Movie was way better than I expected, it was stupid but in fun way. Like that "im in metal storm too!" "You liar there is no metal storm 2 yet!" lol. Also I'm biased because I'm in Sydney so it was a bit nuts seeing parts of cbd, if there was a single car crash in the city it would be breaking news over here lol, just wish they had some scenes in the train for more Sydney-ness. Over all 8/10! š
I thought it was just a solid action comedy. Ā The first half was stronger than the second. Ā The ending was a bit of a mess, to me. Ā It was about 20 mins too long. Ā
What impressed me most about that is that it didn't follow the familiar plot beats of having the two characters dig themselves deeper into holes as it goes on, only to reverse it entirely in the last scene. They start off (after the timeskip) in a hole, and talk themselves out of it gradually throughout, in a way that never feels beholden to the plot, and keeps you rooting for them. Genuinely impressive character writing.
i thought it was obvious from the trailers that they had a fling and he was pining over her and she can't resist him because she's still into him even though she knows she should be mad at him.
The scene where Gosling turns that Taylor Swift song back on after Blunt leaves the car and they both stare at each other and he gives her that sweet forlorn smile and slowly looks away and drives off... Man, even *my* heart melted for him.
The fact that Gosling can do drama, action, romance, comedy (including *and not limited to* self deprecating comedy) makes him such a unicorn. He's like Cary Grant with way more in his arsenal. What a star.
Iām happy to see him float away from Aquaman and find more strides in sci-fi. Him being cast in Dune was great - I felt like Aquaman distracted people from how great he was in GoT.
Also enjoyed the sort of meta humor of everyone basically saying no one wants to see Goslingās face only Taylor-Johnsonās when Gosling has one of the hottest faces in Hollywood lol.
I caught the "Copyright 2013" nub at the end of the credits and was confused for a moment, but it seems to have really been in development (or development hell) for that long.
Loved it. Incredibly fun, Gosling is an all-time charisma and charm machine. His comedic abilities are extremely rare in an A-list serious actor. He really is one of the funniest actor's I've ever seen, and he effortlessly carries this movie. The action is clearly crafted by someone who truly loves stunt work and has imagined various scenarios for years, and is finally able to make it into reality. I really hope people see this in theaters, because it's exactly the kind of movie so many people have been wanting. It feels like it's been years since I've seen a movie like this, and everyone is on their A game in it.
I loved it and about halfway through was just thinking that this is the perfect kind of movie to just let go and enjoy. I truly don't think they make them like this anymore. Action? Romance? Utter silliness? Yes please!
I think it's a great tribute to stunt performance which is probably the least appreciated aspect of film making. Even Hair and Make-up get an Oscar category yet stunt men and women put their body on the line and nothing.
My favourite running bit is Colt trying to drink his coffee (which I don't think he actually gets) but my favourite joke might be Colt's grand plan is to "surround him and kick his ass"
Reminds me of the Simpsons, when Bart mentions to Lisa his grand plan is to hose her rival
I loved the running joke that they were talking about it being a great film but it obviously looked horrific. Such a great send-up of contemporary Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking.Ā
Looked pretty unremarkable and cliched, but also seemed like it was parodying movies with famously troubled shoots that somehow turned out a success like Mad Max Fury Road for example.
I guess they were imitating Dune lol. Especially the Jason Mamoa cameo which made me laugh out loud.
Overall a fun action romantic comedy. All the movie references were fun too. Gosling and Blunt had great chemistry.
My favourite joke was Emily Blunt's character suddenly revealing herself to be a great fighter out of nowhere.Ā Ā
That and "It was like a sushi train!"
David Leitch is one of the few directors today giving us big theatrical action movies with an A list star as the lead. Something that was way more popular in the 80ās and 90ās but now is becoming more and more rare. Ā Hope he keeps pumping out stuff like this and Bullet Train.
I enjoyed Fall Guy *so* much more than I expected. It was so clever and funny and meta, all in a charming (not pretentious) way.
I was very pleased to see that Leitch had also directed Bullet Train, the last movie I was this surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
I'm sold, and can't wait for his next movie.
I even enjoyed his swings-but-not-quite hits, Deadpool, and Atomic Blond. I love his stylized vision.
Awesome stunts. Fun characters. Dog going around biting dicks. I enjoyed it. That fall out of the helicopter was definitely the best stunt in my opinion
If you haven't seen it, you might like the Peacock docuseries, Action. The first two episodes are all about Violent Night but the last 4 focus on The Fall Guy, with each episode taking on one of the big stunts. The free fall is there. The truck jump. The car hit from the trailer and the beach roll. The series is basically following Leitch and 87 North and is a really insightful look at the guys who make the stunts happen.
Sure, it's total marketing for The Fall Guy (and I swear Im not some shill for the show lol) but it's also really well done and interesting if you're into stunt work.
