Train to Busan, also i was an 80s kid and Return of the Living dead was huge for me growing up

drkensaccount

Also, Return of the Living Dead has a great soundtrack.

blacktothebird

Return of living dead gave us so many of the tropes in zombies today. Eating and destroy the brain and its being a viral instead of supernatural

poo-rag

Destroying the brain works on Night of the living dead zombies Destroying the brains of Return of the living dead zombies does nothing It's also a toxic gas and not a virus What is pedantry for if not internet arguments about cult horror films?

blacktothebird

You win this time! Please disregard previous comment

[deleted]

Dawn of the Dead for sure

bradperry2435

Both original and remake

[deleted]

Yess

WillysJeepMan

Only the original IMO. I do not consider the remake to be a "must-see".

bradperry2435

How many zombie movies do you put over the remake?

SilasMarsh

I'm not a zombie movie connoisseur or anything, but I can't think of one that I wouldn't put over the remake.

bradperry2435

Pretty much it helped bring the new era of zombies into the world. It’s pretty important actually

SilasMarsh

It was part of the zombie resurgence that was happening at the time, but it didn't really do anything new or interesting.

bradperry2435

It was the dawn of the fast zombies. No pun intended

SilasMarsh

I believe 28 Days Later came out with them first.

bradperry2435

Technically they aren’t zombies in 28

Emergency_Fig_6390

I dont mind the movie but i cant stand the filters

SilasMarsh

The filters, the characters, the messaging. There's more things I can't stand in it than things I can.

MonitorAway

I agree. It’s mostly because it was not shot in Milwaukee as the story said it was supposed to be.

PhilhelmScream

[[REC]](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/8329-rec) (2007) >A television reporter and cameraman follow emergency workers into a dark apartment building and are quickly locked inside with something terrifying. [One Cut of the Dead](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/513434) (2017) >Real zombies arrive and terrorize the crew of a zombie film being shot in an abandoned warehouse, said to be the site of military experiments on humans.

ithinkther41am

I love One Cut of the Dead, but man I haven’t been able to convince anyone to see it. Also, the French remake looked awful and the trailer gave too much away.

PseudoFenton

One Cut of the Dead is amazing! Its certainly more of a niche film, but its one i recommend a lot despite that.

Merciless972

Rec is so good, so is the sequel.

Hurdy_Gurdy_Man_84

George Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968) is the film that was the first game-changer in the subgenre of zombie horror because it was the first film - the first major hit film, at any rate - that showed zombies as flesh eaters and who were not mind-controlled by some person with a purpose. Zombies in the past were always controlled by voodoo and operated by some person with a nefarious purpose in mind. See White Zombie (1932), I Walked with a Zombie (1943), The Plague of the Zombies (1966) as specimens.

basefibber

Not only was it the first, it's also just straight up really great. Lots of "firsts" are just homework, outdone by later iterations, but NOTLD absolutely stands on its own next to modern standards.

kswissreject

I feel like Warm Bodies is an interesting addition to the zombie genre for sure. Def not your normal zombie flick.

sloppyjo12

I’d add The Girl With All The Gifts under that label too, maybe one that isn’t great but takes a different approach to the genre that makes it interesting

kswissreject

Wanted to like it more than I did, ya. But def an interesting addition for sure.

dr_nerdface

i enjoyed it

wuddafuggamagunnaduh

It's my favorite Romeo and Juliet movie.

TheRealReapz

Train to Busan is quite a good movie. Undead is a fun movie from Australia, low budget but barely felt like it. Dawn of the Dead remake is badass. Alive is also fun.

lingh0e

I was purposefully renting bad movies in the early 2000's. For some reason my local rental chain had an endless supply of really bad horror dvd's. I picked up Undead one night thinking it would be more of the same. I was shocked with how much I enjoyed it. Yeah, it was low budget as fuck, but goddamn was it fun.

TheRealReapz

Honestly I'm just surprised someone else in the wild has seen Undead! Also I love the fact you purposefully rented bad horror movies, that's awesome.

Time-travel-for-cats

Fido (2006) is my favorite zombie comedy. It is a world similar to the 1950s United States, but with collared zombies used as servants. A young boy befriends the family zombie and calls him Fido. Fido is played brilliantly by Sir Billy Connelly. All dead become zombies in this world, and so the culture of anxiety mirrors the Cold War paranoia so I think they accomplished a really interesting aesthetic.

graison

Carrie anne moss, Tim Blake Nelson, Dylan baker. Shot in Kelowna, BC! Great movie.

