>why are the sequels made for kids?
They made a Ghostbusters cartoon back in the 80s. Acting like "Ghostbusters for kids" is some modern thing is wrong.
Furiosa was a mixed bag, had some serious inconsistencies, was arguably a downgrade, and unnecessary to lore/canon. Mission Impossible is retreading old ground with less appealing scenarios and bad pacing. Avatar 2 is a vacuous anomaly, but REALLY bad. Can't say anything about Planet of the Apes. I've just not been very interested in the franchise past the first movie.
All these things have something in common: the viewer's experience in relation to originality.
Edit: oh no, I did the thing. I had negative things to say about movies. Whatever will we do to make up for such awful negativity? Dune 2 was ok. Cinematography was excellent. There, happy children?
Dune wasn’t very good, but it’s really hard to translate into film. I think it was more the soundtrack in dune that threw me off. The women screaming in the soundtrack was off putting.
> Prove me wrong.
How? Your entire argument is subjective on an elementary level.
I could easily say Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was made for adults, had knee-slapping jokes, and the acting was superb.
Where does that leave us?
The point being, how are we defining quality movies? How are we determining the criteria and what makes them supposedly suck?
I personally didn't care for Frozen Empire, but I can see why some people would.
I think the John Wick franchise is fantastic and I think that because after the first I knew what I was signing up for in seeing the sequels. I also believe they've redefined how action films are done for the better....but that's just my subjective opinion.
Its not your opinion that troubles me. Obviously its yours to have and at the end of the day people can agree to disagree and move along.
I'm just not sure what kind of conversation you were hoping to initiate here and to be honest your final sentence made it less about today's state of movies and more about challenging this sub to convince you of something inconsequential.
But I digress, have you seen Furiosa yet? That's the most recent movie I've seen and I quite enjoyed it. A departure from Fury Road but still good in its own way IMO.
I have, I didn’t like it, but I don’t like the previous mad max movies either so I’m biased. There are movies that are watchable, they don’t stack up to previous good movies though.
> I have, I didn’t like it, but I don’t like the previous mad max movies either so I’m biased.
Fair enough.
So what's the last movie you've seen that you enjoyed?
>Any franchise
So don't watch franchise films?
The whole point of them is to have mass appeal. They aren't going to be winning awards or taking risks.
No one's going to win an Oscar for their Acting in Avengers7: The Return of the McGuffin, because that's not the point of Avengers movies.
Other people like them. And they make money more often than original movies.
There have been a ton of original movies this year that no one went to see.
The point is to be entertained. If a movie isn't entertaining to you, then you're not under any obligation to watch it, and most places will refund your ticket if you walk out and say you weren't enjoying it.
I haven't seen any of the new Ghostbusters films, because I know I'm not the target audience.
What?
No. The answer is that whether a movie is "good" is subjective. Some people enjoy the new Ghostbusters. That's fine. You didn't, and I know I wouldn't. That's fine too.
No movie is going to appeal to everyone, and you don't need to watch movies you know you won't be entertained by.
Ah yes, Hollywood. The Single Entity that is solely responsible for every movie.
I see you're not here for serious discussion so I'll leave you to it. Have fun!
I didn’t like the focus being on the media, it was obviously trying to tell us the media were the heroes. We all know that’s not the case in real life. Oh and California and Texas were on the same side. What?? Lol
Watching most of them is how you start, then you develop *taste* based on those experiences and you have to make more conscious decisions about what to watch.
It’s such a sweeping generalization and such a reductionist take that I can only surmise that you’re too afraid to actually do any research and see the sheer depth of filmmaking that’s currently being produced. Does being afraid make you a pussy? I don’t think so, I think there’s still time to learn and grow
Ghostbusters has always been a franchise for kids. Granted 80's and 90's kids that were exposed a bit racier content but still. The second best entry in the franchise is literally a TV cartoon from the 90's. I'm not sure why that surprises you.
Also, I've watched over 20 movies in theaters this year. Frozen Empire is probably in my bottom 5. While it's not a truly terrible film, most theatrical releases this year have been better.
All movies absolutely suck at least 2-3 years back. I'm not going to blame them having a female action hero lead in everything like most people. They simply write god awful scripts/movies for these girls.
Tomb raider, resident evil and everything else female lead action from back then was great.
