L’horaire etait deja ridicule.
Comparativement à ça, Après Toronto on pourrais poursuivre vers... Windsor/Detroit. Bof.
"Vermonter" Montreal-Boston-Washington DC was canceled 20 years ago and never restarted. Maybe that's their plan for the Mtl -NY route. Quebec/Canada won't invest the money to build a customs office at the train station in Montreal. Anyways, I still enjoy taking high speed trains when I visit "less developed" countries
Acela between Washington DC and NYC technically qualifies as high speed. In some segments it hits 240km/h but it’ll need to finish maaany infrastructure upgrades before maintaining fast average speeds
To add to the embarrassing state of passenger rail in Canada, it’s worth noting this is getting shut down for track work this summer that will be fully funded by Amtrak.
CN is holding Amtrak, Via Rail, and passengers hostage by refusing to pay for repairs and upgrades to the point where the US taxpayer will take care of it via Amtrak.
On a side note, I’m convinced the only reason we don’t yet have pre-clearance at Gare Centrale is because of Canadian officials, not Americans. Obama paved the way to allow it while he was president if I’m not mistaken.
It's totally the Canada side that is holding up preclearance facility and has not maintained the rail infrastructure on our side. I guess not their priority, after all, who would want to take rail from Montreal to NY or Boston rather than drive?
The service hasn't run since mid-May, but was originally planned to resume [at the end of the month](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/cn-amtrak-deal-service-suspension-1.7208721). Given CN's negligent maintenance of the line I'm not surprised it needs even more time to bring it up to a reasonable quality.
Just a shame that they couldn't arrange for this work to occur during the covid suspension, and have to kill the service for another extended period.
Part of the problem is extreme speed restrictions on the Canadian side due to the degraded rail infrastructure.
The other huge delay comes from customs inspection at the border. Airport-style preclearance at Gare Centrale has been proposed for years but never implemented, with the goal of adding additional services like extending the *Vermonter* (formerly known as the *Montrealer*) down to DC, or reviving the *Alouette* to Boston.
I want this train to be good, so badly. I used to take it a lot. The last time I took it (in the summer, many years ago now), they ran out of food and the bathrooms were literally overflowing.
But I want this train to be good, so badly…
Thank got we privatized CN in 1995.
We sure got a lot more competition out of it...
Railways isn't really something that makes sense to privatize to "create competition". The economies of scale of railway transportation are too important. It doesn't make sense for a private company to consider the social benefits of public transportation. The only countries that got railways right are the countries where railways are nationalized and where making profits is only a secondary goal.
Public transit may be good for the economy of the country, but if it's not good for the profit of CN's shareholders (the largest one being Bill Gates btw), it ain't gonna happen.
Such a shame, if governments want to aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, trains are a great place to begin.
Yet, here we have a non-electrified train line that is poorly maintained to the point that even Amtrak doesn’t want to run their lines on them.
Personally I would freeze any financial support to CN until they update/maintain the tracks to acceptable levels. Long term I’d push for high speed trains
> Amtrak said service would now be suspended through Sept. 8 “as CN continues to progress track work on their line in Canada.”
So OP is posting about a longer suspension I guess.
Absolutely! But goddamit, why can’t we have a railroad system that’s adapted to this century? High speed trains have been a thing for 45 years now and even Amtrak’s Acela trains are fairly efficient and affordable: why is the Mtl/NYC train service so slow and yet so expensive? This country was created cuz of a railroad, why are we so bad at trains now? (I know why: oil and truck lobbies)
Une vraie farce ce réseau de train.
L’horaire etait deja ridicule. Au meme prix qu’un billet d’avion? if they ran the 11h train over night though, it would be the best way to travel to NYC.
100%

Totally agree!!!!

are there actual high speed trains in North America?
Acela between Washington DC and NYC technically qualifies as high speed. In some segments it hits 240km/h but it’ll need to finish maaany infrastructure upgrades before maintaining fast average speeds
California has a HSR line under construction, but besides that, not really.

Was the last part sarcastic? I fly/drive 25 times round trip between NYC and Montreal. I would pay good money if I could take a fast train

Pas de train Montréal-New York pour l’été: https://lp.ca/cbpQUW
Isn't this route supposed to be very long with frequent delays? Also I guess unlike roads you can't divert traffic on train tracks.
I only took it twice, but each time it was stopped for 2 hours and some change at the border alone 🙄
I want this train to be good, so badly. I used to take it a lot. The last time I took it (in the summer, many years ago now), they ran out of food and the bathrooms were literally overflowing. But I want this train to be good, so badly…
I used to take a fair amount when I had an entire day to burn travelling. I had several rides over 14 hours.
A long time ago I took that train during the summer. It had to stop near St-Jean because it was overheating.
This continent is a joke
This lack of competition in the rail space needs to end

Wasn’t this posted months ago?
Slowdown was posted, outright cancellation I don't think so.
It was announced a few weeks ago [here](https://ici.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle/2073828/liaison-ferroviaire-montreal-new-york-suspension).
> Amtrak said service would now be suspended through Sept. 8 “as CN continues to progress track work on their line in Canada.” So OP is posting about a longer suspension I guess.
Article was posted on June 10th so I thought the update was relevant.
Absolutely it is.
Yeah but they said it would be suspended anyway, not slowed down.
You are both correct and I'm the one that's incorrect. :)
The dozen or so passengers with tickets for this summer are going to be very upset.
It sold out the moment the service reopened post-pandemic. It’s incredibly in efficient but it’s still a popular service
It’s a beautiful ride !

Are we really surprised? They did the same thing last summer.
