Shakespeare in Love beat out Saving Private Ryan.

djh2121

You can thank Harvey Weinstein for this

VarnDog2105

I second this… John Madden is loved by the Academy though and War films are very much disliked by a certain block of Academy Voters. That is, until THE HURT LOCKER won about 15 years later.

maniac86

Hurt locker wad a fantasy movie with set dressing of war

Ok-Hour-12

don't take this as a personal attack but dude, come on, it's Hollywood (it literally means fantasy in Roman-Saxxon-Welsh language) - at what age you'll just accept even the most accurate films contain some "artistic liberties" that were taken in the name of "entertainment"? me, I gave up at around 35yo, after a couple "wtf this is basically a biopic you didn't need to invent a fake aunt to tell the story"

maniac86

Well when I saw it I was a splider in Iraq. So it was hard to look past the bullshit in a movie so critically acclaimed yet so full of just pure Oscar bait trash. It wasn't a historical movie. It was 'current events' being portrayed I'm a way as fantastical as a shitty action movie

ElderOfPsion

>I was a splider in Iraq What MOS is that?

maniac86

Just random ramblings of me at like 2 in the morning rofl

Ok-Hour-12

I wrote my comment knowing you seen combat and still thought "come on, just ignore the bs" but now I'm thinking "these people gotta deal with so much stuff like PTSD and on top of that have their lives portrayed in a comical way" - talk about adding insult to injury 🤡😤 now I'm hoping more vets point every falassy they see on movies. The least they could do is try accuracy just as a form of respect to you guys. Now please ignore my original comment. I don't know shit.

CookyMcCookface

What makes it worse is that the Hurt Locker was so, so, SO not deserving of that award..

ismellthebacon

Having a female director is probably why.... if you think the academy is picking the best of any category, you're wrong. They are elites trying to make political statements and it's more about what got buried than what won. What won was the least impeachable drivel of the year.

Ccaves0127

Ah yes, that's why there have been so many female Best Director winners over the course of the Academy Awards

bASSdude66

Wish I could've have given you a 100 million likes! That was bullshit × 10!

thanatoswaits

I really love SiL, it's easily in my top 20, but for real it should not have beaten SPR, that was silly

Aerialbomb

100% this, it’s a crime that savings private ryan got beat out for best picture

ADiestlTrain

And Gwyneth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love beating out Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth.

MarinaDelRey1

You misspelled “Life is Beautiful”

bobpetersen55

The English Patient winning 9 Academy Awards kicking off the Weinstein Era of Oscar campaigning politics

cbk0414

I much preferred Sack Lunch

ClassiFried86

So is the family shrunk down? Or is it a really *big* bag.

McRambis

I loved The English Patient, but Fargo was the best movie that year.

Lusakas

Everyone loved The English Patient. Everyone [but Elaine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5qalNX5G94). I have to add: I've watched the movie, and I read Ondaatje's novel. I do not remember much of the story. Perhaps Elaine was correct.

Sean-Valjean

Fargo is a masterpiece, owned it on VHS, English Patient was blah, still is blah

lemons714

Elaine was right about the English Patient.

HotPhilly

Toni Collette should have gotten something for Hereditary.

JJWangtron

Yes yes and yes

TapoutKing666

It’s too artsy for the academy. If a film is too original or nuanced, it becomes “cult” status pretty quick, unfortunately. Or at least it seems that way. All of my fav movies never got a single nomination, let alone win

osprey1984

Honestly she was the only part of that movie I liked. I think otherwise it’s very overrated. But I think she may be the most underrated actress of all time.

kingcrith

Hereditary not getting nominated for anything bugs me considering Get Out won an Oscar for best screenplay the year before. Get Out was such a disappointing, predictable, and over hyped film. As far as horror getting nominations at the Oscar’s, Get Out should not have been the one.

HotPhilly

Get Out being overhyped is debatable, BUT Hereditary was a much better film. It just had that augmented craftsmanship. Detail’s and nuance and themes. It was just so well put together and Colettes performance was A+.

Welcomefriends85

Probably because Get Out is a lot more palatable than Hereditary. Get Out is a off-beat thriller basically, Hereditary is a dark nightmare

HeisenbergX

I vowed to never watch the Oscars again after that

Atomheartmother90

Hereditary is beyond scary. I’ve watched it a few times and it’s terrifying every time. Incredible movie.