My conclusion is whomever is writing scripts for movies nowadays is a woman hating misogynist.
You dont like movies. You want people to think you have strong opinions on movies because you think, wrongly, that pissing on popular films make you look interesting. But, to the contrary, this kind of closed minded "hot takes" only proves that you know nothing about the subject you supposedly are so passionate about. Just to "PRoVe u WrOnG" here are some movies from "franchises" (assuming, you mean based on an existing IP) from 2012-2024 that are actually good:
* Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One
* Paddington 1 and 2
* Planet of the Apes movies
* Mad Max Fury Road and Furiosa
* Some Marvel movies like Civil War, Deadpool, Dr. Strange, Blackpanther, Spiderman trilogy, Spiderverse stuff, Avengers films, etc.
* Shazam, Joker and The Batman (Actually i dont like Joker, but some people do)
* Mission Impossible franchise
* John Wick movies
>Anyway, it’s not just ghostbusters. Any franchise you can think of is absolute trash content since 2012 I would say. Prove me wrong.
Sounds pretty arrogant to me.
Just saw Furiosa which rocked. Saw the new Apes which is an even older franchise than Ghostbusters and was good too. First Omen was good....I'm thinking your problem is that you presumably saw a trailer for Ghostbusters and didn't immediately say to yourself, "this looks like dogshit". Most people did i wager and rightly skipped it. You gotta pick your battles.
idk I liked the Iron Claw, Love Lies Bleeding, Evil Does Not Exist, Last Stop in Yuma County, Perfect Days, Monster and most of those are all recent releases. There's always movies being made now a days, I do think that the reduced profitability of movies and increased risk has lessened quality and what risks people want to take but there's still shit being made.
a good rule of thumb is just to do some research and find a critic who's opinion you are similar too and follow their ratings really. Too many people just use scores and rotten tomatoes or something to find movies when the real point is to find just one that you are in line with so they can do the first view for you. These generalized scores aren't super usually
Well, they did the same with the Robocop franchise, and they still kept the main series targeted towards a more mature audience (sure, it's not as gory as the first Robocop was, but still).
Nothing is made for adults anymore. That’s kind of my main point. Movies traditionally made for adults, are now pandering to an audience they think will blindly spend money even if it’s trash

I don't think I have one, movies are just like a thing you put on a 2nd monitor or fall asleep to. I'ma say Band of Brothers even tho it's not a movie.
Because you don’t check the Metacritic scores and skip the crap. According to Metacritic “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is the 192nd best movie of 2024.
Of course all movies seem shitty if all you watch is franchise slop.
Movies don't suck now. There are plenty of great ones still being made. You just don't watch them.
They make them all for kids now in general because it sells more seats at the theatres. You get the adults and their multiple kids. It's simple to just keep the language clean and any wittier adult jokes just go unnoticed by the younger viewers. Throw in a couple kid-oriented scenes and they love it and tell their friends which then bug their parents to take them.
> The first Ghostbusters was definitely not made for children
Yeah but the cartoon was and that ran for years. So did Ecto cooler! So that argument is over 30 years out of date.
If this were the case, they wouldn’t have to change parts of the movie, including lines and roles, just to air in china. They also have to change the movie posters.
Pretty much. Studios just pump out soulless sequels and prequels and remakes for the most part. Wokeness has also destroyed traditional storytelling.
There are a few exceptions so just spend your money on those. I enjoyed Godzilla Minus One, Oppenheimer.
Interesting comment and will probably get down voted but yeah I'd agree the culture in the US is very infantilized and in a state of arrested development. Maybe because the real world is so screwed up people just default to mindless entertainment
>why are the sequels made for kids? They made a Ghostbusters cartoon back in the 80s. Acting like "Ghostbusters for kids" is some modern thing is wrong.
Tbf, they made a Mummy cartoon too but I wouldn’t say that movie series is for kids either. Although I totally watched it as a kid.
You make a good point too.
I watched the cartoon as well. I’m talking about the movies.
I watched the first Ghostbusters movie when I was a kid. The 80s were a different time.
I agree, which is my main point. Why are they so bad now, they were so good back then.
[удалено]
reading OP’s post and comments makes think of a Captain Insano quote: “how old are ya, kid? Eleven, twelve?”