Like for instance, the dude who did that high fall, Troy Brown, is actually the son of famed high fall stuntman Bob Brown and the bag used was one that was specifically designed for his father's record setting fall, so it was kind of poetic to see his son break the record on the same bag. And Bob was actually Troy's trainer and stunt coordinator for that one. Just cool legacy stuff like that.
Best joke in the whole film was the guy in the alien suit nodding along to Colt's megaphone speech and then him saying "I fell in love with my wife's sister" with the auto-tuned alien voice
I liked the unicorn. When that element was introduced I was kind of hoping it would be a one night odyssey movie where he's high as fuck the whole time and the unicorn keeps popping up. Alas.
The dog taking French commands was solid too.
It would've been cool if perhaps someone else got high - like someone Ryder got high in the end chase and saw a unicorn too. Just to keep the bit going.
But I also felt like it started to become too much when Colt looked in the mirror at the unicorn, I kind of liked it when it was just in the background
What's even funnier about that scene to me is that they go through all of those needless takes, and then the very next scene has Gail talking about how the movie is way over-budget. I hope Metalstorm was a box office hit
Tom was in hiding after killing his stuntman, Henry. The whole plot of (Ryan) coming was to frame him and not mess up the release of the film. nothing else mattered - remember Jodi didnt even know he was coming.
I liked when Colt was wearing it and poked into the room flipping off Gail as she tried to gaslight Jody. I feel like I could see goslings facial expressions by the way the costume was moving.
It is kinda nice to see Teresa Palmer again on a mainstream project again, she was kinda everywhere in late 2000's and early 2010's and then in late 2010's she was on more smaller projects.
Was there any build to that joke. I canāt tell if I had a momentary lapse in concentration but I swear that just came out of nowhere and was so fucking funny because of it
I think it was a meta joke that this was the scene in the movie Taylor-Johnson would have starved for so he could be all chiseled and abby.
Him walking around in that bath robe to showcase the unattainable physique would have needed a fair bit of effort to achieve. Actors generally need a couple weeks notice to fit that into the filming schedule.
Yeah no build up in the moment, but think it was a call back to when Gosling was high talking to Emily Blunt in the hotel lobby and said it was cause his glucose levels were low.
It definitely came across as random as hell tho, sublime delivery by gosling
All the references to Ryder using post-it notes? I assumed that the movie was subtly telling us that his memory was shot and he was asking stupid questions (Mamoa or Momoa? Etc) because he was hypoglycemic, because he was dieting to be in action star shape... It wasn't really spelt out, but I thought it all fit together pretty well.
Her opening scene in Edge of Tomorrow is total Sarah Conner with her amazingly toned arms. She is a full metal bitch! Sheās also amazing in Sicario. Heck, sheās great in everything sheās done and absolutely beautiful.
They're jumpsuits actually! Rompers have shorts, not trousers.Ā
That being said, I loved her floral jumpsuit and it is my new holy grail item of clothing.Ā
Holy shit that unicorn joke caught me off guard. Hardest I've laughed at joke in a while.
This was just a genuinely good, fun movie. Gosling was infinitely charismatic, his chemistry with Blunt was great, the supporting cast all was great and the action crackled (that sparkling fight scene and the dragging car fight were particular highlights).
And man this really loved paying off jokes. Boat jumping with hands tied, Ryder forgetting he's wearing a mic, Jason Mamoa. I think the only thing it didn't pay off that I was expecting was the talk of a "oner fight scene". Totally thought that would be the final fight.
I could've sworn there was a oner - but I saw this yesterday right after Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare so I may be thinking of that.
But yeah there was really a lot of payoffs. I think they even gave Stephanie Hsu's character the brief producer credit at the end
I work in that building sometimes (today in fact) and it was surreal having one of my real life intrusive thoughts (falling down that void) played out on screen!
Colt and Jody's relationship is genuinely sweet and the chemistry they had for one another is cute. Ryan and Emily did a great job with their dynamic on screen.
I really love the idea of a stuntman falling in love for a camerawoman turned director is pretty romantic.
I've seen Drive Away Dolls, Love Lies Bleeding *and* Challengers this year but Ryan Gosling exiting the water in that tight t shirt with that cover version of I Was Made For Lovin You playing was the horniest cinema moment of the year.
I'm still mad at the cocktease that was Challengers. Give us a hot bisexual throuple Hollywood, you cowards!!!
But also yes, that shot alone was worth the price of admission.
Summer popcorn flicks and spicy margaritas are back on the menu boys. What a fun movie.
If I could change one thing, I would have added in more variety of classic rock. Just steal that vibe from Guardians of the Galaxy.
What I like about the Fall Guy first and foremost are the leads, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt's chemistry are eclectic and fun to watch, their back and forth was really pleasant. The supporting cast were also really good, Hannah Waddingham really good as irritating movie exec, I am kinda sad Stephanie Hsu had little role in this movie but she still got to do cool action scene.
