The best thing you can do is be predictable, which is just driving normally and attentively which you were doing. In super heavy traffic it's nice if people move over a little to give extra room but it is by no means expected. Being predictable is ideal, and again it sucks you had to deal with such an idiot
I try to give a wave to the people who move over a bit for me when I can. I do t expect them to, but it's nice to know they are paying attention.
Also, not to start a whole rant on splitting, but if traffic is moving at the limit, there's no real reason to split. AFAIK, it was allowed back I. The d days since bikes were air cooled and sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic would cause issues. (Please don't murder me)

In Califronia you have to give way to lane filtering motorcycles when you're in the fast lane. In practice it just means you legally can't go out of your way to block motorcycles from passing in slow traffic.
In this case, OP did nothing wrong.
When traffic is slow or stopped you gain nothing by staying in the middle or inside bit of your lane. moving to the side, so there is more space for filtering motorcycles doesn't impact you one bit, so there is no reason not to do it. In Germany (and probably most of Europe) it even is the law, that you have to make space to the right of the leftmost lane, so emergency vehicles can get through (It's called "Rettungsgasse").
The rider in OPs video is a dick and probably would have smashed that mirror either way though.

If cars are too close for me to filter through them I should slow down and stop behind your car, not punch your mirrors off. If you see a motorcyclist stopped behind sure, look if you can give them more space. If you can't then that's too bad for them and they have to wait a few seconds. That's just how traffic is.
The only thing I really want car drivers to do during a traffic jam is to not suddenly switch lanes without looking and signalling. That's really dangerous and sucks to have happen even at low speeds as there are no escape routes

I find it hard to believe there was an earlier interaction. The bikes coming at speed from a distance in slow traffic, not sitting behind the car waiting for space. It's really unlikely that something happened earlier and the the car got that far ahead of him.

This looks kinda like California, where lane splitting is legal. It doesn’t look like you did anything wrong though. I’m from CA and when I lane split, I don’t need to slap anyones mirrors to get enough space. I simply move out of the way if someone is encroaching on my space too much.

You have no obligation to move over but guys like that think they're entitled to the space. CHP suggests that drivers in the far left lane move to the left to allow motorcycles to pass but the only legal requirement is that you don't intentionally block or impede them in a way that would case harm. So you did nothing wrong. Sorry that it happened to you.
Also reasonable people that ride in places where lane splitting is legal understand that sometimes you just can not fit through and it also doesn’t give the biker the right of way. So in this situation for the biker it would have been best to just play it cool and hang out behind you for a minute if you were over to the right too far (even though it doesn’t look like you were) until it’s safe to go around again.
“1%er’s” have strange rules that only they seem to understand and follow. I had a 1% guy ride up next to me when I was on my bike to punch me in the arm because I passed him and I was 2 lanes over from the lane he was in! I’m about to get my first bike and I recently heard about this. It was a video of a line of choppers in the left lane on a 4 lane and the guy recording passed in the far right lane and they all started speeding up and acting weird.

The only thing that you might have done wrong was veer toward the right slightly without realizing. To the biker that looks like you're turning into him. That happens all the time to me, but I don't smash mirrors over it, I just wiggle through. Video looks like he had plenty of space even if you did edge slightly to the right. 280 is an S tier highway with its wide lanes and gentle curves.
It's a little concerning that this was a "suddenly" thing for you, they weren't approaching too fast, plenty of time for a vigilant driver to notice them coming.

Yes! Me too, I had no idea he was behind me. Because he was moving fast and we were going slow due to traffic, I couldn’t react in time to let him pass.
Without speaking about the specific case, on several occasions I've stopped and talked to people who almost hit me, and typically, they never even saw I was there or noticed the almost-accident.

Off topic but, has anyone here ever slapped off a side mirror. When I see this it pisses me off, first, but second I wonder how hard are their hands? Or are side mirrors that flimsy? Anyone done this? Do you know what it's like?
A good set of gloves has TPU material lining the knuckles and the palm. The mirror itself is only held in the middle so it gives easily. The edges are not as nice to hit at speed.
Plus most mirrors fold, which helps with the impact. To clarify I don't condone smashing mirrors, just answering the question
I’ve done it a few times in my younger days, they’re pretty flimsy. You don’t want to be going overly fast when you do it, you want your slap to break the mirror, not the momentum of your hand as you’re riding past like this clown is doing.

Go to the station and talk to as high a ranking person as they will allow you to see to see if they can get their specialist to enhance the recording to make out the license number. And of course, file a report Such acts should not go without consequences, as it's likely the next time the mood hits him, he'll do it again. But if you can get him to know that it may mean a camera will catch him, and with a report on file, he'll possibly refrain himself from disturbing people's peace of mind and possibly unnecessary expenses.
Once I was driving down a neighborhood back street without any traffic, and an apparently mentally ill person was walking head on. Although I went as far right of the street as possible and slowed to a crawl, he continued to advance toward my side of the street while swinging what appeared to be a coat, and as he passed, the coat apparently had something heavy in its pocket because the force was enough to break off my driver's mirror - to a one year old Ford Expedition (a '98) that cost around $250 out of my pocket for me to repair. He suddenly came to his senses then and ran for his life, and it's a good thing, because if I'd have been able to have caught him, I don't know how it would have turned out - I was angry enough to have drawn blood from him or get hurt in the process of trying. It's very upsetting to be made a victim who can't get retribution in any meaningful way. Good luck!!

