What bike are you coming from? Do you have a sense of the type of riding that most interests you? Barring any additional detail I’d say the Triumph is the stronger choice. Supermotos aren’t generally great for your only bike.
im on a gsxr 750 right now and im mostly planning on just doing some light commuting and twisties/track days. I will sometimes but rarely do small road trips
Don’t know where triumph got the rep of being unreliable. I had a thruxton for several years. Put 50k miles on it. Had it serviced every 10k. Travelled Europe with it. Never had any issues.
Go with the street triple.
Not sure I understand the unreliable triumph stuff. Everything I have read the Striple is a great bike. I see the Striple come up a few times a week in comparisons in this sub and have heard nothing but recommendations for it.
I’d say go ride them both and buy the one that makes you giggle.
The KTM will be more unreliable. The Striple is one of Triumphs best bikes. Still not on Japanese level reliability but pretty reliable.

my coworker said that his friend who owned a speed triple was always breaking down so I thought that it was a triumph issue

I thought I saw something somewhere that triumphs were really unreliable but ill go check some out
The SMC will be worse.