Speaking of actions and stunt, David Leitch and his team, 87 North Production were on their top of the games when it comes to stunts, especially during car chase scene and boat chase in Sydney, and the 3rd act, 3rd act featured a lot of cool stunts but at the same time, it felt too long for me, and could be shorter, but the stunts were cool though and those are one of my nitpicks compared to positive things from the movie.
All in all, some people said that this movie is just not a love letter to stuntworkers, it is a whole damn love book, and I agree with that, I had a good time with it and I hope many people enjoyed the movie too.
P.S. I do not know why this movie reminds me of Tropic Thunder
I had the same thought about Tropic Thunder, must be something about some of it taking place on a movie set. As for the movie I really liked it! Didn't take itself too seriously and was just a bunch of fun. I wasn't expecting a ton of story and there wasn't, but it was okay because the stunts and action scenes carried hard.
P.S. - Dan is a real one and I want him having my back at all times lol
When she asked him to drive her to her car I absolutely knew the gag was going to be that the car was just a few feet away but it still made me laugh anyway.
One question I had is I wonder if there's a specific action star / actor David Leitch was inspired by with the "I do my own stunts" bit
EDIT: For clarification, I meant "I do my own stunts" actors that does not actually do their stunts. Like the stunt version of Joey Tribbiani claiming he writes his lines
The monologue was 1000% Matthew McConaughey. I suspect if you're in the industry there are probably some notorious dick bags that don't respect the stunt performers that got a subtle nod, but I dunno if I'd pick up on em.
That vanity face bit at the beginning for example, that seemed like it was hinting at something people in the movie biz will knowingly be like "oh yeah that's X"
Speaking of, I felt like that should not have been after the credits. It's also funny because I saw "Lee Majors as the Fall Guy" in the end credits before he showed up
I saw it at a matinee and when he showed up I heard laughing and I looked around and realized I was one of only 5 people in the theater and the rest were all single old ladies.
As a makeup wearer, wow whoever did Emily Blunt's makeup for this did great. She looked naturally pretty and not overdone; her character would be more focused on her work than getting dolled up every day.
There is nothing worse than a character who is in the middle of a war, post apocalypse world, or fighting aliens that has a full face of makeup and blush.
Basically every CW TV show.
I was hoping the police would show up at the end and say "Of course they're guilty. There's a dozen witnesses we pulled in from the party, the day of the party Colt wasn't in the country, the video looks deep faked. This is the kind of coverup that would only work in a bad 80s movie. You're under arrest!"
Yeah I was thinking "oh they're copping out and making fun of their own shitty ending instead of just making a good ending", but at the end of the movie I was perfectly satisfied
YES! I thought the same exact thing. Even catching the confession on a secret microphone and then having the protagonist jump on the giant inflatable platform to escape after. Not a bad thing at all I love Big Fat Liar lmfao I'm glad I'm not alone on that
The story wasn't what I thought it was going to be, from the trailer I thought that the body on ice was Tom Ryder, and that the bad guys were chasing Ryan Gosling because they thought he was Tom Ryder. So I was pleasantly surprised with the route this took. 7/10 stars
In 2011, I saw Ryan Gosling wear a sick ass jacket in Drive and I had the self awareness to know I would not look cool if I tried to wear one. I pray I can find that same strength for the Miami Vice Stunt Crew jacket but I fear it might be a losing battle
As for the rest of the movie, I had fun. I think it was a little too cutesy and self-referential for my taste and I don't love the Deadpool-ification of Hollywood that we're currently going through. It also felt like the plot was kind of an afterthought and the whole movie was built around set pieces. I will grant them that the set pieces absolutely rock but there are the bones of a pretty solid noir/comedy here but the actual mystery felt a little half-baked, imo.
I'm okay with the self referential stuff since it focuses on the stunt crew. Usually these types of movies turn Hollywood into a character or focuses mostly on the actors and directors.
The plot itself is pretty dumb, but I think it was set around "let Gosling and Blunt just be charming and flirt". Because that makes the movie. Its fun, lots of cool stunts, great dog, fun gags, but this movie is shit if not for how good the leads were.
I'd agree except that the plot kind of necessitates having Gosling and Blunt split up for most of the movie. They had such good chemistry, it's weird that Gosling just goes off on his own for a good chunk of the film
I really loved this movie. It was so clever. I loved how everything came back (predictably, but delightfully so) such as the blanks, the boat jump, the hands behind the back, the dog's commands. The fight scene in the club was different from most fight scenes I've seen before because it was so psychedelic yet brutal, fantastic yet real. The chemistry between all the characters was fantastic. The villains were kind of...so extreme that it seemed crazy, but it was kind of a Tropic Thunder sort of evil (producers who don't care who dies).
As someone who is a stunt nerd (following specific stunt performers) I really appreciated that this film was made by a stunt person and that totally shows on the screen. But it wasn't just an action movie, it was self-aware, funny, and a decent romance. The Dune references (not to mention Edge of Tomorrow, John Wick, and Lethal Weapon) were clever. The use of the alien costumes made me cry laughing. But even though it was goofy, the danger and violence made it real enough to not seem like just a big goof. And that truck scene with the assistant, the dog and the shovel was simply amazing.
