.
My basement is *very* well insulated…
That's a low amount of WIP for some of us. I've been building for roughly 50 years (Dammit, when did I get this old?) and my stash is in the multiple thousands. I mean, we're talking racks and racks and boxes piled high. I gathered all of my unfinished kits together last year and put them in the rack closest to the work bench... well I tried, because it was a RACK AND A HALF. Some people have a shelf of doom, I have a full rack and a half of doom.
I've been doing a lot better at not starting new kits the last few years but that was real motivation to focus on old builds that were never complete.
Let's just say I'm close to mid-life crisis territory. Didn't check my Scalemates account til now. But it's 649, and that's over the course of at least 16 years, and I probably manage to build between 5 and 15 a year.
SABLE - stash acquired beyond life expectancy.
I have between 100 and 120 kits, though I am trying to thin that down. I also have lots of figures and diorama stuff. Plus there is the Warhammer 40K stuff...
I dont think I'm there. I'm at 315 according to scalemates, but have completely stopped looking at kits to prevent me from buying more. Also I'm out of storage. The last things I recieved had been on pre-order for several months.
129 according to scalemates. thats not counting the 30 or so gunpla & gunpla adjacent kits i have.
around 50 or so are f/a-18s, legacy and super hornets. and growlers.
it's also probably way higher than what i actually have on hand cos i always forget to move stuff from 'stash' to 'finished'. need to clean that up.
An embarrassingly large part of my 200+ kit stash is made up of just three types - Tornados, Spitfires and Phantoms. They must be almost half of it easily

"Finish one before you buy more" I told myself....
6, almost 5 until I start with it
ICM Type IIB 1:144
Academy Oliver Hazard Perry 1:350
SIO Models F-14D 1:48
Zvezda C-130H Hercules 1:72
Renault R-26 Brazil GP
Bandai One Piece Going Merry
No unopened boxes.
3 models WIP – one is just waiting for the clear parts, the other two are primed.
Quite a few figures though. About 15x 28mm wargaming figures and 20x 15mm, then 15 or so 20mm figures, and 3 boxes of almost-complete sprues of 1/72 figures.
Also 2 sets of 1/35 figures where I've only built and painted one or two.
I'll just count my 1/350 ships, that would be Yamato with a Pontos kit, King George V (planning on buying the Pontos kit), Shimakaze (she'll just gets some basic etch) and yesterday my Maya was delivered.
Just 1 actually😅
I know this is hard to believe for most people in this hobby, but every time I had a stash, I felt like I just *had* to finish those kits I had laying around, before getting new ones. I just like the idea that whenever I finish a model, I can buy whatever new kit I want and start straight away on it.
Seems like it’s a rare breed but I’m the same way. I have a single kit in the stash but other than that I buy a new model shortly before finishing one and only get started on it once I’m fully finished.
When I was younger I had about 50 kits in the stash, many in various states of completion which have since been liquidated by my parents. When I got back into the hobby a few years back I didn’t want to have a ton of partly finished kits I’d just jump between. It’s been a great incentive to actually finish stuff and improved my skills significantly.
Yeah fully agree, this is exactly what I mean. If I build 1 model at a time, it feels like a hobby. If I’m building 50 at a time and I’m just jumping between them all the time, they start to feel like chores.
1 actually. I like to work on a model by model basis, and I mentally can't buy another model till I finished the one I'm working on. The only reason I have 1 is because I screwed up the tracks, and I'm waiting on a replacement part from the manufacturer, and I bought another to work on in the meantime.
No idea, I stopped counting somewhere past 150 or so (last time, I rearranged the cupboard). Now there's a few large moving boxes in the shed, the cupboard, and a few boxes of figures/busts to paint.
The ideal number is n+1, where n='current stash'.
I keep a roster for all my different hobbies because I’m a total loon. Currently showing 123 kits, with 10 underway - but most of those have been sitting for years. There’s only 3 I’d describe as active. 77 aircraft, 19 ships, 27 of whatever else.
I tend to complete 2-4 kits per year because of time constraints and just being slow at the bench so it’s roughly 30-40 year backlog, but I’m hoping to up my pace…
I remember back in the day when my average was around a dozen. I used to think that anything more was unnecessary.
Today I’m 53 and I know that retirement will be creeping up on me. I currently have 100 kits (@85 planes and the rest are ships and cars). I figure this will be good even if I never buy another kit.
a dozen of ships, couple of tanks and a hundred plus planes, although they're mostly plane kits from the 70s and I don't really have intention of building them, aside for experimenting with colours and camos
At one point in time I probably had about 50. Currently I have 4. When I moved in with my wife before we got married I didn't have a space for hobby stuff so I sold almost all my kits. I kept an Aoshima back to the future DeLorean 3 kit box set, which had all 3 cars, the first, the hover variant from part 2, and the train/50's wheels variant from part 3. I also saved a 1/350 NX-01 Enterprise kit. Then this year for my birthday I was given a Bandai Optimus Prime (which has been built), a Bandai Mandolorian kit, and a 1:48 F18E from Top Gun Maverick. So I'm getting back into it from almost a decade away.

80 or so maybe? Don't have an exact count.
Great thing about the internet is you can always find someone who has WAY more hobby shit than you and say at least I'm not that guy.