DoggyDoggy_What_Now

This movie doesn't get talked about enough, and not just in the classic r/movies, "has anyone heard of this [well known gem]?" kind of way. It's almost like, but not quite, a dark comedy, and it has a very unique premise. It's like Leave it to Beaver and Beethoven as a zombie movie.

wardenferry419

Planet Terror is fun

VelvetSinclair

Horrified that this is the only mention of that film Probably the best zombie film there is, hands down, imo

Sea_Impro

For those who want to experience worldwide suspense and extreme action, I suggest seeing "World War Z," "The Girl with All the Gifts," and "Train to Busan." Enjoy your viewing!"

Malyfas

It has be posted in this sub before but should always be restated: World War Z was a fantastic zombie movie that should have had a different title. I put it on par with Train to Busan. In the modern era, no other 2 movies capture the global scale feeling of a zombie outbreak. Top tier and strictly better than Walking Dead on TV (the best zombie show television has to offer).

Tobyghisa

World war Z was a mid zombie movie

lingh0e

Ugh. WWZ wasn't a good movie in any capacity.

Malyfas

I begged to differ, and we can agree to disagree. If you try to equate the book World War™ Z versus the movie world war Z it was horrible. But the OP was asking about the best zombie movies, blah blah blah world war Z is a zombie movie was great. It wasn’t “world war Z adaptation for the book” again we can agree to disagree on that point and that’s OK. You’re a lot of your opinion. I am allowed mine. Please follow what OP was trying to say and ask for the best zombie movie like... Ever. No matter what you say I will watch it! Peace.

Deft_one

Night of the Living Dead Dawn of the Dead (both of them) Sean of the Dead 28 Days / Weeks Later Kingdom (television series)

TwentyFour7

*Shaun

daddyfatsac

Awww, leave ‘em alone.

Deft_one

Yes, my bad; I defaulted to my friend's name rather than the film

Tobyghisa

It’s a UK series, but it’s good. Dead Set.

Drongo17

Cargo (2017) is one set in the Australian outback that is definitely worth a look. It works with the idea of zombies as a sickness on the natural world. Two that I'll suggest as "different takes" are Pontypool (2008) where language is the vector of spread, and Rampant (2018) which is set in ancient Korea. Neither will be your favourite film but really interesting premises.

nolte100

Cargo is the saddest movie I think I’ve ever seen. My wife was pregnant with our first kid when it came out and refuses to watch it to this day.

Foreign-Solution-483

Something fun is Little Monsters. I really liked this movie! Synopsis: A teacher, a struggling musician, and a kids' show personality join forces to protect young children during an unexpected zombie invasion.

Scary_Sarah

I don't even like zombie content but this movie was a blast

Standard_Olive_550

My Top Zombie Flick Recommendations (in no particular order, but each one I consider important to the genre) Zombie/Zombie Flesh Eaters Night of the Living Dead (not the special edition) Dawn of the Dead (any cut will work) Day of the Dead The Serpent and the Rainbow Dead & Buried Dead Heat Return of the Living Dead Return of the Living Dead 3 (unrated cut) Braindead/Dead-Alive (the uncut version!) White Zombie The Re-Animator If you liked "running infected" flicks like 28 Days Later, I recommend Nightmare City The Living Dead Girl Grapes of Death Cemetery Man The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue/Let Sleeping Corpses Lie My Boyfriend's Back

Island_Maximum

The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue/Let Sleeping Corpses Lie/Don't open the window/Don't speak ill of the dead and about 20 other titles....(lol)  ...is a greatly underrated Zombie movie! It takes a bit to get going but has some great locations and settings. It's also a neat take that the zombies can raise other corpses themselves.

LessBeyond5052

It's also creepy as fuck. The scenes in the hospital towards the end are brilliant and contain some nasty gore.

LessBeyond5052

Brilliant list and agree with all of them.

TMLTurby

Return of the Living Dead (I think this is where the "zombies eat brains" thing started)

doomscrolling420

28 Day/Weeks later

blocodents

28 days definitely. 28 weeks definitely not.

doomscrolling420

I just threw it in cause I enjoy Robert Carlyle as an actor, but I agree definitely not a you have to.

EnderForHegemon

28 Days definitely. 28 Weeks (first scene) definitely. 28 Weeks (the rest of the film) maybe not.

doomscrolling420

Yes! I love Robert Carlyle, he always plays the scummiest character Trainspotting etc I like when the wifey gets a hold of him!

Nofunatall69

Zombie by Lucio Fulci, 1979 (also known as Zombi 2, Zombie Flesh Eaters, and Woodoo)

Island_Maximum

Came to say this. These are scary Zombies, who will kill and eat you in horrific fashion. Not to mention the great makeup and effects.  Plus it has the epic Zombie vs. Shark scene.

Standard_Olive_550

GOAT'ed zombie flick!

danthebaker

I feel like someone could make a pretty compelling documentary just about the zombie vs. shark scene. Well, maybe a *short* documentary. But every time I watch it I want to know the backstory for how they convinced that stuntman to grab onto the shark and then allow it close enough to bite off the fake arm.