A movie about stunts has to have good stunts, and this one does. But it also really shows audiences stunt work in a way that will make them truly appreciate it.
David Leitch knows how to direct action. He proved it with John Wick and kept proving it with Hobbes and Shaw (dude definitely knows how to handle helicopters in an exciting way). I'm looking forward to his future work. I felt like Jody's character was kind of like David Leitch--started out as a camera operator (I think?) then moved up to directing, just like David Leitch was a stunt performer, then coordinator, then director.
This movie was everything I went in hoping it would be. Is it the greatest movie ever? No. But it was pretty much the best movie it could possibly be. It's the most fun action film I've seen in a long time.
Watched it last week
The Fall Guy is one of the most fun movies I have seen!
- Ryan Gosling is at his peak right now! His charm is oozing out of the screen and his comedy is amazing!
- Emily Blunt does not have a lot to do but her chemistry with Gosling is insane! She really can have chemistry with anyone. The emotional phone call with Colt is the high point of the movie.
- The script is insanely funny and smart with callbacks, and bringing everything full circle. It reminded me of Tremors a lot.
- Some of the jokes are meta with Tom saying Colt's face does not have a good jawline and no Oscars for Stunts
- The story is kinda predictable but making the video of the stuntman's death as a macguffin is smart and pushes the 'stuntpeople are the unseen' narrative
- The action is incredible. Doing it all on sets and locations is a throwback to 80s action movies. I cannot believe the car jump was real!
- Jason Momoa's cameo is honestly the funniest joke for me. Tom who is an asshole but nails the western accent but Momoa's character just totally gives the big speech in his normal accent
Overall, it is a meta movie while being a throwback to big action blockbusters! Absolute blast!
> The story is kinda predictable but making the video of the stuntman's death as a macguffin is smart and pushes the 'stuntpeople are the unseen' narrative
The dead Stuntman is [Justin Eaton](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2988873/), who is also Ryan Gosling and Aaron Taylor Johnson stunt double in this movie, especially for the matrial arts parts. He worked on many Marvel projects like Charlie Cox double on She-Hulk series
Emily Blunt has chemistry with almost everyone of her co-stars except for the Rock. He was seriously anti-charismatic with Emily in the Jungle Cruise movie.
The Jungle Cruise isn't a good movie, but it is a movie I enjoy. I think it just vaguely scratches a certain itch. There's definitely better choices, but I can only watch The Mummy so many times a year.
Something i always think of as cliche is how action movies have that scene where the protagonist is kidnapped, tied and fucked up but somehow manages to flip the table (sometimes literally) and beat the crap out of the kidnappers (just quoted Colt accidentally).
So when we got a scene just like this in The Fall Guy i was anticipating what cliche move he will pull or whether the dog will come rescue him at the last second, but what they did with him blowing gas on the lighter, barbecuing their faces, i would say was new and creative, also plays off the gag that he got lit on fire multiple times at the beginning of the movie.
Another thing is that i knew what i was in for after watching the trailer, that Ryan Gosling is gonna be used by the director for his stuntman powers to pull off a John Wick and rescue Tom Ryder, what I didnāt expect and really liked is that the director was in on it and was plotting against Coltā¦ took the movie to a different direction imo.
My thoughts initially after the trailer was that it would give off the same vibe of Bullet Train (especially that itās the same director), yk the protagonist on a mission with a female boss on the phone directing him, but good thing they didnāt repeat the same idea and gave us something unique.
Something I noticed was in the first act, when Colt returns to do the fire stunt scene, and the crew is lighting him on fire, heās calm and collected. When theyāre about to pour gasoline on Colt you can see him fidgeting his leg with anxiety because he knows this isnāt a stunt this is life/death
Iām probably going to be an outlier but I think this is my favorite movie so far this year. I think Dune 2 is certainly a better film but something about this is so charming and fun I find it hard not to love.
Also it is crazy to me how Aaron Taylor-Johnson never became a āthingā. Like he has the look of a movie star and he can act. He has been in big name films. Somehow he just never made the crossoverā¦
Really enjoyed it but definitely one of those movies where youāre willing to overlook glaring plot holes because the movie is so much fun.
*Major spoilers ahead*
Ryder kills his stunt man on camera in front of a whole party of peopleā¦ not a single person there was going to tell the truth about what happened? They were going to deepfake Colt onto his face and pin the murder on him - even though Colt wasnāt in the area at the time and had an alibi at his other job, and was even booked on a flight to CA after the murder had already occurred? Ryderās girlfriend was an accomplice to the murder and helped to cover it up but she is allowed to remain in the final film? Just an insane number of little big plot holes and common sense goofs - but because the movie is so enjoyable itās easy to put them out of sight, out of mind.
