Paul Dano was incredible in Prisoners

[deleted]

Absolutely. First thing I saw him in and … wow! That whole movie is excellent.

commieswine90

Denis V. Doesn't miss. Everything that man directs is incredible.

[deleted]

I knew Dune would be in good hands when I saw his name attached to it.

DagsNKittehs

Khal Drogo getting a part was sus, but the first installment was excellent still.

TheBigLahey

I have been waiting since at least 2004 for an adaptation of Rendezvous with Rama. He is currently attached to it, and I couldn't think of anyone better. My complaints on some of the aesthetic choices in Dune instantly turn into hopes for Rama. It's like he was made for this movie. Back to waiting...

realfakejames

Prisoners, Sicario, Dune, BladeRunner 2049, guy has made so many great films, one of the few filmmakers I will trust to make a good movie without questions

[deleted]

How can you exclude There Will be Blood

[deleted]

[удалено]

nocomment3030

But how can you exclude Paddington 2

Dr_FeeIgood

You’re not kidding. I slept on Sicario and finally watched it this year. I don’t think I’ve recommended a movie to more people than Sicario. It’s dark, and excellent.

WhyWhyBJ

Easily the best director of the last 10 years

[deleted]

Probably gonna go down as one of the best directors of all time

Snts6678

I love that movie. I feel like it doesn’t get talked about enough.

[deleted]

Last I saw, Prisoners was on Netflix. I hope it gets the recognition it deserves.

MrRoboto001

prisoners is fucking amazing

TheFaceless-

Leaving Netflix in February :( I did just watch it this past weekend and loved it

SiidChawsby

It flew under the radar by many for sure

[deleted]

If you haven't seen incendies yet, I recommend it. It's pretty heavy and an intense journey. Don't watch trailers.

Matt32490

Its one of those movies where the 2+ hours go by and you wonder why it's over so soon, thinking it's only been like 45 minutes. Very captivating film. Hugh and Jake were fantastic, too.

Squirefromtheshire

Even more incredible in Little Miss Sunshine. I straight-up bawled along with him when he learned what he learns in that movie.

malcolm_miller

The moment where it all clicks is incredibly well acted.

I4Vhagar

This isn’t a knock on him at all… I thought he actually had some kind of disability. I didn’t know he was a famous actor

bendap

Yea, hardest type of role for an actor to play and he nailed it.

helikesart

Just can’t go full disability.

Upset-Tap3872

You never go full disability

Emadyville

Came here to ask if this was the poor soul in that movie.

Onlycans69

He’s unbelievable

Bulky-Conclusion6606

i still need to see it, but i absolutely loved him as the riddler in the batman

mox85

He won me over with the baptism scene in There Will Be Blood. His talent is undeniable.

grossinm

He held his own with Daniel Day Lewis. Enough said.

crypto-b

That’s the thing I think people don’t realize…Dano stood toe to toe with Daniel Day Lewis, arguably one of the greatest actors alive, when he was only 22 years old. Man’s a damn legend of an actor. Riddler, Prisoners, and There Will Be Blood - what an amazing roster.

jawbone7896

Swiss Army Man. The Batman. Little Miss Sunshine.

imhigherthanyou

Prisoners

CheckYourStats

This. *Prisoners* is suuuuch a good film, and it doesn’t get the attention that it deserves. Dano, Jackman, and particularly Gyllenhaal are all absolutely phenomenal. Arguably Dennis Villanueve’s best film. It’s dark AF, though, and difficult to watch. So visceral.

leotf

I too love Prisoners. But I think *Incendies* has a strong case for Villeneuve's best work.

Busquessi

IMO Arrival is his best work

leotf

Arrival is such a great movie. Love the short story it was based on as well.

AgelessJohnDenney

For my money, it's *Enemy* But the fact that we can list this many films and all have a case...Villeneuve is just such a talent.