YeaSpiderman

Oh man blast from the past. Watched that like 20 years ago in college

PseudoFenton

If you want an utterly bonkers Australian indie horror comedy then Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014) is a solid suggestion. Its amazing, but also ludicrously over the top in every way and very much a fresh and different flavour/style from every other zombie movie out there.

Hopey-1-kinobi

And the sequel: Wyrmwood Apocalypse. I only recently watched the first one and then found out there’s a second. It’s on the list.

PseudoFenton

The second one has some fun parts, and logical "settling down" elements of the world, but it doesn't measure up to the first imo. Still worth a watch if you enjoyed the first one, though.

nikofd

My favorite is Tom Savini's 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. I still remember watching it for the first time as a kid and I've had recurring zombie nightmares my whole life since. Top notch performance by Tony Todd as well.

MajYoshi

Definitely Zombeavers.

CheeseAtMyFeet

I can't believe *Pontypool* hasn't been mentioned. Literally the only fresh take on zombies in the 21st century, amazingly well written and acted with a ton of tension.

WillysJeepMan

I do not view 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, or I Am Legend as zombie movies. All excellent, IMO, but not zombies. Here's my list of "*must-see*" zombie movies (with a reason for what makes it a "*must-see*"). There are many more zombie movies that I enjoy, but I don't think they rise to that level. * **Last Man on Earth** (1964) - This is an infection/zombie hybrid. Very atmospheric. Through interwoven flashbacks, it tells how society broke down. * **Night of the Living Dead** (1968)  - It is a classic for a reason.  Builds tension and a sense of dread without any gore.  * **Night of the Living Dead** (1990) - This is, IMO, THE model for how remakes should be done.  Tom Savini directed this and did so with a great respect for the original.  There are a few tweaks from the original that add an extra punch to those who have seen the original dozens of times. * **Dawn of the Dead** (1978) - Another classic.  It does a masterful job of telling the story of individuals (Roger and Stephen in particular) and society in general.  Romero again builds tension and a sense of dread, but this time with in-your-face gore that is used effectively. It is in my top 5 greatest movies... of any genre. * **Day of the Dead** (1985) - An underrated classic.  It has a slower pace, which many criticize, but it offers the viewer time to let the situation soak in.  * **Night of the Zombies** (aka Hell of the Living Dead) (1980) - most fans of the Zombie sub-genre dislike this movie, but it is one of my favorites.  Sure, there it rips off a lot from Dawn of the Dead (1978), but there are some very creative scenes, and the larger story is something that is very relevant today. * **Zombie** (1979) - Lucio Fulci’s classic.  It was the modern standard for “zombies in the Caribbean”.  It contains one of the best cringe-inducing on-screen deaths. * **Rammbock: Berlin Undead** (2010) - As an American, I thoroughly enjoy films produced elsewhere.  There’s a different feel and style to them that I greatly appreciate.  Rammbock is fantastic.  The characters feel real and relatable. * **Train to Busan** (2016) - I thoroughly dislike super-human in strength and speed zombie movies, but this is one that seems to pull it off... primarily because it isn’t a pedal-to-the-metal affair. There are plenty of scenes that are a bit calmer and slower.  The ebb and flow of the pace strikes a good balance. * **The Horde** (2009) - A mix of street hoods, cops, and zombies.  There’s a back story to it that wasn’t really given time to explore, but it is a bleak and oppressive.  It is different enough from the typical zombie movie that it makes it interesting.

Fn_Spaghetti_Monster

Last Man on Earth is based on I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, so much more Vampire like thank Zombie . Still a great movie though. All three of the I Am Legend have good and bad points but are pretty watch at least once.

WillysJeepMan

That is true. LAMOE, I Am Legend, and Omega Man are all excellent in their rights. In Last Man on Earth, people die and then become reanimated. That is why I consider it a zombie movie, but I can see the case for it being a vampire or infected movie.

Fn_Spaghetti_Monster

True, it's been a while since I have actually watched LAMOE. They are more zombish than the other movies, but they still have the one smart/normal girl he doesn't realize is a 'monster' and don't they have some kind of reference to garlic? They don't really fit neatly into either category.

Standard_Olive_550

Hell of the Living Dead is my shit! It suffers from the same pacing issues as other Mattei flicks, but its got some good gore! I also dig Burial Ground, Zombi 3 and Zombie Holocaust. Erotic Nights of the Living Dead and Porno Holocaust are garbage.

WillysJeepMan

I appreciate running across a kindred spirit regarding Hell of the Living Dead. LOL I have the soundtrack and while some of Goblin's tracks are from Dawn of the Dead, there are a few from Contamination.

