Oh man! I remember this being one of the only anime’s able to be rented from blockbuster when I was young in the 90’s. Is this the one where the dude fucks someone in half
First time seeing animated boobs. When Kaori and Tetsuo get busted by that gang (I think it was The Clowns) and one ripped her shirt and punched her in the mouth.
But, the two scenes that messed me up:
1) When Tetsuo is in the hospital and has that dream
2) When Tetsuo transforms into the amoeba.
FYI, it was also the original English dub. I saw the newer English dub and it does not do it for me
Paprika, another Satoshi Kon film.
Ping Pong the Animation, much different than anything else I've seen.
The Thief and the Cobbler, not anime but some groundbreaking work in it.
I know you asked for only one but here we are 😅
Nice list! How about star blazers?
Remember the fad of watching wizard of Oz with dark side of the moon on? I expanded that and tried different albums with different movies. Vampire Hunter D works well with smashing pumpkins Gish. Get high and give it a shot
I used to work for a company that created custom motorized sliders for cameras. I helped develop a solution for a specific shot they wanted. It’s just a “special thanks” credit, but it was great working with them.
I was a fan of animated films before but Spirited Away was so amazing. I had seen Mononoke and thought that couldn’t be topped, but Spirited Away was even better to me. Then I devoured the Ghibli catalog.
I’m still wishing they got madhouse to do it in a frame by frame but. I’m completely in love with the end product, despite a bias for cgi anime netflix. They blew this shit outta the atmosphere 10/10
Anime isn't really a style, it's just regional. I do get finding the modern mainstream stuff bad (because it is) but if you get into some of the oldies or hidden gems there's legitimate masterpieces.
It's a toss-up between "Spirited Away" and "WALL-E." Both films showed me that animated movies could have artistic merit while appealing to a mass general audience.
Fist of the North Star was the first anime I watched when I was like 11 or 12. That was certainly an eye opener. But I think it was Ghost in the Shell that made me realize animation could be just as provocative as live action.
I quite didn't get Perfect Blue, yeah it was nice and all but... nothing 'mindblowing' about it...
What did you guys see in that film? Genuinely asking
Oh, not saying it should be a remake. Just saying it as an "either/or".
FYI, it was originally supposed to be live action.
FYI, Darren Aronofsky purchased the rights to Perfect Blue to use a scene he put in Requiem for a Dream. If you've seen it, you know what scene.
Akira was my first foray into anime. Then Princess Mononoke came a little later, along with Ghost in the Shell. But one film I'm not seeing here is Armitage III. Also Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, and non-anime Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Lots of good animated films during the early to late 90s that left an indelible mark on me.
Grave of the Fireflies.
Yup, except it also leaves your soul fractured in the process.
Ninja Scroll
One of the most underrated action anime.
Yeah I probably saw this a little to early… violence I could handle. Rapey violence was shocking
Oh man! I remember this being one of the only anime’s able to be rented from blockbuster when I was young in the 90’s. Is this the one where the dude fucks someone in half
Akira
Akira proved to me just because it is animated does not mean it's for kids. I saw it when I was 10. Big mistake.
Yeah it would’ve freaked me out as a 10 year old lol

Perfect Blue is solid too though. I love Ghost in the Shell as well. I know it’s not a movie but Love Death and Robots on Netflix is amazing.
perfect blue changed my life
This is the correct answer.
Ninja Scroll.
Paprika, another Satoshi Kon film. Ping Pong the Animation, much different than anything else I've seen. The Thief and the Cobbler, not anime but some groundbreaking work in it. I know you asked for only one but here we are 😅

I realized after posting that it isn't a film but it deserves a mention!
Ghost in the Shell
Best anime movie ever.
Akira. That movie belongs in a museum. Utterly breathtaking.

A Scanner Darkly
That movie rules, best Keanu cyberpunk entry.
akira
I was a fan of animated films before but Spirited Away was so amazing. I had seen Mononoke and thought that couldn’t be topped, but Spirited Away was even better to me. Then I devoured the Ghibli catalog.
Princess Mononoke for life - one of my absolute favourite movies! One of the first films I ever saw where the antagonist was morally complex.
Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir
I know it’s pretty much a cliche at this point but Akira and Ghost in the shell made it clear that anime is way more than just “cartoons for kids”
Great movie. One of the best anime of all time.
Blue eyed samurai. I hate cartoons. That series ate my soul.
Next level animation, too.
I’m still wishing they got madhouse to do it in a frame by frame but. I’m completely in love with the end product, despite a bias for cgi anime netflix. They blew this shit outta the atmosphere 10/10
"I hate cartoons" what're you counting as that? Like Family Guy or just the entire medium of animation or what?
Fair remark on distinction. I dislike most formats like anime and similar styles. Futurama and FG are watchable because content is strong

All Miyazaki is like that. My favorite director!
Princess Mononoke my all time #1
Easily one of my top 5 films of all time. Every frame is breathtaking and the story is so good!
Ooof and the sound track, my goodness, all miazaki kills it
Ashitaka’s theme is 15/10
It’s a Beautiful Day
masterpiece
Millennium Actress
Fist of the North Star was the first anime I watched when I was like 11 or 12. That was certainly an eye opener. But I think it was Ghost in the Shell that made me realize animation could be just as provocative as live action.
This is absolutely the one movie that made me feel animation could be more
It is more, you just have to watch more.
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke as a kid blew my mind Then it happened again when I watched Redline as an adult
End of Evangelion (my all-time favorite movie)
Ghost in the Shell Up
Recently - Your Name
Spirited away
I quite didn't get Perfect Blue, yeah it was nice and all but... nothing 'mindblowing' about it... What did you guys see in that film? Genuinely asking
Waiting for Perfect Blue to come on streaming.
Dirty duck 1974
Ninja Scroll
Princess mononoke, saw it when I was 13 and it completely re-evaluated what a cartoon was capable of.
Princess Mononoke. It's an easy 10/10.
Perfect Blue is the perfect animated film that can also be life action. RIP Satoshi Kon
Lmao please don’t. Adapting any of Kon’s work in live action should be illegal although that hasn’t stopped a few snakes from stealing from him.
Scenes. There are five or six he lifted from Perfect Blue for Black Swan.
I never saw Black Swan but it is on my list.
Fire and Ice. And recently, Gantz:0
Gantz is the ONLY computer animation I have ever liked. It looks so fucking good
Angels Egg, Akira, Ninja Scroll
Yeah Perfect Blue is amazing.
Akira, Spriggan, Wicked City, Paprika
Suzume
Golgo 13
Persepolis
The Wall
Renaissance ([2006](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386741/)).
The Professional: Golgo 13
Not a film but Death Note really opened my eyes.
Not an anime , but rather a cartoon - Spawn

Funny enough, it was this one.