_ImperialCereal_

Don't forget Blade Runner 2049. Box office be damned, that movie was a cinematic masterpiece.

kaziz3

Incendies is most definitely Villeneuve's best work, and I do love Prisoners. And some of his other stuff. Incendies made such a huge impact on me it's truly wild. Sometimes I can't quite wrap my head around the fact that the man who made such a fucking bruising, intimate drama is arguably the most pre-eminent sci-fi/fantasy director in Hollywood. I really do wish I could see more of the former, to be honest.

honore_ballsac

Incendies could be one of the most underrated dramas in the universe. Along with Capernaum (unrelated to Villeneuve)

Trignosis

Dude that movie struck me like a thunder....the emotions were deep...i was thinking over and over about that film Never had any film impacted me like this movie

Cowgomusometimes

Little Miss Sunshine for sure.

MFBish

A lot of people forget that he was awesome in Looper

computertyme

Little miss sunshine

burnt_raven

He didn't have to say a word. He's that good. Hehe

andsoonandso

To be fair, he did say "fuck"

malcolm_miller

One of the best exclamations of fuck I've ever seen.

Le_Feesh

Most heart wrenching scene in the whole Movie.

nervous4us

the movie that made me fall in love with Dano tbh

s0ciety_a5under

The whole cast of that movie shines. They're all pretty amazing.

Y__U__MAD

Everyone in here sleeping on Ruby Sparks...

Old-Freedom-3399

And you can't deny his fantastic performance as Klitz in the girl next door.

No-Candidate-3555

This was the first movie I saw him in!! It was his body they used in the Sex ed video😂

ReallyJTL

Same. When I saw him in Little Miss Sunshine I was like, "it's Klitz!"

Nice_Cum_Dumpster

Swiss army man

brewmas7er

The opening scene of this film is one of the best opening scenes to a movie ever, up there with Super Troopers.

[deleted]

Even more people forget he was EXCELLENT as AJ’s friend in that one Soprano episode

tincanphonehome

Just within this past week, when Dumb Money went up on Netflix and his face was plastered on our tv, I got to point to the screen and say to my wife “THAT’s the guy I was saying plays AJ’s friend with the John Lennon glasses!”

ErstwhileAdranos

I mean, he was in *Looper*, and *Looper* was awesome.

crypto-b

Oh great one!

SouthieTuxedo

underrated film in my opinion.

Concerned_Kanye_Fan

I have a theory that the mud scene was Daniel Day Lewis going super method and his making Dano eat physically eat mud wasn’t the original plan.

mox85

I could totally see that. Then maybe Dano put a little extra mustard on the baptism slaps.

Concerned_Kanye_Fan

Method payback 😂

UndignifiedStab

There were a few scenes in that movie where I was watching and knowing how Daniel immerses himself in roles - like turbo method - it almost took me out of the film. they were so intense

sofar510

Dano replaced another actor a couple weeks into shooting because Day-Lewis was going so hardcore in the role the original actor couldn’t match him and chose to drop out. Apparently the bowling scene got really intense with Day-Lewis actually chucking balls wildly for real (which he also did with Dano and made it into the final cut). I forget his name but he wasn’t a big name and also young, he gave a good interview about the experience with Vulture.

qorbexl

Oh he whips a bowling pin. You can tell he's kind of fudging it using the set, but Plainview was also super ripped at that point. He did make him eat that mud tho. God damn did he ever.

Remarkable-Motor7705

He was great in The Fabelmans too. Man is a fantastic actor.

Mushroom-Dense

He's an incredible actor but that's why I think he was done dirty in The Batman. They shouldn't have hidden him behind that mask and when he is finally revealed I didn't enjoy the tantrum. He is capable of much more than that movie allowed him to do.

supercool9483

Personally, I loved his take on the Riddler. He made a campy character creepy and unnerving. He came off as completely unhinged, which honestly, if your doing a live action depiction of Batman, the villains should be unhinged

trent_nbt

This is a L take. He really captured the child like narcissism that comic Riddler has when something doesn't go his way. He always has to be the smartest in the room and when he isn't, his brain doesn't know how to grasp it, leading to the tantrum you see in the film. Dano's take on the character works with Reeve's vision of Gotham all while staying true to the core characteristics of the Riddler.

AmusingMusing7

Don’t bully me, Daniel!!