Island_Maximum

The Return of the living dead series is great because it both follows and breaks "zombie rules".  Head shots do nothing, fire works - but spreads the infection, they can talk and have intelligence and a few other surprises.  Now the quality goes down for each sequel, but if you stick to the first three you'll be fine.

r4z0rbl4d3

Wasting Away (2007), formerly called Aaah! Zombies!, is a comedy told from the zombies' perspective. I think it's hilarious, and I loved it when I was very much into the genre for a while.

BlotchComics

Cargo The Night Eats the World The Crazies (2010)

Hopey-1-kinobi

I really enjoyed The Crazies, although some would argue that it’s not truly a zombie movie.

BlotchComics

Yeah. I debated whether to include it, but I consider most of the "viral outbreak" horror movies to be the same category as "zombies".

CordouroyStilts

I can't believe nobody has mentioned "The Battery" (2012)

YeaSpiderman

The battery is pretty good. Good enough where it has stuck with me for 6+ years. It’s on Amazon. Great ending

narfjono

*One Cut of the Dead.* GO INTO IT ABSOLUTELY BLIND.

MonitorAway

I see lots of great picks, but I don’t see enough of these; Day of the Dead and Cemetery Man.

Fido Cooties

bentsea

This may sound cliche, but the original Night of the Living Dead is still pretty amazing. Definitely follow it with Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. After that I'd be sure to watch Return of the Living Dead, which was a perfect distillation of 80s horror. After that, Peter Jackson's Dead Alive is bonkers. Definitely Train to Busan. The Re Animator Deadgirl 2008 It's not for everyone, but maybe The Dead Don't Die Not movies: Kingdom, Last of Us

dudereverend

I'm disappointed I had to scroll this far down to see The Dead Don't Die.

bentsea

It's a really unique movie with great dry humor.

dudereverend

It is! I mean, Bill Murray has been doing dry for years. But, honestly, Adam Driver and Selena Gomez do dry comedy well also.

bentsea

And they even got Iggy Pop to play himself. No makeup required.

Does anyone remember “Quarantine” ?

We need a zombie-themed romantic comedy, a “zomcom” 😂

JaimeLeMatcha

Alive (2020) Underrated in my opinion

ComaRedxbl

Dawn of the Dead Land of the Dead Fido World War Z 28 Days Later Zombieland

NotEnoughIsTooMuch

The Cured lends an interesting twist to the genre. The zombie plague is done, a cure has been found and many former zombies are trying to get on with their lives, with a host of societal challenges. https://youtu.be/fSutgzDY_I4

ThogOfWar

If you're a fan of the comedy-horror of Shaun Of The Dead, check out Cockneys Vs Zombies. Best slowest chase ever. Essentially, old folks home needs to defend against zombies. Also, if you're ever given the opportunity to watch a movie called "Zom-BEES" about bees that turn people into zombies, stab that person because they will only bring you pain and misery.

collpase

Legendary Jess Franco's Oasis of the Zombies (1981): "presents a simple, unhurried, and unpretending appreciation of zombies and their habitat, a fresh and provocative desert landscape" and is a "trance inducing" "zombie flick".

KneeHighMischief

Unfortunately it isn't streaming anywhere but I still recommend *Dead & Breakfast* (2004). It's a hilarious horror comedy musical. It doesn't skimp on the gore, has a fantastic final girl & the source of the zombie outbreak isn't the usual chemical reason.

Hopey-1-kinobi

I really enjoyed the musical interludes, too.

ThogOfWar

Country and hip hop. Hick Hop.

nolte100

Not a movie, and not traditional zombies, but I can’t believe it hasn’t been mentioned. The Last of Us.

Advanced_Street_4414

I’m feel like ya gotta watch Romero’s films to get perspective on the genre. Understand that they have their flaws, but they also started the whole thing. Not sure if Land Of The Dead is a must see, but I liked it and I was glad to see Romero get a true Hollywood budget for a change. Beyond that, my favs are World War Z, 28 Days Later, Shaun Of The Dead, Zombieland, Zach Snyder’s Dawn Of The Dead remake. I was also pretty cool with the Night Of The Living Dead remake. There’s a bunch of Italian stuff I never got into, mostly because they tended to lean in to supernatural elements. The first Resident Evil.

Also not a movie but Black Summer was really good.

NateW9731

Everyone has their own preferences, but for me, these are my favorite (in no particular order) Shaun of the Dead (British zombie comedy with some good scares) Dawn of the Dead (remake, quintessential 2000s zombie movie directed by Zack Snyder and written by James Gunn) 28 Days Later (some of the most terrifying "zombies" ever) World War Z (big budget Hollywood blockbuster style zombie movie that I think is quite underrated)
