It's a wall hanger now
https://imgur.com/a/akO7M1E
A lot of people seem to think I actually wanted to fix it, don't worry everyone there was never any intention of trying to ride it again
Actually you can weld this. At least the frame that is.
Source: I run a tig welding shop and I repair aluminum frames from time to time. It looks bad but it can be done.
I already ordered a canyon neuron off pink bike, but maybe I still will reach out to dB! I got the bike during their crazy 50% off black Friday sale a couple years ago
Well of course it can. It was. You need to remove the paint and oxide layer, weld it, heat treat it and refinish it. You could buy a new frame cheaper.
Yea man, imagine that flying at your windshield. It certainly does suck, but if the truck just kept going that’s about as good as it can get for a total loss of a bike. Zero injuries to anybody or anything else.
Hit up Thule and see if they cover this and possibly your car and homeowners insurance. I know you already ordered a bike, but might be work the calls/emails.
Oh yeah you’re right, you can almost see the outline of where the seat tube used to be. Interesting how it isn’t fully welded to the BB shell. I’m guessing the heat from a full weld would distort the BB too much?
That is a truly impressive amount of destruction, I hope you weren't mortally injured.
Edit: I just saw it fell off the car and got ran over by a semi. I can read, I swear.
At least it was a semi and not some small car where someone could have got hurt. Bike probably wouldn’t have survived either way.
Hope you like your new bike lol
Welder here , you can weld it if you want but I wouldn’t recommend riding it , maybe around the block but that’s it , no jumping curbs . Theres this thing called heat affected zone when you weld something, since this aluminum the frame would have to heat treat the frame to remove the stress created in the heat affected zone . Welding the frame back together would also cause a lot of distortion.
They'll probably tell you to get lost. In perfect storage conditions, with no use, you could expect the straps to last up to 10 years. With use and exposure to UV, humidity and temps higher than 20°C, you're looking at maybe 5 years tops.
I used to work for a company that makes life-saving equipment, we used to get claims on products a lot that were past their recommended expiry date, or had been stored in hot and humid environments.
I lost my bikes off that stupid Thule strap rack once. I was in the Gorge going 80 against what must’ve been a 50 MPH gust and it ripped em right off. They still made the trip but I got a new bike and rack pretty shortly after that.
Strap racks are literally all garbage. No matter how much you spend, they damage your car and your bike, and then dump it on the highway. I hated selling them, and talked probably over 100 people into buying a hitch and hitch rack instead. Anyone that still wanted a strap rack was on their own. It got it the point where we wouldn’t rent bikes to people with strap racks
yeah they really are, I knew that and I own a hitch rack. I just thought I'd get away with it this one time since my wife's car doesn't have a hitch receiver.
Hopefully it'll be a lesson for everyone else
u can weld aluminum but I'd do a process called Tig which is typically v advanced would prob cost too much and then by the end you'd prob only have a frame. bet u can't do anything to the wheels lmao
ive rode with welded handle bars cheap chopper, and a stem on a cheap bmx
from memory bars were fine the stem kept breaking
i would not make that back in to a bike tho maybe garden or man shed art
It would be really cool to weld or glue or duct tape that mess together and hang it somewhere. Sculpture? Or just a reminder/cautionary tale? Certainly a conversation starter!
dinosaurs puzzled zonked groovy flag snow ask encouraging terrific resolute

Had a frame professionally welded before, and it broke very soon after again, once aluminum is fatigued it's going to keep breaking in other places. Also unless you get it heat treated welding it will change the strength of the frame because of the heat soak
Insurance?
When we bought our first quality bikes (FWIW: RM Instinct A50 + Marin Trail XR) , I took out some insurance and was told that if they flew off the car and were run over, it would be covered. On the 6th year, I should probably see what it would pay out. In any case, for around $8K of bikes, it cost us $135 per year. FYI. YMMV.