TheRealPallando

I drink your milkshake

antiBP

I DRINK IT UP

NJdeathproof

Drainaaaaaaaaaaaage!

Middle-Welder3931

"DRAAAAIINNNNAAAAGEEE!!!!! DRAINAGE, Eli, you boy. Drained dry, I'm so sorry."

lysergicDildo

Yeah you're totally right. There is nothing else left to say that doesn't already say it in those simple few words. Brilliant comment!

drnkinmule

So I might be misremembering the story but I heard he was hired to play the smaller part of his barely seen twin in there will be blood. The director saw how good he was and either wrote in a bigger part for him or gave co main to him. The movie was an all time great because of that. He is very good. I saw the new Netflix movie stars him I'm going to watch it just because he is in it.

jacknacalm

Don’t forget that Swiss army man was pretty interesting too

ThirstyHank

What's more Dano was only supposed to play Paul Sunday, but the actor playing Eli was so intimidated by DDL on set that he quit the movie. Dano stepped up to keep the production going. In the script the brothers weren't written as twins.

Graca90

He's the kind of actor who will appear in a secondary role, do a good job and disappear until the next film. That means he's an actor and not a socialite

Shanks4Smiles

Get out of here ghost!

Rational_Coconut

**Ggggggget Ooout of here, ghost!**

I_Shuuya

Never been able to forget _that_ scene. So unhinged yet he never oversells the performance. That takes true talent.

protossaccount

Personally I’m not drawn to Paul when I see him initially on screen hut damn is he powerful. I think we all loved him and There Will be Blood….poor bastard.

SirBabiez

I will drink your milkshake!!!

MigitAs

That’s when I knew he was one to watch, his performance in there will be blood was only outdone by DDL’s tour de force performance of his career.

Nice_Cum_Dumpster

Yes

Joe_Bruce

Preach. That scene where he gets dragged through the mud and slapped around leaves me shooketh every time.

[deleted]

I just tore through War & Peace where he plays the lead role and he was so good. His British accent wasn't bad either. I hope he keeps getting quality roles

RockiestRaccoon

I think the first time he got me was Lil Miss Sunshine as the brother. Good role! Edit: damn, only a year in between. A ton of growth.

Texas_Crazy_Curls

He was wonderful in Little Miss Sunshine. Great actor

AmusingMusing7

“You’re not my family! I don’t want to be your family! I hate you fucking people!!”

joleary747

And then his apology.

Various_Froyo9860

His outburst didn't mean anything without his apology. It showed his willingness to view things outside of his own perspective. That makes every single thing he said extra relevant.

Kcidobor

The outburst brought a tear to my eye though. I felt his pain and frustration in that moment

lexocon-790654

I actually only heard about and watched that movie because I saw that one clip. Just, even without the context of anything in the movie and just that one scene independent was enough for me to want to check it out because the delivery and performance was soo good.

Never_Free_Never_Me

The fact that he had no lines for 75% of the movie and his character showed a lot of depth was something else

madagascarprincess

I haven’t watched it in like 15 years. Isn’t his first line “fuck”?

Maparyetal

More like "FUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!"

cakeschmammert

And then followed by “FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!”

Thatguyyoupassby

"You can't fly planes if you're color blind." Steve Carrell was also incredible in that movie. It was such a perfectly cast film, top to bottom. Greg Kinnear as a dad with failed business ideas. Toni Collette was perfect as the wife holding it all together. Alan Arkin as the supportive but insane grandpa. And the whole movie wraps up in 1 hour 40 minutes. Just a perfect film that doesn't drag on, doesn't try to do too much. One of my top 5.

Intimateworkaround

I rewatched it recently. Still holds up. Such a great movie

Ginger_Libra

Is that Nietzsche? You don't speak because of Friedrich Nietzsche?

_chainsodomy_

I don’t realize it was him until this post. Mind blown!

Statically

I said this above, but every time I watch that movie I am in tears during that scene, some kid who was a bit of a twat didn't get the ideal career he wanted, and I was devastated. So many movies try and pander, attempt to make you cry; death scenes, loss, heartache, but Paul Dano playing a mildly obnoxous character who doesn't talk being dealt with not being able to follow his dreams is one of the most emotional scenes I've ever seen. One of my all time favourite movies, I'm going to watch it again tonight, and I'm going to cry, and you can't stop me.