ListerfiendLurks

Her cries of emotional anguish when [you know what] happened sounded SO real it was disturbing.

[deleted]

Even the director of Ghandi thought ET should have won

JavaOrlando

Do the Right Thing wasn't even nominated, and holds up better than the winner that year (Driving Miss Daisy).

OfficerBarbier

In 2023 Driving Miss Daisy is just silly

Salty-Entertainer-29

Do the Right Thing is a perfect work of art! 💜

ARiley22

Kilmer was not nominated for his role in Tombstone.

Much_Machine8726

Born on the Fourth of July losing to Driving Miss Daisy is such a "what the fuck?" decision

ElderOfPsion

What's more Oscar-worthy than a movie about a magical Black man who teaches a little old white lady to be marginally less racist?

emtemss714

Michael Keaton not walking away with the statue for Birdman. And yeah Crash is an easy one to point out, it just didn't deserve that at all. Also the criminal underrating of animated features.

Lucas74BR

>Michael Keaton not walking away with the statue for Birdman. I think he said in an interview that he was told actors playing some kind of physical illness win most of the time, which was confirmed that year.

creutzfeldtz

That was such a fucking joke. He deserved it. One of my favorite performances of all time

ARevolutionaryMan

What movie should have won instead of Crash?

Its-From-Japan

The prevailing choice would likely be Brokeback Mountain. It did win Best Director

ARevolutionaryMan

Crash was good not great. Brokeback was good not great. Not a great year for movies IMO.

throwaweigh1245

I saw Crash when I was in high school and loved it. Now I may have been stupid enough to not notice issues others have with it but I remember it being very good

RedApple-Cigarettes

It’s THAT movie, it’s great when you’re young and full of ideology and hope and shit but when you watch it at 30 it’s just corny as Fuck.

throwaweigh1245

Yea I wonder if I should give it a rewatch now as an adult or just like enjoy the blissful memory…

RedApple-Cigarettes

Enjoy it as a memory lol

[deleted]

I do think it was a progressive godsend in that moment in time and very soon after felt dated and even backwards at times

winnebagomafia

That's how I feel about Fight Club.

SplendidPunkinButter

It was corny as fuck when I watched it at 24

[deleted]

Good Night and Good Luck, Capote, and Munich were the other nominees. IMO that's a pretty good lineup *other* than Crash.

[deleted]

Capote and Munich were great.

zino332

Broke back mountain was definitely better than crash…

RedApple-Cigarettes

Múnich or Good Night and Good Luck imo.

[deleted]

Crash was a great film. At least the 1996 Cronenburg one was.

[deleted]

Any other film nominated that year. My personal pick would have been Capote.

ARevolutionaryMan

Huge PSH fan. I haven’t seen Capote, probably one day I will. He is masterful in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead.

michaelscarn1313

If you’re a huge PSH fan and haven’t seen Capote well….you should see it asap

ARevolutionaryMan

I also just saw Clifton Collins Jr. is in it. More reason to watch. I’ll watch it this weekend for sure.

the85141rule

Cuba Gooding Jr. beating out William H. Macy. Ridiculous.

Olama

Damn how is he gonna pay for his kids college tuitions?

Same-Excuse8787

1978: Annie Hall over Star Wars 1980: Kramer vs Kramer over Apocalypse Now 1981: Ordinary People over Raging Bull 1982: Chariots of Fire over Raiders Of The Lost Ark

michaelscarn1313

Annie Hall over Star Wars I would not consider a mistake

fallout-crawlout

A movie for adults about human experience? Instead of laser sword pew pews? In MY Oscars?

Same-Excuse8787

Isn’t this the great thing about movies? You can see it your way and have your preferences, and I can have mine.

michaelscarn1313

Absolutely. Edit: and I love the original trilogy. Return is one of my first memories in the movie theater. So honestly I get where you’re coming from.

GoldAd9127

I love raging bull

duecesbutt

Yeah, that 1982 was a travesty

freetotebag

nah man Star Wars is fun and all but Annie Hall ripped no contest

DARTHKINDNESS

One I still am pissed about is Leo getting ghosted for Gilbert Grape. That was an outstanding acting job.

ilovelamp408

I always thank Crash for introducing me to Thandie Newton. That woman is crazy attractive.

