I saw someone on Twitter say that this is because the production was a total mess and they never did a required reshoot, and unfortunately the child actors have since completely aged out of the roles so the film cannot be finished. That seems pretty believable compared to it being a Batgirl write-off.

ShiftAndWitch

nah just cast the aged child actors anyway and pretend like nothing happened.

Habarr94

Worked for Wet Hot American Summer

A_Phyrexian

Didn’t work quite as well for *It: Part Two*, though.

Derp35712

That was not the problem either IT 2

nimcau2TheQuickening

It didn’t?

[deleted]

I was wondering how IT 2 would deal with the time shift, compared to the tv movie. For me IT 2 suffered too much of a comedic tone compared to Chapter 1(and maybe too much Pennywise) IT 1 had a lot of Pennywise, but it felt extremely dark and filled with tension the whole way...while Chapter 2 to me didn't feel as cohesive.

sunflowermoonriver

The CGI made it far less scary. In the mini series pennywise looked terrifying in a mundane way the movies is a big too unreal.

DonaldTrumpsSoul

Tim Curry’s Pennywise looked like he could be some weirdo dressed as a clown that lives down the street. It made it far more realistic than the CGI

sunflowermoonriver

Yes I did say that

unpronouncedable

Yeah but then they had the awful spider

kirinmay

for me it was repetitious. it was like a book (chapters). she would terrorize 1 and then move on to the next and so forth and so forth until they got to the ending so it was kinda boring for me.

That was the joke.

KaneVel

If F4ntastic can slap a totally different wig on the actors for the reshoots then why not

MaxYoung

Is Fourntastic a different movie from Fanfourstic?

explicita_implicita

It worked for Samurai Cop as well, back in the day!

psymonprime

Link?

peioeh

https://www.vulture.com/2015/08/kate-maras-awful-fantastic-four-wig-a-tribute.html

sean0883

At that point just cast Danny Devito for the reshoots and don't acknowledge it.

ShiftAndWitch

Sheeeiiit you don't look a day over twelve.

Duke-of-Dogs

Isn’t this like the only ethical reason to use deep fakes?

EmilyDickinsonFanboy

Or recast them with the Irishman guys.

bigchicago04

This happened in one of the 3 ninjas movies.

Sorryallthetime

That would be hilarious. 100% I would watch.

So_be

National Lampoon Vacation movies did ok

Odd_Advance_6438

That sounds a lot more logical. As stupid as a lot of these companies are, most of them aren’t WB levels

DBoh5000

Just reshoot it with Michael J Fox.

IgnorantGenius

Guess Netflix needs to invest in AI.

rotomangler

Damn these days you mention AI on Reddit and it’s instant downvotes. If you mean they should do a face swap on another set of child actors, I agree. Seems like a silly reason to scrap a film unless the film itself isn’t worth the trouble of reshoots.

Sun-Taken-By-Trees

>Here’s what else we know so far about Netflix’s The Mothership: >Nearly nothing is known about the story except its official synopsis provided by Deadline. You cannot convince me this article wasn't written by AI.

KordonBleu

Articles structured like this have been around for a while, it's certainly possible they have a template they just fill in per article for different movies structured specifically for SEO reasons, "Here's what we know so far about [Studio]'s [Movie Title]:" But I agree this is probably the kind of thing that's getting moved to AI these days

Janderson2494

I can't stand these kinds of articles, they come up as top results in a Google search, and you have to scroll through a bunch of boilerplate nonsense to get to the section you're curious about, and then there's some generic text like "not much is known about this right now". It is infuriating!

RussianPravda

Seriously. So many articles provide zero substance after the headline

livinforthesmitty

Sometimes the headline is the only important part of the story. Reports are meant to have the most important information in the headline and the first sentence. The alternative is: Headline "Famous Hollywood Star has Movie Scrapped By Popular Streaming Company" First sentence: "Many people grew up watching the films of Halle Berry..." And then you read through half the post and three ads before you actual figure out wtf the article is talking about.

devasabu

I got so mad at one of these stupid articles, I fed the link to Bing's AI and got it to generate a summary instead...honestly might just keep doing it

[deleted]

Probably specifically designed to grab those top search result spots. They read like garbage but are a seo dream.

zdejif

Well, thank goodness AI is famous for its slick and erudite way with words.