They are lol
If you liked the new planet of the apes, I don’t respect your opinion on what a good movie is. Just saying.
What is a good movie?
Blade Runner, Alien, Schindlers List, Hurt Locker, Big, Dances With Wolves, Godfather, Green Mile, etc. many more great movies
Dune pt1&2. Oppenheimer.
Dune wasn’t very good, but it’s really hard to translate into film. I think it was more the soundtrack in dune that threw me off. The women screaming in the soundtrack was off putting.
Crazy opinion. Both are in my favorite movies ever list.
How’d you like the first one?
I understand its not everyones cup of tea because the entire movie is basically just to set up the 2nd one but I loved it.
No no, the first Dune movie.
The David Lynch one??? I appreciate him trying I guess, but its horrible. Even he thinks so lol.
Ageed
I think the newer ones also struggle to tell the story well. My opinion
That’s crazy to me. The new dune movies are in your top 10 ever?
Oppenheimer was good.
So then you admit you've been proven wrong in your statement that nothing good has come out since 2012?
I concede Oppenheimer was pretty good.
> Prove me wrong. How? Your entire argument is subjective on an elementary level. I could easily say Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was made for adults, had knee-slapping jokes, and the acting was superb. Where does that leave us? The point being, how are we defining quality movies? I do like the conversation about today’s movies though.
I agree that’s your opinion. Why is mine so troubling to you?
Its not your opinion that troubles me. Obviously its yours to have and at the end of the day people can agree to disagree and move along. I'm just not sure what kind of conversation you were hoping to initiate here and to be honest your final sentence made it less about today's state of movies and more about challenging this sub to convince you of something inconsequential. I guess Last stop in Yuma? But it was just ok
There should be an automod rule to shadowban anyone who posts using “prove me wrong.”
Also “let me explain” just get to the point already
lol I kind of agree. I’ll edit it out
>Any franchise So don't watch franchise films? The whole point of them is to have mass appeal. They aren't going to be winning awards or taking risks. No one's going to win an Oscar for their Acting in Avengers7: The Return of the McGuffin, because that's not the point of Avengers movies.
Franchise film - Godzilla Minus One. Was amazing.
Shouldn’t they want to be a good movie at least? Otherwise what’s the point?
Other people like them. And they make money more often than original movies. There have been a ton of original movies this year that no one went to see.
I agree with everything you said.
The point is to be entertained. If a movie isn't entertaining to you, then you're not under any obligation to watch it, and most places will refund your ticket if you walk out and say you weren't enjoying it. I haven't seen any of the new Ghostbusters films, because I know I'm not the target audience.
So the answer is “who cares if you don’t like it”? That’s not a good way to entertain people
What? No. The answer is that whether a movie is "good" is subjective. Some people enjoy the new Ghostbusters. That's fine. You didn't, and I know I wouldn't. That's fine too. No movie is going to appeal to everyone, and you don't need to watch movies you know you won't be entertained by.
That’s the problem, they aren’t trying to entertain the majority of movie goers anymore.
... who is "they"? I just watched I Saw the TV Glow, and it was pretty great. I'd go see it again and I was very entertained.
I haven’t seen it yet. I will check that out.
Hollywood
Ah yes, Hollywood. The Single Entity that is solely responsible for every movie. I see you're not here for serious discussion so I'll leave you to it. Have fun!
Ok Bye!
Actually that's the problem. They are TRYING to entertain EVERYONE and entertaining noone.
I haven’t seen the evidence for this.
Then you're not watching enough films.
Ok good talk.
They don’t need to be good if people are rushing out to see them anyway. That’s the franchise model.
That is what we’re seeing these days. It’s sad to me.
So yea, don’t see those and see good movies instead
I’d love to. Name some?
What kind of movies/genres do you generally enjoy? What are some of your favorites? Maybe I can recommend some.
I have over 4805 movies and 500+ tv shows, I’d love some recommendations.
Ok, and when you say “new” movies suck what time period do you have in mind? Like you want recommendations since 2000? 2010? 2020?
Anything in the last 10 years would be fine. Anything you loved. Not tolerated.
Any
The reading rainbow doc recently released was excellent.
And it’s not just franchise films. Civil War was pretty bad.
Do you think A24 movies are generally bad? Because I think most would say they're generally pretty good even if they're not universally good.