Max_Cherry_

Check out Rock’n’Rolla if you haven’t already.

ilovelamp408

Been years since I've seen it, I've probably forgotten most of it so I might take you up on that. I think Guy Ritchie just put something new out on Prime video too. Maybe I'll do a Guy Ritchie double feature?

Max_Cherry_

Sounds like a good time!

Hot-Challenge8656

Gridlock'd is worth a view, too.

mrwaltwhiteguy

Or *Gridlock’d*. TuPac and Tim Roth are **GREAT** together and Thandie 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤

Nice-Bookkeeper-3378

I love me some her

Woodchipper_AF

Very sexy

bigparrot29

Goodfellas lost to Dances with Wolves in 1990 for Best Picture and Best Director. Although I did like it when they gave Marty the Best Director for the Departed years later.

Jibber_Fight

Dances is a great fucking movie tho.

OfficerBarbier

With Wolves is great too

[deleted]

Except that Kevin Costner can’t act at all

Salty-Entertainer-29

BOTH great.

Lanky-Solution-1090

Dances with Wolves is one of the best movies ever made

Real_Clever_Username

So is Goodfellas.

Welcomefriends85

Goodfellas definitely holds up better. I loved Dances With Wolves when I was kid. I don’t think I’d want to sit through it now. But if Goodfellas is on, I’m engrossed.

freqkenneth

Dances with wolves is the epitome of the noble savage trope

bigparrot29

Agreed!

ImDoingItAnyway

Agreed, Goodfellas deserved everything Dances With Wolves earned and then some. It’s one of the all-time great movies

myphriendmike

Goodfellas is a masterpiece and also the most overrated film in history.

trini420-

Should have stopped at masterpiece, not everything that is universally loved is overrated

justahdewd

I realize it's a controversial movie that many don't like, but in 1969," 2001" wasn't nominated for best picture, and "Oliver!" won. Who remembers or ever even talks about "Oliver!", but 2001 is still discussed frequently. In the past two years, I have seen three TV commercials that use "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (the well known 2001 "theme music"), don't think I've ever heard anyone use music from the musical Oliver in anything.

Relative_Thanks_8380

Agreed, and Blade Runner upon opening was dumped on and is now iconic and is one of 3(?) sci-fi films on the AFI’s 100 greatest films

Salty-Entertainer-29

Kubrick was a genius. 2001 was ahead of its time.

Ccaves0127

What really blows my mind is that computer monitor displays did not exist at the time the movie was made. Every single one of those used in the movie was rear projection.

HotBatSoup

Oh bubba. Denzel got robbed by Pacino SPR lost to Shakespeare Depp deserved a nom for Blow.

ARiley22

Kilmer deserved a win (imo) for Tombstone. Not even nominated.

Optimal_Dark_2940

Toy Story 4 and Soul over Klaus and Wolfwalkers

12_Volt_Man

Ralph Fiennes should have won a best supporting Actor for Schindler's List

Rhangdao

Didn’t The Departed lose an Oscar the same year Hustle and Flow won one?

OfficerBarbier

The fact that Three Six Mafia are Academy Award winning songwriters still makes me laugh. I wonder if the Academy were big fans of Slob On My Knob too

Submerge87

Jimmy Kimmel hosted and had amazing one-liner during the show about that — “Now, for those keeping track at home, that’s Three Six Mafia with 1 Oscar and Martin Scorsese with 0.” 😂

COSurfing

The Departed won best picture and best director. I think Hustle and Flow was the year before.

[deleted]

Ellen Burstyn deserved it over Julia Roberts [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Z\_gtlKAWOA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Z_gtlKAWOA)

pugs_are_death

Forrest Gump is a great movie. But it beat The Shawshank Redemption for best picture and that was a mistake.

ImDoingItAnyway

1994 was one hell of a year. Seeing as Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, and Forrest Gump are each within my Top 15 favorite movies of all time, I could never pick a favorite.