GoMoriartyOnPlanets

It was a great scene when he realizes that we shouldn't send our sister out there in front of these monsters. Amazing actor.

Zumaakk

Amazing actor.

TruRateMeGotMeBanned

He’s amazing and looks like a total average joe. It makes him even more interesting. You watch him and wonder why or how he’s so good because Hollywood shoves looks down our throat. Incredible talent. What’s really interesting is I always saw him and put him in the same category as barry keoghan (unique/different talent wise) for years. Guys I will pay money to see. Now they team up in Batman and honestly I can’t wait. That is a duo that will make a truly amazing movie together. Keoghans deleted scene in Batman as joker is spectacular.

Zumaakk

Barry is also amazing! His short part in The Green Knight stole the show for me. And Saltburn is one of the best movies I saw last year.

PlentyAdvertising15

He is great indeed

_Pill-Cosby_

He nailed Brian Wilson and was good in Dumb Money

niftystopwat

Woah no way... He and Brian Wilson had sex?!

quietsam

Won an AVN award

BallsDeepinYourMammi

He’ll always be “tripod”

_walletsizedwildfire

Fuck her for me!!!

Redicus

That was the other guy

turboiv

Cuz we're a fuckin tripod!

biglebearski

Fuckin Klitz with a K

JStarlight66

2 things: 1. He was awesome in Swiss Army Man. 2. He is married to Zoe Kazan, who is not married to me. And that makes me dislike Paul Dano.

dudertheduder

Swiss Army Man, man. Doesnt get enough love. Its everything i want in a movie. Weird. Sad. Happy. Profound. Funny. Interesting. Bizarre. Great flick.

pongo_spots

And the music too.

bassebasebase

I like to call it a musical. That way I have a favorite musical

SlackBytes

They look like siblings

NicklyJane

Underrated and very talented. Was especially great in Prisoners.

PlentyAdvertising15

He was totally great in this role Should be highlited more than that

Upper-State-7824

Might be the most underrated actor currently.

Dull_Half_6107

Cast as the villain in one of the biggest recent Superhero films, and has acted with directors like Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson, Bong Joon Ho, Steve McQueen, Denis Villeneuve, etc. Reddit: This actor is underrated. He’s incredibly talented and is recognised as such, he isn’t underrated. People need to learn how to use that word properly.

Upper-State-7824

No it’s pretty accurate. The average person has no clue who he is.

t_hench

I don’t think he’s underrated so much as under appreciated by the mainstream audience. I think most who have seen his work know his talent.

preppy_h

Paul Dano is the mano

Mental_Somewhere6321

is the hand?

Kelemenopy

Pablo Dand

finfanfob

He was absolutely evil in "12 years a slave". Reportedly it messed him up for a while.

Fezig

That movie messed me up for a while

CrypticPanda117

He made a really catchy song, though

Alternative_Device71

Same, I was clapping along to it and it was wrong I applaud any movie to challenge me like that

leathakkor

There are so many good roles that he's in and he plays such an absolute piece of shit better than anyone in so many movies... But truly 12 years a slave really got to me. That was fucking unbelievable. He seems like one of those dudes that is actually the nicest person in the world, but it's just a spectacular actor. But goddamn if he didn't seem like a huge piece of shit in that movie and make it believable... Truly a great actor

Thestrongman420

That second paragraph really makes me think of Jack Gleeson too. But Paul Dano is really on another level with some of his performances.

philsubby

I loved watching him get his ass whipped. He played a bitch boy super well. Kinda similar to his There Will Be Blood character. Never thought about it.

Free_Citizen_97

My favorite performance is Brain Wilson from Love & Mercy.

dogbolter4

God, yes. He was both inspiring and heartbreaking.

Different-Ad9986

He’s great as Anthony Soprano’s friend when he starts hanging out with the rich girl.

aliencantina

“Rubber Soul in mint condition. This has got to be worth what?”