They aren’t great. The lobster was ok
What didn't you like about Civil War?
I didn’t like the focus being on the media, it was obviously trying to tell us the media were the heroes. We all know that’s not the case in real life. Oh and California and Texas were on the same side. What?? Lol
I didn't watch Civil War, because it didn't look like a movie I'd enjoy. You gotta know your own tastes.
I like movies. I usually watch most of them. That’s how you know what you like and what you don’t.
Watching most of them is how you start, then you develop *taste* based on those experiences and you have to make more conscious decisions about what to watch.
That’s the way you do it. I feel like most movies deserve a chance.
You made this thread saying you feel like most movies suck. You can't have it both ways.
New movies have sucked lately, for the most part. (last 10 years)
Sure I can. I wanted conversation and got it.
You said some bullshit and got a bunch of people to call you out on it. Great conversation you're inspiring, real thought-provoking stuff.
You are the problem. Just trying to stir shit up with nothing to actually say.
This guy 6 days ago: “when did Reddit become a forum of so many pussies?” Really compelling questions you got there, boss…
Thank you. I stand behind my statement. Asking why movies suck these days makes me a pussy? Good try.
It’s such a sweeping generalization and such a reductionist take that I can only surmise that you’re too afraid to actually do any research and see the sheer depth of filmmaking that’s currently being produced. Does being afraid make you a pussy? I don’t think so, I think there’s still time to learn and grow
https://i.imgur.com/kDt1k9t.gif
Go see good movies instead
It’s impossible when there aren’t any being made.
Movies are more than just franchise films.
Good one!
You’re wrong. If you want to learn, great. If you don’t, what are you doing here?
Good one! Very productive. You’re part of the problem.
Ghostbusters has always been a franchise for kids. Granted 80's and 90's kids that were exposed a bit racier content but still. They simply write god awful scripts/movies for these girls. Tomb raider, resident evil and everything else female lead action from back then was great. My conclusion is whomever is writing scripts for movies nowadays is a woman hating misogynist.
This definitely checks out.
The sequel to the reboot of the reboot of a 40 year old franchise isn't up to snuff? What a shock! Way to plant that flag!
Thank you.
You dont like movies. You want people to think you have strong opinions on movies because you think, wrongly, that pissing on popular films make you look interesting. Motherfucker said Paddington!! I just can’t with this guy.

The unbearable weight of massive talent was hilarious.
I don’t care how you see me, this isn’t about me, it’s about movies being trash.
I actually don’t care at all what you think. So I won’t even read the second line of your college thesis. Thanks though.
I think you did, bro.
Wish in one hand
Shouldn't you care tho? Why make the post and say "prove me wrong?" Dude listed some good franchise films there
Fine I’ll read it. They assume a lot though.
Now that i read it, no I don’t care. His list is just crazy.
Man you're a hard one to please! The apes movies and MI movies are all great and, in my opinion, even better than the originals!
Definitely better than the originals, the newest wasn’t very good though.
Haven't seen the newest ape one, but the newest MI was definitely not on par. I do think Fallout would've been a good sendoff.
Agreed
I appreciate you talking it out though!
Only because I’m old enough to remember when movies were good.
They dont; your preferences changed, you got older, or both.
Good to hear your opinion. I disagree.
Fine. That's what a message board is for.
Yes it is.
[удалено]
Arrogant? Did you take offense to someone else’s opinion about ghostbusters? That sounds like a personal issue you could work on.
[удалено]
Then how about naming some movies, my man. Instead of trying to insult someone with a different opinion?
>Anyway, it’s not just ghostbusters. Any franchise you can think of is absolute trash content since 2012 I would say. Prove me wrong. Sounds pretty arrogant to me.
So…. Any movies? No? Thanks for you meaningless input
God I hate "prove me wrong". Fury Road. Goodbye.
Horrible movies. But so were the trashy Australian ones.
Thanks for the comment. Appreciated.
you seem really grumpy :/ eat some lunch
idk I liked the Iron Claw, Love Lies Bleeding, Evil Does Not Exist, Last Stop in Yuma County, Perfect Days, Monster and most of those are all recent releases. There's always movies being made now a days, I do think that the reduced profitability of movies and increased risk has lessened quality and what risks people want to take but there's still shit being made.