DiarrangusJones

For sure! That is an amazing year. We’re lucky to get movies that good once every decade or so now

vault13exile

1994 was one of the best years for movies and music

Its-From-Japan

They both should've lost to Pulp Fiction

BigBadMannnn

Yeah, the spider just caught a couple flies

RedApple-Cigarettes

Go wake up the gimp!

ARiley22

At last check, TSR is #1 on the imdb top 250.

michaelscarn1313

Dude Pulp Fiction should have beat them all!

blameline

The biggest Oscar mistake is expecting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences to identify the best in all their categories.

Analytical-Throne149

The worst mistake? Giving simp Will Smith an Oscar after having assaulted the host. The slap seen around the world, and yet he wasnt escorted off of the premises? This situation wasnt handled properly and still irritates me to this day.

JJWangtron

He assaulted someone. In front of everyone. And no consequences. The fuck.

Beginning_Pudding_69

Also the role and movie wasn’t that good. But I guess there wasn’t much comp that year.

TheRealDoomsong

Slightly off topic, but this one always makes me remember the other Crash

jeremyc12

Other Crash was kind of a f’d up movie. People who get off sexually from the exhilaration of a car crash. I worked at Blockbuster back then and remember the NC-17 box being controversial.

Pphhiilllliipp

"Shakespeare in Love" Harvey nepharously pushed his film past some real heavyweight movies.

InternationalRead925

Shakespeare in Love with much worse

Goondal

Life is Beautiful should have beaten Shakespeare in Love

trash-juice

Only one Crash worth seeing and it’s by Cronenberg

SlaterTheOkay

As a vet, The hurt locker winning best picture in 2010. It's a good movie with scenes that are better than the movie but also look at everything that came out in 2010. It was definitely not the best picture of 2010. That still gripes me for some reason.

Lazy-Photograph-317

The Dark Knight not being nominated for Best Picture. And Chariots of Fire winning it 30ish years later… Also, Sandra Bullock’s win for The Blind Side By the way, yes, I agree with OP. Crash is NOT a good movie.

hematite2

I know its a pretty common one, but Edward Norton in American History X losing to Roberto Benigni.

Glowstik925

2010: The Hurt Locker I think either The Social Network or The King’s Speech should’ve won. EDIT: Google failed me in reminding me what the other nominations were! Still didn’t like The Hurt Locker, but honestly it was a weak year. Not sure who I think should’ve won. Maybe none?

LilNikki984

Kings Speech won 2011. Hurt Locker won against Avatar, Up in the Air, Precious and Inglorious Basterds.

Glowstik925

Thanks for the correction! I had to look up the nominees when Hurt Locker won and it was listed there. Either way, I wasn’t a fan of The Hurt Locker. I felt it was a pretty weak win.

SurvivorSi

Hmm out of those I'd go Up In The Air

Wataru2001

The Hurt Locker beating District 9.

Budlightheavy

The Shape of Water shouldn’t have won anything

humBOLdT20

Shakespeare in Love was the biggest sham

GodFlintstone

Jamie Lee Curtis did not deserve a Best Supporting Actress Award for Everything Everywhere All At Once earlier this year.

shaolinbonk

Will Smith not being forcibly ejected from the Oscar's ceremony after assaulting Chris Rock in front of millions of people.

[deleted]

The Shawshank Redemption was criminally robbed of the Best Picture Oscar. It was by far the best movie of the year, and arguably one of the best movies ever made.

JavaOrlando

I wouldn't say "by far the best of the year." Pulp Fiction is just as highly regarded. Pulp and Gump were huge in the theaters. Shawshank took longer to catch on.

Jimmyg100

Shawshank, Gump, and Pulp Fiction were all worthy of the nomination. I could argue against Shakespeare in Love, Driving Miss Daisy, Crash, whatever. But let's not pretend something like Dances With Wolves isn't an Oscar worthy movie just because it came out the same year as Goodfellas.

[deleted]

I'm not talking theater wise. Shawshank didn't do very well in the theater. I'm talking overall it's one of the best movies of that year and of all time. Yes, Pulp Fiction is just as highly regarded, but it's not on the same level as Shawshank. This is a movie made by a master filmmaker from a master novelist. It's stood the test of time and deserved the Oscar. Unfortunately, quality does not guarantee an Oscar, but butts in seats frequently does.