I wouldn't even waste the money on welding... You'd be perfectly fine with a stick or two of JB Weld... Or like a few others have said...send pics of it to DB and see if they might cut you a deal on a replacement... Then turn it into some bike related art..
Sure you can weld it. Make some nice modern art out of it.
My first thought: “Sure. What are you thinking of making?”
Maybe an interesting lighting feature 😂
Cut out the broken parts and weld what's left to make a kids bike
It's a wall hanger now https://imgur.com/a/akO7M1E A lot of people seem to think I actually wanted to fix it, don't worry everyone there was never any intention of trying to ride it again
Doesn't hurt to be honest with db... tell them you want to stay with them and show the picks. They might give you a discount on a new bike.
And nooooo you can't weld this
I mean, you could. It probably wouldn’t be a bicycle anymore, but you could add some metal to it.
Yeah, exactly, this can totally be welded, but it’ll never be a bike again
Make some art
That would be a sick art piece for a shop
It can be a bike, just not a functional one. Bike art a weirdly wonderful thing.
Some freshman level philosophy right here: what is the true essence of a bike? If an object cannot fulfill its telos as a bike, is it still a bike?
I was thinking sculpture myself. Maybe a fountain for the patio.
Not a bicycle now…
Actually you can weld this. At least the frame that is. Source: I run a tig welding shop and I repair aluminum frames from time to time. It looks bad but it can be done.
I shudder to think what your business insurance must be if you’re “fixing” something this bad. The liability involved is staggering.
Yeah bro, Duct Tape
Hahahaha nailed it
I already ordered a canyon neuron off pink bike, but maybe I still will reach out to dB! I got the bike during their crazy 50% off black Friday sale a couple years ago
Is that front wheel still useable?
nah, if you look at the fourth pic you can see it's split where the seam was. it's also got a pretty good bend to it
I have the same bike (DB) and did the same thing you did with the sale! I’ve loved it so far.
yeah, ask 'em to point out where in their warranty it excludes being run over by a semi.
Yeah but be as funny as possible. Like "Clearly this should be considered as an obvious eventuality in any design"
Rice. Put it in rice for 3-5 days in the hot water cupboard.
Can it be welded? Absolutely. Should it? Not a hope
You can weld it,... but you can't ride it
Also, it's a Diamondback. Just replace it.
Well of course it can. It was. You need to remove the paint and oxide layer, weld it, heat treat it and refinish it. You could buy a new frame cheaper.
If you can at least sand and paint sometimes it's not bad to fix stuff, not this time though.
Simply melt it down and produce a new frame from srstch. Very doable job, can do it in an afternoon. /s.
Duct tape should be fine.
That's how you hide the sleeves.
Personally I was thinking some Elmer’s glue would do the trick
Flex seal. That stuff will turn a screen door into a boat.
Honestly only losing the bike sounds like a best case scenario there. And an easy excuse to order something new
it really was, I'm glad no one was hurt and it didn't damage anyone's car
Yea man, imagine that flying at your windshield. It certainly does suck, but if the truck just kept going that’s about as good as it can get for a total loss of a bike. Zero injuries to anybody or anything else.
I don’t see where it’s broken. Can you draw a circle around the crack to point it out?
Hit up Thule and see if they cover this and possibly your car and homeowners insurance. I know you already ordered a bike, but might be work the calls/emails.
Sure. I mean not back into a usable bike, but you can definitely weld it into other shapes.
JB Weld marine Bro - 60% of the time it works every time!
Add in a little bondo for good measure.
I JB welded a hole/leak in the oil pan on one of our work trucks, that worked for 5 or 6 years. It outlasted the actual truck.
Jesus That's a lot of damage.. Bike fall off of a moving vehicle?
yeah
I think the next one that ran over it also didn’t help.
The correct question is "should this be welded?" No.
I wonder what that little tack weld on the BB shell is for. In the third pic.
I think it was for the seat tube
Oh yeah you’re right, you can almost see the outline of where the seat tube used to be. Interesting how it isn’t fully welded to the BB shell. I’m guessing the heat from a full weld would distort the BB too much?