Gosling is infinitely charismatic. The stunts were great. Loved the way the fight scenes were shot - you could actually tell what was happening. The whole drug sequence and the unicorn bit was awesome.
Really fun, likable film and an ode to cinema and the art of stunt performance. I would say itās one of, if not the, best āinsiderā satires since Tropic Thunder ā it reminded me of that film a few times.
One thing I will say is it was far more cartoonish / outlandish than I had expected from the trailer. I was definitely expecting an action flick with big set pieces but not quite as ridiculous as some of the storyline got. Not a bad thing - just tonally different than I had expected and a bit more slapstick at times than the trailer sold it as.
Edit: also Aaron-Taylor Johnson doing mcconaughey in his alien cowboy monologue towards the end was hysterical. He was clearly imitating him and it was spot on.
My biggest problem was how illegal guns are in Australia ye they fire off a crap ton of guns with either no police response or extremely delayed.Ā
As far as all the people who saw the murder: thereās a lot of history in Hollywood where it seems very likely a person was murdered by someone famous at a party yet no one talked. Itās an overlooked plot point but not a hole to me.Ā
>They were going to deepfake Colt onto his face and pin the murder on him - even though Colt wasnāt in the area at the time and had an alibi at his other job, and was even booked on a flight to CA after the murder had already occurred?
I think the implication was that putting him on ice would muddy them narrowing down the time of death enough to make Colt's accusation plausible? Which is obviously nonsense, but I suppose there's nothing in there that says their plan was actually a good idea, they were an actor and a producer rather than criminal masterminds after all. Not to mention Ryder being unable to shut up being the major plot point.
I agree, though, a lot of it felt messy and a bit half baked. It was a lot of fun and I appreciated the respect for stunt people, but it felt like a 3* overall package
I loved this movie. It was so much fun, and Ryan Gosling is so funny. I didn't expect a twist, so it definitely shocked me. Also loved the how the Miami Vice boat jump came back around.
Aaron Taylor Johnson sounding EXACTLY like Matthew McConaughey for the final jump scene was insane. I had to do a double take as I thought Matt was legit there as a gag or something.
Ryan Gosling fighting while high as fuck is right up there with Stephen Chow in Kung Fu Hustle when he tried to kill the landlady only to accidentally hurt himself several times. Could have had more Winston Duke and Stephanie Hsu though.
Over all 8/10! š
As a fellow Sydneysider I actually thought they made Sydney look amazing without ruining it in a Hollywood kind of way.
I thought it was just a solid action comedy. Ā The first half was stronger than the second. Ā The ending was a bit of a mess, to me. Ā It was about 20 mins too long. Ā
yeah we enjoyed it, just needed to be trimmed a bit as you said.
The third act needs work.
Itās been bloody ages since a movie was filmed here and ACTUALLY set in Sydney too
By bloody ages, do you mean a few months ago because Anyone But You was filmed and set here too.Ā Ā
Wait the SYDNEY Sweeney movie?
This was the cutest romantic subplot in an action movie since I don't know when
What impressed me most about that is that it didn't follow the familiar plot beats of having the two characters dig themselves deeper into holes as it goes on, only to reverse it entirely in the last scene. They start off (after the timeskip) in a hole, and talk themselves out of it gradually throughout, in a way that never feels beholden to the plot, and keeps you rooting for them. Genuinely impressive character writing.
Honestly it's a straight up romance and I kinda wish they learned into it more with the marketing, by laying out the setup of the movie.
I don't think they wanted to spoil that they they were actually together but broke up
i thought it was obvious from the trailers that they had a fling and he was pining over her and she can't resist him because she's still into him even though she knows she should be mad at him.
I love a cute romance, and Gosling and Blunt killed it with the chemistry. The Taylor Swift song was just the icing on the cake.
Jason Momoa (Mamoa?) absolutely killing the sci-fi genre with Dune and Metal Storm
I lost it completely when I saw that "Momoa? Or is it Mamoa?" post-it.
There were some golden post-its. "2% breast milk?" Absolutely sent me
Iām happy to see him float away from Aquaman and find more strides in sci-fi. Him being cast in Dune was great - I felt like Aquaman distracted people from how great he was in GoT.
As a rom com lover I really enjoyed Goslingās character confusing Notting Hill and Pretty Woman.
the whole split screen call was the highlight of the movie for me. so wonderfully choreographed and written.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The fight scene in the night club was the highlight for me. That editing must have taken FOREVER, but it looked spectacular!
Every time the fake Dune song played I was waiting for the beat to drop only to be teased
The theme song was SO Duneā¦.this had to be intentional, right?
100%
Yes, it was very intentional
Theme song was DUNE And then they threw in Mad Max for every car sceneĀ
And star wars for the space stuff
Then they pulled Jason Mamoa straight off the set from Dune and threw a jacket and cowboy hat over it
Duncan Idaho is literally a space cowboy in dune.Ā Donāt forget princess of mars as an influence (John Carter)
Even the drug dealer was called Dune
Ryan Gosling screaming at Aaron Taylor-Johnson about carbs and glucose legitimately was one of the funniest parts of this whole movie hahaha
YOU NEED CARBS. YOU NEED TO METABOLIZE GLUCOSE. YOUR BRAIN NEEDS IT FOR COGNITIVE FUNCTION.