Pretend_Spray_11

What's on Netflix's main function is to, as their name implies, catalogue what Netflix adds on a daily basis, so you're right that they just have templates they plug info into. I think their site is super useful but you're right, they have no need to be creative.

ChungusCoffee

Not everything is AI, we have had garbage journalists clickbaiting with bloated word counts for decades

1731799517

If anything, AI written articles would stand out as higher quality than those "we have a set of a few dozen templates we paste together" no-I articles.

Karjalan

Pretty much every time I want to find out if Series X is getting a Season Y the top 10 google hits are the same "When does season Y come out? Find out here" and then it's a bunch of words and ads and burried at the bottom "we don't know if a season Y will come out"

Accomplished-City484

They’re not real journalists they just hire randos to write clickbait articles and pay them $20 a piece, my friend did it for a bit and he hated it

StrokeAndDistance

>Netflix’s The Mothership will be written by Matthew Charman they might want to write it before they try to film it... no wonder it failed

BM7-D7-GM7-Bb7-EbM7

There was always funny editing mistakes dating back to the newspaper days. I used to work in print media back in the early days of “online” and it was interesting seeing the process from the writer through editing, sometimes the writers story was so edited it looked absolutely nothing like the original. Youd start to see weird, unnatural, phrasings like that just because it had been edited 20 times. Could be an AI but weird stuff like that has always happened.

we_belong_dead

> so it’s likely not good Wait, Netflix screens its content for *quality* now? I had no idea.

Angry_Robot

That can’t be right…

DeLuman

another_plebeian

It was the full 60 minute game.

SeveredEyeball

Exactly. It must be really good.

Choppergold

There was an homage Catwoman basketball scene

zdejif

It made her feel goooood.

SamBrico246

I'm trying to wrap my mind around how bad it had to be....

Wazula23

Yeah wait, the streamer beyond Rebel Moon thinks THIS is crap?

ChickenInASuit

Zack Snyder comes with a baked-in fanbase. They knew people were gonna watch Rebel Moon no matter the quality. The screening is probably less about quality and more about whether or not they think people are gonna watch it.

EndOfTheLine00

> Zack Snyder comes with a baked-in fanbase Case in point: you can get a Rebel Moon Netflix Profile icon that is literally just Zack Snyder's face. Seriously. They have never done this for any other director. It's creepy.

Scott_Pillgrim

Lol how is it creepy?

kymri

I watched Rebel Moon knowing full well it would suck. I also got very high beforehand. I also regret it. (Watching the movie, that is. No regrets about getting high.)

Dash_Harber

The bar was there. It was so low no one ever hit it, but it was apparently there the whole time.

KingMario05

Stuber hasn't even left yet, and they're already changing course, lol.

DONNIENARC0

If Netflix is scrapping it for quality it must be so unbelievably fuckin bad that I'm almost curious to see it.

ewest

The studio who brought Me Time to our living rooms won’t even put us through this movie.

ekimsal

How's Emily in Paris still a thing then

-SneakySnake-

'cause a shit ton of people watch it?

ChickenInASuit

Yeah, I don’t think the screening is for quality so much as it is for how much they think it’ll appeal to people. So in this case the thought process was likely “This isn’t very good, and I don’t think there’s an audience for it.”

-SneakySnake-

It's either or both, yeah. If it's neither then it's not worth their time to carry it to the finishing post. If it's _really_ good they might roll the dice even though it runs the risk of not drawing a huge audience, they've done that before.

EmpireofAzad

You mean Real Rob wasn’t a quality pick?

AbeVigoda76

Are you implying that Netflix releases like The Last Blockbuster weren’t screened for quality?

KazaamFan

Shoulda did that for Bird Box also, but I guess that was a “hit”.  I just thought it sucked horribly.

ChickenInASuit

Like I said to another user, the screening process is likely looking for a combination of quality and audience appeal. It’s about whether it’s worth the time and money required to host it - the person screening Bird Box might have thought the movie was absolute dogshit, but they still saw potential for an audience, so they approved it.

Alastor3

>Wait, Netflix screens its content for > >quality > > now? I had no idea. every streaming content have good and bad stuff, deal with it

wmurch4

The quality guy must have just got back from FMLA

azad_ninja

That’s what all the rising prices gets us. Quality control! finally! Lol

canadarugby

For every good Netflix show, there is a garbage dump full of garbage shows.