That is a truly impressive amount of destruction, I hope you weren't mortally injured. Edit: I just saw it fell off the car and got ran over by a semi. I can read, I swear.
Before reading the post, my first thought was, "Welded? It look like it was run over by a truck."
So what you are saying is an old strap on fucked you.
Only for Burning Man art
At least it was a semi and not some small car where someone could have got hurt. Bike probably wouldn’t have survived either way. Hope you like your new bike lol
Welded? Yes. Rideable? Hmmmm
little gorilla tape and you'll be back on the trails
Welder/sheetmetal tradesman here. Short ansŵer - no. Long answer - noooooooo
What… happened?
like I said in the op, came off my bike rack and was run over by a semi
Damn, I’m hearing that one part in the video of Enter Sandman. “Booom!”
Tell us!!!
I don’t see how you couldn’t weld it.
Damn. That sucks. First thought that came to my mind when I saw the picture, but before I read your post was "did it get hit by a semi?"
Flex tape
Yes, this can be welded. Just not back into a bike...
I came here to make a dumb joke, but after reading what happened…god damn. Sorry for your loss.
How does the rider look? Did fell of a car
Clearly nsfw dude 😆
In addition to contacting DB, I’d honestly contact Thule as well. Their product failed resulting in severe damages to your bike.
Yeah that’s very true.
At some point companies stop covering stupidity.
Welded into what exactly? 🤔
Struggling to see the crack, I'd just ride on and keep an eye on it. /S
Truck driver wasn’t gonna split the bill haha
What's wrong with it
>Welded? No. >Some ramen and super glue? Yes.
can? yes. should? no
I lost my bikes off that stupid Thule strap rack once. I was in the Gorge going 80 against what must’ve been a 50 MPH gust and it ripped em right off. They still made the trip but I got a new bike and rack pretty shortly after that.
The moral of the story is that you don't use a crappy old bike rack for your expensive mountain bike.
yep, the worst part is I know that and have a nice rack. just thought I could get away with it this one time because I was driving my wife's car
Walking into traffic would be safer than repairing that
Strap racks are literally all garbage.
You did everyone a solid favor. Friends don't let friends buy strap on bike racks.
yeah they really are, I knew that and I own a hitch rack. I just thought I'd get away with it this one time since my wife's car doesn't have a hitch receiver. Hopefully it'll be a lesson for everyone else
If you find someone good enough to weld this back into a rideable bike. it'll cost less to get a new bike.
Man this happened to me last year.. I know your pain brother
Reminds me of the time Homer made his own BBQ.
new bike time condolences
>Nearly new. only ridden twice. Needs a little work. No lowballs, I know what I got.
Nail it to your wall and make up some insane mtb story to tell everyone who asks about it 😂
**Relax, all right?** **My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools.** **I can fix it.**
Aluminum- hard no!!
u can weld aluminum but I'd do a process called Tig which is typically v advanced would prob cost too much and then by the end you'd prob only have a frame. bet u can't do anything to the wheels lmao
Wow. Are you okay?
What happened here
I would just salvage any part that’s still in working condition. Also WTH 😭
I hope you joking
Why am I not surprised that it’s a Diamondback
Yes. And good ol duct tape to finish. Then get a new bike.
Absolutely not! You can salvage all of the components and just get a new frame and wheel though
The technical term for this is... shagged 😂
Pot rivets and duct tape
Nope. How is yor face ?
what are you talking about bro, she's minty
Some kemppi glue can fix anything!
Make sure to put some more air in that tyre, under inflated tyres can be dangerous
It depends what you want to weld it to.
One of my fears is driving my car behind a car with a wacky bike carrier that is carrying 2 or more bikes for a strap to break.
I wouldn't do that
It'll easily buff out
ive rode with welded handle bars cheap chopper, and a stem on a cheap bmx from memory bars were fine the stem kept breaking i would not make that back in to a bike tho maybe garden or man shed art
Anything can be done.It all depends if u have the courage/money/time.