Good memory there.
He eats carbs.
Also enjoyed the sort of meta humor of everyone basically saying no one wants to see Goslingās face only Taylor-Johnsonās when Gosling has one of the hottest faces in Hollywood lol.
I could've used a Barbie style narrator telling us that Ryan Gosling isn't the best person to represent this
This was my favorite dialogue in the whole movie. I need him yelling āyou need carbsā as my ringtone. I couldnāt stop laughing
I know you can lean towards drugs for Aaron Taylor-Johnson's eccentric behavior but I choose to believe its solely from the lack of carbs
Lol that was great... completely out of nowhere.
Winston Duke shouting āDWAYNE THE ROCK JOHNSONā as he heaves the female stunt double over the counter killed me.
He was so much fun. The stunt guy round up at the end was awesome.
Dwayne was supposed to play the lead way back in 2013. With all the meta jokes in this movie, I'd be unsurprised if that was a little nod.
This films been in the works that long?? Im surprised
I think it's a great tribute to stunt performance which is probably the least appreciated aspect of film making. Even Hair and Make-up get an Oscar category yet stunt men and women put their body on the line and nothing.
I'M A PICKLE
I'M IN A PICKLE DUCKING AUTOCORRECT
Every time he would give the dog increasingly specific commands in French sent me. My favorite gag in the movie.
My favourite running bit is Colt trying to drink his coffee (which I don't think he actually gets) but my favourite joke might be Colt's grand plan is to "surround him and kick his ass" Reminds me of the Simpsons, when Bart mentions to Lisa his grand plan is to hose her rival
Man i wish the movie ended with him drinking a coffee in peace
āSurround him. Then we kick the shit outta him.ā Hilarious
Reminded me to Die Hard 3: > We go find Simon. Drag him to a ship to shore radio and beat the fucking code out of him
āWhy are you just sitting there?! La boutille!ā
Such a loyal French doggo and a good boi.
Smartest French dog ever
*Snoop starts fake dying in the corner.*
Metal Storm turned out way fucking better than Rebel Moon.
Metal Storm as a name for a sci-fi epic film is pretty metal af.
When they were highlighting it looked like a guitar I was expecting a similar thing to the mad max: fury road guy.
The entire movie I thought it looked like a better parody than Rebel Moon combined with a tinge of Dune lol.
So I'm not the only one that thought that Metal Storm's theme song sounded like a parody of Dune's theme song
That was 100% intended
I loved the running joke that they were talking about it being a great film but it obviously looked horrific. Such a great send-up of contemporary Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking.Ā
Looked pretty unremarkable and cliched, but also seemed like it was parodying movies with famously troubled shoots that somehow turned out a success like Mad Max Fury Road for example.
I love that they shot in the desert in Australia lol
I was laughing cause it was clear they were going for Dune with the music cue but it looked so much like Rebel Moon lol.
I guess they were imitating Dune lol. Especially the Jason Mamoa cameo which made me laugh out loud. Overall a fun action romantic comedy. All the movie references were fun too. Gosling and Blunt had great chemistry.
They were trying to make a bad looking Dune and inadvertently made Rebel Moon.
"Is it Momoa or Mamoa?"
My favourite joke was Emily Blunt's character suddenly revealing herself to be a great fighter out of nowhere.Ā Ā That and "It was like a sushi train!"
Atomic Blonde seemed perfectly realized. I felt like he had a clear vision of it. He executed it and nailed it.
"I'm in MetalStorm too!" "You liar, we're shooting MetalStorm 1!"
I mean ALSO
Jesus fuck. I didn't get this during the movie. I needed it spelled out lmao
Awesome stunts. Fun characters. Dog going around biting dicks. I enjoyed it. That fall out of the helicopter was definitely the best stunt in my opinion
> Jean Claude, Attaque!!
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to check that out
Now I wanna watch METALSTORM looks amazing
You can watch Dune and get halfway there - it's just missing the cowboy aspect really
Just flick between Mad Max and Dune every 10 seconds. Youāll probably get there. Still missing the cowboy aspect though
Trivia lists that one of the post-it notes says "Buy Unicorn food". So Ryder has been on that trip.
I like that before the punchline, it is just Colt and Jody argued about their relationship through megaphone.
What's even funnier about that scene to me is that they go through all of those needless takes, and then the very next scene has Gail talking about how the movie is way over-budget. I hope Metalstorm was a box office hit
Was the film actually over budget or was that Gail misleading Goslings character to help her scheme?
