The one I am currently using came from a mig-ammo solution box...
It was used to line the box and protect the bottles.
I wouldn't buy the stuff, it should be (somewhat) easy to find when looking for it. It's stuff that gets disposed by 99% of the population anyway.
A spongy one? I use the type you get in transport crates (like they use for cameras etc), but i think the bubbles in it are too big for smaller models, so am looking to up my chipping game without using a sponge, so am curious myself to know what other people use.
The sponge like packing foam that comes with some delicate items isn't bad. Somewhat bigger pores, a but firmer than your usual kitchen sponge.

I use kitchen sponges, just cut it into small random shaped parts
I think I've seen 0000 steel or brass wool for this use too, might be worth checking out.