SilentSamurai

Imagine how bad it had to be to not even meet Netflix standards.

IMovedYourCheese

Imagine a movie so bad that Netflix saw it and thought nah, this would tarnish the "Netflix original film" brand if we released it.

ewest

They don’t want it to be a drag on You People at the Oscars.

BM7-D7-GM7-Bb7-EbM7

You People made me feel so old. My wife and I didn’t finish it (one of the very very few movies I sat down to watch and didn’t finish). Some of the dialog I had no idea what they were talking about from all of the pop culture references that I didn’t get. My wife and I just looked at each other with an “I dunno” look several times before we turned it off.

DatAnimalBlundetto69

The only movie I’ve ever heard of Netflix passing on was Holmes and Watson with Will Farrell, which is self explanatory

Osceana

Imagine spending this much money on a movie worse than Leave The World Behind

ManOnNoMission

This thread is a perfect example of people not actually understanding how movies work.

SirJoben

Ahah was just thinking this, missing a reshoot or scheduling cast can cripple a production entirely. On top of the endless list of other reasons.

rowman25

Does this website have an editor? Typos galore.

game_asylum

It's all bots, everything is bots

MisterB78

AI bots all the way down

riegspsych325

…is this a first for Netflix? Granted, this movie finished post production 2.5 years ago, so it’s likely not good. But to scrap it all together like Batgirl is just a shitty practice that’s becoming worryingly common

NakedGoose

No its not the first time this has happened. They scrapped Inheritance and House/Wives two completed films last January. They scrapped the animated project Ember in 2022 from the director of Klaus

LyingPug

They scrapped an adaptation of Grendel as well after they finished filming the majority (maybe all) of the season.

jessterswan

F....was wondering what happened to that. We're never going to get an adaptation, are we?

-SneakySnake-

If it's the Hunter Rose stuff, the fact the main character is unabashedly a villain - and not the played-for-laughs kind - might turn a lot of studios off. Frankly, that's all the more reason they ought to adapt it. A main character who's a combination of Tony Soprano, Tom Ripley and Daredevil is still pretty fresh.

[deleted]

>They scrapped the animated project Ember in 2022 from the director of Klaus Wait what

NakedGoose

Yep. Was a hand drawn animated film, about humankind's quest for fire. I was excited for it.

Broad_Meaning7389

Wow I had no feelings on the project as I had no idea it was ever in production but now I kind of am also disappointed this didn't happen.

GearBrain

fucking WHAT

[deleted]

Well that is deeply infuriating

flysly

That sounds so damn good.... My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

MrMcBunny

Include me on this outrage. Klaus is amazing. What the fuck.

DONNIENARC0

> They scrapped the animated project Ember in 2022 from the director of Klaus That's surprising, I absolutely loved Klaus. Might be the best original Christmas movie since Elf, IMO.

Colginator

A little different but Netflix has never released the film Gore about the life of Gore Vidal. But that is because it starred Kevin Spacey and it finished production very shortly before the accusations came out about him. Afterwards they cancelled all projects with Spacey including House of Cards and this film. It doesn't help that Gore Vidal had some accusations that he also had an interest in underage boys so understandably not a very marketable film for Netflix to release. [More info on this story here.](https://lostmediawiki.com/Gore_(lost_unreleased_Gore_Vidal_biopic_starring_Kevin_Spacey;_2017))

Vio_

Yeah, Gore Vidal is going to slide hard and fast into obscurity given everything that's come out/finally been recognized as horrible shit.

KaneVel

They fired Spacey from House of cards but they still made a season without him

brettmgreene

>They fired Spacey from House of cards but they still made a season without him Not really fair to fire hundreds of people for the actions of one asshole.

peioeh

Netflix usually don't have any issues releasing mediocre/bad movies, I bet it's simply not finished.

Other-Marketing-6167

This actually happened to me once (not on Netflix levels obviously) but I filmed a super low budget disaster, two years later figured out a way to reshoot certain parts and add other scenes to make it not suck - and my lead actress had gained about 100 pounds. Wound up scrapping the whole project.

[deleted]

reebokhightops

Do you think they didn’t realize Halle Berry was black until just now? What a hilariously daft take.