JavaOrlando

I know what you're saying, and I'm saying I disagree. It's all subjective, but I personally think Pulp Fiction is the most important of the three movies. If you want to say Shawshank is better, fine, but I don't think you can say that it is far and away better. They are both two of the best movies of all time, and either should have beat Gump (also great, just not on the same level).

[deleted]

Nothing wrong with a little healthy debate and disagreement over which awesome classic movies are better than one another. I like hearing opposing views. Helps me see things from different points of view. And it's all just personal opinions anyway. There's no right or wrong here. We both love those movies and that's a win.

batsmen222

Both are in my top 10 but I give pulp the edge due to its rewatchability

Lenny_III

Shawshank was a better story, but I think Pulp had a much bigger cultural impact as well as influence on future films.

[deleted]

You make an excellent point so you'll get no argument from me there. Pulp Fiction was far more influential culturally and to future filmmakers.

Greaser_Dude

Holly Hunter winning over Angela Basset's Tina Turner. Kevin Costner winning for Dances with Wolves over Martin Scorsese for Goodfellas. Robert Redford winning for Ordinary People over Martin Scorsese for Raging Bull.

AnybodySeeMyKeys

1. The English Patient over Fargo 2. Ordinary People over Raging Bull 3. Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan 4. Moonlight over La La Land 5. Dances With Wolves over Goodfellas Honorable Mention: Do The Right Thing not being nominated for Best Picture at all.

blac_sheep90

I like Pena's storyline and certain scenes are pretty good....like Matt Dillion saving Thandie Newton after being a legit piece of shit to her.

swank401

Reading all these comments makes me miss when movies were actually good.. when’s the last time a movie came out and you thought to yourself man that was a masterpiece

Raebelle1981

Oppenheimer was pretty good. 🤷🏻‍♀️

[deleted]

Oppenheimer is a masterpiece. Let the haters hate. Some people don’t have taste and that’s ok.

[deleted]

Very true. New movies suck. The last movie I watched that really hit me as a masterpiece was probably Interstellar. That’s the best movie I’ve seen since probably Dark Knight.

revel911

As someone who likes Crash, I can see the appeal for this as an Oscar movie.

RF_Matthew

Heat was completely overlooked 1995

IZNICE

Mickey Rourke losing best actor in "The Wrestler" to Sean Penn in "Milk" will always be a travesty to me

Salty-Entertainer-29

They were both great. 2 of the best performances ever.

daveashaw

The Sting

mebunghole

I'll never forgive the Academy for not giving *Babel* Best Picture in '07.

davesnotonreddit

Michael Peña is the best actor in this film. He was so good.

Acceptable_Class_576

Cuba Gooding Jr. beating Edward Norton for Best Supporting Actor.

[deleted]

Endless, its a garbage award system.

hoesindifareacodes

Syriana was a pile of wet hot garbage. George Clooney won an Oscar for it.

usarasa

We don’t even have time and my pressure can’t take this discussion again. … okay, one: Dances With Wolves over Goodfellas. … okay, another: Uncut Gems was completely robbed all around, particularly Sandler. … okay one more: King’s Speech over Social Network OH FFS NOW I NEED A WET CLOTH FOR MY FOREHEAD AGAIN

SmellyScrotes

2009 was a crazy year for good movies but I still think dark knight should’ve at least been nominated

Bloody_Red_

You know, for as much shit as Crash gets, it's not a bad movie at all. It just wasn't Best Picture good.

Positive_Yam_9125

The Dark Knight not getting nominated for Best Pic, so now we have to deal with 5-10 nominees since then even though there's never that many Best Pic worthy movies coming out each year

Infinity3101

I truly hated Green Book. I was dumbfounded that it won the Best Picture in the year we had BlacKkKlansman, Hereditary, The Favourite, Sorry to Bother You

norfolkjim

And Ricardo Montalban not winning for Khan.

Upset_Application210

The Shape of Water

Huge-Republic8462

Cronenberg’s Crash was the better Crash

Rav_3d

*Dancing With Wolves* was a great movie, but *Goodfellas* deserved the Oscar. *Star Wars* should have been best picture.