This is an actual response. Thank you. Didn’t see all these, I’ll check them out. Last stop in Yuma was pretty good.
a good rule of thumb is just to do some research and find a critic who's opinion you are similar too and follow their ratings really. Too many people just use scores and rotten tomatoes or something to find movies when the real point is to find just one that you are in line with so they can do the first view for you. These generalized scores aren't super usually
I don’t care what critics say, they are usually wrong anyway

Well, they did the same with the Robocop franchise, and they still kept the main series targeted towards a more mature audience (sure, it's not as gory as the first Robocop was, but still).
That doesn’t mean the whole franchise is for kids
Ghostbusters had a PG rating.
Watch it and tell me it was for kids.
I watched it when I was 8. Fucking loved it. One of my favorite movies of all time.
Me too, which is why I asked the original question.
Seems to me like it was for kids.
It wasn’t. The second one was geared towards children after the response to the first.
It was rated for young audiences. You saw it as a kid and thoroughly enjoyed it. So I guess I'm not understanding how it wasn't for kids.
A ghost gives a blowjob in the movie. Is that for kids?
And the cartoon
Ok, I really liked ‘Underwater’ 2020.

Nothing is made for adults anymore. That’s kind of my main point. Movies traditionally made for adults, are now pandering to an audience they think will blindly spend money even if it’s trash

lol ok.
That's because people like you blindly spend money on a trash film because it have ghostbusters in the title. Be more discerning with what you watch and the problem will go away. There are plenty of films for adults out there, but a quick glance at the marketing of frozen empire would have told you that's not one of them.
Name a few. Be proactive
Yeah, money talks. Where do you spend your entertainment dollars? If you are supporting original films then I understand your frustration.
I’m supporting most movies, whether they turn out to be good or not. Sadly, these days, mostly bad.
The only people who care whether a Ghostbusters movie is for kids or not are manchildren, so it's at least half accurate.
What’s your favorite movie?
I don't think I have one, movies are just like a thing you put on a 2nd monitor or fall asleep to. I'ma say Band of Brothers even tho it's not a movie.
Good series
You're old and grumpy.
This does check out… still doesn’t explain the trash they release these days
You’re just old.
This checks out. Over 40 means actual taste. Go, enjoy Unfrosted. Trash.
Because you don’t check the Metacritic scores and skip the crap. According to Metacritic “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is the 192nd best movie of 2024.
There have been so many movies I love, that critics hated. So I don’t listen to them.
Which ones
Stargate, Idiocracy, fifth element, etc
Boondocks saints, ad astra
Of course all movies seem shitty if all you watch is franchise slop. Movies don't suck now. There are plenty of great ones still being made. You just don't watch them.
But I do, name some.
Exactly. Besides, Ghostbusters is hardly anything special beyond the original movie. Seems a weird movie to mark a whole statement off of.
Pandering. Yep.
Fury Road and Furiosa are both good, so you're wrong.
I disagree. I think they were bad movies with a weird pain fetish motifs. Just like the originals
Sounds like this is a you problem then.
Could be. I do have my own opinions.
You answered your own question: it was made for kids. Paradoxically, the best kids’ movies are made with adults in mind.
A ghostbusters film? For children, you say?
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was hilarious. There. I proved myself wrong.
> The first Ghostbusters was definitely not made for children Yeah but the cartoon was and that ran for years. So did Ecto cooler! So that argument is over 30 years out of date.

If this were the case, they wouldn’t have to change parts of the movie, including lines and roles, just to air in china. They also have to change the movie posters.
I get making sequels. I don’t get trying to shoehorn in every minor character from the series. Pick a few and move on.
Agreed.
Pretty much. Studios just pump out soulless sequels and prequels and remakes for the most part. Wokeness has also destroyed traditional storytelling. There are a few exceptions so just spend your money on those. I enjoyed Godzilla Minus One, Oppenheimer.
I did enjoy Oppenheimer. Thank you for the realistic response. I appreciate it.
It’s because people are more childlike now. Young people don’t want to grow up and be adults. So there is a bigger market for children’s movies.
This checks out.
Interesting comment and will probably get down voted but yeah I'd agree the culture in the US is very infantilized and in a state of arrested development. Maybe because the real world is so screwed up people just default to mindless entertainment