Pretty sure it was the latter, but in the moment it was a funny bit
Tom was in hiding after killing his stuntman, Henry. The whole plot of (Ryan) coming was to frame him and not mess up the release of the film. nothing else mattered - remember Jodi didnt even know he was coming.
My favorite was Ryan Gosling crying to All to Well in the car š
That had me rolling too. Especially when it kicked back on when she got out of the car.
I mean, the song is 10 minutes long
That and Gosling walking into the apartment and just seeing the unicorn standing off to the side got big laughs in my theatre.
I liked when Colt was wearing it and poked into the room flipping off Gail as she tried to gaslight Jody. I feel like I could see goslings facial expressions by the way the costume was moving.
Nah best joke in the movie was the closeup of Colt smiling to himself when he jumped the speedboat over the ramp.
āStill got it.ā
It is kinda nice to see Teresa Palmer again on a mainstream project again, she was kinda everywhere in late 2000's and early 2010's and then in late 2010's she was on more smaller projects.
I have such an insane crush on her good god
I honestly would've had no idea that was her if I didn't catch her name in the opening credits. The last thing I saw her in came out 8 years ago
You can tell the director, who used to be a stuntman, and the stunt team had a blast doing this movie.
You could see the love of the work. It was glorious.
āEat some carbs Ryder!ā Was fucking hilarious
That whole sequence was great - including the quick shot of him crying in the bathtub š
I just like really donāt need this right now like ā¦
Was there any build to that joke. I canāt tell if I had a momentary lapse in concentration but I swear that just came out of nowhere and was so fucking funny because of it
I donāt think so. Maybe Ryanās character had to maintain a similar physique as Ryder to be his double. So they had to be on the same diets.
God damn Emily Blunt looks good in a romper
When I was watching this I was thinking this was the most attractive I've found her in any movie. Almost distracting at times lol
Can I present to you, edge of tomorrow. God damn. I usually try focus on the movie more than the actors but damn.
Her opening scene in Edge of Tomorrow is total Sarah Conner with her amazingly toned arms. She is a full metal bitch! Sheās also amazing in Sicario. Heck, sheās great in everything sheās done and absolutely beautiful.
All the closeups on her face made that fact even more clear
They're jumpsuits actually! Rompers have shorts, not trousers.Ā That being said, I loved her floral jumpsuit and it is my new holy grail item of clothing.Ā
Yeah, the jumpsuits reminds me when Greta Gerwig filmed Barbie, she wore jumpsuits on few occasions.
I have no idea what a romper is but god damn I agree with you
It's the one piece outfit she was wearing when they were filming in front of the Opera House
The opening scene was a oner as he walks through the set to get up to the drop. But there was no oner fight scene.
That opening oner was legit awesome
I work in that building sometimes (today in fact) and it was surreal having one of my real life intrusive thoughts (falling down that void) played out on screen!
I worked on the movie and the scene where he first arrives on the metalstorm set was shot in one, but for whatever reason it had cuts in the edit.
That looked like a giant gulp of gasoline
Colt Seavers knows how to siphon gas
"What went wrong??? WHAT WENT RIGHT?!?!?!?" That was such a great line.
Hearing Ryan scream in like autotune when he's stabbed with the pen made me laugh more than it should've lol
Both movies even feature a psycho producer with a love of Diet Coke (Cruise in Thunder, Waddingham in The Fall Guy).Ā
Itās about the production of a movie and a bunch of crazy shit happening behind the scenes, so the Tropic Thunder comparison is very apt.
It reminds you (and me) of tropic thunder because it is a meta movie about making movies with lots of pyro nods sprinkled around. I loved it!
When she asked him to drive her to her car I absolutely knew the gag was going to be that the car was just a few feet away but it still made me laugh anyway.
I like the suggestion that Tom Ryder went insane due to a lack of carbs ā good commentary on the action hero diet many actors go on.
Did they ever show Colt getting his coffee? I liked it as an ongoing joke, but dont remember seeing him actually getting to enjoy a cup.
yea it was such a great gag that I was bummed not to see a payoff
One question I had is I wonder if there's a specific action star / actor David Leitch was inspired by with the "I do my own stunts" bit EDIT: For clarification, I meant "I do my own stunts" actors that does not actually do their stunts. Like the stunt version of Joey Tribbiani claiming he writes his lines
Yeah they even mention Tom Cruise. The character himself waa giving a lot of Matthew McConaughey.
He was even doing the Lincoln commercials.
I had no idea this was based on an 80s TV show until my friend freaked out when Lee Majors showed up at the end.
Is that why the sound effects for Million Dollar Man was used?Ā
As a makeup wearer, wow whoever did Emily Blunt's makeup for this did great. She looked naturally pretty and not overdone; her character would be more focused on her work than getting dolled up every day.
For real. Loved her wardrobe too. Her lash tech deserves some credit cos they looked so perfect.
There is nothing worse than a character who is in the middle of a war, post apocalypse world, or fighting aliens that has a full face of makeup and blush. Basically every CW TV show.