Scazzz

It must have been unwatchable for Netflix to not release it. They will put anything up on the service

TraditionalMood277

Imagine the company that released Rebel Moon scraps YOUR movie. That's a wake up call.

Marionaharis89

What does Netflix lose by just releasing the movie?

Locke_John

“the movie needed significant reshoots that ultimately would’ve proved too costly and resource-intensive to justify.”

Toidal

Oh jesus, what if studios start doing early access nonsense, releasing rough cuts, unfinished CGI, and ideas for reshoots pending if the content gets enough early adopters?

Vince_Clortho042

I mean Zack Snyder already has a deal with Netflix, so we're halfway there already.

TitularFoil

Isn't that kind of like what Rebel Moon is doing with it's R rated cut coming later?

Odd_Advance_6438

Kind of? They asked Snyder if he would do a shorter pg 13 movie in exchange for getting an r rated cut at whatever length he wanted.

Toidal

This sounds like the 'pre-order' model of gaming, like the Bethesda move to release it broken and fix it later.

zdejif

I say just release it as a curio. An unfinished rough cut would be interesting.

walter_on_film

They’d have to pay royalties to the production and actors if broadcasted internationally.

StephenHunterUK

A small fraction compared to the amount they've already been paid for their work.

greenpill98

Tax breaks, probably. They just bought some major WWE rights, so they're probably strapped for cash.

Bman4k1

More the the tax breaks. They made 937 million in net income last quarter alone. They are not strapped for cash.

greenpill98

And WWE cost them $5 billion, more than a year in net income according to your number. They can sure be strapped for cash.

Bman4k1

Fair. But 5 billion is over 10 years. Most television deals are not fully upfront, but spread over the length of the contract taking into account NPV of the contract.

greenpill98

Fair point. Nevertheless, this move seems to be a pure cost-saving measure via writing off the film for a tax credit. I don't see any other good reason for it. Combine this with the announcement that Netflix is removing their low-cost ad-free subscription option, this company is acting like an organization that really needs to up the profits and cut costs.

ksj

Is there actually any proof that there are tax credits for unfinished films? I see this mentioned ALL THE TIME on Reddit but I’ve yet to see a source on these mythical tax credits. Edit: I just read the FilmStories.co.uk article you linked elsewhere, and they still don’t source the “write-off” claim. I’d also like to point out that a tax credit is VERY different from a tax write off. And *all* expenses for a corporation are a “tax write-off” because taxes are only paid on profits, not revenue. If Batgirl cost $100M and was never released, Discovery would not have to pay taxes on $100M of their *revenue* that year. If they release it and recoup $20M, they would only be paying taxes on an additional $20M, but would pocket the rest. It literally does not make financial sense to scrap a movie for the “tax write off” unless there is some additional credit offered by the government, one that offers more money than the the studio expects to make on a particular release after taxes, and I’ve seen no evidence of such a credit.

IsamuAlvaDyson

Every movie making studio does this tactic Warner Brothers did it with Batwoman in 2022 Count it as a loss

arealhumannotabot

Does this come from anywhere or is it another reddit answer yanked from thyne ass? What if the reason is that they have a contractual obligation to pay Berry significantly more for its release-- since box office return is not a metric for streaming.

greenpill98

Bro, this is a standard thing in the industry that is getting more and more common. It's a perfectly reasonable speculation to make. Hardly an ass-pull. https://filmstories.co.uk/features/when-films-are-canned-as-tax-write-offs/

SUPRVLLAN

Sweet sweet tax write offs.

Ranier_Wolfnight

Honestly, there’s too much mediocre/flat out bad content out there. If Netflix has saved me some time on avoiding an obvious flaming turd, thanks I guess. So long as the actors and crew got paid and the checks clear for their work, it is what it is. Not everything is fit for consumption.

ksj

None of the crew can effectively put the work on their resume, though, even if their work was very good in spite of the rest of the movie. That’s a big deal in the entertainment industry.

Fudogg92

Maybe just don't watch it, then. As if you are obligated to watch everything that's ever been made. When it comes to artistic works like movies and TV shows, there is never a good excuse to condemn a completed or near completed project to never seeing the light of day.

DONNIENARC0

Ehh idk. The world would probably be a better place without the 2017 Dark Tower movie, just off the top of my head.

ZombieJesus1987

They didn't scrap it, it just went home.