KensingtonWAP

My pizza never hurt nobody

ilford_7x7

We shall know forsooth https://youtu.be/2Yz8vlXNtUA?si=DSvnbH9yBym0tMNM

TheRatatat

Not a very good bowler.

aselinger

Probably because he is a false prophet.

cptjaydvm

Talented character actor

midgebhere66

Paul Dano for the win 🏆

KilroiJenkins

He makes me want a milkshake.

leathakkor

But I drink your milkshake! I drink it up! Sluuuuurrrrrp!!

Dense_Surround3071

Haven't been disappointed by him yet. His dual characters in There Will Be Blood gave DDL a run for his money. 👍 Edit: spelling

Potential_Sort8143

He blew me away in “Little Miss Sunshine”

Potential_Sort8143

Killed it as Klitz

SecureWorldliness848

what's the one with the potter lad? and he plays a fart boat? or... was potter the fart boat? probably the latter.

MrWeirdoFace

Potter was the fart boat.

Ambitious-Charge7278

Great actor, very punch able face. Would recommend

tstramathorn

Honestly Detroit Rock City is one of my favorites with him Edit: I stand corrected I just feel they looked fairly simiar to me at least at a young age.

reallyoldgreg

He’s not in that movie

tstramathorn

You're right I thought he played Jam my bad. Still a good movie though. I did like him in ten years a slave

CockroachFinancial86

What are you talking about? That photo is clearly of Gene Simmons who was definitely in Detroit Rock City

Jj9567

His performance as the Riddler was absolutely spectacular

Derfal-Cadern

I have to watch this one again

Siessfires

Classic Paul Dano.

lebigdonglupo

There it is

a_mean_genie

HE’S THE SLITHERING AFTER BIRTH, ELI

Frisnism

I wanna see him as Bill Hicks in a biopic

SopSounds

Escape At Dannemora is great and Dano, Benicio del Toro and Patricia Arquette are all excellent.

pinhead-designer

One of the greatest actors of his generation.

HurricaneSpencer

Klitz

StrongAsMeat

Moving up my list fast. Loved him in Swiss Army Man and as Riddler, among many other roles

bunsNT

Not Another Teen Movie

christopherproblems

All around he’s damn good actor. In prisoners, he killed it and 12 years a slave makes you think he can be really evil. Rigler in the new Batman was a perfect freaking psycho. And finally him getting a leading role in dumb money, he did everything right and is fun to watch. Also, this clip perfectly depict who he is and how awkward but hilarious. He[Paul Dano in a nutshell](https://youtu.be/jIDh063jLb4?si=DNsnAFKxIeNIjznj) can be right after two minutes to the end is hilarious. Love his awkward pauses

Third-Coast-Toffee

Watched him today in “Dumb Money”. Still think “Little Miss Sunshine” was his best work.

darkwalrus36

Consistently excellent

Pipacakes

I kinda want to bash his fucking head in with a bowling pin. Really not sure why.

Medfly70

Can't stand the sight of him. Makes me want to hurl. I also know that this is completely illogical but it is what it is.

nosecone33

I see that the comments are overwhelmingly positive so it pains me to say that I do not like him. At all. Maybe I just don't like the characters he plays, but every time he's on screen I visibly cringe. Absolutely ruined the newest Batman for me.

BusinessFeeling7121

I like him but do see him over act a bit

VisualIndependence60

Same

therealStevenMoffat

I don’t know who the fuck he is but I wanna punch him in the face.

_niurka

L.I.E. was my introduction to him. First word that comes to mind is underrated. He is a gem.

flaming_poop_chute

r/punchableface

Rough_Map2474

knew he was great before I saw it but his role in Batman showed me his range and gave me even more respect for him I think he is an INCREDIBLE actor hugely underrated

Krumm34

I always confuse him with Sam Huntington, was about to quote Not Another Teen Movie

themiz2003

Klitz can do no wrong.

Accomplished-Drop22

We love Paul Dano here on earth

ItsBstone

Very talented actor with a broad range of characters

OneManGangTootToot

He’s a really good actor. Escape at Dannemora was fantastic.

CapTexAmerica

Tragically underrated.

WonderBud

Paul Dano is the bees knees, man.