JFromDaBurbs

The blind side by a long shot

TapoutKing666

2010 was a weird one Best picture: The Hurt Locker (I think A Serious Man should’ve won) Best Actress: Sandra Bullock (Blind Side) over Meryl Streep (Julie and Julia) Best Supporting Actress: Mo’Nique (Precious) … Best Animated Feature: Up (vs Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Secret of Kells, Princess and the Frog) Best Adapted Screenplay: Precious (beat District 9) Best Original Screenplay: Hurt Locker (beat Serious Man and Inglorious Basterds) ….

DAR44

Argo, total horseshit,The English Patient, Shakespeare in love.

set-271

The English Patient I'm all for epics and I love Out Of Africa, but The English Patient was a hack. Just because you filled your movie with all the stereotypes of a period piece...i.e. wideshot landscapes, dialogue spoken in English overtones, classical music...doesnt make it an Oscar winning movie. The intersecting stories broke up the rhythm of the movie, and at the end of the day, we all knew who the English Patient was, but just waited to see if the movie had a clever plot twist revealing that it was somehow someone else (it wasn't). And just because the NY Times says it's a classic, doesn't mean it's a classic, unless you're an uppercust snob who has no understanding of what makes a movie a classic (even though you pretend you do) and just follow the elitist herd.

post_officecore

Val Kilmer should have at least been nominated for Tombstone.

MyWifeIsHotterThanU1

I love this movie so now what

gabriot

Why does Crash always get circlejerked here? Pretty much every single year best picture goes to an undeserving film. I’m looking at the past twenty years of winners and they are all so painfully mediocre and forgettable. The only standout choices are No Country For Old Men, The Departed, Lotr, mayyybe Parasite, mayyyybe Hurt Locker (Look how generous I am being). Crash is honestly better than half the movies that were awarded in the last two decades.

Whatstrendynow

Forrest Gump. It's not that good of a movie, it's a sappy self indulgent movies for boomers exclusively. Even if you think it is good, there is no way it should have beat Shawshank Redemption.

dark_knight920

Forest Gump over The Shawshank Redemption in 1994

ohhellowthowaway

I think your choice of crash is correct. I’d also point to the Blind Side, Sandra bullock is fine but didn’t deserve a win for that

Leon_Charm

The shape of water

Relative_Thanks_8380

There are a few. Titanic (I know , made tons of money and tragic-romance IS Hollywood) beating out L A Confidential is a shame.

ADAMracecarDRIVER

The Oscars are shit and a waste of time.

Raebelle1981

I actually really like Crash. 😂😂😂

Sososkitso

I’m with you. I Havnt watched it in decades. But I remember really loving how the movie played against all my internal stereotypes that at the time I didn’t realize were really peaking their way into my world view. I don’t wanna say it changed me. But it certainly kinda helped me understand how that sorta thing works. At least that was my take away at the time. I mean it was almost 20 years ago wasn’t it? Idk I was a dumb 20 something year old so I might be misremembering it’s importance lol

jeffmartin47

E.T. losing to Ghandi.

Much_Machine8726

Richard Attenborough actually agreed with this, this is actually why he was cast as John Hammond in Jurassic Park.

thuper-thexy

Probably not the worst robbery ever but I thought everything everywhere at once was terrible

PerpetualConnection

I had an art prompt to draw a facial expression from an emotion picked out of a hat. I got Anguish, they asked us to think about a time where we felt or saw this emotion. My mom loved this movie, and I immediately thought about the scene from the cover. I pulled it up on my CRT and traced it on paper and touched it up. My drawing was hung up in that room until I graduated. I'll always remember Michael Peña for this role. Such a cool scene.

nicknacc

In 2007 Transformers lost best special effects to The Golden Compass. There are many subjective choices in this thread. This is not. Objectively wrong, and stinks of Hollywood gatekeeping snootyness against Michael Bay. Transformers was a seminal moment for visual effects, It STILL looks real. Golden Compass is Netflix tier.

crlos619

Dark Knight not being nominated. Roma not winning best picture (just my opinion).

tucakeane

Hereditary (or at least Toni Collette) not getting a nomination.

[deleted]

Not giving Best Picture award to “Saving Private Ryan”

amor_fati_42

Titanic winning over Good Will Hunting.