No
Absolutely weld it. Into an elaborate bottle opener.
Maybe not weld it, but you could probably buff those wheels out and use some bondo on the frame ;)
WD40 works like a dream
It would be really cool to weld or glue or duct tape that mess together and hang it somewhere. Sculpture? Or just a reminder/cautionary tale? Certainly a conversation starter!
Wow.. lesson learned. Don't pick a fight with Decepticons on a bike.
Into what?
Will it blend?
Nothing a little ducktape can't fix
Duct tape should be good.
I thought Trexs were extinct
Welded? Why? Don't have a small tube of superglue at hand?
Flesh wound
dinosaurs puzzled zonked groovy flag snow ask encouraging terrific resolute *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Yes, obviously you can. /sarcasm
Are the forks and dropper post still good? I'll buy em off ya... lmao
Wouldn’t even bother. Ride as is
How did he get the beans above the frank?!
Try putting it in rice
With enough time and money. Sure. Go ahead...lol
Yeah, no
Bit of gaffa tape and hit the trails.
Jb weld will fix it better than new. Also be sure to increase your life insurance policy.
Had a frame professionally welded before, and it broke very soon after again, once aluminum is fatigued it's going to keep breaking in other places. Also unless you get it heat treated welding it will change the strength of the frame because of the heat soak
Njet
I think you should lose some weight.
Yes, but not to make a functioning bike.
Not if you like your spine intact
That'll buff right out
Chain looks good at least
WHAT HAPPENED
It shouldn’t be. WTH did it get ran through a shredder?
Short answer, Yes! Just don't ride it after.
As a welder/ fabricator, yes it can be welded. Would I weld it, no.
use mig not tig and it’ll be fine
Did you get hit by a train?
Yes, it can be welded.
I mean, if you are looking for some practice welding specialty aluminum I guess you could try. You are never gonna ride it again though.
Give it that “hawk tuah” it’ll buff right out
FYI. YMMV.
No, this is factory standard kinda fucked
That’s a leaverite!
Weld? Ah bita superglue and duct tape be grand for at least a black run
Take usable parts, buy frame off FB, rebuild
JB Weld, baby 😎 No, don’t do that.
Can vs should and will I make a usable result?
I would not recommend it
Dont
Lol... 😲 is anything salvageable???
Why weld when bubblegum and duct tape will do the trick.
It’s not easy to weld aluminium, I assume you don’t ride a steel mtb, if I was you, I’d just get a new bike
New Lego set?
Could it? Sure! Should it? Hell no. If you liked it that much, get a new frame. Personally I’d just use the opportunity to upgrade
Another perfect bike lamp.
Just a scratch.
You used your "strap on" with your wife's motor and "pegged" your bike. Eww.
Dude , My dad has an awesome set of tools ….
What did you do!?!? Run it over with a train?
No man that’s fucked
100% bro
I wouldn't even bother with taking this to a welder. Do it yourself with JB Weld.
Possibly, but safety wont be guaranteed. Its not worth the risk.
It can be melded.
Truck didn't stop because it probably wasn't a personal one, and if he did stop he'd get so many fines and fees and restrictions.
Boooy she's done 'fer!
How.
It can be welded into modern art, not a bicycle.
Why would you want to?
What happened here?
Read the post lol
How did you do that?
I wouldn't even waste the money on welding... You'd be perfectly fine with a stick or two of JB Weld... Or like a few others have said...send pics of it to DB and see if they might cut you a deal on a replacement... Then turn it into some bike related art..
I'd be more worried about my body healing after surviving whatever happened to the bike
My dad's a TV repairman. He has a killer set of tools......I can fix it.
Flex Seal and just ride it.
It’s dead Jim.
Yo, homie….
Yes and it will be like new!
lol dude get a new bike
Sure, it’s probably aluminum though. Know your material!
How did you manage to have the cassette come off? Both the axles also came out. Seems a bit fishy