Around 250. 6 currently in various states of build. One on order.
I once heard that while a plastic modeller has unfinished kits in his stash, he will never pass on. I intend to put this to the test and ensure there's always enough plastic for me to look forward to.
I have ~400 kits in the stash. More than I need, but there are still more on the wishlist…. If I was 1/10 as productive as my brain is at coming up with cool project ideas, it wouldn’t be so bad…
Yes.
Also yes.
Very much yes
That’s not a stash. That’s a high current WIP.
Love this. I also recently saw it referred to as “closet insulation”, which depending on your storage area is also a great term. My basement is *very* well insulated…
My hoard is referred to as "my wing in the National Styrene Reserve."
I do also have 4, I think, in various states being unfinished. Usually out of frustration of one or more aspects of the kit.
That’s a low current WIP…
Does not include a shelf of doom!

I feel kind of chagrined about my half dozen stalled projects… Until now! Thanks for the morale boost.

600 or so.
Same here or even more. Lost count, to be honest. How old are you... Accumulated over a longer period?
Let's just say I'm close to mid-life crisis territory. Didn't check my Scalemates account til now. But it's 649, and that's over the course of at least 16 years, and I probably manage to build between 5 and 15 a year.

I'm going to use that acronym. I'm definitely in that category.
I dont think I'm there. I'm at 315 according to scalemates, but have completely stopped looking at kits to prevent me from buying more. Also I'm out of storage. The last things I recieved had been on pre-order for several months.

TIL that scalemates can be used to track one’s stuff.
Mine looks big in the boxes, but I only have 16. Not terribly large. I knew a guy who had 50
I knew someone with 5,000. Left his family a huge PITA when he passed.
Between 90 and 95.
16 I think

25-30ish

That 1/16 king tiger counts as like 5 kits though right?
It's a 1/16 Full interior Panzer IV H. And yes, it has like 4 normal model sized boxes inside.
About 20, trucks, tanks ships figures and all. I have given myself a ban on new kits before the pile is under 15 again
1/35 scale 8 big kits (tanks), 3 medium ones (jeeps and small artillery pieces) and 15 various figures sets.
7
2 planes 1/48 2 tanks 1/35 1 x-wing 1/72
About 300 odd kits and have a resin printer and started to print off new projects 😂

5 one im currently working and and one i just didnt want to to continue and probably never will and another one currently being delivered to me
17 currently. 5 1:48 planes, 9 1:72 planes, 1 1:32 plane, a 1:25 car, and a 1:72 spaceship. 27 completed at the moment
60 ish, if you count things that aren’t going to be built because I ruined them or scavenged parts from them for a kitbash

4 tanks
Three medium sized moving boxes. I'm still trying to de-stash.
all together across various different model types, probably around 50, with about a dozen in various states of progression.
3 but not because I think 3 is fine
About 7... unless we are counting wammer as well then i have about 14 total
Just one! I only allow myself to order a new one once I only have a couple hours left on the kit in progress.
I'll just count my 1/350 ships, that would be Yamato with a Pontos kit, King George V (planning on buying the Pontos kit), Shimakaze (she'll just gets some basic etch) and yesterday my Maya was delivered.
Too many. The only honest answer.
I stopped counting at 200. I cringed. I've probably bought 100 since. 😬 "Hello, my name is Styrene-Addict, and well ..."

Holy s*** these comments. And I felt bad for 7 boxes lying around. I'm definitely showing this to my wife and demand reparations.
Seven? Did you only start modelling last week?
If we are talking about vehicles, about 8; if we are talking about model kits in general, about 70.
A closet…and a handful of cabinets.
Two.

19 kits. 2 1/32 planes, 9 1/48 planes, 7 1/35 tanks and 1 1/35 helicopter.
I've got 3 in the stash. Planning to add one more when it releases :3 1/72: Hasegawa F2, Hasegawa T2, Academy Bf-109 1/48: (to get) Minibase J-15

I refuse to answer on the grounds that it will incriminate me.

Enough that I don’t tell my family how many are there
doing a 1/35 lee, got a half finished 1/72 karl that i keep losing motivation for and got a stuka that ive had no motivation for
Scalemates says 92, but that seems high
260
8 unbuilt that I’m focusing on this summer (Xenogears) along with one unpainted Wing Gundam to be a sacrifice to the airbrush practice gods.
I'm not sure. Between 70 and 100 at a guess.
Too many and yet also not enough.
About 100
1, and one that i barely started and put on the backburner so i could get another kit i was really excited for out the way.
14.not that bad apparently.
80 or so maybe? Don't have an exact count. Great thing about the internet is you can always find someone who has WAY more hobby shit than you and say at least I'm not that guy.
All of them.
I had 3, but most of my modeling tools, and my stash got lost in our move. It'll be a while before I can replace it.

More than 10, but under 100
If I just count model kits and not things for wargames specifically, 7. If I do count all that stuff... I dont know
400ish not counting the warhammer stuff.
None. I build before buying again 😏
0. I get too excited to build them and can't wait. That's why I don't buy or look at models unless I'm about done with the one I have

11 right now, plus 2 freshly built
I already have 11 kits done (2 of them are fucked up beacouse I was so bad at it then) and 9 of them are pretty nice I have b-29 WiP So 12 In total
Over 500
Uh...I'll have to get back to you on that...
There is a way to go until I hit four figures. Otherwise no idea
4 plus one on the bench, I try to keep it low-ish
I have ~400 kits in the stash. More than I need, but there are still more on the wishlist…. If I was 1/10 as productive as my brain is at coming up with cool project ideas, it wouldn’t be so bad…
Oh boy, here we go…