Legit loved The Fall Guy. The unicorn bit and high fight scene was really fun. Great popcorn movie. I hope people go see it. Great stunts too.
Surprised not a lot of people are talking about Waddingham. I thought she was terrific in the ending when she goes full extreme.
For all the talk of "issues in the third act" in the script, the third act was the best part of this film.
Also trying to get back the recording at the end, my assumption was that they would have recorded to multiple locations or to cloud storage.
Yeah I was thinking "oh they're copping out and making fun of their own shitty ending instead of just making a good ending", but at the end of the movie I was perfectly satisfied
I liked this movie, I really did, but I just have to note that halfway through the third act I thought "Holy shit, this is just like Big Fat Liar"
YES! I thought the same exact thing. Even catching the confession on a secret microphone and then having the protagonist jump on the giant inflatable platform to escape after. Not a bad thing at all I love Big Fat Liar lmfao I'm glad I'm not alone on that
Gosling as the valet was my favorite bit in the whole movie, knew we were in for a ride after that
The story wasn't what I thought it was going to be, from the trailer I thought that the body on ice was Tom Ryder, and that the bad guys were chasing Ryan Gosling because they thought he was Tom Ryder. So I was pleasantly surprised with the route this took. 7/10 stars
In 2011, I saw Ryan Gosling wear a sick ass jacket in Drive and I had the self awareness to know I would not look cool if I tried to wear one. I pray I can find that same strength for the Miami Vice Stunt Crew jacket but I fear it might be a losing battle As for the rest of the movie, I had fun.
You can rock a Miami vice stunt crew jacket. It has a vintage/thrift look. No one can pull off a golden scorpion jacket.
There are 2 people who can - Ryan Gosling - Louise Belcher in that one Bobās Burgers Halloween episode Thatās it
The plot itself is pretty dumb, but I think it was set around "let Gosling and Blunt just be charming and flirt".
Watched it last week The Fall Guy is one of the most fun movies I have seen! - Some of the jokes are meta with Tom saying Colt's face does not have a good jawline and no Oscars for Stunts - The story is kinda predictable but making the video of the stuntman's death as a macguffin is smart and pushes the 'stuntpeople are the unseen' narrative - The action is incredible. Doing it all on sets and locations is a throwback to 80s action movies. I cannot believe the car jump was real! - Jason Momoa's cameo is honestly the funniest joke for me. Tom who is an asshole but nails the western accent but Momoa's character just totally gives the big speech in his normal accent Overall, it is a meta movie while being a throwback to big action blockbusters! Absolute blast!
> The story is kinda predictable but making the video of the stuntman's death as a macguffin is smart and pushes the 'stuntpeople are the unseen' narrative The dead Stuntman is [Justin Eaton](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2988873/), who is also Ryan Gosling and Aaron Taylor Johnson stunt double in this movie, especially for the matrial arts parts. He worked on many Marvel projects like Charlie Cox double on She-Hulk series
Emily Blunt has chemistry with almost everyone of her co-stars except for the Rock. He was seriously anti-charismatic with Emily in the Jungle Cruise movie.
The Rock has no chemistry with anyone. He always comes across as asexual.Ā
When he kisses Vanessa Kirby in Hobbs and Shaw I thought he had more romantic tension with Statham lol
*Major spoilers ahead* Ryder kills his stunt man on camera in front of a whole party of peopleā¦ not a single person there was going to tell the truth about what happened?
My biggest problem was how illegal guns are in Australia ye they fire off a crap ton of guns with either no police response or extremely delayed.Ā As far as all the people who saw the murder: thereās a lot of history in Hollywood where it seems very likely a person was murdered by someone famous at a party yet no one talked.
It was a lot of fun and I appreciated the respect for stunt people, but it felt like a 3* overall package
š
I loved this movie. It was so much fun, and Ryan Gosling is so funny. I didn't expect a twist, so it definitely shocked me. Also loved the how the Miami Vice boat jump came back around.
The All Too Well bit had me dying. I thought all the music in the movie was fantastic.
Atomic blonde bring briefly shown in the opening montage just had me thinking about how much I liked atomic blonde lol
This movie had the most breaking glass scenes of any movie I ever seen.
Yeah and then the gag of Colt's hoodie spilling out pieces of glass endlessly was a hilarious wink to that!
Did Ryan Gosling ever get his coffee?
Aaron Taylor Johnson sounding EXACTLY like Matthew McConaughey for the final jump scene was insane. I had to do a double take as I thought Matt was legit there as a gag or something.
Ryan Gosling fighting while high as fuck is right up there with Stephen Chow in Kung Fu Hustle when he tried to kill the landlady only to accidentally hurt himself several times. Could have had more Winston Duke and Stephanie Hsu though.
I've only seen Ryan Gosling in 3 things, not including that one SNL sketch: Barbie, Fall Guy and Young Hercules. I think I'm a Ryan Gosling fan now
Watch the nice guys
Why is Chinese chicken orange?