WBD set a disgusting precedent.

NakedGoose

People were scrapping movies well before WBD.

pcrcf

What precedent is that?

ManOnNoMission

Giving WBD way too much credit.

KingMario05

Yup. Expect to see a whole *lot* more of this going forward. :(

ofimmsl

All of Halle Berry's movie for the last 10-20 years should've been scrapped Edit: I just remembered she was in john wick 3 and possibly in the fourth, so those are the exceptions

DONNIENARC0

Though I liked the movies as a whole, I honestly thought she was pretty bad in them, too.

KaneVel

She wasn't in chapter 4, but she was in Cloud Atlas and X-Men Days of the future past. Those three are maybe the only good films of hers in the last 20 years. And I can't remember if she was in X-Men for more than a cameo.

MisterB78

She’s just a bad actress. She’s sucked in every role I’ve ever seen her in.

SingleinGVA

Swordfish. You can’t say that was bad acting 😂

zdejif

’Twas Mandela Effectish for me: could’ve sworn she was the one who sucked Jackman’s piece.

patpend

Given what Netflix has allowed to make the cut in terms of quality, I cannot fathom how bad this movie must be

SubterrelProspector

Bizarre. Lotta amateurish mistakes happening across a number of industries. I feel like on multiple levels, there's a breakdown in the process because of how many people just don't care anymore or decisions are made based on penny-pinchimg cynical studio notes and it just slows the whole thing down and makes everything worse.

Clear_thoughts_

I’ve seen a lot of junk made by Netflix on Netflix, so this must be really bad

Adrian_FCD

Oh NOW you wanna start scrapping movies Netflix? lol

[deleted]

This movie must truly be a stinker for Netflix to shelve it. Anyone remember the god awful Cloverfield 3: Paradox superbowl "surprise film". Netflix is the home of terribly written cheap originals that have just enough budget and post color correction to pass as theatrical worthy films.

WillDill94

You know it’s bad if this gets scrapped but Another Life somehow got a 2nd Season after the first should’ve been shot into the sun

Contribution_Connect

Hope there wasn’t a sex scene of ms berry

How bad does it have to be for them to not even want it to be seen? So many Netflix movies/shows sit in obscurity. Must be crazy bad

cosmicmanNova

why not link to the source?

1984R

Why couldn't they have done this for their string of Adam Sandler "comedies"

Zupheal

how bad does a movie have to be for netflix to scrap its release

jarvis646

Wow it was bad enough that even Netflix won’t release it.

EleanorTrashBag

They could have used that money to wrap up GLOW or Santa Clarita Diet :(

[deleted]

They could have wrapped up Glow with The Gray Man’s catering budget. Oh well.

BigMax

I'm sure they didn't set out to make something so bad it couldn't be released. Plenty of movies probably look great on paper when all you have is a script and some great names on the star/director/etc list.

GiltCityUSA

What a crazy waste of time and money.

Phernaldo

It’s probobly a terrible movie

KingMario05

Ugh. Look, I know it's probably a complete fucking turd, but at least sell it off if ya don't want it. It always sucks seeing someone's work getting shoved away in a vault for a tax break. (Especially because ***NETFLIX IS ALREADY RICHER THAN GOD.***)

GALACTICA-Actual

Next they'll be canceling their series before they ever air. I mean, why wait a whole season before you pull a show?

artfulpain

This is why they plan on the next price increase!

givemeyours0ul

I guess its hard to sell the Innsmouth look if it's not a fish movie...

[deleted]

Halle Berry is notorious for not knowing how to pick a script. The only good performances she gave were in Losing Isaiah and Introducing Dorothy Dandridge. After Dorothy she basically tortured the public with bad films.

bigersmaler

“Sorry Halle, this film just doesn’t have what it takes.” *Releases Tall Girl 2*

ScuseMeBiitch

Oh wow, I actually watched an early screening of this movie like 2 years ago. Not surprised this got scrapped. The movie was all over the place and the plot went downhill.

Magnum_44

If Netflix won't even release it, you know this has the be the pinnacle of shit-tier.

bubbavfx

it must have been just *terrible!* I don't buy the kid cast stuff. 1st time Director/Writer/*Netflix*. Unless the Director has mega veteran support or is a genius, it's super risky. I mean, they released "Extraction"...so awful.