Between the two bikes, the jackets, the helmets there is plenty of identifiable stuff, especially to people that own the same. Take the best stills and do reverse image searches maybe you'll get lucky with a facebook hit. I took a quick screenshot of the back of the jacket and got a bunch of similar stuff but nothing exact, your original should be clearer before the reddit processing. I suck with gimp (photoshop) but played with saturation/colors to be able to read the lettering on shirts. Find someone good with this and get them the original file(s).

Years ago I was driving in the right lane of a three lane highway in Fort Worth. Late night, hardly any traffic. I see a group of bikers entering the on-ramp so I pull over to the middle lane doing the speed limit to let them in because I’m courteous like that. They accelerate to block me and slow down as if I’m the asshole. Fuck All Harley riders. Don’t give a fuck if you’re Beaner president or biker pastor. I’ll never trust any of you fuckers.
Just to be aware of it, back in the 70s and 80s motorcycle gangs were something to be afraid of and had a cool stigma around it, then they quickly lost a lot of their public image in the 90s and nowadays most riders just think of them as absolute nutjobs who have little other in life then to be part of their little club trying to act tough.

I find it hard to believe there was an earlier interaction. The bikes coming at speed from a distance in slow traffic, not sitting behind the car waiting for space. It's really unlikely that something happened earlier and the the car got that far ahead of him.

This looks kinda like California, where lane splitting is legal. It doesn’t look like you did anything wrong though. I’m from CA and when I lane split, I don’t need to slap anyones mirrors to get enough space. I simply move out of the way if someone is encroaching on my space too much. CHP suggests that drivers in the far left lane move to the left to allow motorcycles to pass but the only legal requirement is that you don't intentionally block or impede them in a way that would case harm. Also reasonable people that ride in places where lane splitting is legal understand that sometimes you just can not fit through and it also doesn’t give the biker the right of way. So in this situation for the biker it would have been best to just play it cool and hang out behind you for a minute if you were over to the right too far (even though it doesn’t look like you were) until it’s safe to go around again. “1%er’s” have strange rules that only they seem to understand and follow. I had a 1% guy ride up next to me when I was on my bike to punch me in the arm because I passed him and I was 2 lanes over from the lane he was in! Didn’t really bother me because he punched like a bitch and my bike was faster and sounded better than his hogged out 88 cu inch haha! It was a video of a line of choppers in the left lane on a 4 lane and the guy recording passed in the far right lane and they all started speeding up and acting weird. Without speaking about the specific case, on several occasions I've stopped and talked to people who almost hit me, and typically, they never even saw I was there or noticed the almost-accident. So, it might very well be that something happened which you didn't notice.

Off topic but, has anyone here ever slapped off a side mirror. When I see this it pisses me off, first, but second I wonder how hard are their hands? Or are side mirrors that flimsy? Anyone done this? Do you know what it's like?
A good set of gloves has TPU material lining the knuckles and the palm. The mirror itself is only held in the middle so it gives easily. The edges are not as nice to hit at speed. Plus most mirrors fold, which helps with the impact. To clarify I don't condone smashing mirrors, just answering the question

And of course, file a report Such acts should not go without consequences, as it's likely the next time the mood hits him, he'll do it again. But if you can get him to know that it may mean a camera will catch him, and with a report on file, he'll possibly refrain himself from disturbing people's peace of mind and possibly unnecessary expenses. Once I was driving down a neighborhood back street without any traffic, and an apparently mentally ill person was walking head on. Although I went as far right of the street as possible and slowed to a crawl, he continued to advance toward my side of the street while swinging what appeared to be a coat, and as he passed, the coat apparently had something heavy in its pocket because the force was enough to break off my driver's mirror - to a one year old Ford Expedition (a '98) that cost around $250 out of my pocket for me to repair. He suddenly came to his senses then and ran for his life, and it's a good thing, because if I'd have been able to have caught him, I don't know how it would have turned out - I was angry enough to have drawn blood from him or get hurt in the process of trying. It's very upsetting to be made a victim who can't get retribution in any meaningful way. Good luck!!

Between the two bikes, the jackets, the helmets there is plenty of identifiable stuff, especially to people that own the same. Take the best stills and do reverse image searches maybe you'll get lucky with a facebook hit. I took a quick screenshot of the back of the jacket and got a bunch of similar stuff but nothing exact, your original should be clearer before the reddit processing. I suck with gimp (photoshop) but played with saturation/colors to be able to read the lettering on shirts. Find someone good with this and get them the original file(s).
